Bibliographic Information Resources in the Network Space of a Children’s Library: A Case Study of the RDGB

Elena V. Gubina

The 4th International Bibliographical Congress (September 16—19, 2025) paid considerable attention to children’s bibliography, as the foundation for fostering a love of books and reading, nurturing future readers, and helping them navigate the vast information flow. As the national leader in this field, the Russian State Children’s Library (RDGB) provides the essential bibliographic framework used by libraries nationwide. This article analyzes the RDGB’s diverse bibliographic resources, covering both the recommended reading lists and scholarly support materials available via its website and social media. The article demonstrates the diversity of the content and subject matter of these resources, their intended audience, and the variety of information delivery formats. It highlights the significance of the RDGB’s bibliographic resources in engaging children and adolescents with reading, as well as in providing methodological support to children’s libraries across the country and all those responsible for children’s reading.

In Defense of Imperfection

Desmond Wong, Mikayla Redden

The demand for perfect solutions to complex institutional problems creates excessive, ever-changing barriers for racialized peoples working toward transformative justice. The same demand is not made of the methods used to adopt the emerging technologies which appeal to the libraries desire to appear in perpetual growth. This paper employed autoethnographic analysis and Storywork to understand and make meaning from our lived experiences as racialized librarians in relation to the sociopolitical spaces in which we work. These methodologies allowed us to expose complexities and vulnerabilities in our experiences with community-led work to return sacred Knowledge and offered us a means to critique the systems in which we operate and call upon our colleagues to embrace solutions that are gradual, decentralized, and imperfect. In this article, we make a series of calls to our colleagues as a means of engaging their thinking on unchecked assumptions that create greater barriers, more labour and burnout racialized colleagues. These calls create an ethic in place of best practices that challenge our profession to be responsive to local issues in relational ways. We offer this defense of imperfection as a means of bringing attention to the labour of social justice work within our profession and to ask all of our colleagues to embrace and make imperfect solutions possible.

The Qudit Cirq Library: An Extension of Google's Cirq Library for Qudits

Svyatoslav Kushnarev, Hassan Jameel Asghar

This document contains a guide on how to use the Qudit Cirq library, an extension of Google's Cirq library for qudits. While Cirq provides necessary building blocks for quantum computation on qudits, the gates, curcuits and simulation of qudit systems need to be developed from scratch. Our extension to the Cirq library has built-in methods for creating qudits, applying common qudit gates, building circuits and simulating quantum computation on these circuits. This is ideal for researchers who want to use an off-the-shelf library to simulate qudit systems.

Polish research on publishing in Poland between 1945 and 2015: Themes, legacy and implications for further research

Maria Juda

The history of publishing in Poland encompasses many issues associated with the emergence and dissemination of printed books. Of fundamental significance to the study of these issues are the records of the publishing output: while we have nearly complete, though still underexamined, records of this output for the period from the 15th to the 18th century, documented in bibliographies and catalogues, the situation is worse when it comes to the 19th and 20th centuries, until the outbreak of the Second World War. In this respect, what we need is not only a continuation, but a radical intensification of bibliographic work. This concerns works published in the Latin, Cyrillic, Hebrew and Greek scripts, as well as musical notation. Polish book scholars have devoted a lot of attention to the beginnings of printing in Poland. The historiography concerning various typographic workshops located in the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth is rich; however, it still requires further extensive studies. Scholars have also been interested in phenomena influ- encing the content structure of printed publications, such as publishing privileges (in the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth), censorship and restrictions imposed by the partitioning powers and later by Poland’s communist authorities, as a result of which Polish publications had to be printed abroad and an independent publishing movement emerged. The scholars’ research interests have also focused on books as products of printers and publishers and on the publication of written works. Scholars have examined both the various components of the book (title page, printer’s signet, stemmata, etc.) and its editorial composition as a whole. Their undoubted achievements in the studies of the history of publishing in Poland are significant, yet in many areas they need to be continued and expanded (one important task is the edition of sources for the study of the history of Polish publishing) and to investigate the phenomena that stem from developmental tendencies in modern book studies.

Situating complexity: information behaviour in the contact zone

Hye Lim Joy Nam

Introduction.  This short paper addresses the problematic un-situated nature of the holistic framework proposed by Polkinghorne and Given. In 2021, Polkinghorne and Given called for a substantive shift in the information field to a holistic research paradigm. However, framing studies in a contextualised, complex manner has remained an enduring challenge, particularly regarding where information experiences occur. Method.  The author identifies a spatial gap in the holistic framework, traces existing literature on place/space in the information field, and explores M. L. Pratt’s contact zone theory. Analysis and results. The holistic paradigm holds an obfuscated view of place/space and its role in shaping information behaviour. Existing studies and theories that incorporate place/space and its impact on information practices underscore the importance of the spatial. The paper looks to contact zone theory as a useful tool for conceptualising information behaviour in particular sites. Conclusion. This paper argues that contact and zone are both key aspects of information behaviour, as information encounters take place in specific sites, between diverse human and nonhuman agents with different levels of power and influence. The contact zone is suggested as a critical lens to examine spatially bound interactions that could offer a more anchored, multi-agentic vision for researching information behaviour.

Access to Library Information Resources by University Students during COVID-19 Pandemic in Africa: A Systematic Literature Review

Joyce Charles Shikali, Paul Samwel Muneja

The study examined access to library information resources by university students during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The study investigated measures that were adopted by academic libraries for smooth delivery of library information resources to their patrons. It also identified technological tools that were employed by libraries to facilitate access to library information resources. We also investigated the challenges faced by students in accessing library information resources. A systematic literature review approach using PRISMA guidelines was employed to investigate the relevant literature on the subject. The keyword search strategy was employed to search for relevant literature from four scholarly databases Scopus, emerald, Research4life, and Google Scholar. In this study, 23 studies that fulfilled the criteria were included. The findings revealed that the majority of the reviewed studies indicate that, during the COVID-19 pandemic many academic libraries in Africa adopted different approaches to facilitate access to library information resources by university students including expanding access to electronic resources off-campus, virtual reference services, circulation and lending services. To support access to different library services and information resources academic libraries in Africa used various digital technological tools like social media, library websites, email and video conferencing. Moreover, the study revealed that limited access to internet services and ICT devices, inadequate electronic library collection and inadequate digital and information literacy were the major challenges faced by patrons during the pandemic. This study recommends investment in ICT infrastructures and expanding electronic resource collections which are vital resources in the digital era.

Enhancing Modern Supervised Word Sense Disambiguation Models by Semantic Lexical Resources

Stefano Melacci, Achille Globo, Leonardo Rigutini

Supervised models for Word Sense Disambiguation (WSD) currently yield to state-of-the-art results in the most popular benchmarks. Despite the recent introduction of Word Embeddings and Recurrent Neural Networks to design powerful context-related features, the interest in improving WSD models using Semantic Lexical Resources (SLRs) is mostly restricted to knowledge-based approaches. In this paper, we enhance "modern" supervised WSD models exploiting two popular SLRs: WordNet and WordNet Domains. We propose an effective way to introduce semantic features into the classifiers, and we consider using the SLR structure to augment the training data. We study the effect of different types of semantic features, investigating their interaction with local contexts encoded by means of mixtures of Word Embeddings or Recurrent Neural Networks, and we extend the proposed model into a novel multi-layer architecture for WSD. A detailed experimental comparison in the recent Unified Evaluation Framework (Raganato et al., 2017) shows that the proposed approach leads to supervised models that compare favourably with the state-of-the art.

Review of Deep Learning for Language Modeling

WANG Sili, ZHANG Ling, YANG Heng, LIU Wei

[Purpose/Significance] Deep learning for language modeling is one of the major methods and advanced technologies to enhance language intelligence of machines at present, which has become an indispensable important technical means for automatic processing and analysis of data resources, and intelligent mining of information and knowledge. However, there are still some difficulties in using deep learning for language modeling for technology development and application service in the library and information science (LIS) field. Therefore, this study systematically reviews and reveals the research progress, technical principles, and development methods of deep learning for language modeling, with the aim at providing reliable theoretical basis and feasible methodological paths for the deep understanding and application of deep learning for language modeling for librarians and fellow practitioners. [Method/Process] The data used in this study were collected from the WOS core database, CNKI literature database, arXiv preprint repository, GitHub open-source software hosting platform and the open resources on the Internet. Based on these data, this paper first systematically investigates the background, basic feature representation algorithms, and representative application development tools of deep learning for language modeling, reveals their dynamic evolution and technical principles, and analyzes the advantages and disadvantages and applicability of each algorithm model and development tool. Second, an in-depth analysis of the possible challenging problems faced by the development and application of deep learning for language modeling was performed, and two strategic approaches to expand their application capabilities were put forward. [Results/Conclusions] The important challenges faced by the application and development of deep learning for language modeling include numerous parameters and difficulties to adjust accuracy, relying on a large amount of accurate training data, difficulties in making changes, and the intellectual property and information security issues. In the future, we will start from two aspects of specific domains and feature engineering to expand and improve the application capabilities of deep learning for language modeling. Specifically, we focus on consideration of the collection and preparation of domain data, selection of model architecture, participation of domain experts, and optimization for specific tasks, in order to ensure that the data source of the model is more reliable and secure, and the application effect is more accurate and practical. Moreover, the strategic methods for feature engineering to expand the application capabilities of deep learning for language modeling include selecting appropriate features, feature pre-processing, feature selection, and feature dimensionality reduction. These strategies can help improve the performance and efficiency of deep learning for language models, making them more suitable for specific tasks or domains. To sum up, LIS institutions should leverage the deep learning for language modeling related technologies, guided by the needs of scientific research and social development, and based on advantages of existing literature data resources and knowledge services; they should carry out innovative professional or vertical domain intelligent knowledge management and application service, and develop technology and systems with independent intellectual property rights, which is their long-term sustainable development path.

Semidefinite Programming in Quantum Information Science

Paul Skrzypczyk, Daniel Cavalcanti

Semidefinite programs (SDPs) are a class of optimisation problems that find application in numerous areas of physics, engineering and mathematics. Semidefinite programming is particularly suited to problems in quantum physics and quantum information science. Following a review of the theory of semidefinite programming, the book proceeds to describe how it can be used to address a wide range of important problems from across quantum information science. Specific applications include quantum state, measurement, and channel estimation and discrimination, entanglement detection and quantification, quantum distance measures, and measurement incompatibility. Though SDPs have become an increasingly important tool in quantum information science it's not yet the kind of mathematics students learn routinely. Assuming only a basic knowledge of linear algebra and quantum physics and quantum information, this graduate-level book provides a unified and accessible presentation of one of the key numerical methods used in quantum information science.

XIX a. antros pusės Rusijos slavofilų ir dešiniųjų narodnikų liaudiškumo mitologemos XXI a. pradžios Rusijos putiniškojo režimo propagandoje

Kęstutis Šapoka

Rusijos karas prieš Ukrainą suaktualina putiniškojo režimo propagandos „argumentų“, neva pagrindžiančių agresiją prieš suverenią valstybę, istorinės logikos ir socioideologinės semantikos tyrimus. Straipsnyje lyginamos XIX a. Rusijos inteligentų ‒ slavofilų ir dešiniųjų narodnikų (liaudininkų) bei XXI a. 1–3 dešimtmečių putiniškojo režimo propagandoje eksploatuojamos liaudiškumo sampratos, veikiančios kaip mitologemų ir ideologemų rinkinys. Keliamas slavofilų ir dešiniųjų narodnikų ideologijos istorinio ir politinio perimamumo klausimas putiniškojo režimo propagandoje, vykdomoje įvairiuose karo Ukrainoje kontekstuose. Tyrime išryškinama dviprasmybė ‒ viena vertus, nekorektiška tiesiogiai kildinti XXI a. pradžios Rusijos politinio režimo postulatų iš XIX a. Rusijos konservatyvios politinės minties (slavofilų) ir XIX a. antros pusės narodnikų ideologijos. Antra vertus, XIX a. slavofilų ir šio amžiaus antros pusės dešiniųjų narodnikų suformuluotų liaudiškumo sampratų rudimentai tebėra aktyvūs nūdienos Rusijos kultūrinėje atmintyje, kaip politinio populizmo elementai jie naudojami putiniškojo režimo propagandoje. Tad XIX a. Rusijos slavofilų ir šio amžiaus antros pusės dešiniųjų narodnikų idėjų dalinis perimamumas traktuotinas ne kaip istorinis tęstinumas tiesiogine šio žodžio reikšme, o labiau kaip politinio populizmo naudojamas vienas situacinio „tradicionalizmo“ elementų.

User Manual of Automatic Data Curation Tool(ADCT): A bulk data curator software in Library and Information Science

A. Banerjee, B. Sutradhar

In library and information science, document storage and user-specific document retrieval are the main aspects of digital library services. To preserve the cultural heritage, documents, and literature, we need a common platform where all types of documents are available in a specific format. Our proposed software tool, ADCT can handle a bulk amount of data and transforms different types of raw data into specified metadata information. It generalizes multiple forms of curation logic applied to the source data. As state of the art, many research activities is done in various university to manage their research data in digital library services. The author provides descriptive statistics of library and information service (LIS) activities for information storage and retrieval. The paper shows research on methodology, information gathering, and scientific communication done on library data as an activity of the LIS community. The analysis of LIS data and the change of interest in information storage and retrieval from classification and indexing to retrieval are much important. For Building these types of digitized educational services, automatic data curation is an important stepping stone. The paper shows that automation can complement expertise and knowledge. The author builds an automated data transformation and curation tool that assists users in the analysis of metadata information and effort towards conforming to generic standards using a catalog when a librarian wants to see the adjacent related metadata for an archival collection of congressional correspondence.

Library and Information Science Research in Indian Universities: Growth, Core Journals, Keywords and Collaboration Patterns

Swapan Kumar Patra

This article maps Library and Information Science (LIS) research in Indian universities. As the two prominent citation databases, Web of Science and Scopus have very limited coverage of Indian LIS journals, the publications generated by the library and science departments of about 114 selected Indian universities and the two national institutions of importance in LIS research were extracted from Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts (LISTA). The relevant publication records were analyzed using scientometrics and Social Network Analysis (SNA) tools. The study traces the growth of publications, prominent keywords, leading journals where the articles are published and the institutional collaboration patterns of Indian university publications. The results show that there is a growth in scholarly publications from Indian universities in LIS. However, the numbers of publications are limited to only a few universities and national institutes of importance. The maximum LIS research outputs are published in Indian journals. Bibliometrics related investigations are the most important research areas. Located in major cities of India, the productive institutes show healthy collaboration. The study concludes with some observations which may be useful for formulating policies in LIS research in India.
