An Overview of Multi-Task Learning in Deep Neural Networks

Sebastian Ruder

Multi-task learning (MTL) has led to successes in many applications of machine learning, from natural language processing and speech recognition to computer vision and drug discovery. This article aims to give a general overview of MTL, particularly in deep neural networks. It introduces the two most common methods for MTL in Deep Learning, gives an overview of the literature, and discusses recent advances. In particular, it seeks to help ML practitioners apply MTL by shedding light on how MTL works and providing guidelines for choosing appropriate auxiliary tasks.

The philosophy of scientific experimentation: a review

H. Radder

Practicing and studying automated experimentation may benefit from philosophical reflection on experimental science in general. This paper reviews the relevant literature and discusses central issues in the philosophy of scientific experimentation. The first two sections present brief accounts of the rise of experimental science and of its philosophical study. The next sections discuss three central issues of scientific experimentation: the scientific and philosophical significance of intervention and production, the relationship between experimental science and technology, and the interactions between experimental and theoretical work. The concluding section identifies three issues for further research: the role of computing and, more specifically, automating, in experimental research, the nature of experimentation in the social and human sciences, and the significance of normative, including ethical, problems in experimental science.

A complete analysis of FCNC and CP constraints in general SUSY extensions of the standard model

F. Gabbiani, E. Gabrielli, A. Masiero et al.

Abstract We analyze the full set of constraints on gluino- and photino-mediated SUSY contributions to FCNC and CP violating phenomena. We use the mass insertion method, hence providing a model-independent parameterization which can be readily applied in testing extensions of the MSSM. In addition to clarifying controversial points in the literature, we provide a more exhaustive analysis of the CP constraints, in particular concerning e′/e. As physically meaningful applications of our analysis, we study the implications in SUSY-GUT's and effective supergravities with flavour nonuniversality. This allows us to detail the domain of applicability and the correct procedure of implementation of the FC mass insertion approach.

Lower-Limb Robotic Rehabilitation: Literature Review and Challenges

I. Díaz, J. J. Gil, E. Sánchez

This paper presents a survey of existing robotic systems for lower-limb rehabilitation. It is a general assumption that robotics will play an important role in therapy activities within rehabilitation treatment. In the last decade, the interest in the field has grown exponentially mainly due to the initial success of the early systems and the growing demand caused by increasing numbers of stroke patients and their associate rehabilitation costs. As a result, robot therapy systems have been developed worldwide for training of both the upper and lower extremities. This work reviews all current robotic systems to date for lower-limb rehabilitation, as well as main clinical tests performed with them, with the aim of showing a clear starting point in the field. It also remarks some challenges that current systems still have to meet in order to obtain a broad clinical and market acceptance.
