"Is There Anything Else?'': Examining Administrator Influence on Linguistic Features from the Cookie Theft Picture Description Cognitive Test
Changye Li, Zhecheng Sheng, Trevor Cohen
et al.
Alzheimer's Disease (AD) dementia is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that negatively impacts patients' cognitive ability. Previous studies have demonstrated that changes in naturalistic language samples can be useful for early screening of AD dementia. However, the nature of language deficits often requires test administrators to use various speech elicitation techniques during spontaneous language assessments to obtain enough propositional utterances from dementia patients. This could lead to the ``observer's effect'' on the downstream analysis that has not been fully investigated. Our study seeks to quantify the influence of test administrators on linguistic features in dementia assessment with two English corpora the ``Cookie Theft'' picture description datasets collected at different locations and test administrators show different levels of administrator involvement. Our results show that the level of test administrator involvement significantly impacts observed linguistic features in patient speech. These results suggest that many of significant linguistic features in the downstream classification task may be partially attributable to differences in the test administration practices rather than solely to participants' cognitive status. The variations in test administrator behavior can lead to systematic biases in linguistic data, potentially confounding research outcomes and clinical assessments. Our study suggests that there is a need for a more standardized test administration protocol in the development of responsible clinical speech analytics frameworks.
Optimal Duration of Reserve Capacity Ancillary Services for Distributed Energy Resources
Lorenzo Zapparoli, Blazhe Gjorgiev, Giovanni Sansavini
The increasing integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) into power systems presents opportunities and challenges for ancillary services (AS) provision. Technical requirements of existing AS (i.e., duration, reliability, ramp rate, and lead time) have been designed for traditional generating units, making their provision by DER aggregates particularly challenging. This paper proposes a method to design the duration of reserve capacity AS products considering the operational constraints of DERs and the temporal dynamics of system imbalances. The optimal product duration is determined by maximizing product availability and aligning the supply profile with the system's balancing needs. We apply the methodology to a realistic Swiss low-voltage network with a diverse DER portfolio. The results reveal that (i) shorter product durations maximize average availability and (ii) long product durations improve the alignment with system balancing needs. This paper offers valuable insights for system operators to design AS products tailored for DER participation.
Organisational justice moderates the link between leadership, work engagement and innovation work behaviour
Rahmat Sabuhari, Rusman Soleman, Marwan Man Soleman
et al.
Regional civil servants in Indonesia, especially in the eastern regions, are now required to exhibit innovative work behavior (IWB) as mandated by national regulations. While transformational leadership (TFL) and work engagement (WE) are believed to foster such behavior, the impact and the moderating role of organizational justice (OJ) remain underexplored. This study addresses that gap by examining how TFL and WE contribute to IWB development within the context of public sector work, with OJ potentially moderating these relationships. This study aimed to determine the direct influence of TFL, WE, and OJ on IWB and to analyze the role of OJ as a moderating variable. This research was conducted in the eastern region of Indonesia, especially North Maluku Province, in various regional apparatus organizations. and a random sample of 500 people was taken. This study used Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) regression analysis as a data analysis method to test the causal relationship and moderation effects of each hypothesis. The study findings reveal that while TFL and WE directly influence IWB, OJ neither has a direct effect nor serves as a moderating variable. These findings offer theoretical and practical contributions to local government organizations in Indonesia, emphasizing the importance of leadership and engagement in enhancing innovative behavior at work. This study extends and enhances the development of social exchange theory based on civil servants' IWB. Furthermore, this study expands the theoretical perspective by examining how TFL, WE, and OJ influence innovative work behavior practices to improve employee innovative behaviour. Finally, this study empirically examines the moderating impact of organizational justice on the relationship between TFL and WE on IWB.

Personal Data Transfers to Non-EEA Domains: A Tool for Citizens and An Analysis on Italian Public Administration Websites
Lorenzo Laudadio, Antonio Vetrò, Riccardo Coppola
et al.
Six years after the entry into force of the GDPR, European companies and organizations still have difficulties complying with it: the amount of fines issued by the European data protection authorities is continuously increasing. Personal data transfers are no exception. In this work we analyse the personal data transfers from more than 20000 Italian Public Administration (PA) entities to third countries. We developed "Minos", a user-friendly application which allows to navigate the web while recording HTTP requests. Then, we used the back-end of Minos to automate the analysis. We found that about 14% of the PAs websites transferred data out of the European Economic Area (EEA). This number is an underestimation because only visits to the home pages were object of the analysis. The top 3 destinations of the data transfers are Amazon, Google and Fonticons, accounting for about the 70% of the bad requests. The most recurrent services which are the object of the requests are cloud computing services and content delivery networks (CDNs). Our results highlight that, in Italy, a relevant portion of public administrations websites transfers personal data to non EEA countries. In terms of technology policy, these results stress the need for further incentives to improve the PA digital infrastructures. Finally, while working on refinements of Minos, the version here described is openly available on Zenodo: it can be helpful to a variety of actors (citizens, researchers, activists, policy makers) to increase awareness and enlarge the investigation.
Self-disclosure and trust in the shared economy: a cross-cultural comparison
Peter Broeder
Airbnb is one of the fastest-growing businesses within the sharing economy. In this online marketplace, hosts can list their spare rooms, apartments, or houses as accommodation for Airbnb guests in return for money. Since customers tend to be careful when booking a stranger's house, trust is one of the most important elements of Airbnb. One concrete way of establishing trust is self-disclosure. This study explored online marketplaces such as Airbnb and their users with a framework on how self-disclosure in personal descriptions can be used to increase booking intention. An online experimental survey with two conditions was conducted (implicit vs. explicit host self-disclosure). There were 129 Dutch participants and 71 Chinese participants from China. Contrary to our expectations, implicit language in self-disclosure by the Airbnb host led to more trust than explicit language. Airbnb guests from the Netherlands had higher booking intentions and more trust in the Airbnb host after reading an implicit self-disclosure compared to guests from China. These cultural differences disappeared with the explicit self-disclosure profile.

Did Private Election Administration Funding Advantage Democrats in 2020?
Apoorva Lal, Daniel M Thompson
Private donors contributed more than $350 million to local election officials to support the administration of the 2020 election. Supporters argue these grants were neutral and necessary to maintain normal election operations during the pandemic, while critics worry these grants mostly went to Democratic strongholds and tilted election outcomes. These concerns have led twenty-four states to restrict private election grants. How much did these grants shape the 2020 presidential election? To answer this question, we collect administrative data on private election administration grants and election outcomes. We then use new advances in synthetic control methods to compare presidential election results and turnout in counties that received grants to counties with identical average presidential election results and turnout before 2020. While counties that favor Democrats were much more likely to apply for a grant, we find that the grants did not have a noticeable effect on the presidential election. Our estimates of the average effect of receiving a grant on Democratic vote share range from 0.02 percentage points to 0.36 percentage points. Our estimates of the average effect of receiving a grant on turnout range from -0.03 percentage points to 0.13 percentage points. Across specifications, our 95% confidence intervals typically include negative effects, and our confidence intervals from all specifications fail to include effects on Democratic vote share larger than 0.58 percentage points and effects on turnout larger than 0.40 percentage points. We characterize the magnitude of our effects by asking how large they are compared to the margin by which Biden won the 2020 election. In simple bench-marking exercises, we find that the effects of the grants were likely too small to have changed the outcome of the 2020 presidential election.

“The Centerpiece of College Athletics”: Prioritizing Education in the College Sports Reform Movement
Aaron Miller
This article, which is based upon long-term fieldwork observations of a big-time women’s college basketball team, proposes reforms that would more sufficiently compensate the professional role big-time college athletes perform, all without sacrificing the educational connection that is vital to the core of college sports for men and women. It argues that colleges involved in big-time college sports should expect college athletes to be students first, allow them to earn pay for their names, images, and likenesses (NILs), and strike a better balance between providing education to athletes and entertainment to the public.

Mixed Leadership Stochastic Differential Game in Feedback Information Pattern with Applications
Qi Huang, Jingtao Shi
This paper is devoted to a high-dimensional mixed leadership stochastic differential game on a finite horizon in feedback information mode, where the control variables enter into the diffusion term of state equation. A verification theorem for the feedback Stackelberg-Nash equilibrium is obtained by using a system of coupled and fully nonlinear parabolic partial differential equations. We apply the verification theorem to deal with a dynamic innovation and pricing decision problem where the buyer acts as the leader in the pricing decisions and the dynamic model is stochastic. Via the solutions of coupled Riccati equations, we explicitly express the feedback equilibrium strategies of innovation and pricing. And by analysis, the local existence and uniqueness of the solutions of the coupled Riccati equations is derived. We also conduct some numerical analyses to discuss the effects of model parameters on the feedback equilibrium strategies.
Follow the Leader: Technical and Inspirational Leadership in Open Source Software
Jerome Hergueux, Samuel Kessler
We conduct the first comprehensive study of the behavioral factors which predict leader emergence within open source software (OSS) virtual teams. We leverage the full history of developers' interactions with their teammates and projects at github.com between January 2010 and April 2017 (representing about 133 million interactions) to establish that - contrary to a common narrative describing open source as a pure "technical meritocracy" - developers' communication abilities and community building skills are significant predictors of whether they emerge as team leaders. Inspirational communication therefore appears as central to the process of leader emergence in virtual teams, even in a setting like OSS, where technical contributions have often been conceptualized as the sole pathway to gaining community recognition. Those results should be of interest to researchers and practitioners theorizing about OSS in particular and, more generally, leadership in geographically dispersed virtual teams, as well as to online community managers.
Tourism planning in the Azores and feedback from visitors
João Crispim Ponte, Gualter Couto , Pedro Pimentel
et al.
Tourism planning is increasingly a fundamental process for qualifying and increasing the competitiveness of tourist destinations, especially when it is required to take into account the new needs of tourists and the global trend towards meeting the principles of sustainable tourism. This study aims to analyse the improvements that, in the opinion of visitors, should be implemented in Ponta Delgada, the largest hub of tourism activity in the Azores (Portugal), detecting differences between specific groups of visitors, in order to contribute to territorial organisation and the optimisation of tourism experiences. 400 answers to a survey distributed among tourists who visited this Azorean municipality were analysed, using several statistical methods, such as the chi-square test of independence and some Hierarchical Cluster Analysis algorithms. The main conclusions refer to the statistically significant associations between the mean of transport used to travel and views of some aspects to be improved, with signs of patterns in visits and critical attitude.

Determinants of Portuguese Banks’ Profitability – An Update
Maria Clara Pires , Maria Basílio , Carlos Borralho
In this study, we assess the main determinants of banks' profitability in Portugal over the period 2015–2018. We divide the factors that can influence bank profitability into several groups: management quality, credit quality, capital adequacy, liquidity (internal bank factors), and GDP growth (an external factor). The panel dataset is composed of annual report data for the 18 major banks operating in Portugal, representing about 98% of the Portuguese banking product. Profitability has been a persistent challenge for banks since the global financial crisis. Moreover, the Portuguese banking system had been facing several structural problems, which makes this topic particularly relevant. The profitability proxy used is the return on equity (ROE). The empirical strategy followed was pooled OLS. Variables relevant for explaining Portuguese banks' profitability are capital adequacy, liquidity and credit risk. As expected, the results show that capital adequacy (TIER 1) and credit quality (CVCT) have a negative and significant impact on banks' profitability, whereas liquidity (RAL) has a positive impact.

Perceptions of the Fiscal Challenges Facing Athletic Departments of Historically Black Colleges and Universities
Kelly Elliott, Timothy Kellison
Research has shown the athletic departments of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) do not generate significant revenue. The financial struggle facing HBCU athletic departments can be explained using Resource Dependency theory. Specifically, as HBCUs are the most under-resourced member institutions of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the numbers prove how these institutions do not have the funds to invest in their programs. The purpose of this study is to explore the fiscal challenges facing HBCU athletic departments. To gather this information, two different groups of participants were interviewed to obtain an independent and insider perspective of the challenges. Phenomenology was the methodological approach for this study as each participant had the opportunity to discuss their unique view of the current financial state of HBCU athletic departments. Participants took part in semi-structured interviews framed around fiscal challenges. This study contributes to the growing body of literature addressing HBCU athletics by providing an exploration of current fiscal challenges facing the institutions.

“I learned that sports teaches rape culture”: Assessing Sexual Violence Prevention Education for Intercollegiate Athletes
Kristy McCray, Elizabeth Taylor
In fall 2018, 81 intercollegiate athletes participated in Fair Play: Sexual Violence Prevention for Athletes. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of the Fair Play curriculum and facilitation, specifically learning if athletes’ attitudes toward women and/or rape myth acceptance changed as a result of their participation in Fair Play. Athletes completed pre- and post-test surveys to measure perceptions of sexual assault/rape myth acceptance (Gerger, Kley, Bohner, & Siebler, 2007) and gender roles (Spence, Helmreich, & Stapp, 1973). In addition, 20 athletes participated in semi-structured qualitative interviews to further explain their knowledge of sexual violence after completing Fair Play. Survey results showed significant differences for pre- and post-test scores on rape myth acceptance, but not for attitudes toward women. Interview results showed that Fair Play participants could articulate a raised awareness of sexual violence, appropriately define sexual violence and consent, and a rejection of rape myths. Implications include further understanding of effective rape prevention education.

Mean-field selective optimal control via transient leadership
Giacomo Albi, Stefano Almi, Marco Morandotti
et al.
A mean-field selective optimal control problem of multipopulation dynamics via transient leadership is considered. The agents in the system are described by their spatial position and their probability of belonging to a certain population. The dynamics in the control problem is characterized by the presence of an activation function which tunes the control on each agent according to the membership to a population, which, in turn, evolves according to a Markov-type jump process. This way, a hypothetical policy maker can select a restricted pool of agents to act upon based, for instance, on their time-dependent influence on the rest of the population. A finite-particle control problem is studied and its mean-field limit is identified via $Γ$-convergence, ensuring convergence of optimal controls. The dynamics of the mean-field optimal control is governed by a continuity-type equation without diffusion. Specific applications in the context of opinion dynamics are discussed with some numerical experiments.
Challenges Women in Software Engineering Leadership Roles Face: A Qualitative Study
Karina Kohl, Rafael Prikladnicki
Software engineering is not only about technical solutions. To a large extent, it is also concerned with organizational issues, project management, and human behavior. There are serious gender issues that can severely limit the participation of women in science and engineering careers. It is claimed that women lead differently than men and are more collaboration-oriented, communicative, and less aggressive than their male counterparts. However, when talking with women in technology companies' leadership roles, a list of problems women face grows fast. We invite women in software engineering management roles to answer the questions from an empathy map canvas. We used thematic analysis for coding the answers and group the codes into themes. From the analysis, we identified seven themes that support us to list the main challenges they face in their careers.
Branch cuts: writing, editing, and ramified complexities
Ursula Whitcher
As I was preparing my tenure application, the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents voted to redefine tenure, removing many of the institution's historical protections. Reevaluating my career priorities in light of these changes and a resurgent two-body problem, I recognized that my fundamental goal was communicating mathematical ideas. I found a new role as an editor at Mathematical Reviews, part of the American Mathematical Society. To my surprise, thinking more about my identity as a writer and editor also changed my perspective on my own sexuality and gender identity, inspiring new approaches to leadership.
Determination of an Optimal Control Strategy for Vaccine Administration in COVID-19 Pandemic Treatment
Gustavo Barbosa Libotte, Fran Sérgio Lobato, Gustavo Mendes Platt
et al.
During decades, mathematical models have been used to predict the behavior of physical and biologic systems, and to define strategies aiming the minimization of the effects regarding different types of diseases. In the present days, the development of mathematical models to simulate the dynamic behavior of novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is considered an important theme due to the quantity of infected people worldwide. In this work, the aim is to determine an optimal control strategy for vaccine administration in COVID-19 pandemic treatment considering real data from China. For this purpose, an inverse problem is formulated and solved in order to determine the parameters of the compartmental SIR (Susceptible-Infectious-Recovered) model. To solve such inverse problem, the Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm is employed. After this step, two optimal control problems (mono- and multi-objective) to determine the optimal strategy for vaccine administration in COVID-19 pandemic treatment are proposed. The first consists of minimizing the quantity of infected individuals during the treatment. The second considers minimizing together the quantity of infected individuals and the prescribed vaccine concentration during the treatment, i.e., a multi-objective optimal control problem. The solution of each optimal control problems is obtained using DE and Multi-Objective Differential Evolution (MODE) algorithms, respectively. The results regarding the proposed multi-objective optimal control problem provides a set of evidences from which an optimal strategy for vaccine administration can be chosen, according to a given criterion.
