The History of Marimba and its Evolution from Traditional to Modern Music

Gökay Bilgiç, İsmail Gürkan Metin

The marimba is a percussion instrument whose origins go back centuries and has a wide musical journey from traditional to modern. Nourished by the cultural heritage of Africa and Central America, the instrument has developed structurally and technically over time and has gained an important place in today’s music world. Used as a basic element of rhythm and melody in traditional music, the marimba has found new areas of expression in the works of classical music, jazz and contemporary composers since the 20th century. This study examines the historical origins of the marimba, its place in traditional music and how it adapted to the modern music scene. In this context, the evolution of the instrument from traditional music to modern music genres is detailed. In addition, with the increasing importance given to the marimba in contemporary music, a perspective on the future direction of the marimba is presented. In this way, the transformation process of the marimba from the past to the present has been comprehensively analyzed in order to better understand its place and importance in the world of music. At this stage, a literature review was conducted and descriptive, historical, comparative analysis and document analysis research methods were used to present the subject from a broad perspective.

The role of musical self-concept and embodiment in stress and flourishing among Chinese university music students

Xia Yu, Fumei Xu

This study explores the embodied role of musical self-concept in the relationship between academic stress and flourishing among Chinese university music students. Music students face distinctively high levels of academic stress due to intensive practice schedules, performance anxiety, and demanding technical and creative assessments, all of which engage both their physical and psychological selves. Flourishing, defined as the integration of emotional, psychological, and social wellbeing, is essential for positive psychological health. Our sample consisted of 1,767 Chinese university music students. The findings reveal that academic stress has a significant and negative impact on flourishing, consistent with the literature on the harmful effects of stress on well-being. This study further identifies that the embodied nature of musical self-concept, particularly the emotional and communicative dimensions, significantly mediates the relationship between academic stress and flourishing. In contrast, the ability and ambition component did not show a significant mediating effect. The embodied aspects of musical self-concept are evident in the ways students physically engage with their instruments, experience emotions during performance, and integrate their sense of self into their musical practice. These results highlight the importance of cultivating a positive and embodied musical self-concept to counteract the detrimental effects of academic stress and foster flourishing. Interventions aimed at enhancing embodied musical practices and self-awareness may be particularly effective in supporting students’ overall wellbeing. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the psychological and embodied dimensions that influence the wellbeing of music students, offering practical implications for educational strategies to enhance their flourishing.

Mental Fatigue and Sports Performance of Athletes: Theoretical Explanation, Influencing Factors, and Intervention Methods

Chang-Hong Wu, Yun-Di Zhao, Fu-Qiang Yin et al.

Mental fatigue is an important factor affecting athletes’ performance. Explaining the effects of mental fatigue on sports performance from a theoretical point of view can help us deeply understand the interconnection between mental fatigue and sports performance and conduct effective interventions based on this. Combining the relevant literature in China and abroad reveals that the current academic theories on the mechanism of sports fatigue include motivational control theory, underload theory, neural waste disposal hypothesis, and resource depletion theory. The effects of mental fatigue on performance are reflected in aerobic endurance, sports decision-making, tactical performance, and technical performance. Current coping strategies for mental fatigue include physiological coping strategies based on nutrition (caffeine), odor, and noninvasive neuromodulation techniques and psychological and behavioral coping strategies based on music and positive thinking.

Constantly Becoming With

Kieran Sheehan

This video article is composed of footage drawn out of Sheehan’s Educational Doctoral Thesis which included four Video-Wonderings that were presented as an Analysis chapter interwoven with written text. The thesis examined the use of Intuitive Movement as a tool for eliciting information about Professional Identities with those working in the helping professions. This article re-reads the Video-Wonderings to think further into the method of using video to intra-act with theory, research activity and researcher self as a mode of ‘becoming with’ information. This piece falls within an Educational Research paradigm building on/with the work of Posthuman arts based feminist new materialists that have used ideas around embodiment as transdisciplinary, diffractive, pedagogic, social research methods.

Berghof na operowej scenie. Strategie adaptacyjne w „Czarodziejskiej Górze” Pawła Mykietyna do libretta Małgorzaty Sikorskiej-Miszczuk

Magdalena Nowicka-Ciecierska

Stawiając na pierwszym planie problemy egzystencjalne, punktem ciężkości i osnową libretta uczyniono uczucia i stany emocjonalne bohaterów, a zupełnie odsunięto wątki polityczne i społeczne obecne u Manna.

The Role of Music in E. L. Doctorow’s City of God

Marek Gajda

E. L. Doctorow became world-famous primarily for his novel Ragtime (1975), which references a distinct style of playing the piano that had a profound impact on the development of jazz. Music also plays a principal role in a number of the author’s other works. This paper explores the role of music in one of his later novels, City of God (2000), with a focus on selected scenes in which music is represented. From the viewpoint of different modes of music in literature, namely the thematization of music, the sound layer and the musicalization of  fiction, this contribution examines the emotions elicited in the protagonists in the scenes in question, as well as the atmosphere that the music creates or accentuates. It also takes into account which musical instruments  are employed, including the symbolic meaning that one of them, the violin, carries. Furthermore, an investigation is presented as to what extent musical elements from other novels by E. L. Doctorow can be  found, and in which respects this novel is unique. In City of God, the lyrics of jazz tunes emerge throughout the  novel, thus the importance of this motif is discussed in detail along with the attention devoted to other major manifestations of music in this literary work.

Aspectos técnicos, estéticos e composicionais em Graphein de Raphael Cendo

Sergio Kafejian, Sivio Ferraz

The Effect of Music on Livestock: Cattle, Poultry and Pigs

Patrycja Ciborowska, Monika Michalczuk, Damian Bień

The welfare of animals, especially those kept in intensive production systems, is a priority for modern agriculture. This stems from the desire to keep animals healthy, to obtain a good-quality final product, and to meet the demands of today’s consumers, who have been increasingly persuaded to buy organic products. As a result, new sound-based methods have been pursued to reduce external stress in livestock. Music therapy has been known for thousands of years, and sounds were believed to improve both body and spirit. Today, they are mostly used to distract patients from their pain, as well as to treat depression and cardiovascular disorders. However, recent studies have suggested that appropriately selected music can confer some health benefits, e.g., by increasing the level and activity of natural killer cells. For use in livestock, the choice of genre, the loudness of the music and the tempo are all important factors. Some music tracks promote relaxation (thus improving yields), while others have the opposite effect. However, there is no doubt that enriching the animals’ environment with music improves their welfare and may also convince consumers to buy products from intensively farmed animals. The present paper explores the effects of music on livestock (cattle, poultry and pigs) on the basis of the available literature.

Formats and genres of media communication of the executive power

Shirinkina , Mariya Andreevna

The article presents a general description of the system of the executive power media resources from the point of view of its genre organization. The author offers a literature review on computer-mediated communication and the sphere of public relations and gives a definition of a genre in connection with the Internet. It is argued that an important characteristic of a media genre is its format regarded as a sum total of discourse and media aspects determined by the technical capacity of various Internet services. On the basis of executive power official websites, their press service publics and accounts of individual officials in social networks and microblogging services (VK, Instagram, Twitter), as well as messenger channels (Telegram) the author singles out genre varieties of media messages. The author argues that the executive power media communications form an integrated system of communication means and methods of communicating with the society through various Internet services and platforms. The complex of multi-code media messages constitutes a scenario of communication with all possible target groups of the state with a view to create in the collective consciousness a positive image of the executive branch in general and that of the individual officials in particular. The author comes to the conclusion that, when a communication product is posted on the Web, its principal genre features (volume, theme, composition, stylistic peculiarities) remain recognizable, and only the form of presenting the information offered to the addressee with the help of different semiotic systems varies: text, video, photo, animation, music, graphics and infographics as its particular mode, etc. The research of categorical and textual approach to media genres, which allows to describe their typological characteristics in detail may be regarded as a promising continuation of this study.

A Theory for Parsimonious Voice-Leading Classes

Carlos de Lemos Almada

This article introduces a theoretical-analytical model intended to address voice leading in popular music, considering specifically harmonic progressions characterized by dense chordal formations and smooth voicing connections, which is perfectly epitomized in Antonio Carlos Jobim's compositions. New concepts, typologies, preference rules, graphic representations, specific terminology/symbology, as well as an integrated analytical model provide the necessary foundation for the elaboration of a system of classes of parsimonious voice leading (PVL), which form the very core of the proposal. Some analytical application is provided in the last section of the article with the exam of five excerpts of Jobim’s compositions.

Diachronně synchronní kontinuum-diskontinuum jako východisko, metoda i cíl : Fukačovy hudební historiografie aneb definice není nikdy definitivní

Stanislav Bohadlo

Jiří Fukač, representing the new Czech musicological generation as the young researcher (1959), lexicographer, reviewer (1961) and especially as the author of the textbook On studying musicology (1964, O studiu hudební vědy), refused Q. Adler's narrow separation of systematic and historic musicology. He systematically paved the way for "historizing" the traditional and modern musicology disciplines. His concept of music historiography was applied on sociology and aesthetics, on aspects of semiotics, terminology, thinking, stratification, hearing, reception, communication and education. So as he adopted the basic Josef Pekař's historiographical factors (1928, geographic location, neighboring cultures, the history of its own, a coincidence), so by his categories of paradigma, syntagma, diachronic synchronous continuum-discontinum and white spots left behind valuable methodology not only for music but also for the history of art disciplines and, naturally, even for the general history.
