This study explores university social responsibility codes, strategies, and reports by higher education institutions that show their role in building socially responsible organisations to integrate a sustainability paradigm into research, teaching, and governance. The paper applies the content analysis method that systematically examines and interprets data to extract meaningful insights and understand patterns. The authors reviewed the codes of ethics, strategies, and social responsibility reports of 160 universities that have joined the Polish Declaration of University Social Responsibility. The research effort shows that sustainable development is a common aim among Polish higher education institutions. However, codes of ethics, social responsibility strategies, and sustainable development and social responsibility reports are not widespread practices among them. Polish higher education institutions are only beginning to professionalise their approach to social responsibility. This qualitative analysis only examined 160 Polish universities that have joined the Declaration of University Social Responsibility (USR). Because the selection of the sample is subjective, it is essential to cautiously assess the generalisability of the findings of this study. The article organises and systematises knowledge about the USR concept, which currently plays an important role in higher education institutions. Higher education institutions, such as universities, formulate strategies and codes of ethics and undertake initiatives to support sustainable development (SD). These results provide new insights into the possibilities of developing these documents. In practical terms, this study offers suggestions to higher educational institutions on improving their USR strategies, reports, and ethical codes, primarily focusing on adopting an approach centred around sustainable development goals.

Background: Managers can plan strategically based on a rational and/or intuitive approach. In the past, intuition and rationality were seen as opposing approaches, one or the other of which was used. Currently available sources confirm the combination of both approaches as effective, and thus their complementarity. Purpose: The main goal of the paper is to reveal the characteristics of using intuition and rationality in the process of creating the strategic documents of the Ministry of Defence of the Czech Republic (MoD CR). Further, there are two sub-goals: to analyse the proportions, characteristics and consequences of using the revealed ratio of intuition and rationality in the process mentioned. Study design/methodology/approach: The general research design is a qualitative paradigm. The data were collected through a semi-structured questionnaire. The sample amounted to 18 authors of strategic documents of the MoD CR. The data were evaluated using the grounded theory method, which defines the procedures of open and axial coding of the text. The arrangement of relationships between the identified data categories was carried out using a paradigmatic model according to grounded theory. Findings/conclusions: The conclusions confirm the use of a combination of intuition and rationality in the process of creating strategic documents. However, intuition prevails in the ratio of both approaches, which can be the cause of not quite optimal output. Processed strategic documents suffer from some shortcomings (i.e. inconsistency of formal and content aspects, insufficient measurability, objectivity and comparability), which are related to insufficient or incorrect use of exact methods and a systematic approach. Limitations/future research: The conclusions are valid for the MoD CR, specifically for the process of creating strategic documents. It would be useful to compare them with other types of organizations in the state, public and private sectors. The use of intuition and rationality in other processes of strategic management can be examined and compared with the processes of middle and lower management.

In an increasingly globalized economy, organizations are increasingly competing for the best employees who are skilled in professional fields. Employer branding has an important role in helping organizations find new employees and retain existing employees. The goal of this study was to look at the effect of employer branding on organizational commitment and turnover intention in the pharmaceutical industry, as it was moderated by generation. The population sample is made up of Generation X, Y, and Z workers in the pharmaceutical industries in Indonesia. The sampling technique uses a non-probability sampling method with purposive sampling. PLS-SEM was utilized in this study to analyze data from 175 samples. The research results have proven that employer branding increases organizational commitment and decreases turnover intention. Organizational commitment reduces turnover intention. Moreover, the relationship between employer branding and turnover intention might be mediated by organizational commitment. The association between organizational commitment and turnover intention or employer branding and turnover intention cannot be moderated by generation because it has no impact on turnover intention in the pharmaceutical industries. Corporate leaders need to establish and develop employer branding to increase organizational commitment and reduce turnover intentions in the pharmaceutical industry.

Petroleum exploration and production in the Nigeria’s Niger Delta region and export of oil and gas resources by the petroleum sector has substantially improved the nation’s economy over the past five decades. However, activities associated with petroleum exploration, development and production operations have local detrimental and significant impacts on the atmosphere, soils and sediments, surface and groundwater, marine environment and terrestrial ecosystems in the Niger Delta. Discharges of petroleum hydrocarbon and petroleum–derived waste streams have caused environmental pollution, adverse human health effects, socio–economic problems and degradation of host communities in the 9 oil–producing states in the Niger Delta region. Many approaches have been developed for the management of environmental impacts of petroleum production–related activities and several environmental laws have been institutionalized to regulate the Nigerian petroleum industry. However, the existing statutory laws and regulations for environmental protection appear to be grossly inadequate and some of the multinational oil companies operating in the Niger Delta region have failed to adopt sustainable practices to prevent environmental pollution. This review examines the implications of multinational oil companies operations and further highlights some of the past and present environmental issues associated with petroleum exploitation and production in the Nigeria’s Niger Delta. Although effective understanding of petroleum production and associated environmental degradation is importance for developing management strategies, there is a need for more multidisciplinary approaches for sustainable risk mitigation and effective environmental protection of the oil–producing host communities in the Niger Delta.

The paper focuses on the analysis of the impact of technical, organizational and human factors on accident rate in small-sized enterprises. The research was carried out using the authors’ questionnaire. The results were verified using the method of direct interview with elements of observation. The results were compared with the trends prevailing in enterprises of EU countries. The respondents, i.e. production company workers, indicate technical factors as those which most significantly affect the occurrence of accidents at work. However, the assessment of the factors changes with the age of the respondents. Older workers, more often than younger employees, indicate the ones related to man or work organization as the most important factors affecting accidents at work and, consequently, the level of occupational safety. The presented results are a part of a larger whole project the authors of this paper are working on.

Crop-based biogas energy production, in combination with electricity generation under subsidy schemes, is no longer considered a favourable business model for biogas plants. Switching to low-cost or gate fee feedstocks and utilising biogas via alternative pathways could contribute to making existing plants fit for future operations and could open up new space for further expansion of the biogas sector. The aim of this study was to combine a holistic and interdisciplinary approach for both the biogas production side and the utilisation side to evaluate the impact of integrating the biogas sector with waste management systems and energy systems operating with a high share of renewable energy sources. The geospatial availability of residue materials from agriculture, industry and municipalities was assessed using QGIS software for the case of Northern Croatia with the goal of replacing maize silage in the operation of existing biogas plants. Furthermore, the analysis included positioning new biogas plants, which would produce renewable gas. The overall approach was evaluated through life cycle assessment using SimaPro software to quantify the environmental benefits and identify the bottlenecks of the implemented actions. The results showed that the given feedstocks could replace 212 GWh of biogas from maize silage in the relevant region and create an additional 191 GWh of biomethane in new plants. The LCA revealed that the proposed measures would contribute to the decarbonisation of natural gas by creating environmental benefits that are 36 times greater compared to a business-as-usual concept. The presented approach could be of interest to stakeholders in the biogas sector anywhere in the world to encourage further integration of biogas technologies into energy and environmental transitions.

Purpose We examine whether the fraud firms are engaged in real earnings management and accrual earnings management prior to the fraud year in the Malaysian context. Design/methodology/approach Our sample comprises of 65 financial statement fraud and 65 non-fraud firms over a period of eight years from 2001 to 2008. Findings Using the abnormal cash flow from operations (CFO) and abnormal production costs as the proxies for real earnings management, we find that financial statement fraud firms engage in manipulating production costs during preceding two years of the fraud event. However, our results show that financial fraud firms engage in manipulating CFO prior to the fraud event. Additionally, we find that financial statement fraud firms prefer to manipulate earnings using accruals relative to real earnings prior to the fraud year. Originality/value Our results demonstrate that real earnings management is more aggressive in financial statement fraud firms compared to the non-fraud firms in the four years prior to fraud.
