L’affaire de la Cour des métiers

Anne Henriette Auffret

Every international exhibition or world fair has what the French call its ‘clou’, its ‘nail’ or highlight, a main attraction designed to ensure the success of the whole affair. At the 1925 international exhibition of modern decorative and industrial arts, this highlight was supposed to be the Cour des métiers, the crafts courtyard, a sort of contemplative cloister with simple geometric lines designed by the exhibition’s main architect, Charles Plumet. This ensemble has disappeared today, but certain parts of it survive and numerous documents and pictures keep traces of it, allowing us to take a look at the historic, aesthetic, geographical and heritage issues involved. Designed as the central point of the exhibition, this courtyard expressed the thinking and tastes of the organisers, in particular Paul Leon, the assistant curator, and Louis Bonnier, director of the architectural services. The courtyard had an ample decoration of statues, bas-reliefs and nine marouflaged canvasses attached to the walls. These celebrated themes from daily life with decorative paintings executed by d’Octave Guillonnet, Henri Marret and Henri Rapin, all giving an overall tone to the event and fixing an image for the style of the period. These canvasses, however, were not the decoration initially intended. To begin with, after an examination of their proposed designs, seven painters had been chosen to decorate the courtyard with frescoes. This interrupted project became something of an ‘affair’, on account of the personality of the art critic Gabriel Mourey. This affair gives us indications about the organisation of the exhibition, the circumstances of the commission, its relations to modernity and the heritage future of the works, designed only for temporary showing. Using archival sources, articles in the press and photographs all analysed during my thesis research, this article sets out to retrace the genesis, the reception and the posterity of the paintings, in France and in the United States. It looks at the place of mural decorations within the Art Deco heritage, between memories and the future.

Features and criteria for color code classification of folk costume on the example of the republic of Udmurtia

Sergeeva Anna V.

The issue of classifying the coloristic information contained in national costumes is considered as an invariable element of the external attributes of ethnonational identity using the case of the Republic of Udmurtia national costume. The research work employs a systems approach and general scientific research methods (analysis, synthesis, induction, deduction, comparison, generalization and systematization), as well as a number of special methods: historiographic analysis of research literature on the topic and methods of art historical analysis. The findings of this research works are as follows: the color codes in the national costumes of the peoples of the Republic of Udmurtia contain references to several key aspects of ethnonational identity: social status, marital status, age, and gender. The color codes also differ depending on geography: the northern costume of the Udmurts differs from the southern version both in cut and decor, and in the color scheme of the costume. It is concluded that the color code is a visual expression of the Udmurts’ ethnocultural identity.

On learning higher-order cumulants in diffusion models

Gert Aarts, Diaa E. Habibi, Lingxiao Wang et al.

To analyse how diffusion models learn correlations beyond Gaussian ones, we study the behaviour of higher-order cumulants, or connected n-point functions, under both the forward and backward process. We derive explicit expressions for the moment- and cumulant-generating functionals, in terms of the distribution of the initial data and properties of forward process. It is shown analytically that during the forward process higher-order cumulants are conserved in models without a drift, such as the variance-expanding scheme, and that therefore the endpoint of the forward process maintains nontrivial correlations. We demonstrate that since these correlations are encoded in the score function, higher-order cumulants are learnt in the backward process, also when starting from a normal prior. We confirm our analytical results in an exactly solvable toy model with nonzero cumulants and in scalar lattice field theory.

Load Asymptotics and Dynamic Speed Optimization for the Greenest Path Problem: A Comprehensive Analysis

Poulad Moradi, Joachim Arts, Josué C. Velázquez-Martínez

We study the effect of using high-resolution elevation data on the selection of the most fuel-efficient(greenest) path for different trucks in various urban environments. We adapt a variant of the Comprehensive Modal Emission Model(CMEM) to show that the optimal speed and the greenest path are slope dependent (dynamic). When there are no elevation changes in a road network, the most fuel-efficient path is the shortest path with a constant (static) optimal speed throughout. However, if the network is not flat, then the shortest path is not necessarily the greenest path, and the optimal driving speed is dynamic. We prove that the greenest path converges to an asymptotic greenest path as the payload approaches infinity and that this limiting path is attained for a finite load.In a set of extensive numerical experiments, we benchmark the CO2emissions reduction of our dynamic speed and the greenest path policies against policies that ignore elevation data.We use the geospatial data of 25major cities across 6continents.We observe numerically that the greenest path quickly diverges from the shortest path and attains the asymptotic greenest path even for moderate payloads.Based on an analysis of variance, the main determinants of the CO2emissions reduction potential are the variation of the road gradients along the shortest path as well as the relative elevation of the source from the target.Using speed data estimates for rush hour in New York City, we test CO2emissions reduction by comparing the greenest paths with optimized speeds against the fastest paths with traffic speed. We observe that selecting the greenest paths instead of the fastest paths can significantly reduce CO2emissions.Additionally,our results show that while speed optimization on uphill arcs can significantly help CO2reduction,the potential to leverage gravity for acceleration on downhill arcs is limited due to traffic congestion.

DeCoR: Defy Knowledge Forgetting by Predicting Earlier Audio Codes

Xilin Jiang, Yinghao Aaron Li, Nima Mesgarani

Lifelong audio feature extraction involves learning new sound classes incrementally, which is essential for adapting to new data distributions over time. However, optimizing the model only on new data can lead to catastrophic forgetting of previously learned tasks, which undermines the model's ability to perform well over the long term. This paper introduces a new approach to continual audio representation learning called DeCoR. Unlike other methods that store previous data, features, or models, DeCoR indirectly distills knowledge from an earlier model to the latest by predicting quantization indices from a delayed codebook. We demonstrate that DeCoR improves acoustic scene classification accuracy and integrates well with continual self-supervised representation learning. Our approach introduces minimal storage and computation overhead, making it a lightweight and efficient solution for continual learning.

Conditional 360-degree Image Synthesis for Immersive Indoor Scene Decoration

Ka Chun Shum, Hong-Wing Pang, Binh-Son Hua et al.

In this paper, we address the problem of conditional scene decoration for 360-degree images. Our method takes a 360-degree background photograph of an indoor scene and generates decorated images of the same scene in the panorama view. To do this, we develop a 360-aware object layout generator that learns latent object vectors in the 360-degree view to enable a variety of furniture arrangements for an input 360-degree background image. We use this object layout to condition a generative adversarial network to synthesize images of an input scene. To further reinforce the generation capability of our model, we develop a simple yet effective scene emptier that removes the generated furniture and produces an emptied scene for our model to learn a cyclic constraint. We train the model on the Structure3D dataset and show that our model can generate diverse decorations with controllable object layout. Our method achieves state-of-the-art performance on the Structure3D dataset and generalizes well to the Zillow indoor scene dataset. Our user study confirms the immersive experiences provided by the realistic image quality and furniture layout in our generation results. Our implementation will be made available.

“In Sparkling Company”: Presenting Eighteenth-Century Britain in Western New York State

Christopher Maxwell

In May 2021, The Corning Museum of Glass, located in Western New York State, opened the exhibition “In Sparkling Company: Glass and the Costs of Social Life in Britain during the 1700s”. Its aim, through a lens of glass, was to introduce visitors to what it meant to be “modern” during the eighteenth century, and the social and economic costs of modernity both for the consumers and producers of luxury during this period. This feature considers the role of gallery design in engaging visitors with displays of often small-scale, colourless glass, while simultaneously supporting the exhibition’s narratives of technical innovation, design, and elite sociability against a backdrop of colonial expansion and exploitation.

Decorated enhanced Teichmüller spaces

Katsuhiro Miguchi

In this paper, we introduce a new variation of the Teichmüller space, namely the deformation space of hyperbolic structures on a surface with both enhancement and decoration. We construct the parameterization of this deformation space, which is a common generalization of the shear coordinates and the $λ$-length coordinates. Furthermore, we introduce the lamination space corresponding to this deformation space, and show the compatibility of the shear coordinates and the $λ$-length coordinates.

L’émergence d’un autre ornement Art nouveau au tournant des années 1910

Aurélien Locatelli

The participation of Henriette Grandjean-Bourquin (1887–1968) in the art nouveau movement of the mountains of Neuchâtel, known as“style sapin” (fir-tree style), was little-known. After having honed her technical skills in Germany and France, Grandjean-Bourquin became interested in pottery and produced a series of eighty-two glazed terracotta pieces at the Liotard de Ferney-Voltaire workshop at the end of 1911. The pieces, very well-documented in the workshop archives, bear witness to a unique production that helped combine the popular arts with new motifs inspired by the stylisation of pine trees, snowflakes and alpine flowers. In her skilful work, which attempted to give an account of the invisible forces that governed nature, it is possible to see the evolution of ornamentation in the 1910s towards a rigorous, geometric style.
