You’re Being Kinda Pushy: Exploring How News Outlets Frame Push Notifications as Credible Clickbait to Engage with Their Audiences

Carl Knauf, Hunter Reeves, Brock Mays

Push notifications are a digital strategy for outlets to provide news and a convenient way for audiences to absorb information. Past research shows the effectiveness of push notifications and how they are framed, but few studies have explored their relationship with clickbait. However, clickbait often has a negative connotation. Through an exploratory mixed methods study involving textual analysis of push notifications (<i>n</i> = 639) sent by three credible mainstream media outlets, namely <i>The Associated Press</i>, <i>The New York Times</i>, and <i>The Wall Street Journal</i>, and a survey of readers’ (<i>n</i> = 368) perception of push notifications and clickbait, this research explores how credible news outlets directly engage with their respective audiences by framing push notifications in the form of clickbait. This study builds on framing theory by proposing the concept of credible clickbait and illustrating how push notifications shape readers’ immediate perceptions of content being shared with them by news outlets they subscribe to. This research also aims to be a resource for journalists to increase audience interaction and foster sustained attention with stories.

APC waivers and Ukraine's publishing output in Gold OA journals: Evidence from five commercial publishers

Serhii Nazarovets

This study examines the effect of article processing charge (APC) waivers on the participation of Ukrainian researchers in fully Gold Open Access (Gold OA) journals published by the five largest academic publishers - Elsevier, SAGE, Springer Nature, Taylor & Francis, and Wiley - during the period 2019-2024. These publishers were selected because, in response to the full-scale war launched against Ukraine in 2022, all five introduced emergency 100% APC-waiver policies for Ukrainian authors. Using bibliometric data from the Web of Science Core Collection, the study analyses publication trends in Ukrainian-authored articles in fully Gold OA journals of these publishers before and after 2022. The results show a marked post-2022 increase in Ukraine's Gold OA output, particularly in journals published by Springer Nature and Elsevier. Disciplinary and publisher-specific patterns are evident, with especially strong growth in the medical and applied sciences. The findings underscore the potential of targeted support measures during times of crisis, while also illustrating the inherent limitations of APC-based publishing models in fostering equitable scholarly communication.

STRATEGIC HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT PRACTICES AND EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE IN ETHIOPIAN PUBLIC SECTOR ORGANIZATIONS

Bonson Alemu Hambissa, Worku Mekonnen Tadesse

This study focuses on exploring the effect of Strategic Human Resource Development Practices (SHRDP) on employee performance as mediated by organizational learning in selected public sector organizations of Ethiopia. With a view to achieving this objective, descriptive and explanatory research design were applied. Moreover, the researcher employed mixed research approach, where qualitative approach is made to be embedded within the quantitative approach. The data were collected by means of questionnaires from a sample of 392 employees working in three regional Public Service and Human Resource Development Bureaus. The data analysis was done using SPSS version 27.0. Accordingly, regression analysis was used to determine if the effects of SHRD practices on employee performance is mediated by organizational learning. Particularly, Hayes Process Macro Mediation Analysis and Sobel test were used to determine if organizational learning mediate the relationship. Accordingly, the study found out that SHRD practices has significant effect on employee performance and organizational learning plays mediating role in the relationship between SHRD and employee performance. As the direct, indirect and total effects are all found significant, the mediation is partial. Hence, it is concluded that OL partially mediates the relationship between SHRD practices and employee’s individual level performance in the selected public sector organizations. Finally, the researchers recommend future researchers to focus on testing the moderating effects of OL in the relationship between SHRDP and employee performance.

Technology-assisted Journal Writing for Improving Student Mental Wellbeing: Humanoid Robot vs. Voice Assistant

Batuhan Sayis, Hatice Gunes

Conversational agents have a potential in improving student mental wellbeing while assisting them in self-disclosure activities such as journalling. Their embodiment might have an effect on what students disclose, and how they disclose this, and students overall adherence to the disclosure activity. However, the effect of embodiment in the context of agent assisted journal writing has not been studied. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the viability of using social robots (SR) and voice assistants (VA) for eliciting rich disclosures in journal writing that contributes to mental health status improvement in students over time. Forty two undergraduate and graduate students participated in the study that assessed the mood changes (via Brief Mood Introspection Scale, BMIS), level of subjective self-disclosure (via Subjective Self-Disclosure Questionnaire, SSDQ), and perceptions toward the agents (via Robot Social Attributes Scale, RoSAS) with and without agent (SR or VA) assisted journal writing. Results suggest that only in robot condition there are mood improvements, higher levels of disclosure, and positive perceptions over time in technology-assisted journal writing. Our results suggest that robot assisted journal writing has some advantages over voice assistant one for eliciting rich disclosures that contributes to mental health status improvement in students over time.

Expanding AI Awareness Through Everyday Interactions with AI: A Reflective Journal Study

Ashish Hingle, Aditya Johri

As the application of AI continues to expand, students in technology programs are poised to be both producers and users of the technologies. They are also positioned to engage with AI applications within and outside the classroom. While focusing on the curriculum when examining students' AI knowledge is common, extending this connection to students' everyday interactions with AI provides a more complete picture of their learning. In this paper, we explore student's awareness and engagement with AI in the context of school and their daily lives. Over six weeks, 22 undergraduate students participated in a reflective journal study and submitted a weekly journal entry about their interactions with AI. The participants were recruited from a technology and society course that focuses on the implications of technology on people, communities, and processes. In their weekly journal entries, participants reflected on interactions with AI on campus (coursework, advertises campus events, or seminars) and beyond (social media, news, or conversations with friends and family). The journal prompts were designed to help them think through what they had read, watched, or been told and reflect on the development of their own perspectives, knowledge, and literacy on the topic. Overall, students described nine categories of interactions: coursework, news and current events, using software and applications, university events, social media related to their work, personal discussions with friends and family, interacting with content, and gaming. Students reported that completing the diaries allowed them time for reflection and made them more aware of the presence of AI in their daily lives and of its potential benefits and drawbacks. This research contributes to the ongoing work on AI awareness and literacy by bringing in perspectives from beyond a formal educational context.

Maahanmuuttovastaisuudesta koronakriittisyyteen: Populistisen vastamedian laajeneva ekosysteemi journalismin näkökulmasta

Salla Tuomola

There He Goes: The Influencer–Sports Journalism of Fabrizio Romano on Twitter and Its Implications for Professionalism

Simon McEnnis

Fabrizio Romano’s sizeable social media followings and role as influencer–sports journalist warrant attention. Romano, known for his catchphrase ‘Here We Go’, specialises in football transfers and produces multi-platform content. This study investigates how Romano’s Twitter practice informs professional understandings of sports journalism. A content and textual analysis (n = 494) was conducted of one month of Romano’s tweets and replies. Tweets were categorised according to markers of sports journalism practice. Results show Romano is professionalising sports journalism on social media and subverting understandings of personal branding through favouring objective news over subjective opinion and focusing on the professional rather than the personal. Romano’s transfer news prioritises major European football clubs, which is consistent with the trajectory of sports journalism on digital platforms. Play-by-play commentary is a minor aspect of Romano’s Twitter output, which contributes to the debate on the significance of game coverage to contemporary sports journalism. Tweets did not mention the human rights issues surrounding the World Cup starting in Qatar, even though this was a key talking point. This finding suggests that the normative assumption that sports journalists should scrutinise power and/or highlight social injustice does not always apply to all practitioners in all contexts, particularly where ultra-specialist settings are concerned.

Relationships between Journal Publication, Citation, and Usage Metrics within a Carnegie R1 University Collection: A Correlation Analysis

William H. Mischo, Mary C. Schlembach, Elisandro Cabada

This study examines the correlational relationships between local journal authorship, local and external citation counts, full-text downloads, link-resolver clicks, and four global journal impact factor indices within an all-disciplines journal collection of 12,200 titles and six subject subsets at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) Library. While earlier investigations of the relationships between usage (downloads) and citation metrics have been inconclusive, this study shows strong correlations in the all-disciplines set and most subject subsets. The normalized Eigenfactor was the only global impact factor index that correlated highly with local journal metrics. Some of the identified disciplinary variances among the six subject subsets may be explained by the journal publication aspirations of UIUC researchers. The correlations between authorship and local citations in the six specific subject subsets closely match national department or program rankings.

Two indicators rule them all: Mean and standard deviation used to calculate other journal indicators based on log-normal distribution of citation counts

Zhesi Shen, Liying Yang, Jinshan Wu

Two journal-level indicators, respectively the mean ($m^i$) and the standard deviation ($v^i$) are proposed to be the core indicators of each journal and we show that quite several other indicators can be calculated from those two core indicators, assuming that yearly citation counts of papers in each journal follows more or less a log-normal distribution. Those other journal-level indicators include journal h index, journal one-by-one-sample comparison citation success index $S_j^i$, journal multiple-sample $K^i-K^j$ comparison success rate $S_{j,K^j}^{i,K^i }$, and minimum representative sizes $κ_j^i$ and $κ_i^j$, the average ranking of all papers in a journal in a set of journals($R^t$). We find that those indicators are consistent with those calculated directly using the raw citation data ($C^i=\{c_1^i,c_2^i,\dots,c_{N^i}^i \},\forall i$) of journals. In addition to its theoretical significance, the ability to estimate other indicators from core indicators has practical implications. This feature enables individuals who lack access to raw citation count data to utilize other indicators by simply using core indicators, which are typically easily accessible.

Kommentoijat julkisina osallistujina: Tutkimus verkkouutisia kommentoivien käyttäjien näkemyksistä julkisen osallistumisen kehyksessä

Veera Kangaspunta

Artikkeli tarkastelee verkkouutisia kommentoivien käyttäjien näkemyksiä kommentoinnista julkisen osallistumisen teoreettisessa kehyksessä. Tutkimusaineiston muodostaa rajattu osa avoimesta verkkokyselystä (N=1 221).

Modeling the obsolescence of research literature in disciplinary journals through the age of their cited references

Pablo Dorta-González, Emilio Gómez-Déniz

There are different citation habits in the research fields that influence the obsolescence of the research literature. We analyze the distinctive obsolescence of research literature in disciplinary journals in eight scientific subfields based on cited references distribution, as a synchronous approach. We use both Negative Binomial (NB) and Poisson distributions to capture this obsolescence. The corpus being examined is published in 2019 and covers 22,559 papers citing 872,442 references. Moreover, three measures to analyze the tail of the distribution are proposed: (i) cited reference survival rate, (ii) cited reference mortality rate, and (iii) cited reference percentile. These measures are interesting because the tail of the distribution collects the behavior of the citations at the time when the document starts to get obsolete in the sense that it is little cited (used). As main conclusion, the differences observed in obsolescence are so important even between disciplinary journals in the same subfield, that it would be necessary to use some measure for the tail of the citation distribution, such as those proposed in this paper, when analyzing in an appropriate way the long time impact of a journal.

Thirty years of TEFLIN Journal: A bibliometric portrait through the lens of Microsoft Academic

Abdul Syahid, Nur Mukminatien

Bibliometric studies are a rare undertaking in the field of English language teaching, especially at a journal level. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of TEFLIN Journal, this study exhibits a bibliometric portrait of its publication, indexation, and citation from 1990 to 2019. Two pieces of free software were adopted to conduct the descriptive and network analyses of bibliographic data from Microsoft Academic. The publication and citation metrics have risen during its lifetime. The bibliographic network identifies the most productive authors, institutions, and countries along with the co-authorship pattern, type of top-cited articles, and top-used keywords. The articles relatedness is also sighted in terms of the citation frequency and number of shared references. Even though the analyses were complicated by some missing articles and improper indexation, this study could still take a full-length bibliometric portrait of the journal during its 30-year journey between the commitment to competence and the quest for higher impact.

Automatic Analysis of Linguistic Features in Journal Articles of Different Academic Impacts with Feature Engineering Techniques

Siyu Lei, Ruiying Yang, Chu-Ren Huang

English research articles (RAs) are an essential genre in academia, so the attempts to employ NLP to assist the development of academic writing ability have received considerable attention in the last two decades. However, there has been no study employing feature engineering techniques to investigate the linguistic features of RAs of different academic impacts (i.e., the papers of high/moderate citation times published in the journals of high/moderate impact factors). This study attempts to extract micro-level linguistic features in high- and moderate-impact journal RAs, using feature engineering methods. We extracted 25 highly relevant features from the Corpus of English Journal Articles through feature selection methods. All papers in the corpus deal with COVID-19 medical empirical studies. The selected features were then validated of the classification performance in terms of consistency and accuracy through supervised machine learning methods. Results showed that 24 linguistic features such as the overlapping of content words between adjacent sentences, the use of third-person pronouns, auxiliary verbs, tense, emotional words provide consistent and accurate predictions for journal articles with different academic impacts. Lastly, the random forest model is shown to be the best model to fit the relationship between these 24 features and journal articles with high and moderate impacts. These findings can be used to inform academic writing courses and lay the foundation for developing automatic evaluation systems for L2 graduate students.

Mendeley Reader Counts for US Computer Science Conference Papers and Journal articles

Mike Thelwall

Although bibliometrics are normally applied to journal articles when used to support research evaluations, conference papers are at least as important in fast-moving computing-related fields. It is therefore important to assess the relative advantages of citations and altmetrics for computing conference papers to make an informed decision about which, if any, to use. This paper compares Scopus citations with Mendeley reader counts for conference papers and journal articles that were published between 1996 and 2018 in 11 computing fields and had at least one US author. The data showed high correlations between Scopus citation counts and Mendeley reader counts in all fields and most years, but with few Mendeley readers for older conference papers and few Scopus citations for new conference papers and journal articles. The results therefore suggest that Mendeley reader counts have a substantial advantage over citation counts for recently-published conference papers due to their greater speed, but are unsuitable for older conference papers.

The Integrated Impact Indicator (I3) Revisited: A Non-Parametric Alternative to the Journal Impact Factor

Loet Leydesdorff, Lutz Bornmann, Jonathan Adams

We propose the I3* indicator as a non-parametric alternative to the Journal Impact Factor (JIF) and h-index. We apply I3* to more than 10,000 journals. The results can be compared with other journal metrics. I3* is a promising variant within the general scheme of non-parametric indicators I3 introduced previously: it provides a single metric which correlates with both impact in terms of citations (c) and output in terms of publications (p). We argue for weighting using four percentile classes: the top-1% and top-10% as excellence indicators; the top-50% and bottom-50% as output indicators. Like the h-index, which also incorporates both c and p, I3*-values are size-dependent; however, division of I3* by the number of publications (I3*/N) provides a size-independent indicator which correlates strongly with the two- and five-year Journal Impact Factors (JIF2 and JIF5). Unlike the h-index, I3* correlates significantly with both the total number of citations and publications. The values of I3* and I3*/N can be statistically tested against the expectation or against one another using chi-square tests or effect sizes. A template (in Excel) is provided online for relevant tests.

REVIEW: Timely climate media strategy to empower citizens

David Robie

Journalism and Climate Crisis: Public Engagement, Media Alternatives, edited by Robert A. Hackett, Susan Forde, Shane Gunster and Kerrie Foxwell-Norton. Abingdon, UK: Routledge. 2017. 204 pages. ISBN 978-1-1389-5039-9 AT THE time of reviewing this important and timely book, Hurricane Irma had just ripped a trail of unprecedented destruction from Antigua, Barbuda and Saint Barthélemy in the eastern Caribbean to Florida with at least 81 deaths. Florida involved one of the largest mass evacuations in US history, with nearly 7 million people being warned to seek shelter elsewhere. Seventy per cent of Miami lost electricity at the height of the storm.
