Heterogeneous Cellular Response of Primary and Metastatic Human Gastric Adenocarcinoma Cell Lines to Magnoflorine and Its Additive Interaction with Docetaxel

Aneta Grabarska, Jarogniew J. Luszczki, Kinga Gawel et al.

Gastric cancer is the most common cancer and remains the leading cause of cancer death worldwide. In this study, the anticancer action of magnoflorine isolated via counter-current chromatography from the methanolic extract of Berberis vulgaris root against gastric cancer in models of primary ACC-201 and AGS and metastatic MKN-74 and NCI-N87 cell lines was analyzed. Cell viability and proliferation were tested through the use of MTT and BrdU tests, respectively. Cell cycle progression and apoptosis were evaluated using flow cytometry. The interaction of magnoflorine and docetaxel has been examined through isobolographic analysis. Moreover, potential toxicity was verified in zebrafish in an in vivo model. Gastric cancer cell lines revealed different responses to magnoflorine treatment with regard to viability/proliferation, apoptosis induction and cell cycle inhibition without any undesirable changes in the development of larval zebrafish at the tested concentrations. What is more, magnoflorine in combination with docetaxel produced an additive pharmacological interaction in all studied gastric cancer cell lines, which may suggest a complementary mechanism of action of both compounds. Taken together, these findings provide a foundation for the possibility of magnoflorine as a potential therapeutic approach for gastric cancer and merits further investigation, which may pave the way for clinical uses of magnoflorine.

dS/dS and $$ T\overline{T} $$

Victor Gorbenko, Eva Silverstein, Gonzalo Torroba

Abstract The $$ T\overline{T} $$ T T ¯ deformation of a conformal field theory has a dual description as a cutoff AdS 3 spacetime, at least at the level of pure 3d gravity. We generalize this deformation in such a way that it builds up a patch of bulk dS 3 spacetime instead. At each step along the trajectory in the space of 2d theories, the theory is deformed by a specific combination of $$ T\overline{T} $$ T T ¯ and the two-dimensional cosmological constant. This provides a concrete holographic dual for the warped throat on the gravity side of the dS/dS duality, at leading order in large central charge. We also analyze a sequence of excitations of this throat on both sides of the duality, as well as the entanglement entropy. Our results point toward a mechanism for obtaining de Sitter solutions starting from seed conformal field theories with AdS duals.

D = 11 dS <sub>5</sub> backgrounds with enhanced supersymmetry

D Farotti, J B Gutowski

Abstract We classify all warped dS 5 backgrounds in D = 11 supergravity with enhanced supersymmetry. We show that backgrounds preserving N = 16 supersymmetries consist of either a stack of M5 branes with transverse space R 5 , or a generalized M5-brane configuration with transverse space R × N 4 , where N 4 is a hyper-Kähler manifold and the M5-brane harmonic function is determined by a hyper-Kähler potential on N 4. Moreover, we find that there are no backgrounds preserving exactly N = 24 supersymmetries. Backgrounds preserving N = 32 supersymmetries correspond to either R 1 , 10 or A d S 7 × S 4 .

Bed-Load Transport in Two Different-Sized Mountain Catchments: Mlynne and Lososina Streams, Polish Carpathians

Artur Radecki-Pawlik, Piotr Kuboń, Bartosz Radecki-Pawlik et al.

The prediction and calculation of the volume of gravel and/or sand transported down streams and rivers—called bed-load transport is one of the most difficult things for river engineers and designers because, in addition to field measurements, personnel involved in such activities need to be highly experienced. Bed-load transport treated by many engineers marginally or omitted and often receives only minor consideration from engineers or may be entirely disregarded simply because they do not know how to address the issue—in many cases, this is a fundamental problem in river management tasks such as: flood protection works; river bank protection works against erosion; building bridges and culverts; building water reservoirs and dams; checking dams and any other hydraulic structures. Thus, to share our experience in our paper, bed-load transport was calculated in two river/stream mountain catchments, which are different in terms of the characteristics of the catchment area and the level of river engineering works performed along the stream channel—both are tributaries of the Dunajec River and have similar Carpathian flysh geology. The studies were performed in the Mlyne stream and in the Lososina River in Polish Carpathians. Mlynne is one of the streams in the Gorce Mountains—it is prone to flash flooding events and has caused many problems with floods in the past. It flows partially in the natural river channel and partially in a trained river channel lined with concrete revetments. The stream bed load is accumulated in the reservoir upstream of the check dam. The Lososina River is one of the Polish Carpathian mountainous streams which crosses the south of the Beskid Wyspowy Mountains. It mostly has a gravel bed and it is flashy and experiences frequent flooding spring. At the mouth of the Lososina River, there is one of the largest Polish Carpathian artificial lakes—the Czchow lake. The Lososina mostly transports gravel as the bed load to the Czchow water reservoir where the sediment is deposited. In the early seventies, the Lososina was partly canalised, especially in places where passes inhabited areas. The paper compares the situation of bed-load transport in the Lososina River before and after engineering training works showing how much sediment is transported downstream along the river channel to the Czchow artificial lake. Also compared is the Mlynne bed load transport upstream and downstream from the check dam showing how much sediment might be transported and deposited in the reservoir upstream from the check dam and when one could expect this reservoir to be clogged.

Translating Wor(l)ds

The book series, edited by Nicoletta Pesaro and sponsored by the Department of Asian and North African Studies, aims to give voice to a time-honoured branch of theoretical and practical research across the disciplines and research domains within the Department. The series aims to establish a platform for scholarly discussion and a space for international dialogue on the translation of Asian and North African languages. In doing so, the project aims to observe and verify the translingual and transcultural dynamics triggered by translation from and into said ‘languages-cultures’, as well as to identify and explore the deep cultural mechanisms and structures involved in interethnic behaviours and relationships. Translation is also a major research tool in the humanities. As a matter of fact, a hermeneutic potential in terms of cultural mediation is inherent in translation activities and in the reflection on translation: it is precisely this potential that allows scholars, in both their research and dissemination work, to bring to the surface the interethnic and intercultural dynamics regulating the relationships between civilisations, both diachronically and synchronically. The project is a continuation and a development of the research carried out in recent years by the former Department of East Asian Studies – now Department of Asian and North African Studies – of Ca’ Foscari University of Venice through a series of initiatives organised by the research group on the translation of Asian languages “Laboratorio sulla Traduzione delle Lingue orientali” (Laboratori sulle lingue orientali). Such activities involved periodical meetings on translation, whose objective was to introduce and discuss specific issues in translation from and into Asian languages, as well as several international events (workshops, conferences, and symposia).
