Observation of the $Λ_b^0 \to J/ψΞ^- K^+$ and $Ξ_b^0 \to J/ψΞ^- π^+$ decays

LHCb collaboration, R. Aaij, A. S. W. Abdelmotteleb et al.

The first observation of the $Ξ_b^0 \to J/ψΞ^- π^+$ decay and the most precise measurement of the branching fraction of the $Λ_b^0 \to J/ψΞ^- K^+$ decay are reported, using proton-proton collision data from the LHCb experiment collected in 2016--2018 at a centre-of-mass energy of 13~TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4~fb$^{-1}$. Using the $Λ_b^0 \to J/ψΛ$ and $Ξ_b^0 \to J/ψΞ^-$ decays as normalisation channels, the ratios of branching fractions are measured to be: \[ \frac{\mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0 \to J/ψΞ^- K^+)}{\mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0 \to J/ψΛ)} = (1.17 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.08)\times 10^{-2} \, , \] \[ \frac{\mathcal{B}(Ξ_b^0 \to J/ψΞ^- π^+)}{\mathcal{B}(Ξ_b^0 \to J/ψΞ^-)} = (11.9 \pm 1.4 \pm 0.6)\times 10^{-2}\, , \] where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

The Paradigm Shift in the Pakistan Stock Exchange’s Financial Integration Post-FTA and CPEC

Abdul Wahid, Muhammad Zubair Mumtaz

This paper examines whether regional connectivity causes return and volatility spillovers and the co-movement of stock exchanges to shift from international to regional markets. Using the China-Pakistan free trade agreement (FTA) of 2006 and the China-Pakista Economic Corridor (CPEC) agreement to represent events of regional connectivity, we test this proposition based on data for two regional stock exchanges (the Pakistan Stock Exchange and Shenzhen StockExchange) and two global markets (the FTSE 100 and Nasdaq). We divide the convergence and co-integration of the stock markets into three phases: overall sample (2001–17), pre-FTA and post-FTA, and pre-CPEC and post-CPEC. Applying a GARCH (1, 1) model, co-integration, Granger causality andseasonality, we find that regional connectivity causes return and volatility spillovers and co-movements in the Pakistan Stock Exchange to shift from  international markets to regional markets.

Measurement of the branching fraction ratios $R(D^{+})$ and $R(D^{*+})$ using muonic $τ$ decays

LHCb collaboration, R. Aaij, A. S. W. Abdelmotteleb et al.

The branching fraction ratios of $\overline{B}^0\to D^+τ^-\overlineν_τ$ and $\overline{B}^0\to D^{*+}τ^-\overlineν_τ$ decays are measured with respect to their muonic counterparts, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.0 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV. The reconstructed final states are formed by combining $D^+$ mesons with $τ^-\toμ^-\overlineν_μν_τ$ candidates, where the $D^+$ is reconstructed via the $D^+\to K^-π^+π^+$ decay. The results are \begin{align*} R(D^{+}) &= 0.249 \pm 0.043 \pm 0.047, R(D^{*+}) &= 0.402 \pm 0.081\pm 0.085, \end{align*} where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The two measurements have a correlation coefficient of $-0.39$ and are compatible with the Standard Model.

Measurement of $CP$ asymmetries in $Λ_b^0\to ph^{-}$ decays

LHCb collaboration, R. Aaij, A. S. W. Abdelmotteleb et al.

A search for $CP$ violation in $Λ_b^0\rightarrow pK^-$ and $Λ_b^0\rightarrow pπ^-$ decays is presented using the full Run 1 and Run 2 data samples of $pp$ collisions collected with the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. For the Run 2 data sample, the $CP$-violating asymmetries are measured to be $A_{CP}^{pK^-} = (-1.4 \pm 0.7 \pm 0.4)\%$ and $A_{CP}^{pπ^-} = (0.4 \pm 0.9 \pm 0.4)\%$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. Following significant improvements in the evaluation of systematic uncertainties compared to the previous LHCb measurement, the Run 1 dataset is reanalyzed to update the corresponding results. When combining the Run 2 and updated Run 1 measurements, the final results are found to be $A_{CP}^{pK^-} = (-1.1 \pm 0.7 \pm 0.4)\%$ and $A_{CP}^{pπ^-} = (0.2 \pm 0.8 \pm 0.4)\%$, constituting the most precise measurements of these asymmetries to date.

Comprehensive analysis of local and nonlocal amplitudes in the $B^0\rightarrow K^{*0}μ^+μ^-$ decay

LHCb collaboration, R. Aaij, A. S. W. Abdelmotteleb et al.

A comprehensive study of the local and nonlocal amplitudes contributing to the decay $B^0\rightarrow K^{*0}(\to K^+π^-) μ^+μ^-$ is performed by analysing the phase-space distribution of the decay products. The analysis is based on $pp$ collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.4fb$^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment. This measurement employs for the first time a model of both one-particle and two-particle nonlocal amplitudes, and utilises the complete dimuon mass spectrum without any veto regions around the narrow charmonium resonances. In this way it is possible to explicitly isolate the local and nonlocal contributions and capture the interference between them. The results show that interference with nonlocal contributions, although larger than predicted, only has a minor impact on the Wilson Coefficients determined from the fit to the data. For the local contributions, the Wilson Coefficient $C_9$, responsible for vector dimuon currents, exhibits a $2.1σ$ deviation from the Standard Model expectation. The Wilson Coefficients $C_{10}$, $C_{9}'$ and $C_{10}'$ are all in better agreement than $C_{9}$ with the Standard Model and the global significance is at the level of $1.5σ$. The model used also accounts for nonlocal contributions from $B^{0}\to K^{*0}\left[τ^+τ^-\to μ^+μ^-\right]$ rescattering, resulting in the first direct measurement of the $b sττ$ vector effective-coupling $C_{9τ}$.

Ibovespa’s response to the behavior of oil and ore prices during the international crisis caused by COVID-19

Jorge Luis Sánchez Arévalo, Alisson Maxwell Ferreira de Andrade, Elisabeth de Oliveira Vendramin

The systemic risk caused by COVID-19 affected all sectors of the economy, thus showing the vulnerability of some sectors in comparison to others. In this context, the supply shock experienced by the iron ore sector has drawn attention and resulted in a price increase. Linked to this, and in a negative way, oil prices fell due, among other factors, to the price war between producing countries. In this sense, this study analyses the volatility of the Brazilian stock market indicator in relation to the prices of the aforementioned products and the price of the dollar. The results show the importance of the price formation in these markets for the variation of the indicator. The appreciation of Brent oil and iron ore prices on the Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE), in China, caused the Ibovespa indicator to move in the same direction. In addition, in statistical terms, the study highlights the great importance of the exchange rate as a determinant in the variation of the indicator and, consequently, affecting the intention to invest.

Statistical Analysis and Forecasting of Gender Asymmetry Indexes in the Labor Market of the Orenburg Region

L. V. Zolotova, L. V. Portnova

The labor market in Russia and its regions operates in an unstable socio-economic situation, which can contribute to the emergence of gender disproportion. The study of gender asymmetry is considered the most popular direction during periods of “economic shocks”, since this kind of instability increases the inequality of men and women in various spheres of life. The state of turbulence in which the labor market of Russia as a whole and each of its regions is located contributes to the adaptation of each of its segments to new forms of work. This study examines the results of an analysis of the structure and trends in the dynamics of indexes of employment and unemployment of the male and female population in the Orenburg region for 2016-2021. The choice of the time frame is justified by the uneven development of both the world and the Russian economy. Modern economic realities, in which the labor market exists and develops as a country as a whole and its regions, experiencing a number of shocks, determine the scientific novelty of the issues under consideration.Purpose of the study. The main idea of the work done is the possibility of using the methods of economic and statistical analysis to study dynamic differences in gender structures according to various characteristics, development directions that determine gender asymmetry in the labor market of the Orenburg region, and predict its main indexes for the medium term.Materials and methods. The information base of the study was the statistical information of Orenburgstat, which characterizes gender asymmetry in the labor market of the Orenburg region. To achieve this goal, a set of methods of economic and statistical analysis was applied, including the calculation of indexes of the structure and structural differences, dynamics, identifying trends, forecasting, as well as presenting the results of the study using tables and figures.Results. According to the results of the study, an average portrait of a busy and carefree person by gender was compiled. The characteristics of the male and female population in the labor market of the Orenburg region in 2021 compared to 2016 are highlighted. The study of structural differences was carried out according to the criterion of V. Ryabtsev, during which it was noted that there were no significant changes in the structures of employed men and women. A significant level of differences characterizes the age structure of unemployed men and women in 2021 compared to 2016, as well as the structure of unemployed men by level of education. The study made it possible to assert that in the dynamics of indexes characterizing gender inequality in the labor market of the Orenburg region, unstable changes are observed. The study tested the hypothesis of the presence/absence of trends in the time series of indexes characterizing gender asymmetry in the labor market of the region. For this purpose, one of the modifications of the series criterion was used. The assumption that there is no trend in the dynamics series under consideration has not been confirmed, therefore, the trend exists. Taking into account this circumstance, trend models were constructed, among which, according to the best statistical characteristics, secondorder polynomial models were selected. With the help of the selected polynomials of the second degree, it was determined that in the dynamics of employment and unemployment indexes of the male and female population, downward trends of change prevail. Further, their prospective indexes were calculated.Conclusion. The study made it possible to analyze the main vectors that are emerging in the field of employment and unemployment in the regional labor market by gender, and to predict their main indexes for the medium term. In the dynamics of the number of both male and female labor force in the Orenburg region, unstable trends will be observed in the future. The number of women employed in the region’s economy will grow; the number of unemployed women will decrease. In the forecast period, the number of employed men in the economy of the Orenburg region will change under the influence of a downtrend. The number of unemployed men in the period from 2023 to 2025 will tend to decrease.

Analyzing Indonesian SOEs Privatization: A Comparison between the SOEs’ Performance and Privatization Determination

Rafki Rasyid, Syafruddin Karimi, Werry Darta Taifur et al.

This study investigates the privatization situation in Indonesia between 1996 and 2020. This study conducts a comparative analysis to see the impact of privatization on companies’ performance and, with regard to the crisis that occurred with respect to the companies that have been privatized, its economic impact. Furthermore, the determinants of the government’s decision to release its share from state-owned companies are also identified using the regression method. This study found, with regard to the state-owned enterprises in Indonesia, the impact of the economy as there were no differences in the companies’ performance before and during the crisis. This study found that the ability of the company to generate profits declined after privatization, but the company’s efficiency improved. Otherwise, the debt ratio of state-owned companies decreased after the privatization was carried out. Almost the same results were found when comparing the long-term performance with the short-term performance of the privatized SOEs. The determining factors that influenced the Indonesian government’s decision to divest its shares in state-owned companies were Indonesia’s corruption perception index ranking, the company’s ability to generate profits on its sales, and government ownership percentage stock in SOEs.

Measurements of $CP$ asymmetries and branching fraction ratios of $B^-$ decays to two charm mesons

LHCb collaboration, R. Aaij, A. S. W. Abdelmotteleb et al.

The $CP$ asymmetries of seven $B^-$ decays to two charm mesons are measured using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9\text{ fb}^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment. Decays involving a $D^{*0}$ or $D^{*-}_s$ meson are analysed by reconstructing only the $D^0$ or $D^-_s$ decay products. This paper presents the first measurement of $\mathcal{A}^{CP}(B^- \rightarrow D^{*-}_s D^0)$ and $\mathcal{A}^{CP}(B^- \rightarrow D^{-}_s D^{*0})$, and the most precise measurement of the other five $CP$ asymmetries. There is no evidence of $CP$ violation in any of the analysed decays. Additionally, two ratios between branching fractions of selected decays are measured.

Search for $CP$ violation in the phase space of $D^0 \to π^-π^+π^0$ decays with the energy test

LHCb collaboration, R. Aaij, A. S. W. Abdelmotteleb et al.

A search for $CP$ violation in $D^0 \to π^-π^+π^0$ decays is reported, using $pp$ collision data collected by the LHCb experiment from 2015 to 2018 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6$fb^{-1}$. An unbinned model-independent approach provides sensitivity to local $CP$ violation within the two-dimensional phase space of the decay. The method is validated using the Cabibbo-favoured channel $\D^0 \to \K^-π^+π^0$ and background regions of the signal mode. The results are consistent with $CP$ symmetry in this decay.

Examining the effect of credit on monetary policy with Markov regime switching: Evidence from Turkey

İlhan Ali

This paper analyses the effect of credit on monetary policy responses for different regimes in Turkey. To do so, the Taylor rule augmented with the credit gap is estimated by using a Markov regime switching model from January 2006 to December 2019. The empirical findings identify two regimes: the low- and high-interest rate regimes. The prevalence of the former indicates policy authorities’ growth priorities. Furthermore, differing responses across the regimes reflect that the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey has an asymmetric policy stance. In the low-interest rate regime, the monetary policy only significantly responds to inflation. In the high-interest rate regime, both inflation and credit have significant positive impacts on interest rate setting. This indicates that credit conditions affected the tightening of the monetary policy stance in Turkey despite the use of macroprudential tools after the global financial crisis.

Dualism in Science, Theology, and Economics

Blair Fix

I've spent a lot of time on this blog debunking economists' claims about productivity. Usually, I come at the problem from a fairly technical angle, meaning I break down the contradictions involved in economists' methods. Today, I want to try a more philosophical approach. I'm going to talk about dualism — the idea that something can be two things at once.

Test of lepton universality in $b \rightarrow s \ell^+ \ell^-$ decays

LHCb collaboration, R. Aaij, A. S. W. Abdelmotteleb et al.

The first simultaneous test of muon-electron universality using $B^{+}\rightarrow K^{+}\ell^{+}\ell^{-}$ and $B^{0}\rightarrow K^{*0}\ell^{+}\ell^{-}$ decays is performed, in two ranges of the dilepton invariant-mass squared, $q^{2}$. The analysis uses beauty mesons produced in proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector between 2011 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$. Each of the four lepton universality measurements reported is either the first in the given $q^{2}$ interval or supersedes previous LHCb measurements. The results are compatible with the predictions of the Standard Model.

Study of the $B_c^+$ decays into charmonia and three light hadrons

LHCb collaboration, R. Aaij, A. S. W. Abdelmotteleb et al.

Using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9fb^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb detector, seven decay modes of the $B_c^+$ meson into a $J/ψ$ or $ψ(2S)$ meson and three charged hadrons, kaons or pions, are studied. The decays $B_c^+\rightarrow ( ψ(2S) \rightarrow J/ψπ^+ π^-)π^+ $, $B_c^+\rightarrow ψ(2S)π^+π^+π^-$, $B_c^+\rightarrow J/ψK^+π^+π^-$ and $B_c^+\rightarrow K^+K^+K^-$ are observed for the first time, and evidence for the $B_c^+\rightarrow ψ(2S)K^+K^-π^+$ decay is found, where $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ mesons are reconstructed in their dimuon decay modes. The ratios of branching fractions between the different $B_c^+$ decays are reported as well as the fractions of the decays proceeding via intermediate resonances. The results largely support the factorisation approach used for a theoretical description of the studied decays.
