Gender-based differences in the prevalence and types of adverse childhood experiences and their associations with psychological distress and perceived lack of safety among adolescents in Qatar
Hina Akram, Hanan F. Abdul Rahim, Suhad Daher-Nashif
et al.
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are detrimental to well-being, but gender-specific data in Arab countries is scarce. We explored gender differences in prevalence and associations of ACEs with psychological distress and feeling unsafe among Qatari adolescents using a 2017 national cross-sectional survey of 836 students (412 boys and 424 girls) from grades 8 to 12. Boys reported more ACEs and physical abuse. Gender-specific multivariable logistic regression models revealed that distress in boys was significantly associated with physical abuse (aOR = 3.35), emotional/psychological abuse (aOR = 1.77), terrifying event (1.75), and being sent away from home as punishment (aOR = 3.06). Girls reported higher psychological abuse; distress was related to parental separation (aOR = 3.41) and to being sent away from home (aOR = 3.20). Feeling unsafe was associated with parental divorce/separation in girls (aOR = 4.99) and with physical abuse among boys (aOR = 2.43). Culturally contextualized and gender-sensitive interventions are needed to address ACEs in Qatari adolescents.

Marc Gandarillas
Both empirical and anecdotal evidence suggests that there is an intricate relationship between gender and language. This can be analyzed from a number of different―yet complementary―perspectives. As early as the 1980s, research articles can be found that explore the way in which gender, power, and dominance interact in mixed-sex talk (West & Zimmerman, 1983; DeFrancisco, 1991; Herring et al., 1992). Complementarily, the complex relationship between gender and language has been approached from a same-sex talk perspective, both in female-only (Coates, 1989) and male-only settings (DeCapua & Boxer, 1999; Cameron, 1997). Beyond the private domain, women’s talk has been studied within the specific―and of utmost interest―framework provided by the public sphere (Reynolds, 1991; Holmes & Schnurr, 2006). In more recent times, sexuality has been added to the combination in an attempt to obtain a bigger―and clearer―picture (Abe, 2004; Hall, 2009; Leap, 2008). Some scholars have even traveled the extra mile by providing insightful approaches to the relationship between gender, language, and identity by establishing explicit connections between these concepts and related cultural practices (relevantly to this topic, Boxer & Gritsenko (2005) compare how women in the US and Russia tackle the surname issue when faced with marriage or partnership).

Cognitive function and physical performance in young adults who had and had not experienced the COVID-19 infection
Suphannika Ladawan, Patchareeya Amput, Saisunee Konsanit
et al.
The aim of the present study is to compare the cognitive function and physical performance of young adults who have experienced the COVID-19 infection with those who have not. Twenty-one participants who had experienced the COVID-19 infection and 21 non-COVID controls underwent a cognitive assessment (Digit Span Forward Test: DSF, and Stroop Colour and Word Test: SCWT) and physical performance test (six-minute walk test: 6MWT). The participants in the COVID-19 group tended to have lower cognitive and physical performance than those in the control group. However, the difference was not statistically significant (DSF: p = 0.59, SCWT- Word: p = 0.18, SCWT- Color: p = 0.73, SCWT-Colour – Word t: p = 0.14, and 6MWT: p = 0.54). The cognitive function and physical performance in post-COVID-19 young adults tended to be lower than non-COVID-19 participants but failed to reach statistical significance. Further studies, particularly involving large sample sizes, are required to confirm the effect of COVID-19 in young adults.

Food literacy in Venezuelan adolescents: a cross-sectional study
Jesús Enrique Ekmeiro-Salvador, Maximilian Andreas Storz, Jacinto Nebot-Bas
Food literacy reflects personal behaviours around healthy eating and is an important skill for individuals to make healthy dietary choices. The present cross-sectional study investigated food literacy and the ability to identify n = 43 foods of plant origin in n = 1322 Venezuelan adolescents aged 15–17 years in the city of Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela. With only n = 14 correctly identified plant food items (median; IQR: 12), the performance in this sample was alarmingly poor, suggesting that food literacy in Venezuelan adolescents warrants urgent public health attention. Substantial and significant sex-specific differences were found, with an even worse performance in male adolescents. The lacking ability to correctly identify foods of plant origin has national public health implications, and constitutes an important obstacle for national strategies and dietary guidelines, which aim at improving nutrient intake in this particularly vulnerable population group.

“Discrimination is harder to live with than the disease”: an interview study of the perceptions and experiences of sexual and reproductive health and rights among women living with HIV in Sweden
Faustine Kyungu Nkulu-Kalengayi, Anna-Karin Hurtig, Ida Linander
Around 40% of people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in Sweden are women. However, little is known about their experiences, particularly those related to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). This study aims to explore perceptions and experiences of SRHR among women living with HIV (LWH). Twelve interviews were conducted with women LWH from September to October 2019 and analysed using thematic analysis. The central theme describing participants’ experiences of social relationships, intimate encounters and reproductive life, “Discrimination is harder to live with than the disease itself”, is based on three themes that contain subthemes. Theme 1 describes how participants reconsider and reorient their sexual and reproductive life after diagnosis. Theme 2 highlights how (mis)perceptions of HIV affect sexual and reproductive life and lead to abusive treatment and internalisation. Theme 3 describes a paradoxical shift of responsibilities where participants experience being compelled to take greater responsibility in some situations and stripped of the right to decide in others. This study suggests that despite notable progress in HIV treatment, stigma and discrimination stemming from outdated beliefs and (mis)conceptions, ambiguous policies and guidelines, and unequal access to information affect SRHR experiences of women LWH more than the virus itself. The results emphasise the need to: update knowledge within healthcare settings and among the public; clarify ambiguous legislations and guidelines; ensure equal access to information to enable all women LWH to take informed decisions, make fully informed choices and realise their SRHR; and consider the diversity of women LWH and enable shared decision-making.

Im/migration: Family Strategies and Access to Rights
Catherine Delcroix, Josiane Le Gall, Elise Pape
Objectives: The aim of this issue of the journal is to study the way in which "making a family" influences access to rights and the integration of migrant families in Europe (France, Germany), North America (Quebec) and Djibouti, from Yemen, Syria, Tunisia, Mozambique or Brazil. Similarly, and reciprocally, he is interested in the impact of law on family experiences in a migratory context.Methodology: The ethnographic observation approach, through the cross-referenced collection of life stories and the reconstruction of the life contexts of these migrants (while respecting their words and their anonymity) makes it possible to discover, sometimes in a counter-intuitive way, the effects of the policies on their lives. Results: It often happens that within the same migrant family the legal status of its members is different, and therefore their rights to be regularised or not. As a result, these families - and more broadly, entire groups of migrants - have to carry out important work in terms of information for access to residence rights, work, access to schooling for their children, health, nationality, etc. Nothing is guaranteed a priori. Conclusion: We can imagine how much migration will continue in the face of climate change and political unrest throughout history. It is likely that a policy evaluation approach, or lack thereof, by those affected, will be increasingly necessary in the future.Contribution: This thematic issue of the journal Enfances Familles Générations highlights, from a historical and comparative approach, the impact of the legitimacy of being part of the national community to which these men and women have migrated (Destremau, 2022).

To Cheat or not to Cheat? Sex Differences and Academic Performance as Factors of Cheating Behavior
Ibnu Hadjar
Cheating behavior at higher education is a global phenomenon since it is found at any university in any country. This study is to examine whether sex differences and academic performance reflect the different likelihood of doing cheating among students. Using a questionnaire, data were collected from 436 students selected from different semesters and study programs in all faculties at a State Islamic University. Data were analyzed by using logistic regression, both separately and simultaneously. The results of data analysis revealed that male students tend to be more likely to do cheating categories than that of their female counterparts. It also found that academic performance affects negatively the likelihood of students to cheat in three categories of cheating behavior, but not in the other three. There is no stimulant effect of sex and academic performance on the likelihood of all categories of cheating behaviors. In other words, the effect of sex differences is not depended on academic performance and vice versa.

Sophie Treadwell y la cuestión racial: el difícil equilibrio entre tradición e innovación / Sophie Treadwell and the Racial Question: The Difficult Balance between Tradition and Innovation
ABSTRACT: Playwright Sophie Treadwell entered the history of American theatre as the author of Machinal, one of the first evidences of expressionist drama on Broadway stages. In this play Treadwell combined an innovative style with a rather classic theme (murder within the family). No other text written by Treadwell – neither play nor novel – enjoyed the same notoriety as Machinal. An analysis of the other plays written by this playwright will allow us to see how almost all the rest of her productions has the classic structure of realist drama; however, this traditionalism in form contrasts with a very innovative subject matter.

Modernism and postmodernism in contemporary feminism
Cristina Guirao Mirón
The article criticizes two basics points of Modernity: the separation between private space/public sphere and normative universalism. The separation between spaces has its origins in Modernity and it is the cause of gender inequality nowadays. The normative universalism is the most important criticism of Postmodernism to the Enlightened Thought.

Welche Partnerschaften scheitern? Prädiktoren der Instabilität von Ehen
Doris Rosenkranz, Harald Rost
