Catalonia maintained broad autonomy for 200 years after the unification of Castile and Aragon at the end of the 15th centu-ry. It was determined both by historical background and by the political situation on the Iberian Peninsula. Ever since joining the Crown of Aragon in the 12th century, Catalonia had self-government, which was guaranteed after the marriage of Isabella of Castile and Fernando of Aragon. Their and their successors’ attempts to unify the subject lands were not con-sistent, since there was no urgent need for the centralization. Castile and its colonies provided sufficient resources for for-eign policy. After the outbreak of the Thirty Years' War, these resources were no longer enough, and the Spanish monarchs began to pursue a more active centralization policy. Catalonia responded with an uprising, which led to its transition under the French rule. After ten years of struggle, Philip IV managed to win back almost the entire rebellious region. Despite the treason, the Spanish monarchy decided to maintain Catalan privileges in order to ensure the loyalty of the region in the face of the ongoing confrontation with France.

The “noveled biography” idea is the reason to inquire in the link that put together documents and imagination as a problematic heart of biography in El bastardo by Carlos María Domínguez. ¿Is the Roberto de las Carreras´s biography a noveled biography? ¿Which is the different between noveled biography and literary biography? ¿Which are the boundaries that the documents establish towards the imagination? are some of the questions that this paper would answer in this biography in particular.

Latin American Constitutions provides a comprehensive historical study of constitutionalism in Latin America from the independence period to the present, focusing on the Constitution of Cádiz, a foundational document in Latin American constitutionalism. Although drafted in Spain, it was applied in many regions of Latin America, and deputies from America formed a significant part of the drafting body. The politicization of constitutionalism reflected in Latin America's first moments proved to be a lasting legacy evident in the legal and constitutional world of the region today: many of Latin America's present challenges to establishing effective constitutionalism can be traced to the debates, ideas, structures, and assumptions of this text. This book explores the region's attempts to create effective constitutional texts and regimes in light of an established practice of linking constitutions to political goals and places important constitutional thinkers and regional constitutions, such as the Mexican Constitution of 1917, into their legal and historical context.

Abstract Despite being in the spotlight in society and the media, the issue of decolonization of Western Sahara has barely been addressed in the discussion of historical memory in the contemporary Spanish novel. This article discusses two novels (El imperio desierto [1992], by Ramón Mayrata, and Mira si yo te querré [2007], by Luis Leante) that deal with that episode in history and try to fill in a void in the actual literary field.

Taken from indigenous communities and isolated from their everyday uses and rituals, ethnographic collections tend to be mistakenly transformed into crystalline and abstracts expressions of indigenous cultures, frozen by a process in which creativity and reflexivity are not represented. This analysis of the portrait of a young Indian Bororo (indigenous people of Mato Grosso, Brazil), made in the late nineteenth century and is now in the National Museum of Rio de Janeiro, allows us to show an alternative approach, practicing a radical historicization about forces and motivations surrounding the portrait. As we follow the social networks why the portrait came to be offered, accepted, classified and incorporated into the patrimony of MN we get to reveal forgotten and silenced stories, as well as concrete practices in relation to indigenous in the Empire of Brazil (1839-1889)and also the ideological limits of romantic and nationalist representations (the «Indianismo»). On the paths of the adoption by a wealthy and aristocratic family, an Indian child, who at first is but a war trophy, tells to his step mother his native name (Piududo, or «Humming-bird »), is turned into an indian artist, imagined as a young gentleman (paguemeguera), to get at the end to purely exemplify the indianist narrative on the tragic trajectory of indian people and its impossibility to incorporate in the Brazilian society.
