From Local to Global: A Push–Pull–Mooring Perspective on Chinese Consumer Switching-to-Purchase in Cross-Border E-Commerce

Jung-Chieh Lee, Yinlian Zheng, Lei Bi

Cross-border e-commerce (CBEC) is reshaping how consumers engage with global markets. While most prior studies focus on CBEC purchase or repurchase intentions, little is known about the factors that drive consumers to switch from domestic e-commerce platforms to CBEC platforms. To address this gap, this study employs the push–pull–mooring (PPM) framework to investigate the factors underlying consumers’ switching intention toward CBEC. A mixed-methods approach was used. First, qualitative interviews helped identify relevant constructs. Subsequently, a quantitative survey that received 727 valid responses was used to empirically test the proposed model. A partial least squares (PLS) analysis was conducted, and the results revealed that push factors (perceived high domestic prices), pull factors (product uniqueness, pricing competitiveness, CBEC platform reputation, the general country image of the CBEC platform, and consumer informedness), and mooring factors (perceived behavioral control and variety seeking) significantly drive consumers’ intentions to switch to CBEC platforms. Furthermore, mooring factors moderately influence the relationship between push factors and switching intentions and the relationship between pull factors and switching intentions. This research deepens our understanding of the factors influencing consumers’ switching intentions toward CBEC platforms. Additionally, the findings of this research offer practical guidance that can help CBEC managers and practitioners develop strategies that effectively attract and retain more consumers.

How (not) to spread Communist propaganda behind the Iron Curtain: exhibitions of Polish folk art in Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam in the late 1940s

Michał Wenderski

This paper explores the 1948–1949 exhibitions showcasing Polish folk art, initially held in Poland and then sent westwards: to Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam. They were organised by Polish Communist authorities under the ‘Recovered Territories’ campaign that aimed to assert Poland’s historical and ethnographic ties to its new territories that before World War II had belonged to Germany. This propagandist effort sought to reinforce the post-war European status quo, with the exhibitions in question serving as an important element of the campaign. This case study constitutes therefore one of the earliest manifestations of the East-West Cultural Cold War. Analysing exhibition catalogues, press reviews, and archival documents, this study investigates the extent to which the propagandist objectives were achieved in the West. Additionally, it examines how French, Belgian, and Dutch representatives of the field of culture responded to Communist propaganda and mitigated its effects.

Are primary schools ready for immersive virtual reality? Resistance among stakeholders

Sarah Schnyder, Josua Dubach, Lucas Dall’Olio et al.

Abstract Immersive virtual reality (IVR), as presented through headsets, is becoming increasingly relevant in education, especially in STEM fields, due to its potential to make complex concepts more accessible. Despite empirical evidence revealing the potential of IVR, its adoption in primary schools remains low. The objective of this paper is to examine the level of acceptance and intention to use IVR among different stakeholders in Swiss primary schools. To achieve this, we conducted online questionnaires with directors (n = 37), teachers (n = 70), and parents/caregivers (n = 202). The results indicated considerable variability in the responses, with a general resistance to integrating IVR being detected across all groups. Common reasons for this resistance included high costs, technical challenges, and uncertainty about IVR’s pedagogical value. However, we found that individuals who saw value in IVR were more likely to express the intention to integrate it into their schools. We discuss the importance of bridging the gap between IVR research and the reality of school implementation through targeted projects to encourage its integration into primary education.

Derek Jarman’s <i>Tempest</i>, William Shakespeare’s <i>Salò</i>

Tomas Elliott

This article re-evaluates Derek Jarman’s adaptation of William Shakespeare’s <i>The Tempest</i> (1979) based on archival research into the cinematic and historical intertexts that influenced the film. Specifically, it focuses on the impact of Pier Paolo Pasolini on Jarman’s aesthetics, particularly the Italian filmmaker’s last work: <i>Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom</i> (1975). The article explores how Jarman used Pasolini’s work as a filter through which to frame his adaptation of Shakespeare’s play. In so doing, he produced a decidedly Pasolinian twist on <i>The Tempest</i>, which he explicitly referred to in his notes as “Shakespeare’s <i>Salò</i>.” Bridging the gap between the Renaissance and Jarman’s contemporary moment, Jarman’s film offers a meditation on ideas of captivity and captivation in <i>The Tempest</i>, which extends from the play and film’s literal representations of imprisonment to their exploration of the affective power of performance and spectacle.

La importancia ministerial en Paraguay: una evaluación cualitativa del gabinete de Mario Abdo Benítez

Sarah Patricia Cerna Villagra

Mixing of a generic simple symmetric random walk on the circle

Klaudiusz Czudek

Fix an irrational number $α$ and a real function $\mathfrak{p}$ on the circle with $0<\mathfrak{p}<1$. If a particle is placed at a point $x\in \mathbb R/\mathbb Z$, then in the next step it jumps to $x+α$ with probability $\mathfrak{p}(x)$ and to $x-α$ with probability $1-\mathfrak{p}(x)$. Sinai and Kaloshin proved that if $\mathfrak{p}$ is smooth then the random walk is uniquely ergodic and mixing, unless $α$ is Liouville and $\mathfrak{p}$ is symmetric. Unique ergodicity in the general case has been obtained by Conze and Guivarc'h. Here we give an alternative proof of the latter as well as some generic result about mixing, which partially solves a recent open problem.

Work statistics and generalized Loschmidt echo for the Hatano-Nelson model

Balázs Dóra, Cătălin Paşcu Moca

We focus on the biorthogonal work statistics of the interacting many-body Hatano-Nelson model after switching on the imaginary vector potential. We introduce a generalized Loschmidt echo $G(t)$ utilizing the biorthogonal metric operator. It is well suited for numerical analysis and its Fourier transform yields the probability distribution of work done. The statistics of work displays several universal features, including an exponential decay with the square of both the system size and imaginary vector potential for the probability to stay in the ground state. Additionally, its high energy tail follows a universal power law with exponent $-3$. This originates from the peculiar temporal power law decay of $G(t)$ with a time dependent exponent. The mean and the variance of work scale linearly and logarithmically with system size while all higher cumulants are non-extensive. Our results are relevant for non-unitary field theories as well.

The ‘15-Minute City’ concept can shape a net-zero urban future

Zaheer Allam, Simon Elias Bibri, Didier Chabaud et al.

Numerous urban models are emerging in response to climate urgencies, as pointed out in COP26, resulting in a call for urgent and deep decarbonization policies. One emerging model, responsive to the need for more sustainable urban outcomes, is that of the ‘15-Minute City’. The quest for more sustainable and smarter cities is urgent, as cities contribute more than 60% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and thus demands a redefinition of some contemporary urban policies, especially around mobility. The ‘15-Minute City’ is an emerging concept, currently in application in major European Cities, such as Paris and Barcelona, and quickly gaining popularity as a potent solution for encouraging urban sustainability transitions. As the model approaches urban planning via humane socio-economic dimensions, it can be further developed to benefit urban communities, globally in an equitable fashion. In doing so, the model can be crafted to respond to the challenges of the other geographies, including those of the Global South, specifically relating to urban infrastructural financing. This approach recognizes the need for models that can contribute to deep decarbonization agendas, while being contextually responsive with sound financial mechanisms—including both Public and Private parties. In this paper, we argue that the ’15-Minute City’ concept can be poised as a potent solution to re-structure cities for increased sustainability, inclusivity, and economic equity, through locally implemented fiscal mechanisms.

Why is constrained neural language generation particularly challenging?

Cristina Garbacea, Qiaozhu Mei

Recent advances in deep neural language models combined with the capacity of large scale datasets have accelerated the development of natural language generation systems that produce fluent and coherent texts (to various degrees of success) in a multitude of tasks and application contexts. However, controlling the output of these models for desired user and task needs is still an open challenge. This is crucial not only to customizing the content and style of the generated language, but also to their safe and reliable deployment in the real world. We present an extensive survey on the emerging topic of constrained neural language generation in which we formally define and categorize the problems of natural language generation by distinguishing between conditions and constraints (the latter being testable conditions on the output text instead of the input), present constrained text generation tasks, and review existing methods and evaluation metrics for constrained text generation. Our aim is to highlight recent progress and trends in this emerging field, informing on the most promising directions and limitations towards advancing the state-of-the-art of constrained neural language generation research.

Better Incentives for Proof-of-Work

Jakub Sliwinski, Roger Wattenhofer

This work proposes a novel proof-of-work blockchain incentive scheme such that, barring exogenous motivations, following the protocol is guaranteed to be the optimal strategy for miners. Our blockchain takes the form of a directed acyclic graph, resulting in improvements with respect to throughput and speed. More importantly, for our blockchain to function, it is not expected that the miners conform to some presupposed protocol in the interest of the system's operability. Instead, our system works if miners act selfishly, trying to get the maximum possible rewards, with no consideration for the overall health of the blockchain.

Edgeworth expansion for the coefficients of random walks on the general linear group

Hui Xiao, Ion Grama, Quansheng Liu

Let $(g_n)_{n\geq 1}$ be a sequence of independent and identically distributed random elements with law $μ$ on the general linear group $\textup{GL}(V)$, where $V=\mathbb R^d$. Consider the random walk $G_n : = g_n \ldots g_1$, $n \geq 1$. Under suitable conditions on $μ$, we establish the first-order Edgeworth expansion for the coefficients $\langle f, G_n v \rangle$ with $v \in V$ and $f \in V^*$, in which a new additional term appears compared to the case of vector norm $\|G_n v\|$.

When Does Re-initialization Work?

Sheheryar Zaidi, Tudor Berariu, Hyunjik Kim et al.

Re-initializing a neural network during training has been observed to improve generalization in recent works. Yet it is neither widely adopted in deep learning practice nor is it often used in state-of-the-art training protocols. This raises the question of when re-initialization works, and whether it should be used together with regularization techniques such as data augmentation, weight decay and learning rate schedules. In this work, we conduct an extensive empirical comparison of standard training with a selection of re-initialization methods to answer this question, training over 15,000 models on a variety of image classification benchmarks. We first establish that such methods are consistently beneficial for generalization in the absence of any other regularization. However, when deployed alongside other carefully tuned regularization techniques, re-initialization methods offer little to no added benefit for generalization, although optimal generalization performance becomes less sensitive to the choice of learning rate and weight decay hyperparameters. To investigate the impact of re-initialization methods on noisy data, we also consider learning under label noise. Surprisingly, in this case, re-initialization significantly improves upon standard training, even in the presence of other carefully tuned regularization techniques.

THE FUNDAMENTALS OF WORD-COMPOUND AND COMPOSITE NOMINATION

O. Ryabko

The article focuses on the study of the mechanisms that create nomination of wordcombinations and nomination of composites on the material of compound structured formations in flora namings. This study is relevant, because in theoretical works external (accent-graphical, distributive - va-lent, structural-morphological) properties of nominative flora wordcombinations and nominative flora composites have been considered. External onomasiological presentation of lora surroundings have been thoroughly studied. But there is internal presentation of nomination which is explained by the aspects of logic-semantic codimension and semantic volume of a defining component and a defined component in compound structured formation. Components' content of such a formation is represented in terms of logical binary oppositions of hyponyms and hyperonyms. Direct volume nomination of wordcombinations is archieved by codimension of nominative properties of their components without deinition information. On the contrary, composite nomination of plants' objects of the world is both non-direct and indirect in endocentric composites. Nominative codimension of components in en-docentric composites is achieved not only by the volume of their codimension, but also by the relevant information of the initial elements in the deinition. The irst modiied components, as a rule, are explicited by the phenomena of case semantics (non-direct nomination) and by metaphors (indirect nomination). Composite nomination in exocentric composites of lora namings is wholly indirect from nominative viewpoint. Cod-imension of implicitly expressed modiied component and basic component is achieved exclusively by the extensive relevant information of vocabulary deinition.

Assessment of Malaria Intermittent Preventive Treatment (Ipt) Uptake among Pregnant Women attending Antenatal Care at Kasanje Health Center III, Wakiso District

Doreen Kabatongole, Moses Ochan

Background: Malaria in pregnancy is a major public health problem with substantial risks for both the mother and unborn child. Malaria is responsible for 10,000 maternal deaths globally, 20% of stillbirths, and 11% of newborn deaths in sub-Saharan Africa. The study intends to explore the extent of intermittent preventive treatment IPTp uptake among pregnant women attending ANC. Methodology A Cross-sectional survey was carried out among pregnant women attending antenatal care at Kasanje Health Center III to explore the extent of intermittent preventive treatment (IPTp) uptake among pregnant women attending ANC. Data on their socio-demographic characteristics and antenatal service utilization were collected using a questionnaire and review of antenatal care (ANC) cards. In-depth interviews were conducted and data on ANC service delivery collected and analyzed. Univariate, Bivariate and multiple logistic regression analyses were done to determine factors associated with uptake of IPTp. Results: A total of 75 pregnant women were interviewed, all in reproductive age 15-48 years, with an average age of 25.6years. All the respondents (100%) had attended antenatal care at least once. 58% of the participants wherein their third trimester. Many, 31% were on their second visit, 24% on their 3rd visit while only 10% were on their first visit. The majority of the participants (88%) had their ANC started in the first trimester. It was also noted that the number of IPTp varied significantly with the number of ANC visits (chi2=33.8, p<0.001). The majority (62.67) of the participants knew IPTp and the majority of the respondents (99%) knew how malaria is transmitted. Abortion was mentioned as the major outcome of malaria in pregnancy (95%) followed by Stillbirths (72%). Conclusion and recommendations: An increased number of ANC visits, providing IPTp information to pregnant women, and the gestational age of pregnancy resulted in increased uptake of IPTp.

Research and Application of a Clear Diamond-Shaped Distribution Network Structure

Liu Shengli, Wu Jun, Xue Longjiang et al.

Aiming at the problems of low power supply reliability, poor transfer capacity between stations, and low line utilization in the current distribution network, this paper proposes a diamond-shaped distribution network structure with a clear structure. First, we investigated the typical wiring patterns of medium-voltage distribution networks in Tokyo, Japan, Paris, France, and China’s developed cities, and summarized experience and shortcomings. Secondly, combining the typical wiring patterns of distribution networks in China and abroad, construct a diamond-shaped distribution network structure, and study its adaptability, safety and flexibility, power supply reliability, and economy. Finally, take the transformation of the wiring mode of a regional distribution network in a certain city as an example, compare the use of the diamond-shaped distribution network structure in this article with the use of cable double-ring network wiring, cable “double petal” wiring, and Shanghai diamond-type wiring distribution network grid reconstruction The effect verifies the superiority of the diamond-shaped distribution network structure in this paper.
