The Role of Social Media in the 2023 Nigerian General Elections: An Analytical Appraisal of Selected Platforms

Etido Aniedi Okon, Dan-Ralph Ohewolam Ojedor, Babatunde Oriyomi Owolabi

The 2023 general elections in Nigeria witnessed a surge in political discourse on social media platforms. Analyzing the impact of social media on the voting process can shed light on the potential of digital platforms in bridging these divisions and promoting citizen involvement. Therefore, this study sought to guide evidence-based decision-making, policy development, and the creation of media literacy campaigns to strengthen an inclusive democratic system in Nigeria. The diversity of social media channels used during the general elections for 2023 is compared in this paper. We modified the mass media’s framing theory and the agenda-setting theory and chose the survey research approach. The results of this study indicate that social media political campaigns played a significant role in persuading voters in the 2023 general elections. The study also showed that social media political campaigns are quite successful, and Twitter in particular is a main avenue of political and electioneering communication.

Transition from Mythoverse Imaginary to Metaverse : Exploring the Liberal Arts Educational Value of Mythology in the Context of Literary Narratives

Hyounjin Ju

This research examines the evaluative and future-oriented predictions of the 21st century, defined as the ‘Century of Technology’, from a humanistic perspective, foreseeing its advancement propelled by sophisticated science and technology. In particular, this study aims to examine the cultural acceptance patterns regarding the concept of the ‘metaverse’, which is commonly referred to as a representation of digital technology emphasized at the beginning of the 21st century, from both humanistic and educational perspectives. Given the current lack of a clear definition, the study highlights the need for the intervention of humanistic reasoning, as the metaverse is generally understood either as 3D digital technology or represented as a ‘virtual world’. At the current juncture, as the implementation of the virtual world in the metaverse is perceived through character creation games or role-playing games such as ‘Second Life’, this study seeks to raise questions about the playful imagination that is projected onto the metaverse. Examining the phenomenon where internet users connect to the virtual world of the metaverse, placing a central focus on creating an ‘avatar’ or hero representation, the study aims to explore the inherent presence of imaginative desires, specifically the ‘human creative desire’, manifested in mythical worlds. With the advent of the metaverse era and the connection to virtual worlds, the human desire to create avatars reflects similarities to the ancient expression of the human creative desire in mythical worlds. The study also interprets how literary and artistic attempts of past centuries have echoed and intersected with this desire. Through this comparison, it was possible to recognize the significant influence of the ‘mythoverse’, or mythological imagination, in implementing the virtual world of the metaverse. Additionally, the study considered that if human life transitions to virtual worlds in the near future, the wellspring of humanistic knowledge, namely ‘myth’, could have a meaningful impact. Despite the technological advancements of the 21st century, the transition and realization from mythology to history, reality to dreams, the real world to virtual worlds, and the mythoverse to the metaverse transcend space and time. By emphasizing the value of mythology as a cultural heritage for humanity and highlighting the need for applying mythology in humanities education, this study aims to underscore the significance of myth in the cultural assets of humanity.

A Study on How to Cultivate Musical Transitions Using A. Copland’s Theory of Students of Liberal Arts Music Education at University

Bolim Lee

This study adopted literature analysis and hermeneutic research methods, utilizing Aaron Copland's theory of film music to explore strategies for promoting musical transfer among students in college-level general music education. Music courses in liberal arts education at the university level typically focus on enhancing students' appreciation and understanding of music. however, given the nature of such courses, there may be limitations in applying musical concepts to real-life situations unless a specific instructional design is considered. To address this issue, this study developed a preliminary educational model through a literature review, and subsequently refined and finalized the model by incorporating revisions identified during the actual process of designing lessons using film music. The findings indicate that the educational model employing film music has the potential to enhance students' musical comprehension and appreciation skills and serves as an effective tool for facilitating the transfer of musical concepts across various contexts. These results suggest that the integration of film music into liberal arts music education is an effective approach for expanding students' musical thinking and experiences, thus presenting a new direction for music education.

Effect of increased protein intake and exogenous ketosis on body composition, energy expenditure and exercise capacity during a hypocaloric diet in recreational female athletes

C. Hiroux, Moniek Schouten, I. de Glisezinski et al.

Introduction: Since low body weight is an important determinant of success in many sports such as gymnastics, martial arts and figure skating, athletes can benefit from effective weight loss strategies that preserve muscle mass and athletic performance. The present study investigates the effects of increased protein intake and exogenous ketosis on body composition, energy expenditure, exercise capacity, and perceptions of appetite and well-being during a hypocaloric diet in females. Methods: Thirty-two female recreational athletes (age: 22.2 ± .5 years; body weight: 58.3 ± .8 kg; BMI: 20.8 ± .2 kg·m−2) underwent 4 weeks of 30% caloric restriction and were randomized to receive either an increased daily amount of dietary protein (PROT, ∼2.0–2.2 g protein·kg−1·day−1), 3 × 20 g·day−1 of a ketone ester (KE), or an isocaloric placebo (PLA). Body composition was measured by DXA, resting energy expenditure (REE) by indirect calorimetry, exercise capacity during a VO2max test, appetite hormones were measured in serum, and perceptions of general well-being were evaluated via questionnaires. Results: The hypocaloric diet reduced body weight by 3.8 ± .3 kg in PLA, 3.2 ± .3 kg in KE and 2.4 ± .2 kg in PROT (Ptime<.0001). The drop in fat mass was similar between treatments (average: 2.6 ± .1 kg, Ptime<.0001), while muscle mass was only reduced in PLA and KE (average: .8 ± .2 kg, Ptime<.05), and remained preserved in PROT (Pinteraction<.01). REE [adjusted for lean mass] was reduced after caloric restriction in PLA (pre: 32.7 ± .5, post: 28.5 ± .6 kcal·day−1·kg−1) and PROT (pre: 32.9 ± 1.0, post: 28.4 ± 1.0 kcal·day−1·kg−1), but not in KE (pre: 31.8 ± .9, post: 30.4 ± .8 kcal·day−1·kg−1) (Pinteraction<.005). Furthermore, time to exhaustion during the VO2max test decreased in PLA (by 2.5 ± .7%, p < .05) but not in KE and PROT (Pinteraction<.05). Lastly, the perception of overall stress increased in PLA and PROT (p < .05), but not in KE (Pinteraction<.05). Conclusion: Increased protein intake effectively prevented muscle wasting and maintained exercise capacity during a period of caloric restriction in female recreational athletes. Furthermore, exogenous ketosis did not affect body composition, but showed its potential in weight management by preserving a drop in exercise capacity and REE and by improving overall stress parameters during a period of caloric restriction.

The impact thinking framework: a process for advancing research-to-practice initiatives in neuroaesthetics

Susan H. Magsamen, Tasha L. Golden, Catriona A. Towriss et al.

Neuroaesthetics research explores brain, body and behavioral responses to engagement with the arts and other aesthetic sensory experiences. Evidence indicates that such experiences can help address various psychological, neurological and physiological disorders, and that they can support mental and physical well-being and learning in the general population. The interdisciplinary nature of this work contributes to its impact and promise; however, it also creates challenges as various disciplines approach and define research and practice in varied ways. Recent field-wide reports have noted that a consensus translational framework is needed to support further neuroaesthetics research that can deliver meaningful knowledge and interventions. The Impact Thinking Framework (ITF) was designed to meet this need. Through a description of the framework’s nine iterative steps and a presentation of three case studies, this paper posits that the ITF can support researchers and practitioners in understanding and applying aesthetic experiences and the arts to advance health, well-being, and learning.

Water Element as an Aesthetic Aspect of Landscape Design

Rupali Gawde, Suman Sharma

Abstract: Researchers have considered and landscape architects have employed the aquatic element as a differentiating aesthetic aspect. Its meaning and perception in Both physical (visual and nonvisual) landscapes and virtual landscapes are affected by the idiosyncrasy and the observer's perceptual filter. Methodologies both theoretical and empirical have been presented on the role of water, whether lentic or lotic, to a great or small extent, sweet or sour. Seawater, whether turbulent or calm. In general, the aquatic element serves as a link between scenery, literature, or other arts, as well as a way to alleviate the monotony imposed by architects or artists uses solid materials. Water serves as a foundation for literary and artistic perceptions of landscape, as well as a neutral architectural element that cannot be properly classified as "natural" or "built." The diversity of its usage and perception, as well as its diachronic and extensive application and resonance, show the universality of the aquatic element as an aesthetic aspect and architectural means.

Xenophobia and Resignation in the Wake of the Mongol Conquest: Topical Allusions in Gong Kai’s Zhong Kui Scroll

Shi-yee Liu

Drawing on Zhong Kui’s legendary identity as a demon queller, this study suggests that Gong Kai (1222–1307) created a veiled autobiographical work, Zhongshan Going on Excursion in the Freer Gallery of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art in Washington, DC, that combines painting and inscription to project his unfulfilled aspiration to clear the nation of destructive evils. The demons to be expelled in his life as a Song patriot living into the Mongol Yuan were the powerful and abusive ethnic others, not limited to the ruling Mongols. Conflating himself with Zhong Kui by constructing a new, self-referential biography and image of the demon queller, Gong Kai conveyed his xenophobia during the dynastic transition through two topical allusions, the Muslim merchant-official Pu Shougeng’s fatal blow to the Song revivalist cause in Quanzhou in late 1276 and the Tibetan Buddhist leader Yang Lianzhenjia’s desecration of Song imperial tombs in Shaoxing in 1285. In the painting, Gong Kai confesses his resignation to the brutal new realities under alien rule by portraying Zhong Kui in an uncharacteristically subdued demeanor.

Ca’ Rezzonico in the 19th Century: The Dispersal of its Collections and the New Uses of the Palace

Valeria Paruzzo

In the wider phenomenon of the reception and readaptation of aristocratic architectural heritage in post-revolutionary Europe, the repurposing of former aristocratic palaces in Venice after the Fall of the Serenissima in 1797 constitutes a preeminent example. The paper takes as a case study Ca’ Rezzonico, one of the most splendid palaces along the Grand Canal, which has housed, since 1936, the illustrious Museum of 18th-century Venice (Museo del Settecento veneziano). After the Rezzonico family died out in 1810, the palace was gradually stripped of its art historical treasures and has served the most diverse purposes. From being the seat of the Austrian Tobacco Administration to housing dealers’ galleries, from hosting the ateliers of stage designers and international painters to being the home of renowned intellectuals and aesthetes, Ca’ Rezzonico’s rooms and walls have witnessed the profound changes in art, taste, and culture that rang through Europe during the long 19th century. The paper offers a comprehensive recon struction of the palace’s 19th-century history, drawing from both published and unpublished sources.

Appropriate Safeguards and Article 89 of the GDPR: Considerations for Biobank, Databank and Genetic Research

C. Staunton, S. Slokenberga, A. Parziale et al.

The collection and use of biological samples and data for genetic research, or for storage in a biobank or databank for future research, impacts upon many fundamental rights, including the right to dignity, the right to private and family life, the right to protection of personal data, the right to freedom of arts and sciences, and the right to non-discrimination. The use of genetic data and other health-related data in this context must be used in a manner that is rooted in human rights. Owing in part to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) coming into force, the right to the protection of personal data in the context of scientific research has been afforded increasing attention. The GDPR gives effect to the right to data protection, but states that this right must be balanced against other rights and interests. The GDPR applies to all personal data, with specific attention to special categories of data, that includes health and genetic data. The collection, access to, and sharing of such data must comply with the GDPR, and therefore directly impacts the use of such data in research. The GDPR does provide for several derogations and exemptions for research from many of the strict processing requirements. Such derogations are permitted only if there are appropriate safeguards in place. Article 89 states that to be appropriate, safeguards must be “in accordance” with the GDPR “for the rights and freedoms of the data subject”. In particular, those safeguards must ensure “respect for the principle of data minimisation”. Despite the importance of safeguards, the GDPR is silent as to the specific measures that may be adopted to meet these requirements. This paper considers Article 89 and explores safeguards that may be deemed appropriate in the context of biobanks, databanks, and genetic research.

Exploring the Metaverse Reuse Intention of University Liberal Arts Computer Class for Students through the Technology Acceptance Model

Hyojung Kim, Saenae Oh

In this study, we analyzed the metaverse reuse intention of college students. We introduced the “Zepeto” metaverse platform in liberal arts computer classes at a four-year university. In this study, the technology acceptance model was used as a theoretical background, and self-efficacy, perceived pleasure, and information quality were used as research variables. This study's independent variables are self-efficacy, perceived pleasure, information quality, perceived usefulness, and perceived ease of use. The study identified the intention of college students to use the metaverse as a survey method. As a result of the study, we found that self-efficacy had a significant effect on university liberal arts computer ease of instruction. Also, metaverse reuse intention along with perceived ease of use, and the relationship between perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use, had a positive effect. We found that perceived play had a positive effect on perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and metaverse intention. Information quality had a significant effect on perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and intention to reuse the metaverse. When self-efficacy, perceived pleasure, and information quality were viewed as independent variables, and metaverse reuse intention was viewed as a dependent variable, there was a mediating effect between perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use.

What Motivates Students About Open Pedagogy? Motivational Regulation Through the Lens of Self-Determination Theory

Eric Werth, Katherine Williams

Open pedagogy is growing in popularity as an instructional method to decentralize classroom power dynamics, engage students, and provide greater meaning to student work. To investigate the impact of open pedagogy on motivation, interviews were conducted with first-year college students at a four-year liberal arts college after completing a semester-long project based on this pedagogical approach. Student responses were assessed using self-determination theory as a theoretical framework, particularly in relation to the motivation regulatory styles displayed by research participants. Results indicate that students experienced various forms of extrinsic motivation during the project based on open pedagogy, with autonomous forms of regulation being more prevalent than controlled regulation. Interview data also suggest that agency plays a role in mediating the internalization of student motivation. Based on these findings, suggestions are provided to the design of assignments in general and open pedagogy specifically to enhance development of autonomous forms of motivation.

Moving on up: ‘first in family’ university graduates in England

Morag Henderson, N. Shure, Anna Adamecz-Völgyi

ABSTRACT This paper provides the first quantitative analysis on ‘first in family’ (FiF) university graduates in the UK. Using a nationally representative dataset that covers a recent cohort in England, we identify the proportion of FiF young people at age 25 as 18%, comprising nearly two-thirds of university graduates. Comparing groups with no parental higher education we find that ethnic minorities and those with higher levels of prior attainment are more likely to become a FiF, while those who are FiF are more likely to study Law, Economics and Management and less likely to study other Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities than students whose parents are graduated. We also find evidence that FiF students are less likely to graduate from elite universities and are at greater risk of dropout in general, even after prior educational attainment and socioeconomic status are taken into account.

A Study on the Operation of Liberal Arts Curriculum Based on Core Competencies -Focusing on the Case of N University

Eun Sook Park

This study is a case study regarding the operation of the liberal arts curriculum based on core competencies. It was conducted to explore the developmental direction of the competency-based curriculum. The study investigated the trend in the changes of the competency-based curriculum of N University, as well as the actual conditions and demands of the faculty’ capacity-based curriculum operation.
N University's competency-based education has grown through a three-stage transformation process. The quality of education has been managed by diagnosing the effectiveness of competency-based education at the curriculum level through competency matching with the competency of the subject. While professors are highly aware of the necessity of competency-based education, they are relatively inadequate when it comes to teaching various curriculums. Therefore, for the purpose of competency-based education, it is necessary to diversify the curriculum.
The professor was engaged in the following activities to operate the competency-based curriculum: student-centered class preparation and activity-oriented teaching methods, one-on-one feedback and guidance on activity experiences, observation and activity-oriented competency evaluation, and curriculum improvement plans reflecting student opinions, etc. Through the exploration of this process of change, and based on the recognition of the professors, suggestions on educational policy, educational content, and educational methods were made.
The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that a specific case of competency-based education at a certain university, along with the perception of professors with competency-based education experience, suggests the direction in which competency-based education is heading.

The General F_(a,λ) (K,T)- Structure Satisfying aF^K+λ^r F^T=0 on M^n and Lifts Problems Associated with the Structure

HAŞİM ÇAYIR

In this paper our aim is to get the general structure equation which covers previously acquired structures. In this context this paper consists of three main sections. In the first section, we define the general F_(a,λ) (K,T)-structure satisfying aF^K+λ^r F^T=0,(F≠0,K≥3,T≥1 and (K≥T),a and λ are non zero complex numbers, r some finite integer) on manifold M^n and studied to give some special examples. The second part, we find the integrability conditions by calculating Nijenhuis tensors of the horizontal lifts of the general F_(a,λ) (K,T)-structure satisfying aF^K+λ^r F^T=0. Later, we get the results of Tachibana operators applied to vector and covector fields according to the horizontal lifts of the general F_(a,λ) (K,T)-structure in cotangent bundle T^* (M^n). In addition, we have studied to show the purity conditions of Sasakian metric with respect to the horizontal lifts of the structure. In the final section, all results obtained in the second section were investigated according to the complete and horizontal lifts of the general F_(a,λ) (K,T)-structure on tangent bundle T(M^n).

“The Most Perfect Manner”: Paul Weber and the Transnationalism of US Landscapes

Thomas Busciglio-Ritter

I was struck that contemporary viewers of Weber’s painting apparently did not mind the vagueness of the image’s relation to the American land it was thought to depict. . . . Weber was thought to ably capture a quintessential national identity through nature, even if he appeared unwilling to brand his work as a glorification of a strictly American spirit.
