Cross-Model Validation of Coronagraphic Exposure Time Calculators for the Habitable Worlds Observatory: A Report from the Exoplanet Science Yield sub-Working Group

Christopher C. Stark, Sarah Steiger, Armen Tokadjian et al.

Estimating the exoplanet scientific productivity of the Habitable Worlds Observatory requires estimating science exposure times. From exoplanet yields to spectral retrievals, exposure times are at the heart of our understanding of the capabilities of this future mission. As such, ensuring accuracy and consistency between different exposure time calculators (ETCs) is critical. We summarize the efforts of the Exoplanet Science Yield sub-Working Group's ETC Calibration Task Group, which conducted a calibration study from March 4 to June 30 of 2024. We compare three commonly-used coronagraphic exposure time calculators. We find that the ETCs use a broad variety of differing methods, assumptions, and inputs that produce variation in the final exposure times at the ~60% level. The causes for the disagreement have largely been identified, flagged for further development efforts, and in some cases retired since the conclusion of this effort. We expect that addressing the flagged efforts will bring the ETCs to within better than ~30% agreement.

MHier-RAG: Multi-Modal RAG for Visual-Rich Document Question-Answering via Hierarchical and Multi-Granularity Reasoning

Ziyu Gong, Chengcheng Mai, Yihua Huang

The multi-modal long-context document question-answering task aims to locate and integrate multi-modal evidences (such as texts, tables, charts, images, and layouts) distributed across multiple pages, for question understanding and answer generation. The existing methods can be categorized into Large Vision-Language Model (LVLM)-based and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)-based methods. However, the former were susceptible to hallucinations, while the latter struggled for inter-modal disconnection and cross-page fragmentation. To address these challenges, a novel multi-modal RAG model, named MHier-RAG, was proposed, leveraging both textual and visual information across long-range pages to facilitate accurate question answering for visual-rich documents. A hierarchical indexing method with the integration of flattened in-page chunks and topological cross-page chunks was designed to jointly establish in-page multi-modal associations and long-distance cross-page dependencies. By means of joint similarity evaluation and large language model (LLM)-based re-ranking, a multi-granularity semantic retrieval method, including the page-level parent page retrieval and document-level summary retrieval, was proposed to foster multi-modal evidence connection and long-distance evidence integration and reasoning. Experimental results performed on public datasets, MMLongBench-Doc and LongDocURL, demonstrated the superiority of our MHier-RAG method in understanding and answering modality-rich and multi-page documents.

Reflection of Political and Social Influences on the Ghazal Genre in Azerbaijani Literature in the 20th Century: Aliagha Vahid's Literary Works

Ziyafat Huseynova

The essay focuses on the problems that hindered the ghazal genre from developing and how the poet kept the tradition alive in Azerbaijani literature at the start of the 20th century. We used Aliagha Vahid’s literary creativity for our project since he lived through this period in Azerbaijan, experienced all of its hardships, and demonstrated the genre’s potential by creating poetic imagery of the time in his ghazals. He is an Azerbaijani poet who is revered in the Turkic community as Fuzuli’s successor and is credited with saving the ghazal genre in Azerbaijani literature. Analyzing his lyrics provided excellent possibilities to examine the influential factors on all of the Azerbaijani literature at the time. In the study, his creation of new kinds of ghazals with social and political issues while retaining the characteristics of the traditional ghazal genre was investigated. With him, the genre in Azerbaijani literature underwent a new phase. The attempt to eradicate the ghazal from the Azerbaijani literature which has a history of centuries –long history did not succeed as a result of mostly Aliagha Vahid’s serious efforts. For this purpose, the poet’s historical milieu, the challenges of the repression, his satirical ghazals with a sociopolitical theme, the thematic details of his lyrics, and other issues have been involved in the investigation.

The semiotics of provincial texts is the content core of provincial research, ensuring their cognitive growth. Comparative semiotic analysis of provincial texts is faced with the impossibility of direct correlation of the compared texts due to their various phenomenological features. The processes of localization of provincial texts and the procedures for their semiotic identification are also directly related to the concepts of geo-culture and geo-culturality. Any local text assumes the presence or absence of a trans-semiotic ‘shifter’ that connects or disables the text itself to a particular provincial register. The provinciality of the text is formed as a situational mental distancing from both the particular signs of the geo-culture of the represented territory and the signs of its immediate locality. Provincial texts create mutually generating and reproducing spatial ontologies, which can be defined as co-spatialities. The constantly reproducing processes of ‘provincialization’ of texts in the course of increasing their co-spatialities are the ontological basis and subject of trans-semiotics of provincial texts. In ontological terms, provincial texts are spaces of many newly formed divergent meta-symbolic assemblages. The aim of trans-semiotic studies of provincial texts is to study the specifics of transformations and transfigurations of newly emerging meta-symbolic provincial assemblages.

Software Engineering for Serverless Computing

Jinfeng Wen, Zhenpeng Chen, Xuanzhe Liu

Serverless computing is an emerging cloud computing paradigm that has been applied to various domains, including machine learning, scientific computing, video processing, etc. To develop serverless computing-based software applications (a.k.a., serverless applications), developers follow the new cloud-based software architecture, where they develop event-driven applications without the need for complex and error-prone server management. The great demand for developing serverless applications poses unique challenges to software developers. However, Software Engineering (SE) has not yet wholeheartedly tackled these challenges. In this paper, we outline a vision for how SE can facilitate the development of serverless applications and call for actions by the SE research community to reify this vision. Specifically, we discuss possible directions in which researchers and cloud providers can facilitate serverless computing from the SE perspective, including configuration management, data security, application migration, performance, testing and debugging, etc.

Narrative Empathy, Vulnerability and Ethics of Care in William Trevor’s Fiction

Angelo Monaco

This essay engages with the relationship between ethics and literature. To this end, it addresses the theoretical framework of narrative empathy as illustrative of the supposed ethical power of literary writing. Using a corpus of William Trevor’s fiction, Reading Turgenev (1991) and Love and Summer (2009) as case study, the essay suggests that Trevor’ use of metafictional devices (metalepses and the disnarrated), temporal disarray and multifocal perspectives tends to complicate the general assumption of empathy as necessarily easy and spontaneous. These formal strategies of literary representation manifest the underlying manipulative nature of narrative empathy, confronting readers with the ethical effects of empathy. In so doing, Trevor’s fiction edges towards the aesthetics of vulnerability in that it entails an ethics of reading and writing that reminds the reader of the darkest sides of human existence.

A Modular Magneto-Inductive Sensor for Low Vector Magnetic Field Measurements

Huan Liu, Xiaobin Wang, Changfeng Zhao et al.

The low magnetic field measurement has been utilized since ancient times in order to find economic resources, to detect magnetic anomalies, etc. In this case, the vector magnetic survey can simultaneously obtain the modulus and direction information of the magnetic field, which can contribute to obtaining more precise information and characteristics of magnetic field resources. This paper is concerned with the possibility of vector magnetic field measurement with a magneto-inductive (MI) magnetic sensor. To evaluate the capability of the MI sensor, a test platform is set up and its performance including the noise floor, the resolution, the sensitivity, etc., are comprehensively characterized. Further, a comparative geomagnetic observation and magnetic anomaly detection among the proposed MI sensor, a high-precision Overhauser sensor, and a commonly used and accepted commercial MI sensor are conducted. The experimental results identify the capability of the proposed MI sensor in weak magnetic detection.

User profiling using smartphone network traffic analysis

Ayush Bahuguna, Ashutosh Bhatia, Kamlesh Tiwari et al.

The recent decade has witnessed phenomenal growth in communication technology. Development of user-friendly software platforms, such as Facebook, WhatsApp etc. have facilitated ease of communication and thereby people have started freely sharing messages and multimedia over the Internet. Further, there is a shift in trends with services being accessed from smartphones over personal computers. To protect the security and privacy of the smartphone users, most of the applications use encryption that encapsulates communications over the Internet. However, research has shown that the statistical information present in a traffic can be used to identify the application, and further, the activity performed by the user inside that application. In this paper, we extend the scope of analysis by proposing a learning framework to leverage application and activity data to profile smartphone users in terms of their gender, profession age group etc. This will greatly help the authoritative agencies to conduct their investigations related to national security and other purposes.

Detection of Gait Abnormalities caused by Neurological Disorders

Daksh Goyal, Koteswar Rao Jerripothula, Ankush Mittal

In this paper, we leverage gait to potentially detect some of the important neurological disorders, namely Parkinson's disease, Diplegia, Hemiplegia, and Huntington's Chorea. Persons with these neurological disorders often have a very abnormal gait, which motivates us to target gait for their potential detection. Some of the abnormalities involve the circumduction of legs, forward-bending, involuntary movements, etc. To detect such abnormalities in gait, we develop gait features from the key-points of the human pose, namely shoulders, elbows, hips, knees, ankles, etc. To evaluate the effectiveness of our gait features in detecting the abnormalities related to these diseases, we build a synthetic video dataset of persons mimicking the gait of persons with such disorders, considering the difficulty in finding a sufficient number of people with these disorders. We name it \textit{NeuroSynGait} video dataset. Experiments demonstrated that our gait features were indeed successful in detecting these abnormalities.

The Sentence Is Most Important: Styles of Engagement in William T. Vollmann’s Fictions

Christopher K. Coffman

William T. Vollmann frequently asserts that his ideal reader will appreciate the functionality and beauty of his sentences. This article begins by taking such claims seriously, and draws on both literary and rhetorical stylistics to explore some of the many ways that his texts answer to his intention to find “the right sentence for the right job.” In particular, this article argues that Vollmann’s stylistic decisions are most notable when they most directly satisfy his effort to produce texts that foster empathetic knowledge, serve truth, resist abusive power, and encourage charitable action. Extended close analyses of passages from an early and from a mid-career text (The Rainbow Storiesand Europe Central) illustrate Vollmann’s consistency across two decades of his career regarding choices in the areas of figuration (including schemes and tropes of comparison, repetition, balance, naming, and amplification), grammar, deixis, allusion, and other compositional strategies. Particular attention is paid to passages that display the stylistic mechanisms underlying Vollmann’s negotiation of his texts’ moral qualities, including both the moral content of the worlds represented in the texts, and the moral responsibility the texts bear with regard to their audience. The results of my analyses demonstrate that Vollmann typically prioritizes openness, critique, and dialogue not only in terms of incident and character, but also on the scale of the phrase, clause, and sentence. Ultimately, this article shows how Vollmann’s sentences serve his declared intentions and allow readers to recognize compatibilities between Vollmann’s works and the characteristic features of post-postmodernist writing in general.

Affect in Tweets Using Experts Model

Subba Reddy Oota, Adithya Avvaru, Mounika Marreddy et al.

Estimating the intensity of emotion has gained significance as modern textual inputs in potential applications like social media, e-retail markets, psychology, advertisements etc., carry a lot of emotions, feelings, expressions along with its meaning. However, the approaches of traditional sentiment analysis primarily focuses on classifying the sentiment in general (positive or negative) or at an aspect level(very positive, low negative, etc.) and cannot exploit the intensity information. Moreover, automatically identifying emotions like anger, fear, joy, sadness, disgust etc., from text introduces challenging scenarios where single tweet may contain multiple emotions with different intensities and some emotions may even co-occur in some of the tweets. In this paper, we propose an architecture, Experts Model, inspired from the standard Mixture of Experts (MoE) model. The key idea here is each expert learns different sets of features from the feature vector which helps in better emotion detection from the tweet. We compared the results of our Experts Model with both baseline results and top five performers of SemEval-2018 Task-1, Affect in Tweets (AIT). The experimental results show that our proposed approach deals with the emotion detection problem and stands at top-5 results.

Le antologie e le grandi opere come contributi alla costruzione dei canoni

Remo Ceserani

In this paper, Remo Ceserani reflects upon the notions of canon and anthology in relation to the institutions behind them. After a short premise in which the traditional role of Church and school in the process of canonization is taken into account, the discussion moves to the present age, focusing on the idea of canon that lies at the basis of both North-American and Italian anthologies. In the former case, Ceserani highlights how the emergence of world literature has led to revise the structure of anthologies; in the latter case, the author argues that the canon mutuated from the work of Francesco De Sanctis still functions as the main source for many anthologies. He then concludes by stating that a thematical approach could constitute an alternative structuring criterion for a scholastic anthology.

Di-higgs enhancement by neutral scalar as probe of new colored sector

Koji Nakamura, Kenji Nishiwaki, Kin-ya Oda et al.

We study a class of models in which the Higgs pair production is enhanced at hadron colliders by an extra neutral scalar. The scalar particle is produced by the gluon fusion via a loop of new colored particles, and decays into di-Higgs through its mixing with the Standard Model Higgs. Such a colored particle can be the top/bottom partner, such as in the dilaton model, or a colored scalar which can be triplet, sextet, octet, etc., called leptoquark, diquark, coloron, etc., respectively. We examine the experimental constraints from the latest Large Hadron Collider (LHC) data, and discuss the future prospects of the LHC and the Future Circular Collider up to 100TeV. We also point out that the 2.4$σ$ excess in the $b\bar bγγ$ final state reported by the ATLAS experiment can be interpreted as the resonance of the neutral scalar at 300GeV.

Oleg I. Fedotov. I «sonetti sciolti» di Iosif Brodskij

Elizaveta Illarionova

This is the Italian translation of the chapter "Iosif Brodskij" of the book Sonet by Oleg Ivanovič Fedotov.

Boolean Operations using Generalized Winding Numbers

Alec Jacobson

The generalized winding number function measures insideness for arbitrary oriented triangle meshes. Exploiting this, I similarly generalize binary boolean operations to act on such meshes. The resulting operations for union, intersection, difference, etc. avoid volumetric discretization or pre-processing.
