Zachary Leader, Ellmann’s Joyce: The Biography of a Masterpiece and Its Maker
James Woodall
When Zachary Leader’s book was announced, I thought hard about its precedents: books about books—not literary criticism but accounts of the gritty, human production of really famous tomes. A niche genre. But then Boswell’s Life of Johnson came to mind and a quick Google search revealed Richard B. Sher’s 2023 study of precisely that: Making Boswell’s Life of Johnson. I for one would love to read it.

Cancer-related identity and advanced old age – analysis of prostate cancer survivors after radical prostatectomy over the age of 75
Matthias Jahnen, Charlotte Bierwirth, Valentin H. Meissner
et al.
Abstract Background The struggle to incorporate the experience of suffering from PCa in their biography can be evident in men affected by PCa even years after the initial cancer diagnosis. Aim of this study was to assess the cancer-related identity and associated factors in men over 75 years affected by PCa and treated with radical prostatectomy to improve the understanding of cancer-related self-perception in older men. Methods 2,379 on average 82.2 ± 3.9 year-old prostate cancer survivors with a mean follow-up of 17.9 ± 3.7 after radical prostatectomy were asked to choose one of 5 cancer-related identities (“patient”, “victim”, “someone who has had cancer”, “cancer survivor,” and “cancer conqueror”). Associations with clinical data, aging-related factors (frailty, comorbidities, loneliness), and psychological factors were assessed. Results Most men identified with the neutral terms “someone who has had cancer” (45.7%) and patient (27.0%), which was associated with primarily clinical characteristics. Identification with negatively connoted cancer-related identities was less common (“cancer survivor” (15.7%), “victim” (2.1%)) and was associated with primarily aging-related and psychological factors. Identification as a “cancer survivor” was associated with more self-reported comorbidities (OR: 1.09 [1.01 – 1.17]) and symptoms of depression (OR: 1.71 [1.20 – 2.45]). Identification as a victim was associated with severe loneliness (OR: 5.09 [2.39 – 10.85]). The positively connoted cancer-related identity “cancer conqueror” (9.5%) was associated with a higher quality of life (OR: 1.41 [1.28 – 1.57]). Conclusions The cancer-related identity in long-term PCa survivors of advanced old age varies widely. Especially negatively connoted cancer-related identities reflect the subjective disease experience, the overall health status, and the lack of a social support system. Even years after the primary diagnosis and treatment, assessment of the cancer-related identity can identify men who are affected most by their cancer experience and might need further psycho-oncological assistance.
The Problem of an Ideal Family in I. A. Goncharov’s Trilogy
Vladimir I. Melnik
Almost every work about I. A. Goncharov’s creative work talks about love and mentions the family relationships of the heroes. However, there is still no idea about the “philosophy of family” in Goncharov’s works and the biographical roots of this significant problem for the writer. In “The Same Old Story,” “Oblomov,” and “Cliff,” a whole typology of family relationships appeared in a wide variety of variants. However, Goncharov does not show ideal family relationships. The writer depicts “unions” of men and women, either unhappy or not completely happy. This article attempts to consider this phenomenon of the writer from various points of view and to find the root cause in the character and biography of Goncharov. The novelist placed extremely high demands on the concept of an ideal family and brought a broad philosophical and cultural context into his thoughts about it. The most “family” novel in his work is “Oblomov,” in which he reveals the “philosophy of family” in the pathetic and dramatic mode. This philosophy stems from the worldview and life experience of Goncharov, who never created his own family.
Le bracelet de Taga
Elric Geraudie
Collected in 1904, during a colonial criminal case, Taga’s bracelet, a wooden piece from northern Vanuatu, became part of Louis Joseph Bouge’s collection, adding to its owner’s prestige. In this context, it seems to have been part of an exchange of gifts on the occasion of the erudite collector’s marriage to Emma Quille. Much later, the bracelet returned to the collection of its first owner, then was bequeathed by Louis Joseph Bouge’s widow to the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Chartres. When the object’s journey is examined from a biographical angle, a succession of social roles emerges, raising questions about the singularisation of objects, their agency as “trophies” and their place among non-agonistic gifts.
EXAMINING THE REFORMIST THOUGHTS OF AL-TAHIR IBN ‘ASHUR
Hassan Suleimān, Alwi Alatas, Saheed Abdullah Busari
Al-Sheikh Muḥammad al-Tāhir ibn ‘Āshūr, who lived between 1296 AH (1879 AD) and 1393 AH (1973 AD), is considered one of the eminent intellectuals of the modern era and an influential figure among the generation of writers and scholars. He is described as the pioneer of Maqasid thought in contemporary jurisprudence and has developed in this regard the book Maqāṣid al-Sharī‘ah al-Islāmiyyah (The Objectives of the Islamic Shariah), as well as his famous book of Quranic exegesis al-Taḥrīr wa al-Tanwīr. To this effect, this study identifies the reformist features of al-Tāhir ibn ‘Āshūr in his books and writings that brought about a renaissance in various branches of knowledge such as Shariah, tafsīr, and education. A review of the literature suggests that al-Tāhir ibn ‘Āshūr’s reformist ideas have not received sufficient academic attention. Therefore, the study raised some questions, including: Who is Tāhir ibn ‘Āshūr? What were Tāhir ibn ‘Āshūr’s reformist viewpoints, and how did he propagate them out, most particularly in education? The study follows the descriptive approach to trace Ibn ‘Āshūr’s biography as well as the analytical approach in discussing the thought of al-Tāhir ibn ‘Āshūr on the scientific and educational level. The study concludes that Muḥammad al-Ṭāhir ibn ‘Āshūr (may Allah have mercy on him) is one of the eminent intellectuals in the Islamic world, whose innovative views and great writings came as a revolution against tradition and inertia and a revolution against intellectual inaction and civilizational stagnation.
Polish First Infantry Division of Interned and Exiled Poles: From Its Formation to the “Battle of Lenino” (May–October 1943)
Aleksei Yu. Bezugol'nyi
The article is devoted to the political, military, and demographic aspects of the formation of the Polish 1st Tadeusz Kościuszko Infantry Division in the Soviet Union in May 1943. It examines such factors as the number and composition of the contingent of Polish exiled settlers and prisoners of war relocated to the inland regions of the USSR after 1939; the first experience of the formation of the Polish army under the command of W. Anders in 1942–43; the efforts of the Soviet special services to select the leadership for the division and prepare the political ground for its formation. The characteristics of the personality, professional qualities, and political position of the division commander Zygmunt Berling as well as the facts from his biography related to cooperation with the Soviet authorities are also provided. The article analyzes the efforts of the Soviet side aimed at the international legitimization of the Polish 1st Infantry Division, associated with the scrupulous reproduction of the already established Polish military tradition. Much attention in the article is paid to the political and military circumstances of the baptism of fire of the Polish Division, which was given the name “the Battle of Lenino” in Polish historiography. It is shown that despite the rather dubious results of the two-day battle, Soviet diplomacy obtained an opportunity to demonstrate the Soviet-Polish “brotherhood in arms” at the Tehran Conference and received an additional reason for declaring its claim to the post-war structure of Poland. It is noted that the experience of formation of the Polish 1st Tadeusz Kościuszko Infantry Division was recognized as successful and became the first step in the formatting of Polish troops, which was rapidly gaining pace with the assistance of the Soviet Union.

The deletion is a common language phenomenon in which human languages are involved. Speakers tend to delete some repetitive elements of speech. They are more consistent and clear in Arabic to the tendency of Arabs to be brief and to speak fluently. We have touched upon the manifestations of the deletion in the book of Durat al-Mufla'id and the interpretation of the hadeeth of the scribe (T 420H) in two sections: the deletion of the nun in (tak, takn), and (we, My words (obey, and be able), and (taken, and taken) in the similar verses in the Koran. We have reached some good results. Note that this research is derived and extracted from the master thesis, entitled "The Book of Durat al-Muhallam and the Interpretation of the Writings of the Scapegoat" (T 420H).

The French staff material from Johann Georg Pasch
Olivier Dupuis
Johann Georg Pasch was a very prolific author who published a large number of books during the third quarter of the seventeenth century. Some of these included physical exercises with a long staff and presented by Pasch himself as coming from France. Among all the known editions, four different versions can be isolated; this offers the possibility to study the filiation of the edition process. This study is combined with a textual criticism of the material, beginning with a comprehensive biography from the author and finishing with the questioning of the French origin.

Learning from eponyms: George F. Odland and Odland bodies
Rajiv Joshi
Odland bodies (lamellar) bodies are small sub-cellular structures of size 200-300 nm that are present in the upper spinous and granular cell layers of the epidermis. These act as processing and repository areas for lipids that contribute to the epidermal permeability barrier. They also contain proteases, cathepsin D, kallikrein and other proteins including corneo-desmosins. Recent information also credits them with a role in the local innate immune response as they contain beta 2 defensins, which are anti-microbial peptides with potent activity against Gram-negative bacteria and candida. Odland bodies are important for maintaining homeostasis of the epidermis and are involved in epidermal permeability barrier function, desquamation of keratinocytes, formation of the cornified envelope and in local anti-microbial immunity. This article reviews the structure and functions of these bodies with a brief biography of George F. Odland who first described these bodies in 1960 and whose name is eponymically associated with them.
A Romanian Jew in Hollywood: Edward G. Robinson
Moldovan Raluca
The present study aims to investigate the contribution that actor Edward G. Robinson brought to the American film industry, beginning with his iconic role as gangster Little Caesar in Mervyn Le Roy’s 1931 production, and continuing with widely-acclaimed parts in classic film noirs such as Double Indemnity, The Woman in the Window and Scarlet Street. Edward G. Robinson was actually a Romanian Jew, born Emmanuel Goldenberg in Bucharest, in 1893, a relatively little known fact nowadays. By examining his biography, filmography and his best-known, most successful films (mentioned above), I show that Edward G. Robinson was one of classical Hollywood’s most influential actors; for instance, traits of his portrayal of Little Caesar (one of the very first American gangster films) can be found in almost all subsequent cinematic gangster figures, from Scarface to Vito Corleone. In the same vein, the doomed noir characters he played in Fritz Lang’s The Woman in the Window and Scarlet Street are still considered by film critics today to be some of the finest, most nuanced examples of noir heroes. Therefore, the main body of my article will be dedicated to a more detailed analysis of these films, while the introductory section will trace his biography and discuss some of his better-known films, such as Confessions of a Nazi Spy and Key Largo. The present study highlights Edward G. Robinson’s merits and impact on the cinema industry, proving that this diminutive Romanian Jew of humble origins was indeed something of a giant during Hollywood’s classical era.

Augustinas Voldemaras: intelektualinės biografijos eskizas ir kai kurie tarpdisciplininės orientacijos pavyzdžiai
Aurelijus Gieda
Santrauka. Šio straipsnio tikslas – išryškinti tuos A. Voldemaro intelektualinės biografijos kontekstus, kuriuose itin stipriai persipina tam tikros tarpdisciplininės aspiracijos. Straipsnyje žvelgiama į ankstyvą A. Voldemaro susidomėjimą istorijos teorijos ir metodologijos problematika, į A. Voldemaro intelektualinius impulsus Peterburgo ir Permės laikotarpiais (1900–1917), į akademinius mokytojus, kuriuos vienas pirmųjų lietuvių Peterburgo universiteto docentų vėliau ne kartą pagarbiai prisimindavo.
Key words: Voldemaras, intellectual biography, theory of history, interdisciplinarity, integrated knowledge, Centre International de Synthèse.
ABSTRACT
AUGUSTINAS VOLDEMARAS: A SKETCH OF INTELLECTUAL BIOGRAPHYAND CERTAIN EXAMPLES OF INTERDISCIPLINARY ORIENTATION
The article takes a look at one of the most controversial personalities of inter-war Lithuania. Augustinas Voldemaras (1883–1942) was educated in classical philology, had a keen interest in universal history and the history of Lithuania and an additional concern in philosophical and sociological issues. A consistent search for integrated and synthetic knowledge, openness to philosophical questions and his disposition to polylogical cooperation of disciplines are some of the principal moments in his intellectual biography. Therefore, the present study attempts to highlight certain contexts of Voldemaras’ intellectual biography, witnessing the tightly intertwining interdisciplinarity, aspirations of some type.
While a student, Voldemaras found himself in the environment where the problems of ancient history were addressed at the European level and where attempts were made to bring the research on the classical era carried out in pre-revolutionary Russia closer to Germany, being the leader in this sphere.
The openness to interdisciplinary search, postulates of integrated and synthetic knowledge that manifested over a long-term, not to mention his philosophical quests and attempts in the field of history, brought Voldemaras closer to the prominent European philosophical movement Centre International de Synthèse founded by Henri Berr, linked by special ties with the formation of one of the most outstanding 20th century schools of history The Annales School. Voldemaras belonged to the History Section of Henri Berr’s Centre International de Synthèse, thus finding a niche among the distinguished representatives of social sciences and the humanities of that time. There is no wonder that in this respect, Voldemaras established himself in Lithuanian historiography as one of the pioneer figures attempting to overcome the disciplinary isolation of sciences, their one-sided empiricism or the lack of a broader approach towards history.
The attention paid by Voldemaras to the philosophical issues of identification of history as a science, deliberate attribution of an important role to theory in social sciences and the humanities, the highlight of interdisciplinary initiatives in these sciences are what add the aspect of appeal to his intellectual biography. Voldemaras himself becomes one of the most interesting Lithuanian intellectuals of the first half of the 20th century.
