Green development efficiency and its determinants in China's agricultural product circulation Industry: An empirical analysis based on panel data from 26 provinces

Yuguo Jiang, Ziyu Zhao, Xinjie Zhao

This paper employs the super-efficiency slack-based measure (SBM) model with undesirable outputs to measure the green development efficiency of the agricultural product circulation industry (APCI) across 26 provinces of China from 2013 to 2022, and applies the kernel density estimation method to reveal its spatio-temporal evolution characteristics. Furthermore, the Tobit model is utilized to analyze the factors influencing the green development efficiency of the APCI. The research reveals that: (1)The green development efficiency of China's APCI is at a medium level. In 2019, a significant spatial demarcation emerged in the green development efficiency of China's agricultural product circulation industry, with the efficiency highland shifting from North/Northeast China to Southern regions, thereby manifesting a new ''high-south, low-north'' efficiency configuration. (2) Interprovincial disparities initially narrowed and subsequently widened. Furthermore, the six major regions exhibited heterogeneous dynamic characteristics, while the green development efficiency of the APCI demonstrated spatial imbalance across provinces. (3) The openness to international market (OIM) exerts a statistically significant positive effect on the green development efficiency of the APCI. Conversely, industrial structure (IS) and agricultural pollution level (API) demonstrate inhibitory effects on APCI's green development efficiency. This study deepens the understanding of APCI's green development efficiency, constructs a systematic measurement framework, expands research perspectives, and provides tools for governments, industries, and enterprises to evaluate efficiency accurately.

Pengaruh Harga Minyak Dunia dan Belanja Infrastruktur terhadap Keseimbangan Anggaran Pemerintah Indonesia 2015-2024

Primasari Fitria, Ayu Geby Gisela Syaputri, Muhammad Bahrul Ulum

This study aims to examine the extent to which World Oil Prices and Infrastructure Spending influence Indonesia's Budget Balance in 2015-2024. The data used in this study are secondary data from 2015-2024. The analysis method used is multiple linear regression analysis. The analysis results indicate that crude oil prices and infrastructure expenditure simultaneously have a significant effect on the Budget Balance, with an F-value of 5.720 and a significance level of 0.013 < 0.015. Partially, infrastructure expenditure has a significant impact on the state budget deficit, with a coefficient of β = 0.456 and p < 0.05, whereas crude oil prices do not have a significant effect (β = -0.106, p = 0.28). This is due to fluctuations in crude oil prices that do not always align with the continuously increasing trend of the state budget deficit each year. Infrastructure expenditure plays a crucial role in supporting economic growth, prompting the government to increase capital spending for development.

Multi-Resolution and Multi-Temporal Satellite Remote Sensing Analysis to Understand Human-Induced Changes in the Landscape for the Protection of Cultural Heritage: The Case Study of the MapDam Project, Syria

Nicodemo Abate, Diego Ronchi, Sara Elettra Zaia et al.

This study presents a multi-resolution and multi-temporal remote sensing approach to assess human-induced changes in cultural landscapes, with a focus on the archaeological site of Amrit (Syria) within the MapDam project. By integrating satellite archives (KH, Landsat series, NASADEM) with ancillary geospatial data (OpenStreetMap) and advanced analytical methods, four decades (1984–2024) of land-use/land-cover (LULC) change and shoreline dynamics were reconstructed. Machine learning classification (Random Forest) achieved high accuracy (Test Accuracy = 0.94; Kappa = 0.89), enabling robust LULC mapping, while predictive modelling of urban expansion, calibrated through a Gradient Boosting Machine, attained a Figure of Merit of 0.157, confirming strong predictive reliability. The results reveal path-dependent urban growth concentrated on low-slope terrains (≤5°) and consistent with proximity to infrastructure, alongside significant shoreline regression after 1974. A Business-as-Usual projection for 2024–2034 estimates 8.676 ha of new anthropisation, predominantly along accessible plains and peri-urban fringes. Beyond quantitative outcomes, this study demonstrates the replicability and scalability of open-source, data-driven workflows using Google Earth Engine and Python 3.14, making them applicable to other high-risk heritage contexts. This transparent methodology is particularly critical in conflict zones or in regions where cultural assets are neglected due to economic constraints, political agendas, or governance limitations, offering a powerful tool to document and safeguard endangered archaeological landscapes.

Aylin Bayındır-Gümüş, Ebru Öztürk, Mihály Soós

Background. People live in a technological world, where social media is used very commonly. Social media has effects on eating behaviors, as in other aspects. For this reason, it is important to measure social media effect. Objective. This study aimed to adapt the Scale of Effects of Social Media on Eating Behaviour (SESMEB) that examines the effect of social media on eating behavior in Hungarian university students. Material and methods. The SESMEB was translated into the target language by taking various stages. The online questionnaire including general information, social media use, and the eighteen-item SESMEB was used to collect data. The scale was administered to the study group consisting of 213 Hungarian university students, and data from 203 of them were analyzed. Confirmatory factor analyses were performed to test construct validity, and the Cronbach alpha coefficient was calculated for the reliability of the scale in Hungarian. Results. Total correlation value was higher than 0.50 for all items of the scale. The fit indices were at an acceptable level or had a perfect fit. The t-values were significant at the level of 0.1 and ranged between 2.927 and 5.706. The Spearman–Brown coefficient was calculated at 0.894. The reliability coefficient of the scale was calculated to be 0.866. SESMEB scores were different according to spending time daily, sharing content, and using filters or Photoshop on social media (p < 0.05). Conclusions. Higher than 0.80 Cronbach’s alpha coefficient and other results show that Hungarian SESMEB is a valid and reliable tool. Therefore, Hungarian SESMEB will be useful for further studies to determine the impact of social media on eating behaviors.

Partners in crime: Convenience case study of Norwegian publishing cartel

Petter Gottschalk

The theory of convenience addresses white-collar and corporate crime. The theory is applied in this article to a case study of Norwegian publishing houses having to pay infringement fees because of competition act violation. Cartel members agreed and coordinated a boycott of a distribution channel. This article reviews the research literature on cartels before presenting the convenience case study. Combatting cartels is a matter of reducing the attractiveness and convenience of joining cartels. Guardianship, oversight, and controls are at the core of reducing deviance convenience. Detection is an element of oversight. However, detection is rare, as this case illustrated by email sent by mistake. Combatting cartels is a matter of control at the top of organizations where typically each chief executive officer (CEO) is involved. Therefore, the corporate compliance officer should never report to the CEO but rather to the chairperson on the board and to the external auditor.

Technology-Supported Behavior Change—Applying Design Thinking to mHealth Application Development

Ramona Schweitzer, Stephan Schlögl, Marco Schweitzer

Non-communicable diseases are the leading cause of global deaths. The risk of their development and progression is increased by modifiable behavioral risk factors. Yet, despite the known benefits of primary and secondary prevention, people often do not follow recommendations for a healthier lifestyle. To this end, mobile health (mHealth) applications offer features for behavioral interventions. Yet, reported user engagement is often low. The objective of the work presented in this article is thus to evaluate the suitability of Design Thinking (DT) as a means to inform the development of an mHealth application that helps increase long-term engagement, and consequently supports individuals in sustainably changing their lifestyle. Applying the DT approach, key user needs and challenges were investigated and used to design a first low-fidelity mHealth application prototype. Think-Aloud analysis, task completion, and post-test interviews were then used to evaluate the prototype and generate early-stage insights. Subsequently, a structured, retrospective analysis of this process, evaluating the insight-generation potential of each step in the DT process cycle, was used to reflect on its suitability to inform mHealth application development. The respective results highlight (1) the distinct value of the DT method, particularly in the early stages of a development project; (2) the strong need for interdisciplinary collaboration in such projects, so as to capture realistic end-user requirements and improve the overall effectiveness of the application design; and (3) the significance of integrating behavioral change theories into the design of mHealth applications, in order to promote long-term engagement.

Hungary in the European Union – Cooperation, Peacock Dance and Autocracy

Éltető Andrea, Szemlér Tamás

Hungary had been one of the frontrunners in the political and economic transition process in Central and Eastern Europe in the 1990s, and in 2004 it joined the European Union. Since 2010, Hungary has gradually become an autocratic regime, a process that has been facilitated by the political benefits of EU integration and money transfers. While the support of the Hungarian people for EU membership has remained high, tensions have increased between the Hungarian government and EU institutions. This article evaluates how the external shock of Russia’s war against Ukraine has shaken Hungary’s so far developed authoritarian equilibrium within the EU. The authors show how embedded the Hungarian autocracy has become and argue that although there have been some effects to the pillars of the authoritarian equilibrium, it has remained stable, and most probably will continue to do so, as long as the illiberal regime stays in power.

A new extension of linear failure rate distribution with estimation, simulation, and applications

Najwan Alsadat, Mohammed Elgarhy, Amal S. Hassan et al.

In this article, we provide a new three-parameter model derived from the newly reduced Cauchy power-G family and linked to the linear failure rate model. The truncated Cauchy power linear failure rate (TCPLFR) is the name given to this distribution. The TCPLFR distribution also contains the truncated Cauchy power Rayleigh distribution and the truncated Cauchy power exponential distribution as sub-models. The TCPLFR distribution has rising, falling, and U-shaped hazard rate functions. The distribution characteristics of the TCPLFR are presented. To compute the population parameters’ point and estimated confidence intervals, the maximum likelihood approach is employed. We explore the behavior of the maximum likelihood estimates as well as the estimated confidence intervals for the model parameters using Monte Carlo simulation. To demonstrate the significance and flexibility of the TCPLFR distribution, the Akaike information criterion (D1), Bayesian information criterion (D2), consistent Akaike information criterion (D3), Hannan–Quinn information criterion (D4), and Kolmogorov–Smirnov (D5) statistic with its p-value (D6) were employed. According to a real-world data analysis, the truncated Cauchy power linear failure rate distribution outperforms alternative models with two, three, and four parameters.

Marketing Resource Allocation Strategy Optimization Based on Dynamic Game Model

Yan Long, Hongshan Zhao

Game theory has become an important tool to study the competition between oligopolistic enterprises. After combing the existing literature, it is found that there is no research combining two-stage game and nonlinear dynamics to analyze the competition between enterprises for advertising. Therefore, this paper establishes a two-stage game model to discuss the effect of the degree of firms’ advertising input on their profits. And the complexity of the system is analyzed using nonlinear dynamics. This paper analyzes and studies the dynamic game for two types of application network models: data transmission model and transportation network model. Under the time-gap ALOHA protocol, the noncooperative behavior of the insiders in the dynamic data transmission stochastic game is examined as well as the cooperative behavior. In this paper, the existence of Nash equilibrium and its solution algorithm are proved in the noncooperative case, and the “subgame consistency” of the cooperative solution (Shapley value) is discussed in the cooperative case, and the cooperative solution satisfying the subgame consistency is obtained by constructing the “allocation compensation procedure.” The cooperative solution is obtained by constructing the “allocation compensation procedure” to satisfy the subgame consistency. In this paper, we propose to classify the packets transmitted by the source nodes, and by changing the strategy of the source nodes at the states with different kinds of packets, we find that the equilibrium payment of the insider increases in the noncooperative game with the addition of the “wait” strategy. In the transportation dynamic network model, the problem of passenger flow distribution and the selection of service parameters of transportation companies are also studied, and a two-stage game theoretical model is proposed to solve the equilibrium price and optimal parameters under Wardrop’s criterion.

The difference between successful REs (S-REs) and unsuccessful REs (US-REs) is still unknown. This is the first study to compare the fMRI reactivity among US-REs, S-REs and unrestrained eaters (UREs) in a food-related Go/NoGo paradigm. Methods: Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to examine the neural responses corresponding to the success of dieting in REs. Eighteen S-REs, 17 US-REs and 17 UREs were asked to perform a Go/No-Go task after being shown pictures of either high-caloric or low-caloric food. Results: fMRI results revealed stronger activations for high-caloric food in areas associated with executive function and inhibition (i.e., middle frontal gyrus and cerebellum) among S-REs than among US-REs. In contrast, both US-REs and UREs showed stronger activations for low-caloric food in reward areas (i.e., orbitofrontal cortex (OFC)) than S-REs.Conclusion: Our results provide evidence that food temptations may trigger processes of successful inhibition control in S-REs, whereas US-REs may fail in resisting the attraction to high-caloric food, thereby showing a high probability of overeating. Keywords: successful and unsuccessful restrained eaters, measurement of restrained eating, inhibition control, fMRI

Future Protein Supply and Demand: Strategies and Factors Influencing a Sustainable Equilibrium

Maeve Henchion, Maria Hayes, Anne Maria Mullen et al.

A growing global population, combined with factors such as changing socio-demographics, will place increased pressure on the world’s resources to provide not only more but also different types of food. Increased demand for animal-based protein in particular is expected to have a negative environmental impact, generating greenhouse gas emissions, requiring more water and more land. Addressing this “perfect storm” will necessitate more sustainable production of existing sources of protein as well as alternative sources for direct human consumption. This paper outlines some potential demand scenarios and provides an overview of selected existing and novel protein sources in terms of their potential to sustainably deliver protein for the future, considering drivers and challenges relating to nutritional, environmental, and technological and market/consumer domains. It concludes that different factors influence the potential of existing and novel sources. Existing protein sources are primarily hindered by their negative environmental impacts with some concerns around health. However, they offer social and economic benefits, and have a high level of consumer acceptance. Furthermore, recent research emphasizes the role of livestock as part of the solution to greenhouse gas emissions, and indicates that animal-based protein has an important role as part of a sustainable diet and as a contributor to food security. Novel proteins require the development of new value chains, and attention to issues such as production costs, food safety, scalability and consumer acceptance. Furthermore, positive environmental impacts cannot be assumed with novel protein sources and care must be taken to ensure that comparisons between novel and existing protein sources are valid. Greater alignment of political forces, and the involvement of wider stakeholders in a governance role, as well as development/commercialization role, is required to address both sources of protein and ensure food security.

Examining the effect of retail service quality dimensions on customer satisfaction and loyalty: The case of the supermarket shopper

J. Beneke, C. Hayworth, R. Hobson et al.

Purpose: Post Apartheid, the South African supermarket industry has rapidly increased in size and stature, yet customer satisfaction and fostering goodwill don't appear to have kept pace with growth. This research considers which aspects of retail service quality impact upon customer satisfaction and, ultimately, pay dividends in terms of generating store loyalty amongst urban shoppers in the middle to upper market segments. Design/methodology/approach: A survey approach was used to collect data from 307 respondents within a major metro pole area, as well as through an online interface. This was used to test our path model using Partial Least Squares (PLS) analysis. Findings: The results from the analysis concluded that two constructs, namely Physical Aspects and Personal Interaction, had a direct relationship with Customer Satisfaction. Customer satisfaction was also confirmed to be positively linked to customer loyalty. Originality/Value: This research uncovers which aspects of service are most coveted by consumers in an emerging market context, as well as their effect on generating repeat business. If supermarket chains are to move beyond mere profit generation and build meaningful relationships with customers, they would best be advised to focus on the attributes of service that have a direct bearing on customer satisfaction and, in turn, long-term repeat patronage.

ENHANCING LEAN SUPPLY CHAIN MATURITY WITH BUSINESS PROCESS MANAGEMENT

Jurij Jaklic, Peter Trkman, Ales Groznik et al.

In today’s global market the main focus of competition is not only between different companies but also between supply chains. Technological changes and organizational improvements are important for effective supply chain management (SCM), however, the main cause of SCM improvements is not the implementation of an information system (IS) itself, but rather a change and an integration of business processes. The paper summarizes the most important concepts of SCM and specifically concentrates on the importance of business process management (BPM) in supply chains, because full advantages can be realized when business processes in the supply chain are well defined, integrated and managed. The main purpose of this paper is to show that successful SCM calls for the maturity of supply chain processes in all involved companies and at the supply chain level, which can be realized by using effective BPM methods. A necessary condition for growing of SCM in terms of supply chain process maturity levels is an inter-organizational information system development and process renovation. Yet, BPM should not be considered as a one-time project of IS implementation and process change, but as a permanent process performance measurement, analysis and continuous improvement of the supply chain processes. The concepts are illustrated with a case study of fuel supply process.
