Reduced-order modeling and classification of hydrodynamic pattern formation in gravure printing

Pauline Rothmann-Brumm, Steven L. Brunton, Isabel Scherl

Hydrodynamic pattern formation phenomena in printing and coating processes are still not fully understood. However, fundamental understanding is essential to achieve high-quality printed products and to tune printed patterns according to the needs of a specific application like printed electronics, graphical printing, or biomedical printing. The aim of the paper is to develop an automated pattern classification algorithm based on methods from supervised machine learning and reduced-order modeling. We use the HYPA-p dataset, a large image dataset of gravure-printed images, which shows various types of hydrodynamic pattern formation phenomena. It enables the correlation of printing process parameters and resulting printed patterns for the first time. 26880 images of the HYPA-p dataset have been labeled by a human observer as dot patterns, mixed patterns, or finger patterns; 864000 images (97%) are unlabeled. A singular value decomposition (SVD) is used to find the modes of the labeled images and to reduce the dimensionality of the full dataset by truncation and projection. Selected machine learning classification techniques are trained on the reduced-order data. We investigate the effect of several factors, including classifier choice, whether or not fast Fourier transform (FFT) is used to preprocess the labeled images, data balancing, and data normalization. The best performing model is a k-nearest neighbor (kNN) classifier trained on unbalanced, FFT-transformed data with a test error of 3%, which outperforms a human observer by 7%. Data balancing slightly increases the test error of the kNN-model to 5%, but also increases the recall of the mixed class from 90% to 94%. Finally, we demonstrate how the trained models can be used to predict the pattern class of unlabeled images and how the predictions can be correlated to the printing process parameters, in the form of regime maps.

Social Media Journeys -- Mapping Platform Migration

Artur Solomonik, Hendrik Heuer

As people engage with the social media landscape, popular platforms rise and fall. As current research uncovers the experiences people have on various platforms, rarely do we engage with the sociotechnical migration processes when joining and leaving them. In this paper, we asked 32 visitors of a science communication festival to draw out artifacts that we call Social Media Journey Maps about the social media platforms they frequented, and why. By combining qualitative content analysis with a graph representation of Social Media Journeys, we present how social media migration processes are motivated by the interplay of environmental and platform factors. We find that peer-driven popularity, the timing of feature adoption, and personal perceptions of migration causes - such as security - shape individuals' reasoning for migrating between social media platforms. With this work, we aim to pave the way for future social media platforms that foster meaningful and enriching online experiences for users.

Poxel: Voxel Reconstruction for 3D Printing

Ruixiang Cao, Satoshi Yagi, Satoshi Yamamori et al.

Recent advancements in 3D reconstruction, especially through neural rendering approaches like Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) and Plenoxel, have led to high-quality 3D visualizations. However, these methods are optimized for digital environments and employ view-dependent color models (RGB) and 2D splatting techniques, which do not translate well to physical 3D printing. This paper introduces "Poxel", which stands for Printable-Voxel, a voxel-based 3D reconstruction framework optimized for photopolymer jetting 3D printing, which allows for high-resolution, full-color 3D models using a CMYKWCl color model. Our framework directly outputs printable voxel grids by removing view-dependency and converting the digital RGB color space to a physical CMYKWCl color space suitable for multi-material jetting. The proposed system achieves better fidelity and quality in printed models, aligning with the requirements of physical 3D objects.

Generative AI as Digital Media

Gilad Abiri

Generative AI is frequently portrayed as revolutionary or even apocalyptic, prompting calls for novel regulatory approaches. This essay argues that such views are misguided. Instead, generative AI should be understood as an evolutionary step in the broader algorithmic media landscape, alongside search engines and social media. Like these platforms, generative AI centralizes information control, relies on complex algorithms to shape content, and extensively uses user data, thus perpetuating common problems: unchecked corporate power, echo chambers, and weakened traditional gatekeepers. Regulation should therefore share a consistent objective: ensuring media institutions remain trustworthy. Without trust, public discourse risks fragmenting into isolated communities dominated by comforting, tribal beliefs -- a threat intensified by generative AI's capacity to bypass gatekeepers and personalize truth. Current governance frameworks, such as the EU's AI Act and the US Executive Order 14110, emphasize reactive risk mitigation, addressing measurable threats like national security, public health, and algorithmic bias. While effective for novel technological risks, this reactive approach fails to adequately address broader issues of trust and legitimacy inherent to digital media. Proactive regulation fostering transparency, accountability, and public confidence is essential. Viewing generative AI exclusively as revolutionary risks repeating past regulatory failures that left social media and search engines insufficiently regulated. Instead, regulation must proactively shape an algorithmic media environment serving the public good, supporting quality information and robust civic discourse.

Recruitment of mid‐life adults to a randomized clinical trial: The multicultural healthy diet study to reduce cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease risk

Mindy J. Katz, Tanya S. Johns, Monique M. Martin et al.

Abstract INTRODUCTION Poor representation of racial/ethnic minority groups limits the validity and generalizability of clinical trials and contributes to inequities in medicine and science. OBJECTIVES To recruit a multicultural sample of mid‐life individuals using multiple recruitment modalities for a randomized controlled trial of diet and cognition comparing an anti‐inflammatory dietary intervention versus usual diet and the effect on cognition. METHODS This study describes the utility of various modalities to recruit a multi‐cultural cohort. Recruitment techniques, the success rate of each, and characteristics of participants are compared to representative Bronx U.S. Census statistics. Participants were identified in target communities using voter registration rolls paired with marketing lists and enriched patient lists extracted from electronic health records of mid‐life (40–65 years) adults in Bronx, New York. Outreach activities, including print and social media, supplemented these lists to promote the study. RESULTS Over 4 years of recruitment, invitation letters, followed by telephone calls, yielded the highest number of randomized recruits, with 80.5% of participants recruited prior to the pandemic and 90.1% during the pandemic. A total of 290 participants enrolled in proportion to the racial/ethnic breakdown of targeted Bronx communities. However, women were overrepresented compared to the overall Bronx population. Each recruitment modality had strengths and weaknesses. The combination resulted in reaching an important sector of the population that could benefit from interventions. Voter registration lists reached a broad spectrum of targeted communities and resulted in enrollment and randomization of the majority of participants. Online registries (e.g., ResearchMatch) and outreach activities yielded efficient enrollment. DISCUSSION Our multi‐pronged strategy led to successful enrollment of a multi‐cultural sample. Although the systematic list approach was the most productive, the importance of reaching out to community was crucial. Refining techniques of online registries, working with trusted community organizations, continuous assessment, and experimentation with other modalities may be helpful. Highlights ADRD affects US minority populations disproportionately. Multiple recruitment methods help engage the underrepresented in clinical trials. Use of voter registration and EHR lists allow recruiters to reach a wide and heterogenous audience. Letters followed by personal phone calls are effective in recruitment. Outreach to the community provides a person‐to‐person connection to the study

3DA: Assessing 3D-Printed Electrodes for Measuring Electrodermal Activity

Martin Schmitz, Dominik Schön, Henning Klagemann et al.

Electrodermal activity (EDA) reflects changes in skin conductance, which are closely tied to human psychophysiological states. For example, EDA sensors can assess stress, cognitive workload, arousal, or other measures tied to the sympathetic nervous system for interactive human-centered applications. Yet, current limitations involve the complex attachment and proper skin contact with EDA sensors. This paper explores the concept of 3D printing electrodes for EDA measurements, integrating sensors into arbitrary 3D-printed objects, alleviating the need for complex assembly and attachment. We examine the adaptation of conventional EDA circuits for 3D-printed electrodes, assessing different electrode shapes and their impact on the sensing accuracy. A user study (N=6) revealed that 3D-printed electrodes can measure EDA with similar accuracy, suggesting larger contact areas for improved precision. We derive design implications to facilitate the integration of EDA sensors into 3D-printed devices to foster diverse integration into everyday objects for prototyping physiological interfaces.

News Media as Suppliers of Narratives (and Information)

Kfir Eliaz, Ran Spiegler

We present a model of news media that shape consumer beliefs by providing information (signals about an exogenous state) and narratives (models of what determines outcomes). To amplify consumers' engagement, media maximize consumers' anticipatory utility. Focusing on a class of separable consumer preferences, we show that a monopolistic media platform facing homogenous consumers provides a false "empowering" narrative coupled with an optimistically biased signal. Consumer heterogeneity gives rise to a novel menu-design problem due to a "data externality" among consumers. The optimal menu features multiple narratives and creates polarized beliefs. These effects also arise in a competitive media market model.

Science Fiction, Global Warming and Environmental Education in the Capitalocene

Noel Gough

This essay explores ways in which environmental educators might break with their existing traditions of research and pedagogy by critically appraising climate histories and anticipated futures depicted by SF (science/speculative fiction) in print and audio-visual media. SF has engaged the politics of climate change for at least two centuries and, as a form of public pedagogy accessible to all generations, provides alternative visualisations of the problems arising from humanity’s destructive transformations of Earth’s climate and possible ways of ameliorating them.

Support Generation for Robot-Assisted 3D Printing with Curved Layers

Tianyu Zhang, Yuming Huang, Piotr Kukulski et al.

Robot-assisted 3D printing has drawn a lot of attention by its capability to fabricate curved layers that are optimized according to different objectives. However, the support generation algorithm based on a fixed printing direction for planar layers cannot be directly applied for curved layers as the orientation of material accumulation is dynamically varied. In this paper, we propose a skeleton-based support generation method for robot-assisted 3D printing with curved layers. The support is represented as an implicit solid so that the problems of numerical robustness can be effectively avoided. The effectiveness of our algorithm is verified on a dual-material printing platform that consists of a robotic arm and a newly designed dual-material extruder. Experiments have been successfully conducted on our system to fabricate a variety of freeform models.

The Relationship between Social Networking Site Use and the Internalization of a Thin Ideal in Females: A Meta-Analytic Review

J. Mingoia, A. Hutchinson, Carlene J Wilson et al.

Previous research has indicated that exposure to traditional media (i.e., television, film, and print) predicts the likelihood of internalization of a thin ideal; however, the relationship between exposure to internet-based social media on internalization of this ideal remains less understood. Social media differ from traditional forms of media by allowing users to create and upload their own content that is then subject to feedback from other users. This meta-analysis examined the association linking the use of social networking sites (SNSs) and the internalization of a thin ideal in females. Systematic searches were performed in the databases: PsychINFO, PubMed, Web of Science, Communication and Mass Media Complete, and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global. Six studies were included in the meta-analysis that yielded 10 independent effect sizes and a total of 1,829 female participants ranging in age from 10 to 46 years. We found a positive association between extent of use of SNSs and extent of internalization of a thin ideal with a small to moderate effect size (r = 0.18). The positive effect indicated that more use of SNSs was associated with significantly higher internalization of a thin ideal. A comparison was also made between study outcomes measuring broad use of SNSs and outcomes measuring SNS use solely as a function of specific appearance-related features (e.g., posting or viewing photographs). The use of appearance-related features had a stronger relationship with the internalization of a thin ideal than broad use of SNSs. The finding suggests that the ability to interact with appearance-related features online and be an active participant in media creation is associated with body image disturbance. Future research should aim to explore the way SNS users interact with the media posted online and the relationship linking the use of specific appearance features and body image disturbance.

International Cross-Listing and Visibility

H. Baker, John R. Nofsinger, D. Weaver

This study shows that international firms listing their shares on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) or the London Stock Exchange (LSE) experience a significant increase in visibility, as proxied by analyst coverage and print media attention (The Wall Street Journal or Financial Times). The increase in analyst following is also associated with a decrease in the cost of equity capital after the listing event in a way consistent with Merton's (1987) investor recognition hypothesis. Our results are stronger for NYSE listing firms than for LSE listing firms. This may partially compensate firms for the higher costs associated with NYSE listing (compared to LSE listing).

In the midst of great kings: the monumentalization of text in the Iron Age Levant

Timothy Hogue

The Bar-Rakib Palace Inscriptions from Zincirli have received relatively little attention from philologists and archaeologists alike because of their predictable and derivative content. However, these monuments provide an unparalleled insight into the monumentalization of text in the Iron Age Levant. As might be expected, Bar-Rakib's Aramaic inscriptions and reliefs repeat themes and tropes from other monuments. They also were strategically deployed at the site so as to interact with nearby monuments left by earlier rulers. What has received less attention is the fact that Bar-Rakib's monuments also shared many artistic tropes with small finds from Zincirli, including letters, incantation plaques, seals, and amulets. These correspondences suggest that monumental texts functioned by appropriating aspects of personal artifacts to be used on a communal scale. By projecting not only prestige but also intimacy, Bar-Rakib's inscriptions invited their audience to interact with them in imaginative ways. As the audience related to the monumental texts through acts of reading, viewing, and ritual, they would in turn reconfigure their own relationships to other communicative media, places, each other, and the polity as a whole. It was this ability to relate to communities and thus reshape them that made a text monumental in the Iron Age Levant. This was accomplished through the strategic juxtaposition of text with visual and performative media in particular spatial contexts.

Framing Depression

Annemarie Wiedicke, Doreen Reifegerste, Linn Julia Temmann et al.

Responsibility framing research on health issues typically investigates the attribution of responsibility for causes and treatment options to either the individual or society. However, social epidemiological perspectives also stress the relevance of an individual’s social network and underline that the three levels of responsibility (individual, social network, and society) interact. Given that media portrayals can affect public perceptions, attitudes, responsibility attributions, and emotions, we examined causal and treatment responsibility attributions on these three levels in the media coverage of depression. Our quantitative content analysis of major German print and online news media from 2011 to 2020 (N = 755) shows that responsibility is not only assigned to the individual and societal level, but both to the social network and to interactions between the three levels. Our findings additionally stress that key events may influence the portrayal of responsibility in media coverage, but resulting changes are only short-term.

On the problem of framing the tragic event in the zone of military-political tension in the reportage discourse of ideologically alternative media

Igor A. Kudryashov, Alexandra Yu. Chernysheva

The research – based on the material of the Russian and American daily print publications – systematically analyzed alternative forms of coverage of the incident with the MH17 airliner that crashed near Donetsk on July 17, 2014. It is revealed that in the publications under consideration, when reporting a tragic event, the same frames with conflicting conceptual content are activated. The basis of the conflict is the ideological stereotypes that the publications adhere to. The qualitative analysis has shown that in the media with different ideological attitudes, during the reconstruction of the tragedy, the frames of opponents are used in order to refute their implicit conceptual content. As a result, the Russian and American media cover the tragic eventfulness in a contrasting way. The same frames used by the alternative media reproduce the dramatic event with the Boeing MH17 in a mirror way: each of the publications blames the ideological antagonist for the incident. The watershed line between the concepts of reportage framing and propaganda is blurred. As a result, taking into account the geopolitical factor, it is possible to determine similar and differentiating features between the strategic narratives of the Russian and American media. The relevance of the research is seen in the need to determine the content of the frames identified in a discursive work about tragic events and their impact potential on the target audience. This relevance is based on the distinction between the basic and additional content of mass media frames in terms of the expression of alternative opinions on the issues under discussion. It contributes to the clarifying such concepts as «impartial coverage of current events», «language specifics of analytical discourse in the post-truth era», «deliberate restriction of the amount of information and the choice of sources for recreating the event canvas». The discussion between the Russian and American media regarding the MH17 tragedy reflects the reportage management of journalists who occupy contrasting ideological positions, and captures the logic of shaping the political agenda in a globalizing and at the same time disunited world.
