Zapomniana fototeka Działu Rękopisów Pruskiej Biblioteki Państwowej. Wokół problematyki niemieckich archiwów fotograficznych w zbiorach polskich

Ewa Manikowska

“More than the travels around the world, on your nest full of peace, you find each time the playful love:” Lollobrigida’s motherhood in admirers’ letters

Federico Vitella

Post-World War II fan letters were more a means to something than an end for their writers. And yet it was certainly not excluded that the fans of this or that actor were content to compliment the career of their favorites or to generically wish for their serenity, without expecting anything in return. Many letters were stimulated precisely by the anniversary of major holidays, by the release of a new film, by a birthday, if not by even more specific personal contingencies, such as Gina Lollobrigida’s pregnancy, the subject of unparalleled media coverage in 1957 Italy. The Biblioteca Chiarini (Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia) still preserves a small sample of the bursting flow of letters of congratulations that accompanied the publication of this or that update article on Milko Junior’s gestation, including simple expressions of good wishes, reflections on parenthood, tributes materials (blankets and dresses) and even a lullaby specially composed to help the child sleep and guarantee the right rest for the exceptional mother. The present article intends to study this extraordinary corpus of letters, problematizing the historiographical evidence acquired from studies on letters to the powerful.

State of the Art on Diffusion Models for Visual Computing

Ryan Po, Wang Yifan, Vladislav Golyanik et al.

The field of visual computing is rapidly advancing due to the emergence of generative artificial intelligence (AI), which unlocks unprecedented capabilities for the generation, editing, and reconstruction of images, videos, and 3D scenes. In these domains, diffusion models are the generative AI architecture of choice. Within the last year alone, the literature on diffusion-based tools and applications has seen exponential growth and relevant papers are published across the computer graphics, computer vision, and AI communities with new works appearing daily on arXiv. This rapid growth of the field makes it difficult to keep up with all recent developments. The goal of this state-of-the-art report (STAR) is to introduce the basic mathematical concepts of diffusion models, implementation details and design choices of the popular Stable Diffusion model, as well as overview important aspects of these generative AI tools, including personalization, conditioning, inversion, among others. Moreover, we give a comprehensive overview of the rapidly growing literature on diffusion-based generation and editing, categorized by the type of generated medium, including 2D images, videos, 3D objects, locomotion, and 4D scenes. Finally, we discuss available datasets, metrics, open challenges, and social implications. This STAR provides an intuitive starting point to explore this exciting topic for researchers, artists, and practitioners alike.

SkyGlyphs: Reflections on the Design of a Delightful Visualization

Bon Adriel Aseniero, Sheelagh Carpendale, George Fitzmaurice et al.

In creating SkyGlyphs, our goal was to develop a data visualization that could possibly capture people's attention and spark their curiosity to explore a dataset. This work was inspired by a mingling of research including serendipitous interactions, visualizations for public displays, and personal visualizations. SkyGlyphs is a nonconventional whimsical visualization, depicting datapoints as animated balloons in space. We designed it to encourage non-experts to casually browse the contents of a repository through visual interactions like linking and grouping of datapoints. Our contributions include SkyGlyphs' representation and our design reflection that reveals a perspective on how to design delightful visualizations.

Arts and Humanities Interventions for Flourishing in Healthy Adults: A Mixed Studies Systematic Review

Yerin Shim, Andrew T. Jebb, L. Tay et al.

The arts and humanities have enriched human life in various ways throughout history. Yet, an analysis of empirical research into the effects of arts and humanities engagement remains incomplete, calling for a systematic and integrative understanding of the role of arts and humanities in promoting human flourishing. The present study used a mixed studies systematic review approach to integrating recent evidence from 27 intervention studies on the effectiveness of arts and humanities interventions on psychological flourishing of healthy adults. Our final dataset both represented quantitative and qualitative data on real-world interventions that encompassed a range of arts and humanities domains, including music, theater, visual arts, and integrative arts. A separate quantitative and qualitative data synthesis on study characteristics and psychological flourishing outcomes and a meta-integration of both types of evidence were conducted. Overall, arts and humanities interventions were associated with positive changes in a range of psychological flourishing outcomes, with overlapping quantitative and qualitative evidence for emotional, social, and sense of self outcomes. A secondary analysis explored key contextual and implementation features that contributed to effectiveness. Recommendations for future research and practice are provided based on our review.

Visual link retrieval and knowledge discovery in painting datasets

Giovanna Castellano, E. Lella, G. Vessio

Visual arts are of inestimable importance for the cultural, historic and economic growth of our society. One of the building blocks of most analysis in visual arts is to find similarity relationships among paintings of different artists and painting schools. To help art historians better understand visual arts, this paper presents a framework for visual link retrieval and knowledge discovery in digital painting datasets. Visual link retrieval is accomplished by using a deep convolutional neural network to perform feature extraction and a fully unsupervised nearest neighbor mechanism to retrieve links among digitized paintings. Historical knowledge discovery is achieved by performing a graph analysis that makes it possible to study influences among artists. An experimental evaluation on a database collecting paintings by very popular artists shows the effectiveness of the method. The unsupervised strategy makes the method interesting especially in cases where metadata are scarce, unavailable or difficult to collect.

Arts-based Methods in Socially Engaged Research Practice: A Classification Framework

Qingchun Wang, Sara Coemans, Richard Siegesmund et al.

Arts-based research has recently gained an increasing popularity within qualitative inquiry. It is applied in various disciplines, including health, psychology, education, and anthropology. Arts-based research uses artistic forms and expressions to explore, understand, represent, and even challenge human experiences. In this paper we aim to create order in the messy field of artistically inspired methods of socially engaged research. We review literature to establish study and distinguished three major categories for classifying arts-based research: research about art, art as research, and art in research. We further identify five main forms of arts-based research: visual art, sound art, literary art, performing art, and new media. Relevant examples of socially engaged research are provided to illustrate how different artistic methods are used within the forms identified. This classification framework provides artists and researchers a general introduction to arts-based research and helps them to better position themselves and their projects in a field in full development.

The benefits of community-based participatory arts activities for people living with dementia: a thematic scoping review

M. Ward, C. Milligan, E. Rose et al.

ABSTRACT Background The drive towards living well with dementia has resulted in a growing recognition of the value of community-based participatory arts activities. This review aimed to explore their overall impact and holistic benefits for people with early to moderate stages of dementia. Methods Using a scoping review methodology and thematic analysis, this review explored relevant literature published between 2008 and 2019. Results 26 published papers were identified, comprising visual arts, literary arts, comedy, music and dance. The key themes included person-centred, in-the-moment approaches; participation and communication; attention and cognition; social cohesion and relationships; and the role of space, place and objects. Conclusions There is strong evidence in support of using participatory arts for dementia, regardless of art form. In-the-moment and person-centred approaches were deemed impactful. Further research is needed to explore the importance of setting, material culture and the methodological or theoretical perspectives in participatory arts and dementia research.

Picture of a pandemic: visual aids in the COVID-19 crisis

Ryoko Hamaguchi, Saman Nematollahi, Daniel J. Minter

Abstract As a global crisis, COVID-19 has underscored the challenge of disseminating evidence-based public health recommendations amidst a rapidly evolving, often uncensored information ecosystem—one fueled in part by an unprecedented degree of connected afforded through social media. In this piece, we explore an underdiscussed intersection between the visual arts and public health, focusing on the use of validated infographics and other forms of visual communication to rapidly disseminate accurate public health information during the COVID-19 pandemic. We illustrate our arguments through our own experience in creating a validated infographic for patients, now disseminated through social media and other outlets across the world in nearly 20 translations. Visual communication offers a creative and practical medium to bridge critical health literacy gaps, empower diverse patient communities through evidence-based information and facilitate public health advocacy during this pandemic and the ‘new normal’ that lies ahead.

Patterns of social inequality in arts and cultural participation: Findings from a nationally representative sample of adults living in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

H. Mak, R. Coulter, D. Fancourt

Context A significant amount of literature indicates the health benefits of arts engagement. However, as this engagement is socially patterned, differential access to and participation in the arts may contribute to social and health inequalities. Objective This study aimed to uncover the patterns of participation in arts activities and engagement with culture and heritage among adults in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and to examine whether such patterns are associated with demographic and socioeconomic characteristics. Methodology We applied latent class analysis to data on arts and cultural participation among 30 695 people in the Understanding Society study. Multinomial logistic regression was used to identify predictors for the patterns of activity engagement. Results For arts participation, adults were clustered into “engaged omnivores,” “visual and literary arts,” “performing arts” and “disengaged.” For cultural engagement, adults were clustered into “frequently engaged,” “infrequently engaged” and “rarely engaged.” Regression analysis showed that the patterns of arts activity were structured by demographic and socioeconomic factors. Conclusion This study reveals a social gradient in arts and cultural engagement. Given the health benefits of arts engagement, this suggests the importance of promoting equal access to arts and cultural programmes, to ensure that unequal engagement does not exacerbate health inequalities.

SWOT analysis to evaluate the integration of online education with a participatory approach in the field of art

Parnaz Goodarzparvari

Problem definition: The strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) analysis is one of the strategic planning approaches used to evaluate the status of a plan or strategy. The strengths describe which aspects of a topic or part of an organization are superior and what distinguishes it apart from the competitors. The weaknesses stop the effectiveness of a strategy at its desired level. Moreover, the opportunities indicate the desirable external factors which can provide the target strategy with a competitive advantage, while threats point out to the factors that are likely to harm the organization or its strategies. It should be noted that this method, in addition to the strategic planning, is generally employed in the situation analysis. In fact, this analysis is considered as an effective tool for identifying the environmental conditions and internal capabilities of a system. Objective: The present research is based on the collected experiences of online education in the field of art, especially with practical content, which has been proposed and employed as an effective strategy in the field of education along with in-person training on the basis of the coronavirus pandemic conditions and its limitations. Research method: The current study has been conducted by collecting a questionnaire and analyzing the data in an indirect manner with the aim of avoiding the inclusion of tastes in the research findings. The SWOT analysis las been also performed using a quadruple standard worksheet. Resulte: The research has been mainly focused on the use of creative methods by the teacher to induce the spirit of active participation and collaboration in order to enhance the learning experience of the students. It is known that the practical skills training is not possible except through the synergistic interactions resulting from active participation. The results illustrate the importance of evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of the strategy in achieving the desired results for the novel techniques.

Psychosocial outcomes of dyadic arts interventions for people with a dementia and their informal caregivers: A systematic review.

P. Bourne, P. Camic, S. Crutch

Dementia is a neurodegenerative syndrome that can lead to profound psychological and social challenges for people with dementia and their informal caregivers. Previous research has found positive effects of arts-based interventions for people with dementia and caregivers that have been dyadic in nature and the present article sought to review these findings. A systematic literature review was conducted to investigate psychosocial outcomes of dyadic arts interventions. PsychINFO, Medline, Web of Science and ASSIA databases (from journal inception to March 2020) were searched as well as Google Scholar and reference lists of relevant studies were searched. Interventions were delivered to people with dementia and their caregivers in community-based settings across five countries. Thirteen peer-reviewed journal articles met the criteria for inclusion in this review, six focusing on performing arts and seven on visual arts. The findings suggested that choral singing and visual arts interventions may have positive effects on psychosocial outcomes for both people with dementia and their informal caregivers. Improved well-being, quality of life, mood, enhanced identity and decreased social isolation were found in some studies. Importantly, across all studies, participants reported enjoying arts activities. This is the first review to systematically assess dyadic arts activities in a dementia context. These activities offer enjoyable and engaging experiences for many person with dementia and caregivers and were generally found to have positive results but mostly small sample size, lack of control groups and different outcome measures made comparisons challenging. Future research recommendations include further theoretical development, identifying key intervention components, and specifying relevant and measurable theoretically informed outcomes within dyadic interventions for this population.

‘Raising the temperature’ : the arts on a warming planet

D. Galafassi, Sacha Kagan, M. Milkoreit et al.

The search for decisive actions to remain below 1.5 °C of global temperature rise will require profound cultural transformations. Yet our knowledge of how to promote and bring about such deep transformative changes in the minds and behaviours of individuals and societies is still limited. As climate change unravels and the planet becomes increasingly connected, societies will need to articulate a shared purpose that is both engaging and respectful of cultural diversity. Thus, there is a growing need to ‘raise the temperature’ of integration between multiple ways of knowing climate change. We have reviewed a range of literatures and synthesized them in order to draw out the perceived role of the arts in fostering climate transformations. Our analysis of climate-related art projects and initiatives shows increased engagement in recent years, particularly with the narrative, visual and performing arts. The arts are moving beyond raising awareness and entering the terrain of interdisciplinarity and knowledge co-creation. We conclude that climate-arts can contribute positively in fostering the imagination and emotional predisposition for the development and implementation of the transformations necessary to address the 1.5 °C challenge.

Arts-based interventions to improve cognition in older persons with mild cognitive impairment: A systematic review of randomized controlled trials

Zhi Hui Fong, Ser Hong Tan, R. Mahendran et al.

Abstract Objectives As the global burden of dementia rises, the search for preventive measures such as interventions for mild cognitive impairment (MCI) remains a research priority. While arts-based interventions have demonstrated some success in improving cognitive functioning among older adults and those with dementia, its effectiveness for older persons with MCI remains unexplored. We conducted a systematic review to examine the effects of arts-based interventions on cognition in older persons with MCI. Method The following databases were searched in November 2019: PubMed, EMBASE, PsycINFO, and CINAHL Plus, supplemented by Google Scholar and ALOIS. Study inclusion criteria were older persons aged ≥ 60 with MCI; arts-based interventions such as dance, drama, music, or visual arts; and randomized controlled trial with cognitive outcome. Database search, study selection, and data extraction were conducted independently by 2 reviewers. Results Eleven randomized controlled trials examining 13 interventions (817 participants) were identified, of which 4 involved visual arts, 4 dance/movement, 3 music, and 2 storytelling. Significant improvement on at least one cognitive outcome was reported in 10 of the 13 interventions. These included improvements in global cognition (6/7 interventions), learning and memory (5/9), complex attention (4/10), executive functioning (2/6), language (2/3), and perceptual-motor function (1/4). Conclusion This review found that arts-based interventions can potentially improve various aspects of cognitive functioning in older persons with MCI, although our confidence was dampened by methodological limitations such as the moderate-to-high risk of bias present in studies and heterogeneity in the way MCI was defined. Recommendations for future research are discussed.
