Heritage-making as artistic practice? Mateusz Okoński’s cabinet of curiosities as fleeting heritage

Is it possible to create heritage through artistic practice? The authors ask this question through the perspective of the work of Mateusz Okoński, a Polish mid-career artist and exhibition designer whose passion for collecting has resulted in the creation of a cabinet of curiosities at his private apartment in Kraków. The discussion in the article encompasses the practice of the collection’s creation, the temporality of the objects and the collection itself, the authenticity of the cabinet of curiosities, and also the various multi-sensory narratives which are offered by the artist to those who visit his salon. The authors investigate whether such collecting and the resulting cabinet of curiosities comprises heritage or whether it is merely an act of collecting historic objects, and conclude that heritage-making can be the result of artistic practice.

O conceito de xenofobia na perspectiva da Teoria Prototípica de Categorização: uma análise dos conceitos atribuídos ao povo do Nordeste brasileiro no discurso bolsonarista

Resumo O processo migratório é um fenômeno global que se origina a partir de diversas variáveis e que gera conflitos entre populações receptoras e migrantes. A xenofobia é um processo discriminatório caracterizado como um tipo de desrespeito e/ou intolerância relacionado a locais de origem, sotaques, culturas, religiões ou etnias de pessoas que são migrantes. Este estudo tem o objetivo de analisar a mobilização do conceito de xenofobia no discurso bolsonarista, com base na teoria de categorização prototípica. Trata-se de um estudo de natureza exploratória, descritiva com abordagem qualitativa e pautada na pesquisa bibliográfica e documental. O corpus que compõe a etapa de análise dos dados é composto por dez declarações proferidas pelo ex-presidente Bolsonaro, durante o período em que foi deputado federal até o seu mandato de presidente, em entrevistas públicas, quando se remete ao povo do Nordeste brasileiro. As etapas de levantamento, tratamento e análise das informações foram conduzidas pela técnica de análise de conteúdo. O estudo caracteriza a ideia de xenofobia regional e apresenta os pressupostos dos modelos clássico e prototípico de categorização. Identifica as principais características do conceito de xenofobia segundo a teoria clássica e articula a noção de pertencimento às possibilidades apontadas pela teoria prototípica. Discute-se, assim, o pertencimento dos conceitos atribuídos ao povo nordestino no discurso bolsonarista à categoria de xenofobia, à luz da teoria prototípica de categorização.

Documenting Traces Left on Ceramic Surfaces by Tools Used for Treatment and/or Decoration: an Experimental Approach

This study explores the role of experimental archaeology in investigating ancient ceramic production techniques. Utilising materials analysed by Rammo (2017) from the fortified settlements of Asva, Ridala, and Iru in Estonia, we focus on two types of impressions on sherds dated to the beginning of the 1st millennium BC. Our aim was to test the hypotheses concerning the execution methods of these impressions and evaluate the effectiveness of experimental methodologies in recreating them. Through an experimental protocol, we produced clay tablets to simulate the decorative techniques identified by Riina Rammo. Key findings indicate that decorating at the leather-hard stage, as opposed to the soft clay stage, yields notable differences in the visibility and depth of impressions. While our experiments confirmed some aspects of Rammo’s hypotheses regarding Type 2 and Type 4 impressions, discrepancies emerged that suggest variations in pressure application and timing may significantly affect the resulting patterns. This study emphasises the value of experimental archaeology in hypothesis testing, while also highlighting topics for further research, particularly regarding post-firing treatments and their implications for understanding the functional and aesthetic roles of decorations on ceramic vessels.

Enhancing Participatory Design Through Blockchain

Participatory Design (PD) is a complex approach to designing products, services, or systems that actively involve the people who use, will use, or will be impacted by the design process. This article explores the use of blockchain to improve upon key challenge areas in PD, with a series of foundational premises proposed to address three specific areas (power dynamics, trust, and participation) where existing PD literature has identified challenges to successful PD administration. Blockchain technology may help to improve outcomes in these areas, and provide a platform for successful PD administration that is superior to those used for PD projects today. Specific uses for blockchain in PD initiatives are illuminated, along with corresponding benefits that may enhance the outcomes of PD initiatives.

Cultura e anomia no compartilhamento de dados: uma perspectiva a partir dos pesquisadores

Resumo A retenção ou publicação de dados pode diversificar conforme a cultura, os valores predominantes em determinada área do conhecimento ou as práticas adotadas por pesquisadores individuais. A anomia pode ocorrer quando há um desequilíbrio entre as metas institucionais e os valores culturais, com maior relevância dos valores culturais coletivos ou individuais. Dessa forma, pesquisadores podem não concordar com as metas institucionais e praticar condutas desviantes. O objetivo deste artigo foi apontar indícios da influência cultural sobre o estado de anomia em pesquisadores no processo de gestão e compartilhamento dos dados de sua pesquisa. Foi utilizada a pesquisa documental e exploratória e o método de análise de conteúdo com aplicação de framework que considera as dimensões institucional e individual. Os resultados apontaram indícios de que os pesquisadores têm pouca clareza sobre as metas institucionais para a gestão e o compartilhamento de dados. Conclui-se que a possível anomia no contexto dos pesquisadores está associada com desconhecimento ou dubiedade sobre as normas institucionais, sociais e morais, desequilíbrio entre as metas e os caminhos para atingi-las, descumprimento das orientações institucionais e pouca habilidade para a gestão de dados.

Reflexões sobre patrimonialização: a arte e a mediação no Museu Casa das Imagens

Casa da Imagem (Vila Nova de Gaia), opened in 2012, is a space dedicated to culture, art and mediation, comprising the preservation of a photographic collection and a former printing industry factory. In this article, we reflect on the context of Casa da Imagem’s performance and the process of creation and development of its museum, the Casa das Imagens’ Museeum. In this context, we discuss the approaches and actions implemented over the last years, identifying the theoretical references that underlie the patrimonialisation process. This analysis clarifies concepts but also problematizes the tensions brought by the artistic and mediation practices at Casa da Imagem. The methodology followed is based on direct and participant observation, in which the author takes part in the process under study, as well as on literature review. This article, based on the analysis of a case study, contributes to a reflection on the articulation between theory and practice in a museological context.

After-hours events at the National Museum of Scotland: a product for attracting, engaging and retaining new museum audiences?

ABSTRACT Cultural heritage is recognized as one of the major contributors to the economy and has traditionally been funded from the public sector. Operating in an increasingly competitive tourism environment, museums have moved away from their traditional role as collectors and conservators of artefacts of historical importance, to become more audience- focused visitor attractions. This obligation to meet the needs and wants of its visitors has resulted in an improved museum experience, where museums are increasingly offering specially curated after-hours event experiences to attract, engage and retain new audiences such as Generation Y. This research uses National Museums Scotland as a case study to apply audience development and visitor attraction management theories to explore the effectiveness of after-hours events in attracting, engaging and retaining new museum audiences. Following a comprehensive narrative literature review, it employs qualitative semi-structured interviews and a quantitative on-line self-completion survey to collect the necessary data. The research findings suggest that after-hours events have been successful in attracting and engaging new museum audiences and encouraging repeat visits, therefore achieving the event and museum objectives. It is also seen that products designed specifically for one new audience may have broader appeal in engaging with other new and established audiences.

Sensitive Heritage: Ethnographic Museums, Provenance Research, and the Potentialities of Restitutions

This introduction lays out this special issue, which juxtaposes articles on approaches to provenance research, conducted at German museum and university institutions, with articles on past, present and future potentialities of restitutions to originating societies in Aotearoa New Zealand, Australia and Namibia. In doing so, the issue makes the argument that provenance research and processes of restitution, and their underlying ethical and sensitive considerations, generate, rather than restrict, new knowledge. They are brimming with epistemic and ontological potentialities: for the people related to the material entities concerned, for the (anthropological) knowledge about them, and for the institutions involved. The ultimate goal pursued is the establishment and further development of provenance research and processes of restitution as ethnographic work and an integral dimension of ethnographic museums in the 21st century.

La colección arqueológica del Museo do Pobo Galego

El Museo do Pobo Galego, que abrió sus puertas en 1977, centra sus contenidos en las diversas manifestaciones de la cultura gallega desde una visión antropológica, reuniendo una colección de más de 12000 piezas, en su mayoría de carácter etnográfico; aun así, entre sus fondos se conservan cerca de medio millar de piezas arqueológicas, de cronología muy variada, procedentes todas ellas de hallazgos casuales en superficie.

El Museo Arqueológico Municipal de Crevillent (Alicante). La historia de un compromiso con el patrimonio arqueológico local

En esta colaboración se pretende condensar más de sesenta años de actividades arqueológicas en una comarca y un término municipal de extraordinaria importancia arqueológica cuyos antecedentes se remontan al Paleolítico Superior y discurren sin solución de continuidad por todas las culturas del pasado humano de estas tierras hasta la actualidad. Todo ello se puede conocer a través de un Museo que pretende ser el motor de la conservación, investigación y divulgación del patrimonio arqueológico crevillentino. Se dan a conocer asimismo y de modo sucinto, los principales proyectos de investigación llevados a cabo en los yacimientos crevillentinos, así como el proyecto de excavaciones que en la actualidad está en marcha en el yacimiento de la Penya Negra y el nuevo proyecto museográfico.

El Museo Arqueológico Municipal de Jerez de la Frontera tiene una larga trayectoria. Su origen se encuentra en el Depósito Municipal de Antigüedades creado en la ciudad a mediados del siglo XVIII, el más antiguo de estas características del que se tiene constancia en Andalucía. Su recorrido no es lineal, sino fluctuante, con periodos inciertos y otros de gran brillantez. Se puede ordenar en varios apartados: formación del Depósito de Antigüedades-Colección Arqueológica, que abarca grosso modo desde mediados del siglo XVIII hasta mediados del siglo XX; constitución del Museo Arqueológico Municipal en 1962; traslado y apertura de nueva sede en 1992, y ampliación y reforma en la primera década del siglo XXI.

Hipótesis para una contextualización del Hypnos del Prado

: Hasta el siglo xix la escultura de Hypnos conservada en el Museo del Prado se consideró una representación de Mercurio. Su procedencia se desconoce. Sin embargo, es posible rastrear en crónicas y documentos del siglo xvi la presencia de esta pieza en las colecciones de antigüedades romanas del Renacimiento. Por otra parte, se formulan algunas hipótesis en torno al lugar donde este Hypnos se encontraba en época antigua, probablemente en el Palacio Imperial del Palatino.
