Transforming from 2D to 3D: A Review of Urban Green Space Visualization and Analysis Methods at Different Scales

Wei Zhang, Anqi Chen, István Valánszki

With the development of city information modeling, digital twins, and smart cities, traditional 2D-based urban planning progress is now being transformed into 3D panoramic spatial planning. Current urban green space modeling and analysis methods largely rely on 2D landscape patterns and indicators, which cannot express the vertical characteristics of green spaces. This study reviews the commonly used methods for modeling green spaces in 3D environments and analyzes their applicability. Three case studies at different scales – regional, community, and site – are discussed, and an automated modeling and analysis process for each case study based on deep learning and parametric modeling tools is then constructed. The three case studies include the estimation of national-scale 3Dvegetation volume using GEDI for different cities in China, the construction of voxel models for green spaces in a middle school campus based on LiDAR point cloud data, and the application of L-system generative algorithms for simulating and predicting tree growth in the dormitory area. The proposed 3D green space modeling and analysis methods could support green space’s 3D modeling and analysis needs at different scales.

Analysis of Contributing Factors to Passenger Flow Benefits in Tokyo Metropolitan Area Rail Transit System

YANG Yao, WANG Zhenbo, FAN Jing

[Objective] The current development of urban rail transit in China faces issues such as blind expansion, poor implementation of planning outcomes, and relatively low passenger flow benefits. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the delineation principles of Tokyo Metropolitan Area in Japan, and analyze the correlation between rail transit operational efficiency and urban development characteristics, to provide an insight for urban rail transit development in China. [Method] The delineation principles of Tokyo Metropolitan Area are introduced and their applicable research contexts are analyzed. By examining demographic changes, urban planning and implementation, urban renewal, and supporting policies and regulations within Tokyo Metropolitan Area, the unique and universal features of rail transit development in this region are revealed. [Result & Conclusion] Administrative division, spatial distance, and socio-economic linkages are the primary considerations in defining metropolitan area boundaries. Leveraging Tokyo's unique urban status and its mature ring-and-radial rail transit network, the core area of Tokyo Metropolitan Area has achieved counter-trend population growth, thereby securing a stable base of rail transit ridership. Furthermore, as the city expands, the rail transit system consistently attracts sufficient and stable centripetal passenger flow. Urban renewal efforts focus on the redevelopment of existing complexes in city centers, concentrating urban functions around rail transit hubs and improving pedestrian/cycling systems near stations, which further enhances the passenger flow appeal of rail transit. Supporting policies and regulations aimed at restricting the number and use of private cars can promote the structural optimization and adjustment of transportation within the metropolitan areas.

Shifting from adaptive capacity to transformative capacity: a case study of how Sihanoukville can develop the capacity of urban stakeholders to enable sustainability transformation in sanitation

Fiona Lord, Jason Prior, Monique Retamal

Cities worldwide are reorienting their governance and planning practices to negate the negative impacts of urbanisation and seize the opportunities that urbanisation creates through developing capacities for urban sustainability transformations. There has been limited research to date on how urban stakeholders can develop their transformative capacities, especially in the lower-income settings of rapidly developing Southeast Asian countries. In this region, Sihanoukville, Cambodia, has recently experienced a major urban construction boom and has become a city of strategic planning focus for the Cambodian government. To support these efforts, our case study of Sihanoukville city investigates how Sihanoukville can develop the capacities needed to enable sustainability transformation of its sanitation sector. We found Sihanoukville had adaptive capacity but required strengthening of a range of key urban transformative capacities. Sihanoukville city could focus initially on strengthening reflexive and learning practices, knowledge partnerships and collective sustainability visions and goals.

Development and education of company managers

Milojević Irena, Jovanović Duško, Matić Iva

Proper selection of persons to perform managerial work (in various forms of ownership) is an important initial step, and after proper selection, one should continuously work with persons who will perform that work, monitor them, guide and work on their career development. When choosing a leader, one must take into account the knowledge he should possess, desirable traits (intellectual, voluntary and emotional personality traits), attitudes, the degree of authority he enjoys and the nature of functioning -the group he works with to solve problems. Important personality traits, which should be taken into account when choosing a person for managers are: temperament, interests, character and abilities, and they can be determined to some extent on the basis of certain qualitative and quantitative indicators. Numerous knowledge from practice, although various sciences and scientific disciplines provide a good basis for high efficiency and effectiveness, show that there are many managerial (managerial) problems, and there are few good managers. The aim of this paper is to provide certain theoretical knowledge that provides a good basis for improving operational practices aimed at properly identifying candidates for managers, their proper education and training throughout their working lives and career development.

Quantifying performance of sheltered link-way facility in Singapore using human-centric indicators

S. Sun, Q. Zhou, S. Lal et al.

Pedestrian link-ways are important street facility for first-/last-mile mobility. This study compared pedestrians’ walking experiences on sheltered/unsheltered link-ways by collecting their perceived walking time/distance. It is found that, first, pedestrians (51 along sheltered and 49 along unsheltered link-ways) generally walk at a faster pace along unsheltered link-ways as compared to sheltered link-way. Second, participants are found to more likely over-perceive walking times and distances (with odds of three to one) along unsheltered link-way than sheltered link-way, and with more extreme deviations on unsheltered link-ways. Third, sheltered link-ways accrued better Level of Service (LOS) ratings on factors such as weather protection, distance, accessibility/user-friendliness, comfort, safety and level of crowdedness. The study demonstrates value-add application of cognitive bias approach for examining the walking experience, and provides human-centric indicators to justify the provision of shelters to the link-way for the benefits of pedestrian users.

Can city-to-city cooperation facilitate sustainable development governance in the Global South? Lessons gleaned from seven North-South partnerships in Latin America

Luara Mayer, Le Anh Nguyen Long

The search for mechanisms that can bolster sustainable development governance is underway. Bilateral city-to-city partnerships (C2C) have been put forward as platform through which cities can strengthen sustainable development in urban landscapes. Here, we critically examine claims about the capacity of these international cooperative arrangements, originally designed and deployed as development aid delivery mechanisms, to promote sustainable development. Our systematic examination of the extant literature on bilateral North-South C2C in Latin America fails to provide sufficient evidence that C2C can deliver on its promise to promote robust governance, both generally and in the specific context of sustainable development. Instead, it seems that C2C is more likely to support than challenge entrenched practices which can weaken sustainable development governance. Identifying these tendencies is a first step in formulating strategies that may enhance C2Cs and other transnational partnerships aimed at improving urban sustainable development in the Global South.

Exploring Spatio-Temporal Patterns of Urban Village Redevelopment: The Case of Shenzhen, China

Yani Lai, Lin Jiang, Xiaoxiao Xu

The redevelopment of urban villages is a prominent part of urban renewal in China, which has attracted much attention from the academic community. However, the understanding of when and where the redevelopment of urban villages occurs is still limited partly because of the lack of empirical analysis. Through exploratory spatial data and overlay analyses, this study examines the spatio-temporal distribution characteristics based on data from 277 urban village redevelopment projects in Shenzhen, China, between 2010 and 2018. Results demonstrate that the redevelopment of urban villages occurs in central and suburban areas but rarely occurs in the periphery of the city. The overall spatial distribution is spatially clustered, having become increasingly significant from 2010 to 2018. In the beginning, the redevelopment of urban villages was dispersed in diverse areas and partly expanded into adjacent neighbourhoods. A majority of redevelopment took place in areas near the planning urban centres and the planning subway stations, which are almost in Density Zones I–III. The findings of this study contribute to new spatio-temporal perspectives in the global process mechanism of urban village redevelopment and call for special attention to the significant influences of state intervention, which is an informative reference for future sustainable urban development.

Institutionalising informal networks of the urban poor under an enabling paradigm: a case study on Greenland slum of Khulna city in Bangladesh

Md. Ashiq Ur Rahman, Astrid Ley

This paper addresses the persistent challenges in housing the urban poor in Bangladesh. In particular, it explores the empirical evidence on informal networks of the urban poor as they relate to service provision in low-income settlements of Khulna City. It also analyses the emerging forms of urban governance in low-income urban settlements. Specifically, it investigates the transformation process of project-assisted form of informal network of the urban poor. This paper argues that community-based organisations in poor settlements in Bangladesh represent informal networks of the urban poor. Whether these networks are being federated depends on their type or form, and this is often the outcome of project-led initiatives. The findings show that project based initiatives have failed to assist these networks with the appropriate rules and resources required for their effectiveness. Moreover, these efforts are taking place in a system that is attempting to establish enabling mechanisms under a system of neo-liberalism. Thus, it is necessary to explore the possible ways to bridge formal and informal processes through institutionalisation under a wider urban governance framework.

Catching Up With BIM: A Curriculum Re-Design Strategy

ECE KUMKALE ACIKGOZ

BIM has been discussed widely for enabling collaboration in AEC professions. Its widespread benefits from efficiency to sustainability in design and construction converted it into a primary tool in most AEC education institutions in the last decade. However, Turkey, like a part of central Europe, remains hesitant in this concern. The majority of schools of architecture have conventional curricula based on fragmented areas of expertise studied separately with disconnected contents, teaching methods, and requirements. This separation not only prevents the students from building links between different contents of sustainable design but also increases their workload while decreasing their creative potential. Regarding the necessity for collaboration in the growing complexity of built environments, underdeveloped skills in building links between fragmented databases is eventually becoming a serious problem.  This study is expected to demonstrate how provoking the skill to employ BIM can be to integrate creative educational experience in architecture, at the centre of which remains the design studio. The discussion concludes by suggesting pathways to catch up with the growing gap between the global evolutions of interdisciplinary and integral design thinking through the use of BIM in AEC education.
