Instruction-Tuned LLMs for Parsing and Mining Unstructured Logs on Leadership HPC Systems

Ahmad Maroof Karimi, Jong Youl Choi, Charles Qing Cao et al.

Leadership-class HPC systems generate massive volumes of heterogeneous, largely unstructured system logs. Because these logs originate from diverse software, hardware, and runtime layers, they exhibit inconsistent formats, making structure extraction and pattern discovery extremely challenging. Therefore, robust log parsing and mining is critical to transform this raw telemetry into actionable insights that reveal operational patterns, diagnose anomalies, and enable reliable, efficient, and scalable system analysis. Recent advances in large language models (LLMs) offer a promising new direction for automated log understanding in leadership-class HPC environments. To capitalize on this opportunity, we present a domain-adapted, instruction-following, LLM-driven framework that leverages chain-of-thought (CoT) reasoning to parse and structure HPC logs with high fidelity. Our approach combines domain-specific log-template data with instruction-tuned examples to fine-tune an 8B-parameter LLaMA model tailored for HPC log analysis. We develop a hybrid fine-tuning methodology that adapts a general-purpose LLM to domain-specific log data, enabling privacy-preserving, locally deployable, fast, and energy-efficient log-mining approach. We conduct experiments on a diverse set of log datasets from the LogHub repository. The evaluation confirms that our approach achieves parsing accuracy on par with significantly larger models, such as LLaMA 70B and Anthropic's Claude. We further validate the practical utility of our fine-tuned LLM model by parsing over 600 million production logs from the Frontier supercomputer over a four-week window, uncovering critical patterns in temporal dynamics, node-level anomalies, and workload-error log correlations.

Women in Theoretical Quantum Physics in Brazil:demographics, career profiles, recognition, and leadership

Tatiana Pauletti, Paula Homem de Mello, Thereza Paiva et al.

Gender imbalance in Physics remains a persistent global challenge, and Brazil is no exception. While women account for only 24% of Physics faculty in the country, their representation in Quantum Physics is even smaller. In this work, we provide the first comprehensive overview of women working in Theoretical Quantum Physics in Brazil, here referred to as the SheQ (She + Quantum) community. Using data from the CNPq Lattes platform, we identify 93 researchers and analyze their geographic distribution, academic trajectories, scientific productivity, international experience, recognition through awards and fellowships, and engagement with initiatives promoting gender equity. Our results reveal both progress and persistent disparities: SheQ researchers have a strong scientific output, leadership roles, and international training; yet, their recognition through productivity fellowships remains modest, and their involvement in gender-related initiatives, although increasing among younger generations, remains limited. By combining quantitative indicators with institutional perspectives, we highlight structural barriers as well as opportunities for fostering a more inclusive environment in Quantum Physics. his study thus contributes to a broader reflection on how diversity not only promotes fairness but also strengthens creativity, innovation, and scientific progress.

FLAS: a combination of proactive and reactive auto-scaling architecture for distributed services

Víctor Rampérez, Javier Soriano, David Lizcano et al.

Cloud computing has established itself as the support for the vast majority of emerging technologies, mainly due to the characteristic of elasticity it offers. Auto-scalers are the systems that enable this elasticity by acquiring and releasing resources on demand to ensure an agreed service level. In this article we present FLAS (Forecasted Load Auto-Scaling), an auto-scaler for distributed services that combines the advantages of proactive and reactive approaches according to the situation to decide the optimal scaling actions in every moment. The main novelties introduced by FLAS are (i) a predictive model of the high-level metrics trend which allows to anticipate changes in the relevant SLA parameters (e.g. performance metrics such as response time or throughput) and (ii) a reactive contingency system based on the estimation of high-level metrics from resource use metrics, reducing the necessary instrumentation (less invasive) and allowing it to be adapted agnostically to different applications. We provide a FLAS implementation for the use case of a content-based publish-subscribe middleware (E-SilboPS) that is the cornerstone of an event-driven architecture. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first auto-scaling system for content-based publish-subscribe distributed systems (although it is generic enough to fit any distributed service). Through an evaluation based on several test cases recreating not only the expected contexts of use, but also the worst possible scenarios (following the Boundary-Value Analysis or BVA test methodology), we have validated our approach and demonstrated the effectiveness of our solution by ensuring compliance with performance requirements over 99% of the time.

TaMPERing with Large Language Models: A Field Guide for using Generative AI in Public Administration Research

Michael Overton, Barrie Robison, Lucas Sheneman

The integration of Large Language Models (LLMs) into social science research presents transformative opportunities for advancing scientific inquiry, particularly in public administration (PA). However, the absence of standardized methodologies for using LLMs poses significant challenges for ensuring transparency, reproducibility, and replicability. This manuscript introduces the TaMPER framework-a structured methodology organized around five critical decision points: Task, Model, Prompt, Evaluation, and Reporting. The TaMPER framework provides scholars with a systematic approach to leveraging LLMs effectively while addressing key challenges such as model variability, prompt design, evaluation protocols, and transparent reporting practices.

Reframing the Service Environment in Collegiate Sport: A Transformative Sport Service Research Approach

Yiqi Yang, Erika Gray, Keita Kinoshita et al.

This study applies a transformative sport service research approach to examine student-athletes’ wellness within a collegiate sport setting. Sixteen semi-structured interviews were completed during the COVID-19 pandemic and the stop of play in Canada (early 2021). Findings denoted wellness was influenced by this time period as well as organizational factors which are within the purview of existing management practices. The study details the service environment to understand physical and mental well-being while taking into consideration the general and organizational environments which influence the student-athletes. Findings demonstrate that eudaimonic-related experiences (e.g., learning, development, relationship) are related to student-athletes' mental well-being. This research underpins the role of education, policies, and communication, which draws several implications for the service environment in a collegiate sport setting and the key stakeholders involved in producing an environment to enhance student-athletes’ experience. The paper elaborates on the importance of the service environment and provides evidence of what student-athletes suggest management can change and focus their efforts on towards creating a transformative service environment. Theoretical implications for the transformative service research are put forward, including the co-creative aspects to determine programming which could contribute towards student-athletes wellness. Broader suggestions for change within the sport system and future research are also advanced.

Investigation of P. Vivax Elimination via Mass Drug Administration

Md Nurul Anwar, James M. McCaw, Alexander E. Zarebski et al.

Plasmodium vivax is the most geographically widespread malaria parasite due to its ability to remain dormant (as a hypnozoite) in the human liver and subsequently reactivate. Given the majority of P. vivax infections are due to hypnozoite reactivation, targeting the hypnozoite reservoir with a radical cure is crucial for achieving P. vivax elimination. Stochastic effects can strongly influence dynamics when disease prevalence is low or when the population size is small. Hence, it is important to account for this when modelling malaria elimination.cWe use a stochastic multiscale model of P. vivax transmission to study the impacts of multiple rounds of mass drug administration (MDA) with a radical cure, accounting for superinfection and hypnozoite dynamics. Our results indicate multiple rounds of MDA with a high-efficacy drug are needed to achieve a substantial probability of elimination. This work has the potential to help guide P. vivax elimination strategies by quantifying elimination probabilities for an MDA approach.

Application of Text Analytics in Public Service Co-Creation: Literature Review and Research Framework

Nina Rizun, Aleksandra Revina, Noella Edelmann

The public sector faces several challenges, such as a number of external and internal demands for change, citizens' dissatisfaction and frustration with public sector organizations, that need to be addressed. An alternative to the traditional top-down development of public services is co-creation of public services. Co-creation promotes collaboration between stakeholders with the aim to create better public services and achieve public values. At the same time, data analytics has been fuelled by the availability of immense amounts of textual data. Whilst both co-creation and TA have been used in the private sector, we study existing works on the application of Text Analytics (TA) techniques on text data to support public service co-creation. We systematically review 75 of the 979 papers that focus directly or indirectly on the application of TA in the context of public service development. In our review, we analyze the TA techniques, the public service they support, public value outcomes, and the co-creation phase they are used in. Our findings indicate that the TA implementation for co-creation is still in its early stages and thus still limited. Our research framework promotes the concept and stimulates the strengthening of the role of Text Analytics techniques to support public sector organisations and their use of co-creation process. From policy-makers' and public administration managers' standpoints, our findings and the proposed research framework can be used as a guideline in developing a strategy for the designing co-created and user-centred public services.

Longitudinal Analysis of Head Coach Turnover of Women’s NCAA D-I Teams

Nicole LaVoi, Hannah Silva-Breen

The goal of the current study was to add to existing literature pertaining to occupational turnover of sport coaches through examination of longitudinal data of head coaches of women’s teams in select NCAA Division-I conferences. The current study is the first of its kind, providing longitudinal data to help prove or dispel common narratives about women coaches and illuminate patterns of gender and discrimination. The average rate of head coach turnover of NCAA Division I FBS women’s sport teams is lower than the average rate of employee turnover in the United States. Although encouraging for the entire coaching profession, discriminatory turnover patterns appear to be prevalent. Men in this sample were twice as likely as women to be coaching, regardless of the institutional reason for their departure. When men are fired, they have a greater likelihood to be rehired, especially at the same level and in the same role. Men are also afforded twice the opportunity, as they can in turn coach men, coed, or women, while women are relegated to coaching women or coed teams. Athletic departments and policy makers should use these insights to improve their coach hiring and retention practices

A Computational Social Science Approach to Understanding Predictors of Chafee Service Receipt

Jason Yan, Melanie Sage, Seventy F. Hall et al.

The John H. Chafee Foster Care Program for Successful Transition to Adulthood (CFCIP) allocates funding to provide services to youth who are likely to age out of foster care. These services, covering everything from mentoring to financial aid, are expected to be distributed in ways that prepare youth for life after care. However, surprisingly little is known about which youth receive which services. The present work makes use of the National Youth in Transition Database (NYTD), a large-scale administrative dataset that tracks services allocated to youth that use CFCIP funds. Specifically, we conduct a forensic social science analysis of the NYTD data. To do so, we first use computational methods to help us uncover the most important factors associated with service receipt. Doing so helps us to identify three major factors-youth age, youth time in care, and the state in which a youth is in care-that are most heavily associated with service receive. We then conduct an analysis that links existing theory to these factors, expanding our understanding of how services are allocated and paving the way to future work to understand why such associations exist.

Unpacking the influence of flight booking websites to e-loyalty: Empirical evidence from South East Asian Millennials

Donny Susilo

This study aims to understand how Southeast Asian Millennials become loyal to a flight booking website, using the results of an online survey and a E-loyalty model, and structural equation modeling. The findings show that good utilitarian features of websites can significantly increase brand equity and positive online experience (flow) of website users while good hedonic features of websites can significantly increase positive online experience and trust of website users. Brand equity, positive online experience and trust have a direct and significant effect on e-loyalty. When the brand equity of a website, positive online experience and trust of website users are higher, the e-loyalty of millennial customers towards the website is higher. The effect of utilitarian features on trust and hedonic features on brand equity are found to be insignificant. Nevertheless, all the other hypotheses are accepted. This study has successfully expanded Bilgihan’s E-loyalty model application to a different product (flight booking websites) and geographical location (Southeast Asia), proving its generalizability.

Online Administration of Research-Based Assessments

Ben Van Dusen, Mollee Shultz, Jayson M. Nissen et al.

The number and use of research-based assessments (RBAs) has grown significantly over the last several decades. Data from RBAs can be compared against national datasets to provide instructors with empirical evidence on the efficacy of their teaching practices. Many physics instructors, however, opt not to use RBAs due to barriers such as having to use class time to administer them. In this article we examine how these barriers can be mitigated through online administrations of RBAs, particularly through the use of free online RBA platforms that automate administering, scoring, and analyzing RBAs (e.g., the Learning About STEM Student Outcomes [LASSO], Colorado Learning Attitudes About Science Survey for Experimental Physics [E-CLASS], Physics Lab Inventory of Critical thinking [PLIC], and PhysPort DataExplorer platforms). We also explore the research into common concerns of administering RBAs online and conclude with a practical how-to guide for instructors.

Socially competent robots: adaptation improves leadership performance in groups of live fish

Tim Landgraf, Hauke J. Moenck, Gregor H. W. Gebhardt et al.

Collective motion is commonly modeled with simple interaction rules between agents. Yet in nature, numerous observables vary within and between individuals and it remains largely unknown how animals respond to this variability, and how much of it may be the result of social responses. Here, we hypothesize that Guppies (\textit{Poecilia reticulata}) respond to avoidance behaviors of their shoal mates and that "socially competent" responses allow them to be more effective leaders. We test this hypothesis in an experimental setting in which a robotic Guppy, called RoboFish, is programmed to adapt to avoidance reactions of its live interaction partner. We compare the leadership performance between socially competent robots and two non-competent control behaviors and find that 1) behavioral variability itself appears attractive and that socially competent robots are better leaders that 2) require fewer approach attempts to 3) elicit longer average following behavior than non-competent agents. This work provides evidence that social responsiveness to avoidance reactions plays a role in the social dynamics of guppies. We showcase how social responsiveness can be modeled and tested directly embedded in a living animal model using adaptive, interactive robots.
