Epilessia come segno di selezione vittimaria. Girard e Dostoevskij

Valentina Vignotto

Dal doppio all’unità (1963).

Rhetoric and psychology: the interdisciplinary challenge of conspiracy theories

Lucie Donckier de Donceel

Conspiracy theories are now central to our democratic societies, the academic world, and civil society. All seem to agree that we should be able to prevent the presence and spread of conspiracy theories in the public sphere. While this objective is generally recognized, the way to achieve it remains unclear. Like others, we believe that interdisciplinarity is one possible answer. However, this path presents several challenges, the first of which is mutual understanding. In this article, we examine the book of Iacone, Loria, and Meini on conspiracy (2023), to show how the psychological and rhetorical approaches to conspiracy theories can dialogue and understand each other.

Development of a Codebook of Online Anti-Vaccination Rhetoric to Manage COVID-19 Vaccine Misinformation

Brian Hughes, C. Miller-Idriss, R. Piltch-Loeb et al.

Vaccine hesitancy (delay in obtaining a vaccine, despite availability) represents a significant hurdle to managing the COVID-19 pandemic. Vaccine hesitancy is in part related to the prevalence of anti-vaccine misinformation and disinformation, which are spread through social media and user-generated content platforms. This study uses qualitative coding methodology to identify salient narratives and rhetorical styles common to anti-vaccine and COVID-denialist media. It organizes these narratives and rhetorics according to theme, imagined antagonist, and frequency. Most frequent were narratives centered on 'corrupt elites' and rhetorics appealing to the vulnerability of children. The identification of these narratives and rhetorics may assist in developing effective public health messaging campaigns, since narrative and emotion have demonstrated persuasive effectiveness in other public health communication settings.

Beyond Student as User: Rhetoric, Multimodality, and User-Centered Design

Dawn S. Opel, Jacqueline Rhodes

Abstract User-centered design (UCD) as a concept has begun to enter composition studies, particularly through scholar-teachers of technical communication. We question further incorporation—specifically, the collision course of industry-driven language such as “efficiency” and “expediency” and the potential positioning of students as “users” in the composition classroom. We argue that this positioning places us in unproductive opposition to multimodal composition. Rather than a wholesale incorporation of UCD into the composition classroom, we outline a “theory + play” approach that combines scholarship in rhetoric, speculative design, and multimodal composition. This approach, we argue, better aligns with the political and social investments of Johnson’s (1998) theory of user-centered technology, in which our students are critical makers and engaged citizens in the public sphere.

Writing and Rhetoric and/as Posthuman Practice

Casey Boyle

This article examines the role of reflective practice in rhetoric and composition scholarship and argues for reconsidering practice through posthumanism. It (re)introduces posthumanism as a productive frame for considering rhetorical training in a networked age. In place of reflective practice, the article develops the concept of "posthuman practice" as a serial and material activity for rhetorical training. The article concludes by reconsidering metacognition and how reframing rhetoric as a posthuman practice could affect rhetorical pedagogy and ethics.

The Discourse of a Historian and Administrator in Yevgeny Feoktistov’s Notes from What Has Been Heard and Seen

Yelena N. Penskaya

There is no unambiguous perspective on Russia’a cultural and political processes of the second half of the 19th century. Their patterns are largely approached through the lens of the key figures that had a determining influence at a relevant period. Yevgeny Feoktistov was a writer, a journalist, a staff member of the magazines Sovremennik and Otechestvennye Zapiski, the editor of Russkaya Rech and Journal of the Ministry of National Enlightenment (1871–1883), later a censor, the privy councillor (since January 1, 1883), the head of the Central Administration for Printing Press for almost 13 years (1883–1896) (Russia’s censor-in-chief), a senator (from May 23, 1896 until his death), and part of Russia’s administrative elite. He came an impressive way of personal growth that brought him from the ranks of active liberals and Otechestvennye Zapiski journalists to the position of Russia’s censor-in-chief, who signed the order to close that same magazine twenty years later. His biography is partly captured in Ivan Goncharov’s novel The Same Old Story. This article investigates the modifications of linguistic peculiarities in Feoktistov’s essays and statements and draws his linguistic portrait, which doesn’t only explain the patterns of his behavior and everyday style but also sheds light on the shady sides of the events that Russia witnessed in the 1860s–1890s and shapes new optics of the elite circles Feoktistov was part of.

Alle origini del romanzo aziendale. Lessico e narrazione in La morte in banca di Giuseppe Pontiggia

Alessandro Ceteroni

Desiderio e scrittura in "The Real Life of Sebastian Knight" di Vladimir Nabokov

Valeria Invernizzi

This paper examines, from a psychoanalytic standpoint, the intersection between identity and writing in the novel The Real Life of Sebastian Knight (1941) by Vladimir Nabokov. In particular, in the wake of Freud and Lacan, the following contribution will take the notions of desire, signifier, and the process of sublimation involved in artistic creation as interpretative devices. The main focus of the analysis will be the relationship between the two half-brothers of the novel, V (the narrator) and Sebastian. First, I will show that Sebastian Knight holds the role of the object of desire for the characters who have established a close relationship with him and, in particular, for V. Secondly, the paper will be devoted to the analysis of the trauma experienced by the characters because of Sebastian's death, with a particular focus on the narrator's mourning through writing (the fictional biography we read in the novel); in the end, I will give evidence of the so-called signifier’s fallacy, crucial episodes in which the narrator can experience an insight into the truth of desire. Because of the not negligible question of the fictional paternity of The Real Life and the equally essential matter of V’s ‘stylistic touch’, metaliterary aspects of the novel will also be part of the following reading of the text.

Eithan Orkibi

Since the 1960s, there has been an active and distinct research field within rhetorical studies in the United States, which explores the “rhetoric of social movements”. Researchers affiliated with this stream have staged from the outset a rich and structured debate dealing with meta-theoretical issues related to the scientific responsibility of the researcher and the social role of the research in the context of protest and collective action. This article explores the evolution of this debate, in which the participants have initially questioned the relevance of the scientific ethos of contemporary rhetorical theory, and aspired to redefine the responsibility of the researcher with regard to the social dynamics in the public sphere. Subsequently, researchers in the rhetoric of social movements discussed the dialectical relations between rhetorical analysis and social movements, i.e. between theory and practice, and therefore aspired to define the social commitment of specialists in the rhetoric of social movements both as researchers and teachers. The article describes this debate and discusses its contribution to the evolution of rhetorical theory on the one hand, and to the ongoing thinking about the scientific and social commitment of the researcher vis-a-vis processes and practice of social change on the other.
