Lady Church in the Christian Imagination

Lora Walsh

How did Lady Church become a theological person and literary figure in patristic, medieval, and early modern texts? In this study, Lora Walsh recovers a feminine figure whose historical prominence has been overlooked. She traces the development of Lady Church in medieval and early modern England, providing new information and interpretations of works by well-known authors, including John Wyclif, William Langland, John Foxe, and John Donne, among others. She also identifies significant changes and previously unrecognized continuities in religious culture from the medieval era into early modernity.  Walsh incorporates literary texts into the field of historical theology, exploring their theological background and identifying the unique contributions of literature to ecclesiological thought. She demonstrates that the feminine image of the Church was not simply a rhetorical convention. Rather, it forms part of a rich tradition that many authors conceptually refined and vividly reimagined over more than a millenium of religious history.

The article demonstrates and discusses the following sources of Eugippius’ Rule: St. Augustine of Hippo (Ordo monasterii and Praeceptum); Rules: Regula quattuor Patrum and Regula Magistri; St. Basil the Great (Regula [a Rufino latine versa]); St. Pachomius the Great (Regula); Novatus Catholicus (Sententia de humilitate et oboedientia et de calcanda superbia); St. John Cassian (Conlationes Patrum and the De institutis coenobiorum); St. Jerome (Epistula 125, 9). In its second part, the article discusses the theological subject matter of the Regula of Eugippius, also pointing out the relevance of its message to both his times and our own.

Inimici nostri: Jews as heretics and heretics as judaizers in Jerome and Augustine

John Y.B. Hood

In their polemical as well as their ostensibly non-polemical writings, SS. Jerome and Augustine refer to the Church’s enemies as an unholy triad: Jews, pagans, and Christian heretics. These inimici, they assert, are linked by their common failure to accept the Gospel of the orthodox Catholic Church, as well as by the root cause of their unbelief: pride, which leads them to resist the truth. In this article, I focus on the links Jerome and Augustine purport to find between Judaism and Christian heresy. I draw from polemical and non-polemical works by both writers, including Jerome’s biblical commentaries and anti-Pelagian treatises, and Augustine’s De Civitate Dei as well as his writings adversus Jews, Donatists, and Pelagians. In addition to identifying the doctrinal commonalities that Jerome and Augustine assert exist between Judaism and Christian heresy, I examine the often-similar rhetorical devices employed by both writers in their denunciations of these inimici. The article concludes by speculating on the possible roots of these denunciations in the authors’ doubts and insecurities, and notes that, paradoxically, Jerome and Augustine’s epistemological doubts regarding divine election led them to retain a measure of hope for their theological enemies, and so to counsel tolerance toward them.

A. Azkerate Garai-Olaun

Religijne motywy w rewolcie Witaliana w 513-515 roku

Stanisław Koczwara

The short of the first twenty years of VI century of Byzantium's history when political changes in Constantinople took place was described in the article The religious motives. The leader of the rebellion indicated two aspects of his pronouncement as the most important ones. They were restoration of the religious union on the East based on resolutions of The Chalcedonian Council and recognition of the leading role of The Apostolic See in the field of guarding religious authenticity. Despite the military defeat Vitalianus' revolt ended with success on the religious field.
