Feedback-Only AI for Writing Instruction: A Constrained-Generative Tool That Preserves Authorship

Heidi Schultz

This study evaluates a “feedback-only,” constrained-generative AI tool designed to support revision without generating or rewriting student text. StoryCoach was developed for a business communication elective and grounded in cognitive apprenticeship with principles of feedback literacy. The tool generated structured feedback: one strength, one opportunity, and one reflective question per submission. Analysis of 57 paired drafts showed significant gains in feature-specific rhetorical execution, with vividness as the primary quantitative indicator (Cohen’s d  = 1.39), supported by independent reader judgments and student reflections. Findings demonstrate that constrained-generative AI can function as a pedagogical partner that strengthens rhetorical awareness and preserves authorship integrity.

The Impact of the Cityhood of Tabuk on Human Development

G. C. Tumbali

The study analysed the impact of Tabuk’s transition to cityhood on various aspects of development, including economic, socio-cultural, political, and environmental dimensions. It sought to understand the demographic profile of respondents, encompassing age, gender, civil status, educational attainment, and employment status. It examined the city government’s demographic profile, including population, land area, income, and internal revenue allocation. The study evaluated the city government’s delivery of services and facilities and assessed the level of impact of Tabuk’s cityhood on economic, social, cultural, political, and environmental development. The research employed percentage analysis for respondents’ demographic profiles, documentary analysis for the city government’s profile, mean to gauge service and facility delivery, and regression to determine the cityhood’s impact on economic, social, cultural, political, and environmental development. Data collection primarily relied on questionnaires. Diverse groups, including business, agriculture, healthcare, education, professionals, transportation sectors, and community groups, participated in the survey. Key findings revealed that a significant proportion of respondents were under 24 years old, with the majority being female, married, and holding at least a bachelor’s degree. A substantial portion of degree holders reported unemployment. The Internal Revenue Allotment of Tabuk City exhibited substantial growth, and local income sustained growth. Population increased, and land area expanded. The study affirmed the city government’s effective provision of services and facilities, fostering socio-economic, political, cultural, and environmental development. Respondents’ demographic profiles, particularly age and employment status, significantly influenced service delivery. Moreover, service and facility delivery significantly predicted the city’s impact, particularly in infrastructure, tourism, low-cost housing, tourism promotion, and support for education, police, and fire services. Based on these findings, recommendations were made, such as crafting comprehensive communication plans, developing public-private partnerships, investing in green initiatives, promoting waste segregation, supporting entrepreneurship, initiating reforestation projects, creating a cemetery office, and establishing a gender and development office to enhance gender equality and inclusion. Keywords: Tabuk cityhood, human development, service delivery, demographic profile, impact assessment

Tech-Enabled Sustainable HR Strategies: Fostering Green Practices

Rachna Bansal Jora, Prabhat Mittal, S. Kaushal et al.

As businesses increasingly recognize the importance of sustainability, the concept of Green HR practices has emerged. Green HR practices aim to integrate environmental concerns into HR policies and procedures, including areas such as recruitment, training, and employee engagement. Technology plays a crucial role in enabling and facilitating these practices, such as using digital tools for recruitment and employee communication, implementing telecommuting and remote work, and reducing paper usage through electronic documentation. Additionally, technology can assist in monitoring and reporting the effectiveness of green HR practices and provide data for future improvements. The combination of Green HR practices and technology can lead to a more sustainable and environmentally responsible organization, benefiting both the company and the planet. Green HRM (Human Resource Management) is closely linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a call for action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all. Green HRM practices can help organizations achieve the SDGs by promoting sustainable workplace practices and reducing their operations' environmental impact.

Online Gaming During the COVID-19 Pandemic in India: Strategies for Work-Life Balance

K. P. Amin, M. Griffiths, Deena Dimple Dsouza

The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has brought the entire world to a relative standstill, affecting millions worldwide at the time of writing (June 24, 2020) (World Health Organization [WHO] 2020). With the absence of an effective vaccine, public health measures have been implemented by governments worldwide, such as quarantine, closing workplaces (including schools and businesses), and spatial distancing (Nussbaumer-Streit et al. 2020). To combat the spread of COVID-19, the Indian government implemented nationwide lockdown measures and self-isolation policies. In the Indian context, “lockdown” refers to individuals staying at home while completely restricting the movement of the population inside and outside of specific areas except for essential activities (health visits, purchasing for essential items, and providing essential work) (Lippi et al. 2020). As a consequence, the measures have led to occupational and educational disruption and psychological distress for many individuals. One area that has been relatively unaffected during the pandemic is the gaming industry, with user engagement growing considerably during this period (Javed 2020). For example, WinZo Games, an Indian-based gaming company, have reported three times more user engagement and 30% higher traffic in online mobile gaming. Around 35% higher usage has been observed in multi-player modes in comparison with single-user modes, a trend also found elsewhere (Bora 2020). Similarly, Paytm First Games, an Indian mobile-based online gaming International Journal of Mental Health and Addiction https://doi.org/10.1007/s11469-020-00358-1

Theoretical insights on integrated reporting

M. Camilleri

Purpose Corporations and large entities are increasingly disclosing material information on their financial and non-financial capitals in integrated reports (IR). The rationale behind their IR is to improve their legitimacy with institutions and stakeholders, as they are expected to communicate on all aspects of their value-creating activities, business models and strategic priorities. In this light, the purpose of this paper is to trace the theoretical underpinnings that have led to the organizations’ environmental, social and governance (ESG) disclosures, and explain the purpose of integrated thinking and reporting. Design/methodology/approach Following a review of relevant theories in business and society literature, this contribution examines the latest developments in corporate communication. This research explores the GRI’s latest Sustainability Reporting Standards as it sheds light on IIRC’s framework. Afterwards, it investigates the costs and benefits of using IR as a vehicle for the corporate disclosures on financial and non-financial performance. Findings This contribution sheds light on the latest developments that have led to the emergence of the organizations’ integrated thinking and reporting as they include financial and non-financial capitals in their annual disclosures. The findings suggest that the investors and the other financial stakeholders remain the key stakeholders of many organizations; it explains that they still represent the primary recipients of the corporate reports. However, the integrated disclosures are also helping practitioners to improve their organizational stewardship and to reinforce their legitimacy with institutions and other stakeholders in society, as they embed ESG information in their IR. Research limitations/implications IIRC’s framework has its inherent limitations that are duly pointed out in this paper. However, despite its weaknesses, this contribution maintains that its guided principles and content elements could support those organizations that may be willing to voluntarily disclose their non-financial performance in their corporate reports. Practical implications This paper has discussed about the inherent limitations of the accounting, reporting and auditing of the organizations’ integrated disclosures. It pointed out that the practitioners may risk focusing their attention on the form of their reports, rather than on the content of their IR. Moreover, this contribution implies that the report preparers (and their stakeholders) would benefit if their IR is scrutinized and assured by independent, externally recognized audit firms. Originality/value This contribution has addressed a gap in academic literature along two lines of investigation. First, it linked key theoretical underpinnings on the agency, stewardship, institutional and legitimacy theories, with the latest developments in corporate communication. Second, it critically evaluated the regulatory instruments, including: GRI’s Sustainability Reporting Standards and the framework, among others; as these institutions are supporting organizations in their integrated thinking and reporting.

Managing in Writing: Recommendations from Textual Patterns in Managers’ Email Communication

Katarzyna Molek-Kozakowska, Dorota Molek-Winiarska

This study draws from personality psychology and linguistics of written communication to explore the characteristics of self-selected well-written email communications (N=273) solicited from Polish managers who organized and supervised the (remote) work of their units during the COVID-19 period. The focus is on the writing of managers with above-average levels of conscientiousness and agreeableness, as these personality factors are predictors of efficacy in the completion of two work-related goals, Achievement and Communion, according to the Theory of Purposeful Work Behavior. The linguistic patterns responsible for effective email communication are identified through both automated and qualitative textual analyses of the email sample. The study has implications for management training via the assumption that linguistic patterns that a reflexive manager uses in writing are subjected to monitoring and can be modeled and adapted to. Specific recommendations for managerial writing styles concern informational, instructional, explanatory, feedback, and query messages.

Barriers and facilitators to the implementation of Health-Promoting School programmes targeting bullying and violence: a systematic review.

Mahan Sadjadi, Laurence Blanchard, Rebecca Brülle et al.

Health-Promoting School (HPS) interventions aim to reduce bullying and violence via curriculum, environmental and family/community-engagement components. Despite evidence of their effectiveness, factors influencing the implementation of such interventions are poorly understood. This systematic review aims to examine such factors by assessing qualitative process evaluations of HPS interventions aiming to reduce bullying, aggression or violence. A comprehensive systematic search of 12 databases was carried out, and 20 reports from 17 studies were included. Thematic synthesis was used to identify factors affecting implementation. Factors that enable implementation were related to programme characteristics and stakeholder buy-in, including support from leadership, teachers, students and parents. Good communication and staff climate were important. Interventions were better implemented when they framed health promotion as a core school business, were supported by a national policy, used local data to show need and effectiveness and provided high-quality, pragmatic and accessible staff training. The results of this review can serve to guide and facilitate the design and implementation of future bullying and violence prevention programmes. Since there is significant overlap in terms of the important pillars and guiding principles for all interventions guided by the HPS framework, the findings may apply to outcomes beyond bullying and violence.

Exploratory Research of ISO 14001:2015 Transition among Portuguese Organizations

L. Fonseca, Jose Pedro Teixeira Domingues

The purpose of this paper is the assessment of the ISO 14001:2015 transition process among Portuguese ISO 14001 certified organizations, including those that successfully have already achieved ISO 14001:2015 certification. A considerable number of the surveyed companies proceeded with the transition to the ISO 14001:2015 by introducing slight adjustments and were supported by external consultants. Nearly all of the respondent companies (97%) intend to transition until 15th September 2018. The highest ranked reported benefit is the “integrated approach with other management sub-systems” with a well-consolidated perception from the surveyed companies. This is aligned with the ISO 14001:2015 goal of improving the compatibility of management standards supported on the Annex SL. “Alignment with business strategy”, “improved top management commitment” and “improved internal and external communication” are also perceived to obtain significant benefits from ISO 14001:2015. The statistical tests carried out (Kruskal–Wallis) confirmed that the perception of some achieved ISO 14001:2015 certification benefits is dependent on the size of the organization. Concerning the motivations to proceed with certification, results suggest that there is not a particular company profile that is compelled to certify their EMS based on a specific type of motivation (Internal or External). Due to ISO 14001:2015 novelty, these exploratory results should be subjected to additional research confirmation.

Every year, companies launch their commitment survey and internal communicators are asked, as a matter of priority, to interview employees, who are confronted with questions of meaning. Starting from the premise that, in the words of a practitioner, “one must commit oneself to engage others”, we explore the nature of this commitment. Can the practitioner exercise his job without strong personal investment? What is the basis for his commitment? How does this commitment influence the way he does his job? To answer these questions, we will seek to clarify the nature of the practitioner’s commitment, his role within the organization and the dynamics of his career path. We will see that, in order to engage others, internal communicators have to explain, to exchange ideas, to enter into a dialogue and even to argue about the work and its organization and the relations between individual employees. The communication dimension of his work thus seems obvious.

INNOVACIONES TECNOLÓGICAS Y SU ROL EN LA EVOLUCIÓN DE LA INDUSTRIA DE FABRICANTES DE DISPOSITIVOS DE TELEFONÍA MÓVIL CELULAR (TMC) EN EL PERÍODO 1997-2016: UN ESTUDIO DE CASO DESDE LA PERSPECTIVA DEL MODELO DE CICLO DE VIDA DE LA INDUSTRIA (ILC)

Federico Manuel Zevallos Peña

This article proposes to work with the Industry Life Cycle (ILC) approach for a better understanding of technological innovations role in industry of manufacturers of mobile cellular telephony devices (TMC devices), as well as in evolution of this sector. Three qualitative strategies of information processing and analysis are used for construction of meaning. This information was organized, systematized and confronted with assumptions of the industry life cycle model (ILC) proposed by Utterback and Abernathy (1975) for the period between 1997 and 2017. The analysis suggests that the behavior of the TMC device industry conforms to the assumptions of the ILC model. It is also worth noting Apple’s iPhone as the dominant design since its appearance (2007) until today (2019). It also shows that, as of the date of this investigation and according to the ILC assumptions, this industry is in transition between the “transitional” and “specific” phases, as well as the importance of technological convergence as a source of innovation in this industry. Some trajectories or possible future directions in the evolution and technological innovations for this industry are also proposed, always from the perspective of the ILC model

Macroprudential aspects of the Banking Union

López Fernández, Urbano

The present document addresses the main macroprudential aspects of the Banking Union, that arose as a reply to the European sovereign debt crisis. After the Great Recession, at international level, a certain consensus was reached regarding the necessity to set out and implement this kind of macroprudential regulation to achieve a robust financial sector. Because of this, from this perspective, each of the fundamental pillars of the Banking Union is analysed, just as its single rulebook, to check if it is in existence and, in this case, if it is sufficient. Equally, some financial indicators are studied to check if regulatory changes are reflected in the data, in the full knowledge that the new mechanism has been in place for a short time. Finally, some ideas and proposals are suggested to improve several macroprudential elements of the Banking Union.

Public health impact of the 2014–2015 Ebola outbreak in West Africa: seizing opportunities for the future

A. Delamou, T. Delvaux, A. E. El Ayadi et al.

The 2014–2015 Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak was unique in geography and extent, with most of the 28 610 cases and 11 308 deaths, including among healthcare workers (HCW), occurring in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.1 Explanations for the rapid spread and persistence of the outbreak include weak health systems (limited qualified HCW, poor infrastructure and logistics, and weak governance and funding for the health sector), sociocultural behaviours misaligned with infection control measures, poverty, political instability, poorly coordinated vertical programmes and significant cross-border population mobility.2 ,3 These realities hindered an effective and immediate response to the outbreak, resulting in the disastrous public health impacts observed in West Africa. Ill-implemented EVD control strategies and insufficient communication with the population led to a suspicion of ‘Ebola business’ that created mistrust in the health systems and their stewards.4 ,5 This resulted in communities' refusal to seek care for EVD-related symptoms and avoidance of health facilities.5 In Sierra Leone, for example, a 30% decreased odds of facility-based delivery were reported in rural areas after the start of the EVD outbreak.6 In Guinea, a rapid decrease in urban maternity admissions in Conakry was observed after the EVD outbreak started.7 The EVD outbreak has also led to the disruption in service use and an accompanying substantial increase in the mortality rates of other diseases such as malaria, HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis across West Africa.8 For example, Plucinski et al 9 reported 11% and 15% …
