Kathleen Watt, Rearranged: An Opera Singer’s Facial Cancer and Life Transposed
Maria I. Medved
In her memoir Kathleen Watt narrates her decade-long confrontation with facial cancer (osteosarcoma) of the upper jaw and the extensive reconstructive surgeries that ensued. Watt frames her illness within the broader politics of appearance and identity. Central to her narrative is the face as a site of selfhood, recognition, and ethical encounter, reflecting Levinas’s philosophy. She resists reductive illness tropes by emphasizing existential transformation, visibility, and relational vulnerability. Her memoir provides scholars with valuable insights into embodiment, narrative identity, and the interpretive work of illness narratives.
Biography, Literature (General)
Spain and Russia in the Life of Agustin de Betancourt
Olga V. Volosyuk
The article examines the main stages of the life and activity of Spanish engineer Agustin de Betancourt who exerted a significant influence on the development of engineering in Russia at the beginning of the XIX century and made a significant contribution to the formation of the country's cultural heritage. Particular attention is paid to the poorly studied aspects of his biography: the reasons for moving from Spain to Russia and the role played by Russian ambassador to Madrid Ivan Muravyov-Apostol in the move, as well as specification of some previously unknown details of his stay in the Russian Empire. Based on the documents from Russian archives (the Archive of Foreign Policy of the Russian Federation, the State Archive of the Russian Federation) and Spanish archives (the National Historical Archive, the General Archive of the Indies, the Historical Archive of the Nobility), on the documents from Orotava Foundation in the Canary Islands, as well as on memoirs, the study traces the peculiarities of Agustin de Betancourt’s relationship with Emperor Alexander I, whose favorable disposition initially granted Betancourt carte-blanche in his work. The author comes to the conclusion that the disgrace of Agustin de Betancourt led to the “oblivion” of his contribution to the architectural and engineering image of St. Petersburg for almost a century. It is proved that apart from the monarch’s disgrace, a certain role was played by architect Auguste de Montferrand for this disgrace, who had grabbed the credit for his joint work with the Spanish engineer for himself.

Penza and Saransk police chief Ivan Vasilyevich Kravkov: materials for biography and portrait attribution
Sergey V. Belousov
Background. The formation of regional identity is greatly influenced by the process of formation and evolution of various public authorities and local government. This was especially evident during crucial periods for the country. An important role was played by the subjective factor, i.e. those representatives of the authorities who determined the main vectors of development of each particular region and thereby influenced the processes of territorial integration. In this regard, the appeal to the biographies of provincial officials seems to be very relevant. The purpose of this work is to examine the activities of Penza and Saransk police chief I.V. Kravkov and the attribution of his portrait. Materials and methods. The research tasks were achieved through the dialectical method of historical processes studying, including the principles of historicism, objectivity and systematicity. It helped to characterize the variety of sources, compare and analyze them in complex. Results. The complex of sources allowed attribution of the portrait of Penza and Saransk police chief I.V. Kravkov, as well as to identify the main milestones of his biography and present the main directions of his activities during the Patriotic War of 1812. Conclusions. Identification and attribution of portraits of the first half of the XIX century is one of the important directions in the study of the era of the Patriotic War of 1812. It should be noted that researchers who turn to this topic are primarily interested in portrait images of officers and generals of the Russian army who directly participated in the fighting with Napoleon's army. The study of portraits of representatives of various estates of provincial society, in-cluding officials of provincial and county administrations, in the context of addressing the topic of the “war of 1812”, fades into the background. In this regard, a miniature portrait of Penza (1812–1814) and Saransk (1814–1826) police chief Ivan Vasilyevich Kravkov, which is in a private collection, is of undoubted interest. In the State Archive of the Penza Region, more than 20 reports of I.V. Kravkov, dated June 1813 – February 1814, were found, in which various aspects of his activities as Penza police chief are touched upon. All reports have I.V. Kravkov's autographs. The Penza police chief was mentioned in his memoirs by the lieutenant-general of the Bavarian 5th Line Regiment F. von Furtenbach. The miniature portrait of the Penza police chief I.V. Kravkov certainly complements the gallery of available images of representatives of the provincial society of the Penza province of the Patriotic War of 1812.

La représentation du genre au XIXe siècle. Masculinités dans le couple royal et la biographie de François d’Assise de Bourbon
Félix Colás Loricera
The royal couple formed by Isabel II and Francis of Assisi is particularly interesting because of the external and internal dynamics that marked a peculiar development that, in several aspects, marked the future of the Spanish monarchy and society. The internal dynamics are defined by the "inversion" of roles represented by the fact that Isabel was the monarch and Francis the consort, as well as by the dissident personalities of both. Isabel has been extensively studied in this respect, while Francis is a more obscure but equally relevant case study. With respect to external issues, the biography of Francis in his marriage is marked by the period of transition in 19th century notions of gender from traditional-aristocratic to Victorian-bourgeois society, a transition in which the couple was judged by various strata of society and from different points of view and canons of behaviour.

Odinian Sources of Simonas Daukantas
Roma Bončkutė
The article discusses the sources used by the national Lithuanian historian Simonas Daukantas (1793–1864) which determined the inclusion of Odin in the ranks of Lithuanian/Baltic cultural heroes in the work BUDĄ Senowęs-Lëtuwiû Kalnienû ĩr Ƶámajtiû (en. The Character of the Ancient Lithuanians–Highlanders and Lowlanders, 1845). The first source discussed is the article “De l’ère primitive des législations sacerdotales” (“On the legislative power of the priests of primeval times”) published in the magazine “Le Catholique” in 1826, on which S. Daukantas mainly relied when discussing the figure of Odin. Upon investigation, this source does not consider Odin to be the hero of the Baltic people, either. It is speculated that S. Daukantas was impressed by the laconic biography of Odin and the note added at the end that the royal families of Saxony and Denmark, the Merovingian dynasty and the Lombard princes included Odin in their genealogy. S. Daukantas analogously states that Odin is also a Lithuanian hero because, even ‘now’, there are people with the surname Odinas living in Lithuania and Samogitia. Actually, S. Daukantas’s mother was née Odinaitė.
This article further discusses two other sources: Geschichte Preußens (1827, vol. 1) by Johannes Voigt (1786–1863), and Geschichte von Littauen, Kurland und Liefland (1785) by Ludwig Albrecht Gebhardi (1735–1802). It was determined that only J. Voigt briefly indicated that Odin founded Asgard near Daugava. S. Daukantas adopted this opinion in his work.
On February 12, 1845, in a letter to Teodoras Narbutas (1784–1864), S. Daukantas reproached him for not including Odin in the ranks of Lithuanian cultural heroes and mentioned Le Catholique and Jntrodukcyi Maleta do historyi Dunskiej as important sources for the research pertaining to the possible Baltic origins of Odin. This inspires a hypothesis that S. Daukantas made a mistake in specifying the name of the Swiss-born historian Paul Henri Mallet because he did not write about Odin as a Lithuanian/Baltic hero in his work on Danish history. The article investigates which author’s introduction to a book on Danish history led S. Daukantas to a belief that he found information about the Lithuanian/Baltic Odin. It must have been an authoritative historian because S. Daukantas did not change his opinion about Odin when he wrote Pasakojimas apej Wejkałus Lietuwiû tautos senowie (Stories about Events in Ancient Lithuania, 1850) and emphasized that Northern writers refer to Odin as having lived and worked in Lithuania. After getting acquainted with Peter Friedrich Suhm’s introduction (Einleitung oder kritische Muthmaſsungen über die teste Abstammung und Geschichte der Nordischen Nation) to Geschichte der Dänen (1803), the study reaches the conclusion that it determined S. Daukantas’s decision about Odin’s Baltic origins. It is likely that an interdisciplinary study of the figure of Odin would finally allow us to confirm or reject this belief of S. Daukantas.

Biography of a Painted Vessel from Starčevo: Discovering Layers of Meaning
Olga Bajčev
Scientific interest in the painted pottery of the Starčevo culture in Serbia dates back to the very beginnings of research and the first works on the relative-chronological systematization of the Early and Middle Neolithic of the central Balkans. This paper presents the deconstruction of our established notion of painted ceramics as the ultimate parameter of relative-chronological dating, the most representative material reflection of the cultural identity of the people of Starčevo culture and the highest achievements of Starčevo culture. The paper discusses circumstances and archaeological practices through which this ingrained view and knowledge of painted pottery was formed. The research is based on the analysis of the biography of a painted vessel from the Starčevo-Grad site, having in mind that a detailed life history of an object can shed light on wider phenomena in the archaeological discipline. The aim of this paper is to remind that objects do not have a single essential meaning, but that their meaning shifts and builds through changes in the historical and social context, as well as through changes of actors gathered around certain practices in which the objects are used. The biography of the painted vessel is therefore viewed as a series of assemblages of relations in two planes, through which its identity and layers of meaning were built. The first plane is the Neolithic, in which the focus is on the practices of painting and use, and the second is her life in the role of an archaeological artifact, during which she moves from the sphere of scientific research and musealization to the sphere of negotiating contemporary cultural identities. By applying a new analytical approach, we discovered that this vessel was not very skilfully and carefully painted, and that as such it does not testify to the highest achievements of Starčevo culture, but to a social practice, learning, apprentices and mastering the skill of pottery painting. Therefore, I believe that by reducing painted pottery to relative-chronological parameters and luxury objects, we lose sight of the possibilities through which we can build much more diverse interpretations of the past.

The Poetic Concept of Art of L.F. Dostoevskaya
Aleksandra V. Banchenko
L.F. Dostoevskaya’s oeuvre consists of short stories and two novels, together with a biography of F.M. Dostoevsky. Her fiction is perceived by researchers as largely autobiographical; her book about F.M. Dostoevsky as a father is considered the least reliable source of biography. Therefore a mixture of genres can be considered: her prose displays features of the poetics of autobiography; her documentary contains fiction, while the author’s discourse dominates the character of the book. This article discusses some features of the poetics of fiction and the documentary prose of L.F. Dostoevskyaya. Dostoevskaya’s works suggest that the narrator is close to the author, since in some works the narrator is an autobiographical narrator named Lyubov Feodorovna. This article presents elements of a narratological analysis of her oeuvre of novels and short stories; this can help the reader trace the connections between the perspectives of the protagonists and narrators. In some narrative structures, the positions of the protagonists and narrators become equivalent due to the extra-narrative roles of the latter. The article also provides a partial analysis of the main themes and motifs of her prose, indicating their connection to the work of F.M. Dostoevsky. In particular, we discuss the connection between Dostoevskaya’s prose and her father’s unfinished novel ‘Netochka Nezvanova’. Taken as a single text, the prose of the great writer’s daughter demonstrates features of the Bildungsroman.

Kirchner and Time An Analysis of Linear and Nonlinear Time in Leon Kirchner’s Interlude I
Adriana Jarvis Twitchell, Guilherme Sauerbronn Barros
This article aims to analyze temporality in Leon Kirchner’s Interlude I for solo piano, in light of Jonathon Kramer’s book The Time of Music. The first section serves as an introduction to the composer – his biography, influences, and compositional style. The following section introduces Jonathon Kramer’s book and his concepts of linear and nonlinear time in music. Thereafter an analysis of aspects of the Interlude’s linear time, as defined by Kramer, is presented, including linearity manifest through developing variation, step-wise motion, tonal references, changes in tempo, flexion count changes, and transpositions. The next section seeks to examine manifestations of nonlinear time in the Interlude, such as balance and recapitulation, and discusses the implications of Kramer’s nonlinear moment time. The conclusion summarizes interactions between linearity and nonlinearity in the Interlude.

Autobiography of a ‘Living Plagiary’: Vasilii Rozanov’s Secret Dostoevskian Genealogy
Irina Erman
This article examines Vasilii Rozanov’s autobiographical practices by analyzing previously unnoticed aspects of his engagement with Fedor Dostoevsky’s works. Rozanov’s fascination with Dostoevsky is hardly a secret, and his contemporaries found his tendency to embody characters, such as Fedor Karamazov or Smerdiakov so striking that he was even called a ‘living plagiary’ of Dostoevsky’s novels. And yet, a major aspect of this literary performance has yet to be explored. The author posits that Rozanov’s excessive intertextuality and his creative embodiment of certain Dostoevskian characters contribute to his creation of a hybrid autobiography, whose uniqueness emerges from its fundamental dependence on others’ texts and its thematization of relationality. Ultimately, this article argues that Rozanov wrote himself into a Dostoevskian genealogy of his own making, while also developing an original authorial persona that combined autobiographical referentiality with a subjectivity enacted primarily through interaction with others’ texts.

A Tribute to Guillermo (Willy) Kuschel (1918–2017)
Rolf G. Oberprieler, Christopher H. C. Lyal, Kimberi R. Pullen
et al.
This tribute commemorates the life and work of Guillermo (Willy) Kuschel, who made substantial contributions to the understanding of weevil systematics, evolution and biology. Willy was born in Chile in 1918 and studied philosophy, theology and biology. He became fascinated by weevils early on and completed his Ph.D. degree on South American Erirhinini. Subsequent employment by the University of Chile provided him with many opportunities to further his weevil research and undertake numerous collecting expeditions, including to remote and rugged locations such as the Juan Fernandez Islands and southern Chile. In 1963 he accepted a position at the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research in New Zealand, where he became Head of the Systematics Group in the Entomology Division. His emphasis on field work and collections led to the establishment of the New Zealand Arthropod Collection, which he guided through its greatest period of expansion. His retirement in 1983 offered him increased opportunities to pursue his weevil research. In 1988 he presented a new scheme of the higher classification of weevils, which ignited and inspired much subsequent research into weevil systematics. The breadth and quality of his research and his huge collecting efforts have left a legacy that will benefit future entomologists, especially weevil workers, for decades to come. This tribute presents a biography of Willy and accounts of his contributions to, and impact on, the systematics of weevils both regionally and globally. All of his publications and the genera and species named after him are listed in two appendices.

Ivan Gams – terminologist, encyclopedist, biographer, and more
Drago Kladnik
In the second half of the twentieth century, Slovenian geography was characterized by gradual specialization and orientation of individuals into increasingly narrower areas of scholarly interest. Academy member Ivan Gams was no exception, focusing his research and teaching on karst studies. Throughout his work he preserved an exceptional research breadth, which is reflected in the wide variety of his contributions in all areas of physical geography; in addition, he also excelled as a regional geographer. His contributions in other areas of geography, which were by no means small, tend to pale in comparison. These reflect his constantly restless and critical research spirit, with which he helped shape Slovenia’s social developments in the recent past. Outside physical geography, Gams was primarily involved in studying geographical terms and names.
