From Verses to Action: Project-Based Learning in Al-Qur'an Hadith Subjects to Foster Understanding of Verses and Hadiths on Environmental Sustainability and Ecological Awareness in Madrasahs

Khalid Mawardi Khalid Mawardi, Moh. Ali

Environmental sustainability is a critical issue that must be instilled from an early age through education, including in Qur’an-Hadith instruction. However, learning in many madrasahs still relies on conventional, cognitively oriented approaches. This condition forms the main problem of the present study, as students’ understanding of Qur’anic and Hadith texts related to the environment remains decontextualized, disconnected from real-life situations, and fails to shape ecological attitudes and behaviors. This study aims to explore the implementation of the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model in enhancing students’ comprehension and concern for Islamic values regarding environmental preservation. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The research was conducted at MA YSPIS Rembang. The findings indicate that PjBL fosters active student engagement through real-life project such as creating a school garden, conducting digital awareness campaigns, and designing educational pamphlets. These activites enabled students to meaningfully connect Qur’anic and Hadith teaching with real-world environmental issues, fostering a sense of ecologial responsibility. The study concludes that PjBL is effective in internalizing Islamic environmental ethics and increasing students’ awareness and commitment to practicing these values in their daily lives.

Is it open access if registration is required to obtain scientific content?

Yuki Yamada, Andreas Nishikawa-Pacher, Jaime A. Teixeira da Silva

Some journals require users to register before accessing a scientific paper, despite labelling that content as open access (OA) and free-of-charge. We refer to such cases as members-only OA (MOOA), which we contend is not ‘free’ since users are forced to ‘pay’ with personal data. Scholarly content may be accessible via MOOA to either the in-browser text (HTML) or to the archival-friendly version (PDF), or both. We suggest a four-tier typology to capture the degree of openness based on this observation. We believe that technical guidelines of OA implementation should not permit MOOA.

The contribution of authors from low- and middle-income countries to top-tier mental health journals

Joseph El Khoury, Riwa Kanj, Lynn Adam et al.

Background: Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) have been consistently under-represented in the pool of contributors to academic journals on health. For the past two decades, prominent voices within the psychiatric profession have called for better representation of LMICs in the interest of advancing the understanding of mental health globally and benefiting health systems in these countries. Objective: To investigate the absolute and relative representation of authors affiliated to institutes from LMICs in the most influential journals on mental health in 2019.Method: Thirty top-ranking journals on mental health based on Scimago Journal Rank were selected, and all papers other than correspondence and letters to the editor published in those journals in 2019 were examined to extract the country of affiliation of each of their authors and their position (corresponding author, first author, second author). Results: Of the 4022 articles examined, 3720 articles (92.5%) were written exclusively by authors from high-income countries (HICs); 302 (7.5%) featured one or more authors from a LMIC along with those from HICs; 91 (2.2%) featured authors only from one LMIC; and only 3 (0.07%) featured authors from more than one LMICs but without any co-author from a HIC. The ratio of articles by contributors from LMICs to all the articles published in 2019 in a given journal ranged from 0% to 19%. Of 1855 individual contributors from 45 LMICs, 1050 (56%) were from China. Conclusion: Despite the growth of the global health movement and frequent calls for academic inclusivity, LMICs were significantly under-represented among the authors of papers published in top-ranking journals on mental health in 2019.

Simplify manuscript submission and optimize authors’ resources by eliminating formatting and cover letters

Jaime Teixeira da Silva

Academics are under constant pressure to optimize their time. Formatting requirements imposed on academics by journals or editors during initial manuscript submission may waste precious time, energy, and financial resources, especially if a paper is desk-rejected, and even more so when there are multiple rejections. Formatting, which does not reflect a manuscript’s academic quality, should not be a requirement during initial submission, but only after a paper has passed peer review and been approved for publication. Several publishers offer a formatting-free option during initial submission, allowing academics to optimize their time and energy.

The problem of village fund management in 2015 and until 2018, the budget of village funds from the central government to South Sulawesi has reached a total of Rp.5.7 trillion spread over 2,255 villages. With that much budget, it should be a trigger for the performance of village officials to increase development as mandated by Law Number 6 of 2014 concerning Villages (Village Law. But in its development, the abundant village funds were prone to be misused. Based on ICW monitoring since from 2015 to 2018, cases of corruption in village funds have increased from year to year and there have been at least 181 cases of corruption in village funds with 184 suspects of corruption and a loss of Rp. 40.6 billion. Increasing abuse of village funds has also occurred in South Sulawesi, namely 22 cases have been recorded with state losses of 3.4 billion, so it is deemed necessary to take efforts through preemptive and preventive patterns so that misuse of village funds is not repeated in various regions, particularly in Baji Mangngai Village, Mandai District, Maros Regency. we make a legal study, as it is believed that jurisprudence ha dir in an effort to provide legal problem solving.

Celebrating Excellence [Editorial]

M. El-Hawary

October 2018 IEEE SyStEmS, man, & CybErnEtICS magazInE 3 Celebrating Excellence T he IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society (SMCS) community felt great pride when it learned that Dr. Dimitar Filev was elected as fellow of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) for contributions to automotive re search and practice in the fields of intelligent information and control systems. This distinction is one of the highest professiona l honors accorded an engineer. Members have distinguished themselves in business and academic management, in technical positions, as uni versity faculty, and as leaders in government and private engineering organizations. Members are elected to NAE membership by their peers (current NAE members). Along the same lines, we also learned that the 2017 IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Leaning Systems Outstanding Paper Award was granted to Chen et al. [1] at the Awards Banquet of the IEEE 2018 World Congress on Computational Intelligence. Congratulations to C.L. Philip Chen and Fei-Yue Wang! Additionally, SMC Awards Committee Chair Prof. Ljiljana Trajkovic issued an open call seeking nominations for the SMCS awards: http://www . ieeesmc.org/about-smcs/awards. SMCS awards are broad ranging, including the prestigious Norbert Wiener and the Lotfi A. Zadeh Pioneer awards. There are no eligibility restrictions for either award. Serving on awards and recognitions committees not only raises one’s appreciation of excellence in our midst but also alerts a person to the importance of raising awareness of the best contributors and their work in areas of interest to their technical community. Over the past four years, IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Magazine has offered articles profiling highly visible members of our SMC community and their technical work. The July 2018 issue contained a six-page feature article celebrating the technical contributions of Dr. Peng-Shi, the well-regarded professor at the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of the University of Adelaide, Australia. The article was coordinated by Prof. Choon Ki Ahn, who is a well-known engineering educator and Crimson Professor of Excellence, School of Electrical Engineering, Korea University, Seoul. At the time I wrote this editorial, Prof. Ahn was guest editing a special section of IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Magazine focusing on Markovian jump systems for the January 2019 issue. The magazine is preparing several special sections celebrating the achievements of some of our colleagues in areas of interest to SMC. Each section consists of two parts, with the first containing an extended biography of the subject of the section and testimonials by past and present students, collaborators, adherents, and colleagues who witnessed new contributions evolve. The second part includes up to three technical articles of a tutorial and or review nature on areas of expertise of the celebrant. This is designed to raise our awareness of developments at the forefront of our field. Administrative/leadership achievements appear to be less tractable than those of the technical variety. Naturally, testimonials by Society leadership speaking to the impact of the celebrant’s efforts will be an integral part of the section. Examples include new educational programs, spearheading a new publication/society, and the rejuvenation of an important area of study. A special section will include not only a historical narrative of the evolution of the celebrated achievement but also testimonials by those who were impacted by the innovation. I am looking forward to your suggestions of colleagues whom you believe have made lasting contributions to our profession. Let me hear from you on these issues and how this magazine can serve you better.

Szkolnictwo wyższe – potrzeba całościowej reformy

Andrzej Jajszczyk

Postulat selektywnego charakteru deregulacji w szkolnictwie wyższym

W ślad za odnotowaniem znaczenia konstytucyjnej zasady autonomii uczelni zaprezentowano postulowane relacje w odniesieniu do kompetencji regulacyjnych w układzie: ustawa – statut uczelni. W podsumowaniu zwrócono uwagę, że wnioskowana deregulacja z ograniczeniami wpisuje się w pożądane uwarunkowania rozwojowe instrumentarium prawnego w obszarze governance w szkolnictwie wyższym. W Dodatku przywołano fragmenty dokumentów podkreślających znaczenie dobrych praktyk w sferze stanowienia prawa dotyczącego szkolnictwa wyższego i nauki.
