Trajectories in digital art illustration and design: A Zimbabwean perspective

Walter Chipambwa, Munesu Manyengavana, Fungai Sithole

Technology has impacted various sectors, and the field of art and design has witnessed notable changes due to these developments. In today’s world, digital art illustration has emerged as a prominent and popular form of artistic expression, revolutionizing graphic design, and visual communication, particularly with the rise of technological advancements such as artificial intelligence (AI). This study seeks to explore the development of digital art illustration in Zimbabwe through the lens of the technology acceptance framework. The study focused on artists, lecturers, and students familiar with both traditional art and new technologies. Data were collected through two focus group discussions with students from two higher education institutions. In addition, five lecturers and five practicing artists were purposively selected for in-depth interviews, based on their experience in digital art and their background in traditional art. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed that digital art has not yet been fully integrated into the art and design curriculum. The study also highlights the critical role of early art and design education in fostering student interest in digital art illustration. Furthermore, digital art illustration can be viewed as an extension of traditional art; therefore, artists should find ways to embrace both forms to their advantage. This integration can be promoted through blended exhibitions, with support from established galleries. For the design field, the study emphasizes the impact of AI and suggests how various stakeholders can incorporate it into their practices to enhance success. The study concludes that investment in technological infrastructure by the government can help promote digital art illustration as a burgeoning sector, creating new job opportunities for the younger, technology-savvy generation.

Separable Drawings: Extendability and Crossing-Free Hamiltonian Cycles

Oswin Aichholzer, Joachim Orthaber, Birgit Vogtenhuber

Generalizing pseudospherical drawings, we introduce a new class of simple drawings, which we call separable drawings. In a separable drawing, every edge can be closed to a simple curve that intersects each other edge at most once. Curves of different edges might interact arbitrarily. Most notably, we show that (1) every separable drawing of any graph on $n$ vertices in the plane can be extended to a simple drawing of the complete graph $K_{n}$, (2) every separable drawing of $K_{n}$ contains a crossing-free Hamiltonian cycle and is plane Hamiltonian connected, and (3) every generalized convex drawing and every 2-page book drawing is separable. Further, the class of separable drawings is a proper superclass of the union of generalized convex and 2-page book drawings. Hence, our results on plane Hamiltonicity extend recent work on generalized convex drawings by Bergold et al. (SoCG 2024).

Culturally-tailored cookbook for promoting positive dietary change among hypertensive Filipino Americans: a pilot study

Madelyn O. Sijangga, David V. Pack, Nicole Yokota et al.

Introduction Among all Asian American subgroups, Filipino-Americans have consistently been shown to have the highest rates of hypertension, raising risks of heart attack and stroke. Despite this alarming fact, little has been done to investigate culturally-sensitive interventions to control hypertension rates in this vulnerable population. To address the lack of culturally-relevant lifestyle options for blood pressure management currently available to the Filipino community, this exploratory pilot study used a design thinking approach informed by culinary medicine to develop a culturally-tailored, heart-healthy, and low sodium recipe cookbook for Filipino Americans with hypertension and evaluate its feasibility as a hypertension intervention. Methods Our team developed a cookbook using participatory methods and design thinking, utilizing input from five Filipino culinary experts and a Registered Dietitian. The cookbook incorporates traditional Filipino recipes, excerpts from community members’ interviews, and nutrient analyses. Twenty Filipinx-identifying individuals* who self-reported physician-diagnosed hypertension were recruited from Filipino community-based organizations, enrolled into this study, provided with the cookbook, and asked to cook at least one recipe. Pre- and post-intervention surveys were conducted and centered around behavior change and features of the cookbook. Results This study provided evidence for the cookbook’s acceptability and feasibility, with participants’ open-ended responses revealing that the recipes, nutrition labels, illustrations, and cultural aspects of the cookbook increased motivation to achieve dietary change, including reducing sodium in their diet to improve their blood pressure. Participant responses also indicated positive behavior change as a result of using the cookbook, with participants reporting increased likelihood of adopting recommended actions to lower their BP after utilizing the cookbook (x¯ = 80.83%), compared to before (x¯ = 63.75%, p < 0.008), according to Hypertension Self-Care Management scaled scores. Discussion In conclusion, the results of this pilot study demonstrated acceptability of this unique cookbook and provide preliminary findings consistent with increased motivation in participants to make dietary changes and improve personal health, drawing attention to the importance of considering future culturally-tailored health interventions. Next steps should include a robust, randomized controlled trial design comparing measured blood pressure outcomes of an intervention vs. control group. *Filipinx is an inclusive term representing the gender identities of all participants in our study.

Validation of a pictionary-based communication tool for assessing physiological needs and motivational states: the PAIN set

A. Proverbio, F. Pischedda

This Pictionary is suitable for communicating with individual unable to interact (locked-in syndrome, LIS) through the development of Brain Computer Interface (BCI) systems. It includes 60 validated, easy-to-understand illustrated plates depicting adults in various situations affecting their physiological or psychological state. The drawings are in color and represent persons of both sexes and various ethnicities. Twenty participants were interviewed to appropriately design the Pictionary. An additional group of 50 healthy adults (25 women and 25 men) aging 18–33 years was recruited to validate the pictogram corpus. Their schooling levels ranged from middle school to master's degrees. Participants were presented with five runs of randomly mixed pictograms illustrating 12 different motivational states, including primary and secondary needs, affective states, and somatosensory sensations (with five variants for each category). They had to precisely identify the motivational category illustrated (e.g., “Feeling pain” or “Being hungry”) while also providing information about its clarity and unambiguity on a Likert scale. Statistical analyses provided evidence of the strong communicative effectiveness of the illustrations (rated on average 2.7, on a 0 to 3 scale), with an accuracy of 98.4%. The PAIN set could be a valuable communication tool for individuals with LIS, as well as any clinical population lacking verbal communication skills. Its main purpose is to generate electrophysiological markers of internal mental states to be automatically classified by BCI systems.

Guidelines for Data and Safety Monitoring in Pragmatic Randomized Clinical Trials Using Case Studies.

D. Zahrieh, Ivana T. Croghan, J. Inselman et al.

Pragmatic randomized clinical trials (pRCTs) have a unique set of considerations for data and safety monitoring. Because of their unconventional trial designs coupled with collection of multilevel data and implementation outcomes in real-world settings, thoughtful consideration is needed on the presentation of the trial design and accruing data to facilitate review and decision-making by the trial's data and safety monitoring board (DSMB). To our knowledge, there is limited information available in practical guidelines for generalists and medical general practitioners on what to monitor and to report to the DSMB during the conduct of pRCTs and what the DSMB should focus on in its review of reports. This article discusses these matters in the context of 3 case studies focusing on a set of critical data and safety monitoring questions that would be of interest to the generalist conducting pRCTs. In considering these questions, we provide tabular and graphical illustrations of how data can be presented to the DSMB while drawing attention to those areas that the DSMB should focus on in its review of the trial. The strategies and viewpoints discussed herein provide practical guidelines and can serve as a resource for the generalist conducting pRCTs.

ВПЛИВ ДРУГОЇ СВІТОВОЇ ВІЙНИ НА ОЗЕЛЕНЕННЯ ВАРШАВИ

Yuliia Priakha, Liliia Gnatiuk

LA CIENCIA DEL DISEÑO PARA VALORAR LA INNOVACIÓN DEL ESPACIO PÚBLICO DE ESPARCIMIENTO

Laura Teresa Gómez-Vera

AnimeDiffusion: Anime Face Line Drawing Colorization via Diffusion Models

Yu Cao, Xiangqiao Meng, P. Y. Mok et al.

It is a time-consuming and tedious work for manually colorizing anime line drawing images, which is an essential stage in cartoon animation creation pipeline. Reference-based line drawing colorization is a challenging task that relies on the precise cross-domain long-range dependency modelling between the line drawing and reference image. Existing learning methods still utilize generative adversarial networks (GANs) as one key module of their model architecture. In this paper, we propose a novel method called AnimeDiffusion using diffusion models that performs anime face line drawing colorization automatically. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first diffusion model tailored for anime content creation. In order to solve the huge training consumption problem of diffusion models, we design a hybrid training strategy, first pre-training a diffusion model with classifier-free guidance and then fine-tuning it with image reconstruction guidance. We find that with a few iterations of fine-tuning, the model shows wonderful colorization performance, as illustrated in Fig. 1. For training AnimeDiffusion, we conduct an anime face line drawing colorization benchmark dataset, which contains 31696 training data and 579 testing data. We hope this dataset can fill the gap of no available high resolution anime face dataset for colorization method evaluation. Through multiple quantitative metrics evaluated on our dataset and a user study, we demonstrate AnimeDiffusion outperforms state-of-the-art GANs-based models for anime face line drawing colorization. We also collaborate with professional artists to test and apply our AnimeDiffusion for their creation work. We release our code on https://github.com/xq-meng/AnimeDiffusion.

Semantic-aware Generation of Multi-view Portrait Drawings

Biao Ma, Fei Gao, Chang Jiang et al.

Neural radiance fields (NeRF) based methods have shown amazing performance in synthesizing 3D-consistent photographic images, but fail to generate multi-view portrait drawings. The key is that the basic assumption of these methods -- a surface point is consistent when rendered from different views -- doesn't hold for drawings. In a portrait drawing, the appearance of a facial point may changes when viewed from different angles. Besides, portrait drawings usually present little 3D information and suffer from insufficient training data. To combat this challenge, in this paper, we propose a Semantic-Aware GEnerator (SAGE) for synthesizing multi-view portrait drawings. Our motivation is that facial semantic labels are view-consistent and correlate with drawing techniques. We therefore propose to collaboratively synthesize multi-view semantic maps and the corresponding portrait drawings. To facilitate training, we design a semantic-aware domain translator, which generates portrait drawings based on features of photographic faces. In addition, use data augmentation via synthesis to mitigate collapsed results. We apply SAGE to synthesize multi-view portrait drawings in diverse artistic styles. Experimental results show that SAGE achieves significantly superior or highly competitive performance, compared to existing 3D-aware image synthesis methods. The codes are available at https://github.com/AiArt-HDU/SAGE.

Digital and Territorial Trails System for Developing Sustainable Tourism and Enhancing Cultural Heritage in Rural Areas: The Case of San Giovanni Lipioni, Italy

Carlo Costantino, Nicola Mantini, A. C. Benedetti et al.

Depopulation has become a significant issue for local culture and built heritage conservation of many European rural areas. In San Giovanni Lipioni, a province of Chieti (Italy), this phenomenon has increased to the point that, nowadays, there are only 150 inhabitants and no significant economic activities. In this regard, the present paper aims to describe the crucial role of nature-oriented tourism in an economic, social, and revitalization strategy; how digital tools can be used to map and create a territorial trail system between municipalities; and, finally, outline the operations necessary for reactivation. The proposed methodology consists of a first digital survey phase using GPS receivers and outdoor navigation apps. The second phase would create a web platform with a system of virtual itineraries between villages, named “The Golden Leaves Paths”. After that, the last phase concerns the creation of analysis factsheets to guide the maintenance of paths and the design of iconic signage with artistic illustrations based on the oak leaves leitmotif to be installed along the paths. A local social promotion association will employ the outcomes, technical drawings, and strategies to reactivate paths as an attractive element for nature-oriented tourism and create a digital platform to foster the village’s territorial and cultural heritage.

On the Edge of Chaos: Space and Power in Maria Edgeworthʼs ʻThe Grateful Negroʼ (1804)

Jane Suzanne Carroll, Margaret Masterson

ʻThe Grateful Negroʼ (1804) is one of Maria Edgeworthʼs less well-known childrenʼs stories. Set on a Jamaican plantation, it concerns the differing attitudes of two white plantation owners, Mr Edwards and Mr Jefferies, towards enslaved people and a rebellion provoked by Mr Jefferiesʼs cruelty, later averted by Mr Edwardsʼs apparent kindness. The tensions among the characters are made legible through spatiality. We identify the origins of the text in Edgeworthʼs involvement in debates about the transatlantic slave trade and, particularly, her visit to a slave ship while living in Bristol. However, her story shows ambivalence and avoids condemnation, something that may contribute to scholarsʼ lack of interest in the tale. Drawing on discussions of power and space in childrenʼs literature, this essay examines the ways that space encodes, reflects, and problematizes power in ʻThe Grateful Negroʼ. We consider the text in its political and historical context and draw on Bradfordʼs work on liminality in postcolonial theory, and Stephens and McCallumʼs theory of borders as liminal spaces between meanings to frame our comparison of Ireland and Jamaica in the 1790s, and especially the Edwards and Edgeworth plantations that stood on the threshold between order and rebellion. We argue that while the Jefferiesʼs house initially appears as a clear site of power and the slave cabins a clear site of powerlessness within the text, this binary is complicated by the presence of the forest—a locus for magic, rebellion, and alternative might—and by the spectre of Britain, the centre of colonial, imperial, and administrative authority that haunts the narrative. Edgeworth puts these spaces in uncomfortable proximity, creating a textual landscape that teeters on the edge of chaos.

Stroke-based Rendering and Planning for Robotic Performance of Artistic Drawing

Ivaylo Ilinkin, Daeun Song, Young J. Kim

We present a new robotic drawing system based on stroke-based rendering (SBR). Our motivation is the artistic quality of the whole performance. Not only should the generated strokes in the final drawing resemble the input image, but the stroke sequence should also exhibit a human artist's planning process. Thus, when a robot executes the drawing task, both the drawing results and the way the robot executes would look artistic. Our SBR system is based on image segmentation and depth estimation. It generates the drawing strokes in an order that allows for the intended shape to be perceived quickly and for its detailed features to be filled in and emerge gradually when observed by the human. This ordering represents a stroke plan that the drawing robot should follow to create an artistic rendering of images. We experimentally demonstrate that our SBR-based drawing makes visually pleasing artistic images, and our robotic system can replicate the result with proper sequences of stroke drawing.

Design of battery materials via defects and doping

Khang Hoang

This chapter illustrates the use of defect physics as a conceptual and theoretical framework for understanding and designing battery materials. It starts with a methodology for first-principles studies of defects in complex transition-metal oxides. The chapter then considers defects that are activated in a cathode material during synthesis, during measurements, and during battery use. Through these cases, it discusses possible defect landscapes in the material and their implications, guidelines for materials design via defect-controlled synthesis, mechanisms for electronic and ionic conduction and for electrochemical extraction and (re-)insertion, and effects of doping. Although specific examples are taken from studies of battery cathode materials, the computational approach and discussions are general and applicable to any ionic, electronic, or mixed ionic-electronic conducting materials.

Networks for Social Impact

M. Shumate, Katherine R. Cooper

Networks for Social Impact is a broad review of how nonprofits, businesses, and governments work together to tackle social problems. The book takes a systems approach to explain how networks make a social impact, and when they are unlikely to do so. It argues that network design and management is not a one-size-fits-all formula. Instead, the type of social issue, the mechanism for social impact, environment, and resources available each determine appropriate choices. Drawing on research from public administration, psychology, business, network science, social work, and communication, it synthesizes what we know about how to best design and manage networks. It includes illustrations from 30 original case studies; they describe groups of organizations addressing issues such as gender-based violence, educational outcomes, senior care, veterans’ services, mental health and wellness, and climate change. Additionally, the volume describes critical issues that leaders address in creating and managing networks, including social issue analysis, network governance, securing and managing funding, dealing with power and conflict, using data effectively, and managing change. Each chapter includes tools for network leaders to use to handle these issues. This book is neither a Pollyannaish, pro-collaboration account of the benefits of network approaches, nor is it a critical view of these efforts. Instead, it highlights the opportunities and challenges of networks.
