Physical Pictures for Quasisymmetry in Crystals

Bryan D. Assunção, Emmanuel V. C. Lopes, Tome M. Schmidt et al.

Quasisymmetry (QS) provides a novel route to understand and control near-degeneracies, Berry curvature, optical selection rules, and symmetry-protected phenomena in quantum materials. Here we give physical interpretations of the emergence of QS operators across multiple material families. Using density functional theory and the $\mathbf{k}\cdot\mathbf{p}$ formalism, we identify QS subspaces and calculate their representation matrices, quantifying the quasisymmetry via a metric $ε$ that measures subspace invariance. For Sn/SiC and transition-metal dichalcogenide monolayers, QS corresponds to an emergent mirror symmetry, whereas in wurtzite crystals it manifests as an emergent spatial inversion. By contrast, for AgLa the QS appearing in avoided crossings is inherited from a nearby high-symmetry point rather than being an emergent lattice symmetry. Combining group-theoretical analysis and $\mathbf{k}\cdot\mathbf{p}$ modeling, our results establish concrete physical pictures for QS and provide practical criteria to diagnose it in first-principles calculations.

Quantum simulation in the entanglement picture

D. -S. Wang, X. Xu, Y. -D. Liu

The notion of ``picture'' is fundamental in quantum mechanics. In this work, a new picture, which we call entanglement picture, is proposed based on the novel channel-state duality, whose importance is revealed in quantum information science. We illustrate the application of entanglement picture in quantum algorithms for the simulation of many-body dynamics, quantum field theory, thermal physics, and more generic quantities.

Elemental-Migration-Assisted Full-Color-Tunable Upconversion Nanoparticles for Video-Rate Three-Dimensional Volumetric Displays.

Kwangchol Mun, J. Kyhm, Ja Yeon Lee et al.

Herein, we demonstrate video-rate color three-dimensional (3D) volumetric displays using elemental-migration-assisted full-color-tunable upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs). In the heavily doped NaErF4:Tm-based core@multishell UCNPs, erbium migration was observed. By tailoring this migration through adjustment of the intermediate shell thickness between the core and the sensitizer-doped second shell, red-green orthogonal upconversion luminescence (UCL) was achieved. Furthermore, highly efficient red-green-blue orthogonal UCL and full-color tunability were achieved in the UCNPs through a combination of elemental-migration-assisted color tuning and selective photon blocking. Finally, 3D volumetric displays were fabricated using a UCNP-polydimethylsiloxane composite. More specifically, 3D color images were created and motion pictures based on the expansion, rotation, and up/down movement of the displayed images were realized in the display matrix. Overall, our study provides new insights into upconversion color tuning and the achievement of motion pictures in the UCNP-polydimethylsiloxane composite is expected to accelerate the further development of solid-state full-color 3D volumetric displays.

What Is the Work of Animation? The Plasticity of Time in the Fourth-Dimensional Image

Cassandra Guan

Plasticity is a central concept in the philosophy of Catherine Malabou and the theory of animation. And yet, the temporal dimension of transformation and mutability that Malabou foregrounds in her philosophy is missing from recent theoretical accounts of plasticity in animation studies. In these accounts, plasticity appears as a mode of spatial extension, conveying the elasticity of form across a Cartesian timeline, whereas Malabou aims to understand time’s own metamorphosis and self-differentiation. This article invokes Malabou’s theorization of plasticity as the becoming of time itself rather than the becoming of things in time to rethink the perception of life-like movement in animation. Reviewing the techniques of animation that Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston describes in The Illusion of Life as “drawing in the fourth dimension”, I argue that Malabou’s characterization of plasticity as the capacity “to see (what is) coming” (voir venir) gets to the heart of animation as an art of subjective anticipation. Utilizing the human perceptual system’s tendency to invent new structures and relationships in response to changing inputs from the environment, animation prepares us to anticipate the unforeseeable and to perceive an order of movement typically concealed by the movement of objects in space.

Portrait of a Girly Girl: Self-Recording as a Feminist Practice

Sofia Pirandello

YouTube, Instagram and TikTok are increasingly used today as tools of resistance and environments of expression. This paper will focus on feminist video-selfies that address stereotypes of the female body, status and behaviour and propose to ironically dismantle them. The article will consider issues of female networked presence and creativity by referring to early attempts to create a personal video channel, documented by Elisa Giardina Papa in her video artwork need ideas!?!PLZ!! (2011). The undercover presentation of political content will be discussed as an activist strategy, as in artist Addie Wagenknecht’s fake make-up tutorials, in which she actually gives instructions on how to protect oneself both online and offline. Video-selfies are widely shared on social platforms as a playful way to meditate on personal identity. This happens, for example, thanks to the social filters of the artist S()fia Braga, which allow users to freely experiment with unfathomable views of themselves and to interact with others in a performative way. All these examples use creative strategies to convey a critical message. While never discouraging physical protest, they offer another ground for activism and dissent, and the possibility of literally embodying them.

Big pictures of motivic and classical homotopy theories

Ahmad Rouintan

Motivic homotopy theory is meant to play the role of algebraic topology, in particular homotopy theory, in the context of algebraic geometry. As proved by Oliver Rondigs and Paul Arne Ostvaer, this theory is closely connected to Voevodsky's triangulated category of motives. A connection that is the motivic analogue of the connection between algebraic topology and homological algebra. In this paper, we try to understand the big picture of motivic homotopy theory and its connection to Voevodsky's motives by comparison to the classical counterpart.

Equivalence Principle for Quantum Mechanics in the Heisenberg Picture

Otto C. W. Kong

We present an exact quantum observable analog of the weak equivalence principle for a `relativistic' quantum particle. The quantum geodesic equations are obtained from Heisenberg equations of motion as an exact analog of a fully covariant classical Hamiltonian evolution picture, with the proper identification of the canonical momentum variables as $p_μ$, rather than $p^μ$. We discuss the meaning of the equations in relation to projective measurements as well as equations with solution curves as ones in the noncommutative geometric picture of spacetime, and a plausible approach to quantum gravity as a theory about quantum observables as physical quantities including the notion of quantum coordinate transformation.

Design of a linear-rotary ultrasonic motor for optical focusing inspired by the bionic motion principles of the earthworms

Yingzhi Wang, Jie Deng, Shijing Zhang et al.

ABSTRACTMulti-motor configuration of multi-DOF (degree of freedom) optical system is a major source of redundant structure, putting a limitation on the simple and miniaturized design. Thus, a novel two-DOF ultrasonic motor (USM) is proposed to provide a feasible method of application in the lens autofocus of the optical system. The proposed USM operates by one longitudinal mode and two orthogonal bending modes, which is inspired by the bionic motion principle of the earthworms. The frequency degeneration among the three working modes is performed, and the working principle of the USM is verified via the FEM simulation. A prototype of the two-DOF USM is fabricated, and its mechanical output characteristics are tested. The experimental results indicate that the prototype achieves the maximum rotary and linear speeds of 3319.6 rpm and 57.6 mm/s, respectively. Furthermore, we demonstrate the result of a simple focusing experiment using the prototype and obtain a series of clear pictures, which verifies the feasibility of application in the optical focusing system.

Exact solutions for time-dependent non-Hermitian oscillators: classical and quantum pictures

Kevin Zelaya, Oscar Rosas-Ortiz

We associate the stationary harmonic oscillator with time-dependent systems exhibiting non-Hermiticity by means of point transformations. The new systems are exactly solvable, with all-real spectrum, and transit to the Hermitian configuration for the appropriate values of the involved parameters. We provide a concrete generalization of the Swanson oscillator that includes the Caldirola-Kanai model as a particular case. Explicit solutions are given in both, the classical and quantum pictures.

Piecewise Interaction Picture Density Matrix Quantum Monte Carlo

William Van Benschoten, James J. Shepherd

The density matrix quantum Monte Carlo (DMQMC) set of methods stochastically samples the exact $N$-body density matrix for interacting electrons at finite temperature. We introduce a simple modification to the interaction picture DMQMC method (IP-DMQMC) which overcomes the limitation of only sampling one inverse temperature point at a time, instead allowing for the sampling of a temperature range within a single calculation thereby reducing the computational cost. At the target inverse temperature, instead of ending the simulation, we incorporate a change of picture away from the interaction picture. The resulting equations of motion have piecewise functions and use the interaction picture in the first phase of a simulation, followed by the application of the Bloch equation once the target inverse temperature is reached. We find that the performance of this method is similar to or better than the DMQMC and IP-DMQMC algorithms in a variety of molecular test systems.

Motion Pictures as a Source of Empirical Language Data (A Case Study of Counterfactuals)

Andrey Druzhinin

The article focuses on the problem of research methodology in linguistics and argues that motion pictures, or feature films, provide a good source of empirical data for a realistic investigation of language as a communicative behavior. Evidence from epistemology and philosophy of science shows that scriptism and rationalism as two dominating methodologies in traditional linguistics do not give a whole picture of language functionality because through them we cannot observe a human's communicative behavior in dynamics. The aim of the article is to offer an alternative understanding of the subject-matter, method and data for linguistic research which would be grounded on human experience observable in films. In particular, the term 'languaging' is adopted to describe the dynamic process of experience construction in referential and attentional framings. The investigation of languaging is thus based on the principle of holism, circularity and 'double perspectival' view of one's experience. The author of the article gives a number of reasons why written texts alone do not provide reliable data in this respect and why motion pictures are a more viable alternative. The paper introduces the methodology of holistic research and open-ended experiential analysis and demonstrates in a case study how counterfactuals as grammatically and experientially enacted patterns can be observed and investigated in the film Atonement.

Second Order Twist Contributions to the Balitsky-Kovchegov Equation at small-x: Deterministic and Stochastic Pictures

Silas K Grossberndt

We study the second order twist corrections to a toy model of a dipole-dipole interaction in the context of a both deterministic and stochastic effects. This work is done in the high $N_C$ limit in the Bjorken picture. We show that the correction to the second twist terms of the stochastic picture suggest additional importance of the second twist correction in the stochastic model as compared to the deterministic model.
