Generalized nearby cycles via relative and logarithmic $\mathscr{D}$-modules
Lei Wu
For a regular map $F$ from a complex smooth affine variety $X$ to $\mathbb A^r_\mathbb C$, we construct generalized nearby-cycle modules of a regular holonomic $\mathscr D$-modules $\mathcal M$ along log strata with the log structure induced by the graph of $F$, whose relative supports are infinite unions of translated linear subvarieties of $\mathbb C^r$ determined by the zero loci of Bernstein-Sato ideals along monoid ideals. For a fixed log stratum, the nearby-cycle module corresponds to the Sabbah specialization complex of DR$(\mathcal M)$ under the relative regular Riemann-Hilbert correspondence of Fiorot-Fernandes-Sabbah, which generalizes the classical comparison theorem of Kashiwara-Malgrange for Deligne's nearby cycles. As an application, when $\mathcal M=\mathcal O_X$, we give a topological interpretation of the zero loci of Bernstein-Sato ideals of $F$ along monoid ideals under the exponential map, which answers a question of Budur-Shi-Zuo.
Effect of kappa-modified polarization force on Jeans instability in nonthermal EiBI-gravitating dust clouds
Dipankar Ray, Pralay Kumar Karmakar, Siddhartha Saikia
A semi-analytic model is developed to study the effects of kappa-distributed lighter constituents and the associated kappa-modified polarization force on the classical Jeans instability in dust molecular clouds (DMCs). The constitutive electrons and ions are considered to follow a nonthermal kappa-velocity distribution law, while the constitutive massive dust grains are treated as the EiBI-gravitating fluids. A linearized quadratic dispersion relation is derived using spherical normal mode analysis. The resulting dispersion relation and its corresponding modified instability criteria are analyzed in the hydrodynamic and kinetic regimes. The oscillatory and propagating mode characteristics are illustratively analyzed. It is seen that the EiBI gravity introduces a new velocity term in the dispersion relation. In contrast, the nonthermal kappa-distributed constituents significantly enhance the polarization force against their respective Maxwellian counterparts. The kappa-modified polarization force and the negative EiBI gravity parameter have destabilizing influences, unlike the positive EiBI parameter. An enhanced polarization interaction parameter and a positive EiBI parameter reduce the real normalized frequency. Consequently, the phase velocity exhibits strong dispersion, increasing with wavenumber until reaching saturation, after which it transitions into a weakly dispersive regime. These findings provide new insights into the formation of smaller astrophysical structures via the non-local Jeans instability in the ultracompact HII regions of dense DMCs.
The Erasure of Historical Consciousness and the Hegemony of the Present in Time Travel Films
Tamás Csönge
The paper discusses how the present became absolute and colonized the historical past in the mass culture of late capitalism, by examining the ideological premise of time travel films of the 1980s and 1990s. Drawing on Fredric Jameson’s and David Lowenthal’s views of history and popular culture, the article suggests that the primacy of the present and the disappearance of historical consciousness becomes really striking in narratives that thematize the unnatural structures and causal logics of multiple, co-existing temporal planes. The course of history is presented as an evolution towards superior social structures, culminating in the liberal democracy of the United States, and any interference with this system is portrayed as a threat to social order. Its hegemonic aspirations are glorified in the narratives through the affirmative attitude of the fictionalized historical characters towards it.

Czech Structuralists on Rhythm in Epic Literature
Ondřej Sládek
Czech structuralism is closely linked to the Prague Linguistic Circle (or Prague School), but it also developed independently of this institution during the 20th century. The theoretical and methodological legacy of Czech structuralism can be studied regarding the way in which some Czech scholars dealt with the issue of rhythm in epic literature. This study aims to briefly introduce and summarize the most important contributions of Czech structuralists to this issue. The study focuses on the ideas of Vilém Mathesius, Jan Mukařovský, Felix Vodička, Miroslav Červenka and Milan Jankovič. The core of the study is an outline of the conception of Jan Mukařovský, who in his university lectures attempted to develop a systematic plan for narrative research. The paper concludes with a summary of the main approaches of Czech structuralists to rhythm in epic literature and a reflection on the influence of new terms and concepts introduced by M. Červenka and M. Jankovič (e.g. rhythmic focus, rhythmic vocabulary, stream, etc.) on the further development of this issue.

Multiple reflections on Huygens' principle
Kees Wapenaar
According to Huygens' principle, all points on a wave front act as secondary sources emitting spherical waves, and the envelope of these spherical waves forms a new wave front. In the mathematical formulation of Huygens' principle, the waves emitted by the secondary sources are represented by Green's functions. In many present-day applications of Huygens' principle, these Green's functions are replaced by their time-reversed versions, thus forming a basis for backpropagation, imaging, inversion, seismic interferometry, etc. However, when the input wave field is available only on a single open boundary, this approach has its limitations. In particular, it does not properly account for multiply reflected waves. This is remedied by a modified form of Huygens' principle, in which the Green's functions are replaced by focusing functions. The modified Huygens' principle forms a basis for imaging, inverse scattering, monitoring of induced sources, etc., thereby properly taking multiply reflected waves into account.

Bibliometric Patterns and Concept Evolution Trajectories in research publications in Future Generation Computer Systems
Prashasti Singh, Vivek Kumar Singh, Hiran H. Lathabai
Future Generation Computer Systems (FGCS), published by Elsevier, is a prestigious peer reviewed journal that started in 1984. As on date of writing this article, the journal is in its 137th volume. Owing to its publication quality and continued academic standards, it has been indexed by major academic databases such as Web of Science, Scopus, DOAJ etc. It is now ranked among the top journals in the area of Computer Science (General). Motivated by the long history, academic reputation and prestige of the journal, the present study attempts to do a bibliometric and text-based analysis of publications in the journal during the period of 1984-2020 (37 years). Bibliometric analysis helped to identify publishing and citation patterns, authorship and collaboration structure, funding patterns of the published research, open access and altmetric impact, gender distribution and SDG connections etc. The text-integrated path analysis helped in identifying the thematic structure and major concept evolution trajectories. The results of the analysis indicate that the FGCS journal is a high-quality research journal that has grown over time in terms of publications, citations and rankings. It publishes articles in specified thematic areas, with cloud, grid, IoT, Blockchain etc. found as the major themes addressed. Knowledge extension from cloud computing to multi-domain networks is witnessed and a divergence towards service function chains, distributed machine learning and edge computing systems is visible. The article thus presents very informative and useful insight about research publication trends in FGCS.

‘The province…But, indeed, that is Russia!’
Edith Clowes
“The Imagined Province” investigates the shifts in what the “idea of the province” in the period of world war and the Russian revolution and civil war. I argue that the mental and emotional valence of Russia’s map changed markedly over these nine years as regionalist and provincial pride came into literary culture, urging a fresh view of central Russia outside the capital cities. This change of perspective emerges in essays, stories, and poetry throughout Central Russia, though this article focuses mainly on the Volga Region. Authors of many different political stripes contributed to this shift—among them, regionalists like Evgenii Chirikov and Nikolai Kliuev, pro-revolutionary socialists such as Maksim Gor’kii and Matvei Dudorov, and Bolsheviks like Aleksei Dorogoichenko and Fedor Bogorodskii. As the Bolsheviks regathered Russia, these provincial voices were overpowered by more prominent voices from the center. Nonetheless, they established a “usable history” that remains a substrate of Russian culture even today, challenging the simplistic binary juxtaposing “capital” and “province.”

Quasimodo and the Spiritualization of Cruelty, Saba’s Uncanny Shortcuts, Montale’s Grotesque Imaginary: Complex Genealogies of Italian Poetry on the Jewish Genocide
Tommaso Pepe
The memory of anti-Jewish persecution intersected the work of prominent authors in Italian twentieth century poetry, often following oblique and unexpected trajectories that touch authors such as Montale, Sereni, Fortini, Pasolini, Saba, Levi, Quasimodo. This essay intends to probe a genealogical juncture in this poetic history, bringing into purview a series of poliperspectival models of poetic writing about the Shoah elaborated by Salvatore Quasimodo, Umberto Saba and Eugenio Montale in the early postwar years. If Quasimodo’s poesia civilepaved the way to a literary monumentalization of memory, such poetic configuration ultimately might be seen to hinge on what Friedrich Nietzsche critically termed a “spiritualization of cruelty.” Thus it was progressively identified as a potential anti-model for Italian poetry dealing with the memory of the persecution – as a reading of Montale’s treatment of this theme reveals. On the other hand, Saba condesned his afterthoughts about the “cannibalism” of racial persecution in Scorciatoie e raccontini(Shortcuts and Very Short Stories): a book of poèmes en prosethat possesses “the accent of poetry and the rigor of aphorism.” These uncanny and ironical shortcuts raise corrosive doubts about the value attached to a purported monumental memory of the Shoah and bring to attention the existence of genealogical complexity in Italian poetic writing about the Jewish genocide that calls for adequate critical recognition.

The large charge expansion at large N
Anton de la Fuente
The scaling dimensions of charged operators in conformal field theory have recently been predicted to exhibit universal behavior in the large charge limit. We verify this behavior in the 2+1 dimensional CPN model. Specifically, we numerically compute the scaling dimensions of the lowest dimension monopole operators with charges Q = 1, 2, ... , 100 to subleading order in large N. The coefficients of the large Q expansion are extracted through a fit, and the predicted universal O(1) contribution is verified to the subpercent level.

Structure estimation of binary graphical models on stratified data: application to the description of injury tables for victims of road accidents
Nadim Ballout, Vivian Viallon
Graphical models are used in many applications such as medical diagnostic, computer security, etc. More and more often, the estimation of such models has to be performed on several predefined strata of the whole population. For instance, in epidemiology and clinical research, strata are often defined according to age, gender, treatment or disease type, etc. In this article, we propose new approaches aimed at estimating binary graphical models on such strata. Our approaches are obtained by combining well-known methods when estimating one single binary graphical model, with penalties encouraging structured sparsity, and which have recently been shown appropriate when dealing with stratified data. Empirical comparions on synthetic data highlight that our approaches generally outperform the competitors we considered. An application is provided where we study associations among injuries suffered by victims of road accidents according to road user type.
Formato antologia e formato libro.

Narrative and Cultural History in the Hippocratic Treatise On Ancient Medicine
Marco Romani Mistretta
This paper focuses on the ‘history of medicine’ outlined by the author of the Hippocratic treatise On Ancient Medicine, in order to reflect on the relationship between medicine and narrative in Classical Greece. At the outset of the work, the author provides an account of the beginnings of his discipline, conceiving of medicine’s history as a continuum of research and findings that unravel the nature of the human body and the cause of diseases. As this paper shows, the physician-narrator assigns to his craft a crucial role in fostering the birth and progress of human civilization. The rhetorical goals of the historical account are, as I argue, attained through a subtle narrative strategy. In fact, the narrator locates the origins of medicine within a teleological framework, marked by strong emphasis on the heuristic method that characterizes the past, the present, and the future of medical knowledge at once.

Spazi d’autore. Riscrittura e passaggi di testo ne La strada di Levi
Matteo Martelli
The essay suggests an analysis of the documentary film La strada di Levi and the correlated work La prova. Focusing on Primo Levi’s book La tregua, these works show a different attitude about adaptation through a constant reorientation of the source text and its juxtaposition with new texts and images, and through a projection of these elements within additional languages. In this way, the authors, Davide Ferrario and Marco Belpoliti, offer an experience of an intermedial artistic practice that involves a reflection on the cultural forms through which the texts interpret the reality (and its temporality or memory) and its translation through multiple semiotic codes. The effect of this kind of work is the perception of the documentary film as a network that enable a strong dialectic about the present, the past and its memories in the way to attempt a thick description of our culture and to draw some maps of the contemporary world.
