Generative AI

Stefan Feuerriegel, Jochen Hartmann, Christian Janiesch et al.

Recent advancements in generative artificial intelligence (AI) have made it possible for machines to independently produce a variety of creative content. In the context of producing creative content, this essay examines the developments, difficulties, and ethical issues relating to generative AI. It looks into how generative models, such Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) and Variational Auto encoders (VAEs), can produce realistic artwork like music, literature, and visuals. However, it is frequently discovered that GAN training is extremely unstable and frequently experiences non-convergence, mode collapse, and hyperparameter sensitivity [1]. The technical details of developing and optimizing generative models to produce desired results are covered in detail in this work. It also looks at the difficulties in guaranteeing the variety, creativity, and coherence of generated content. Additionally, the use of generative AI in the creation of original material raises ethical questions. Included in this are concerns about intellectual property, plagiarism, and possible effects on the creative industries. In specifically, the article explores the consequences of employing generative AI for content production in terms of authorship, human creativity, and the possible disruption of traditional creative practices. It also covers issues with fairness, bias, and appropriate application of generative models.

Form and Work in Music

Ildar Khannanov

The two major categories, musical form and musical work have been in the center of attention for generations of theorists. Their relationship has been rather dramatic, as seen in the cases that took place in German, Russian and North American traditions. It is not, however, for the minute interest or for the satisfaction of the appetite for sensation that a historian of music theory may be interested in contemplation on this issue. The comparison of form to work does not generate a binary opposition. Rather, it is a natural phenomenon: things happen this way and the two schools of theorists emerged and kept maintaining strong beliefs in either form or work. With the necessary references to philosophy, to the questions of ontology and epistemology of these fundamental categories, the author presents the history of debates of formalists and integralists in both dimensions of research and pedagogy. In the end of the article, the author attempts to summarize this antinomy and to find a possible common ground for its evaluation within a single frame of thought.

Mass gathering healthcare and safety: current knowledge and future directions

Marc-Antoine Pigeon, Marc-Antoine Pigeon, Anne-Julie Demers et al.

IntroductionMass gathering medicine (MGM) has been a rapidly evolving area of expertise for many years, with pearls and pitfalls emerging from recent literature. Gaps have been identified: lack of a pragmatic definition of MGM, weaknesses in data sets used to report on major events, difficulties with developing tools to help organizers assess health and safety issues. This study aims to map and describe the current body of literature on mass gatherings in order to identify strengths and weaknesses in the healthcare response, guiding future research in the field.MethodsThis study is a bibliometric review. Using the broad research terms “mass gatherings” and “major planned events”, Pubmed, Web of Science and Google Scholar were searched for publications up to Sept. 13, 2024. No restrictions of language or type of articles were used. All gray literature was included. After removal of duplicates, two independent reviewers confirmed relevance, and articles were organized according to date of publication, type of event (7), main subjects categories (11). Further keywords analyses have been conducted using VOSViewer (v.1.6.20).ResultsInitial database searches yielded 4,526 results. After the removal of duplicates and non-related articles, 898 publications remained and have been categorized, dating from 1978 to 2024. Full text analysis was possible for a total of 854 articles. More than 25% of the articles concerned religious events, while categories like infectious diseases and public health were the main subject of more than one third of the papers. Music events, spontaneous gatherings and environmental/remote events were underrepresented. Main topics like heat-related illnesses and environmental health, training and psychosocial aspects were also underrepresented. Keywords analysis allowed for the identification of areas of scarce knowledge that need further development.ConclusionMass gathering health and safety literature has grown rapidly over the past years. This study identified areas of strong knowledge to build upon, while more scarce areas like psychosocial aspects, quality evaluation, management and supervision, training and development of formal expertise are still in need of improvement.

Questioning streets. On plural origins, plural uses, and plural futures

Kim Carlotta von Schönfeld

Streets occupy a vast amount of the space most people inhabit daily, and yet they often go unnoticed as an explicit object. This article goes into some depth on what streets have been, are, and could be, based on a historical and literature review, three expert interviews, as well as a search through songs and the music scene, and literary quotes. It also includes a linguistic reflection on the term. Based on these various sources, the article then offers a set of seven themes around which streets can be understood, including one about “the as-yet unimagined” and a set of questions that can help guide investigations based on each of these themes. The article thus broadens the view of the multiple roles that streets could have in the future, in terms of mobility and transportation, but also far beyond these aspects. Finally, it makes a larger conceptual provocation: how might plurality be embraced without sacrificing clarity, thus empowering the varied realities of people, and their requirements and wishes, to materialize in their daily lives − without losing touch with questions of sustainability and justice?

Vivify—Emotion Recognition and Music Recommendation Using Transformers

Bettina Shirley Richard, Bhuvana Jayaraman, Ratnavel Rajalakshmi et al.

Music and literature are powerful mediums capable of evoking a wide range of emotions. This research combines these two forms of art to provide an immersive reading experience by exploring the use of music to enhance the emotional impact of a book. The primary aim is to help the reader to develop a deeper emotional connection between the reader and the text. A novel framework, Vivify is proposed that uses RoBERTa for text emotion recognition and LSTM for music emotion recognition. Vivify system analyses the emotional tone of the text and recommends congruent background music using Cosine similarity. Unlike existing emotion-based recommender systems which rely on categorical emotions or language-dependent features, Vivify introduces a continuous valence–arousal alignment between textual and musical modalities, ensuring language-independent and fine-grained emotional congruence. A user satisfaction survey with 63 participants was conducted on three criteria namely, satisfaction, engagement and congruence of the recommended music to evaluate the holistic performance of the proposed system. The proposed Vivify has achieved a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 0.1275 for text and 0.3110 for music. The results show that the Vivify system enhances personalization and engagement of the reading activity which can be effectively used in education and entertainment. The proposed system is language-independent and focuses only on background music rather than on lyrics and thereby ensuring the suitability across linguistic contexts. This approach facilitates a personalized and immersive reading experience with reader engagement and emotional connection.

Beyond the spotlight: Unveiling the gender bias curtain in movie reviews.

Jad Doughman, Wael Khreich

Historically, the film industry has been male-dominated both in front of and behind the camera, resulting in a longstanding gender imbalance in storytelling and representation. This legacy of male-centric narratives may unconsciously influence critics' expectations and judgments. Existing literature suggests that negative critiques in movie reviews can significantly impact actors' earnings by diminishing a film's commercial prospects. This influence extends to potential reductions in back-end compensation and marketability for future projects, and it can directly affect actors' well-being, leading to increased stress levels and elevated cardiovascular reactivity. Previously, gender biases in movie reviews were computed using disparities in male-led versus female-led movie ratings or box-office earnings; however, no work has been done to quantify the linguistic biases within movie review transcripts. This work aims to leverage our language-model-powered gender bias detection system to measure benevolent sexism, hostile sexism, explicit marking of sex, dehumanization, and generic pronouns in reviews published by professional critics. Therefore, we analyzed 17,165 professionally written reviews, comprising a total of 735,000 sentences. Our analysis uncovers pronounced representation bias in key movie roles, with 72% of first actors, 91% of first directors, and 86% of first writers being male. More importantly, the findings indicate that movies with female-dominated casts evoke, on average, 149% higher magnitude of hostile sexism and 44% higher magnitude of benevolent sexism in their reviews compared to movies with male-dominated casts. We also find that benevolent sexism is most common in Family and Music genres, reflecting the romanticization of gender roles, whereas hostile sexism peaks in Romance. A non-parametric statistical analysis revealed significant gender differences in benevolent and hostile sexism scores for movie reviews, with female first actors, directors, and writers receiving higher levels of both benevolent and hostile sexist criticism compared to their male counterparts.

Adolf Chybiński a Norwegia

Dagmara Łopatowska-Romsvik

Następnie kilkukrotnie powracał do zagadnień norweskich.

Automated Surface Runoff Estimation with the Spectral Unmixing of Remotely Sensed Multispectral Imagery

Chloe Campo, Paolo Tamagnone, Guy Schumann

This work presents a methodology for the hydrological characterization of natural and urban landscapes, focusing on accurate estimations of infiltration capacity and runoff characteristics. By combining existing methods from the literature, we created a systemic process that integrates satellite-based vegetation maps, topography, and soil permeability data. This process generates a detailed vegetation classification and slope-corrected composite curve number (CNcα) map using information at the subpixel level, which is crucial for estimating excess runoff during intense precipitation events. The algorithm designed with this methodology is automated and utilizes freely accessible multispectral imagery. Leveraging the vegetation–impervious–soil (V-I-S) model, it is assumed that land cover comprises V-I-S components at each pixel. Automated Music and spectral Separability-based Endmember Selection is employed on a generic spectral library to obtain the most relevant V-I-S endmember spectra for a particular image, which is then employed in multiple endmember spectral mixture analysis to obtain V-I-S fraction maps. The derived fractions are utilized in combination with the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index and the Modified Normalized Difference Water Index to adapt the CNcα map to different seasons and climatic conditions. The methodology was applied to Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg, over a four-year period to validate the methodology and quantify the increase in the impervious surface area in the commune and the relationship with the runoff dynamics. This approach provides valuable insights into infiltration and runoff dynamics across diverse temporal and geographic ranges.

Sara Valadkhani, Manijeh Nourian, Azam Shirinabadi Farahani

This systematic review aims to assess the effectiveness of various interventions in enhancing sleep quality for hospitalized children. The study analyzed a decade's worth of literature, focusing on interventions targeting sleep improvement in children aged 0-18 years old within a hospital setting. The review encompassed 15 selected articles that met the criteria, exploring interventions such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, physical exercise, storytelling, music therapy, environmental adjustments, and massage therapy. However, notably absent were studies on pharmacological approaches to enhance sleep or alternative interventions akin to those used in older adults. The findings underscore the need for future research to bridge existing gaps, considering a broader spectrum of pediatric age groups and providing updated insights on medication-based approaches.

Ventral tegmental area dopaminergic action in music therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder: A literature review

Meng Ning, Shizhe Wen, Peiling Zhou et al.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating sequela of extraordinary traumatic sufferings that threaten personal health and dramatically attenuate the patient's quality of life. Accumulating lines of evidence suggest that functional disorders in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) dopaminergic system contribute substantially to PTSD symptomatology. Notably, music therapy has been shown to greatly ameliorate PTSD symptoms. In this literature review, we focused on whether music improved PTSD symptoms, based on VTA dopaminergic action, including the effects of music on dopamine (DA)-related gene expression, the promotion of DA release and metabolism, and the activation of VTA functional activities. In addition, the strengths and limitations of the studies concerning the results of music therapy on PTSD are discussed. Collectively, music therapy is an effective approach for PTSD intervention, in which the VTA dopaminergic system may hold an important position.

La clase de música de cámara

Edwin Arguello, Matias Tanco

Does Music Training Enhance Literacy Skills? A Meta-Analysis

Reyna L. Gordon, Hilda M. Fehd, Bruce D. McCandliss

Children's engagement in music practice is associated with enhancements in literacy-related language skills, as demonstrated by multiple reports of correlation across these two domains. Training studies have tested whether engaging in music training directly transfers benefit to children's literacy skill development. Results of such studies, however, are mixed. Interpretation of these mixed results is made more complex by the fact that a wide range of literacy-related outcome measures are used across these studies. Here, we address these challenges via a meta-analytic approach. A comprehensive literature review of peer-reviewed music training studies was built around key criteria needed to test the direct transfer hypothesis, including: (a) inclusion of music training vs. control groups; (b) inclusion of pre- vs. post-comparison measures, and (c) indication that reading instruction was held constant across groups. Thirteen studies were identified (n = 901). Two classes of outcome measures emerged with sufficient overlap to support meta-analysis: phonological awareness and reading fluency. Hours of training, age, and type of control intervention were examined as potential moderators. Results supported the hypothesis that music training leads to gains in phonological awareness skills. The effect isolated by contrasting gains in music training vs. gains in control was small relative to the large variance in these skills (d = 0.2). Interestingly, analyses revealed that transfer effects for rhyming skills tended to grow stronger with increased hours of training. In contrast, no significant aggregate transfer effect emerged for reading fluency measures, despite some studies reporting large training effects. The potential influence of other study design factors were considered, including intervention design, IQ, and SES. Results are discussed in the context of emerging findings that music training may enhance literacy development via changes in brain mechanisms that support both music and language cognition.
