Confocal laser endomicroscopy (pCLE) provides real-time histologic imaging of human tissues at a depth of 60–70 μm during endoscopy. pCLE of the extrahepatic bile duct after fluorescein injection demonstrated a reticular pattern within fluorescein-filled sinuses that had no known anatomical correlate. Freezing biopsy tissue before fixation preserved the anatomy of this structure, demonstrating that it is part of the submucosa and a previously unappreciated fluid-filled interstitial space, draining to lymph nodes and supported by a complex network of thick collagen bundles. These bundles are intermittently lined on one side by fibroblast-like cells that stain with endothelial markers and vimentin, although there is a highly unusual and extensive unlined interface between the matrix proteins of the bundles and the surrounding fluid. We observed similar structures in numerous tissues that are subject to intermittent or rhythmic compression, including the submucosae of the entire gastrointestinal tract and urinary bladder, the dermis, the peri-bronchial and peri-arterial soft tissues, and fascia. These anatomic structures may be important in cancer metastasis, edema, fibrosis, and mechanical functioning of many or all tissues and organs. In sum, we describe the anatomy and histology of a previously unrecognized, though widespread, macroscopic, fluid-filled space within and between tissues, a novel expansion and specification of the concept of the human interstitium.

Objective Facial nerve injury remains a challenging complication of cerebellopontine angle (CPA) tumor surgery, often resulting in prolonged functional impairment. The present study aimed to examine the association between different postoperative rehabilitation strategies and long-term clinical and electrophysiological recovery following facial nerve reconstruction. Methods We conducted a single-center retrospective cohort study including adult patients who underwent CPA tumor resection with intraoperatively confirmed facial nerve injury requiring reconstructive intervention between 2018 and 2023. Based on rehabilitation approaches applied in routine clinical practice, patients were classified into three groups: standard postoperative therapy, standard therapy combined with transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), and a multimodal rehabilitation strategy integrating TENS with targeted pharmacological support. Clinical follow-up extended to 12 months. Facial nerve function was evaluated using the House–Brackmann scale, Yanagihara system, Sunnybrook Facial Grading System, and Facial Disability Index, alongside surface and needle electromyographic parameters. Multivariable analyses were performed to account for demographic, tumor-related, surgical, and baseline functional factors. Results All groups demonstrated progressive improvement in facial nerve function over the follow-up period. Patients receiving rehabilitation protocols that included TENS exhibited greater improvements across clinical grading scales and electrophysiological measures compared with those receiving standard therapy alone. The multimodal rehabilitation group showed the largest magnitude of functional recovery, reflected by improved facial symmetry, voluntary movement, patient-reported physical and social function, and more favorable electromyographic patterns. These associations remained consistent after adjustment for potential confounders. Conclusions In this retrospective cohort, postoperative rehabilitation strategies incorporating electrical stimulation were associated with enhanced functional and electrophysiological recovery after facial nerve reconstruction. Multimodal rehabilitation approaches may offer added translational value in clinical neurorehabilitation following CPA tumor surgery. Prospective studies are warranted to further refine and validate optimized rehabilitation protocols.

Collaborative robots, or cobots, are increasingly integrated into various industrial and service settings to work efficiently and safely alongside humans. However, for effective human-robot collaboration, robots must reason based on human factors such as motivation level and aggression level. This paper proposes an approach for decision-making in human-robot collaborative (HRC) environments utilizing stochastic modeling. By leveraging probabilistic models and control strategies, the proposed method aims to anticipate human actions and emotions, enabling cobots to adapt their behavior accordingly. So far, most of the research has been done to detect the intentions of human co-workers. This paper discusses the theoretical framework, implementation strategies, simulation results, and potential applications of the bilateral collaboration approach for safety and efficiency in collaborative robotics.

While research on AI agents focuses on enabling them to operate graphical user interfaces, the most effective and widely adopted agent tools in practice are terminal-based. We argue that this convergence is not coincidental. It reflects three design properties central to effective human-AI-UI collaboration: representational compatibility between agent and interface, transparency of agent actions within the interaction medium, and low barriers to entry for human participants. We ground each property in established HCI theory, show how terminal-based tools satisfy them by default, and argue that any modality, including graphical and spatial interfaces, must be deliberately engineered to achieve them. Rather than a legacy artifact, the terminal serves as a design exemplar whose properties any agent-facing modality must replicate.

Right heart failure (RHF) remains an under-recognized yet devastating condition in critically ill and chronic patients, frequently complicating cardiac surgery, pulmonary embolism, advanced heart failure, sepsis and left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation. Despite growing awareness, clinical decision making is still hampered by the complex pathophysiology, limitations in diagnosis and a fragmented therapeutic landscape. In recent years, progress in hemodynamic phenotyping, advanced echocardiographic and biomarker-based assessment, and the development of mechanical circulatory support (MCS) systems, including percutaneous and surgical right ventricle assist devices (RVAD), veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (V-A ECMO), Impella RP (right percutaneous) or BiPella (Impella CP/5.0/5.5 + Impella RP) has expanded the armamentarium for managing RHF. This review synthetizes current evidences on the anatomical, physiological and molecular underpinnings of RHF, delineates the distinction and continuum between acute and chronic forms and provides a comparative analysis of diagnostic tools and MCS strategies. By integrating mechanistic insights with emerging clinical frameworks, the review aims to support earlier recognition, tailored management and innovative therapeutic approaches for this high-risk population.

In dentistry, surface electromyography (sEMG) is currently used in both clinical and research fields to study the electrical activity of the masticatory muscles, such as the anterior Temporals and Masseters, which are easily accessible. Due to biological and technical factors that can alter the capture of the sEMG signal, comparing recordings obtained from the same subject at different days, with electrode replacement, can be challenging, thus complicating inter- and intra-subject sEMG comparisons. In the present study, sEMG activity of the masticatory muscles during maximum teeth clenching was simultaneously recorded using two different electrode configurations (A and B) to simulate different electrodes positioning as may occur between appointments. Raw sEMG signals and standardised indexes based on acquisitions from configurations A and B were compared. The position of the electrodes significantly affected the sEMG raw potentials of the masticatory muscles during maximum teeth clenching, while standardised indexes were not influenced by electrode positioning.

Scaling robotics data collection is critical to advancing general-purpose robots. Current approaches often rely on teleoperated demonstrations which are difficult to scale. We propose a novel data collection method that eliminates the need for robotics hardware by leveraging human video demonstrations. By training imitation learning policies on this human data, our approach enables zero-shot deployment on robots without collecting any robot-specific data. To bridge the embodiment gap between human and robot appearances, we utilize a data editing approach on the input observations that aligns the image distributions between training data on humans and test data on robots. Our method significantly reduces the cost of diverse data collection by allowing anyone with an RGBD camera to contribute. We demonstrate that our approach works in diverse, unseen environments and on varied tasks.

Hybrid paper interfaces leverage augmented reality to combine the desired tangibility of paper documents with the affordances of interactive digital media. Typically, virtual content can be embedded through direct links (e.g., QR codes); however, this impacts the aesthetics of the paper print and limits the available visual content space. To address this problem, we present Imprinto, an infrared inkjet watermarking technique that allows for invisible content embeddings only by using off-the-shelf IR inks and a camera. Imprinto was established through a psychophysical experiment, studying how much IR ink can be used while remaining invisible to users regardless of background color. We demonstrate that we can detect invisible IR content through our machine learning pipeline, and we developed an authoring tool that optimizes the amount of IR ink on the color regions of an input document for machine and human detectability. Finally, we demonstrate several applications, including augmenting paper documents and objects.

Pointing is a key mode of interaction with robots, yet most prior work has focused on recognition rather than generation. We present a motion capture dataset of human pointing gestures covering diverse styles, handedness, and spatial targets. Using reinforcement learning with motion imitation, we train policies that reproduce human-like pointing while maximizing precision. Results show our approach enables context-aware pointing behaviors in simulation, balancing task performance with natural dynamics.

Personas have been widely used to understand and communicate user needs in human-centred design. Despite their utility, they may fail to meet the demands of iterative workflows due to their static nature, limited engagement, and inability to adapt to evolving design needs. Recent advances in large language models (LLMs) pave the way for more engaging and adaptive approaches to user representation. This paper introduces Interactive Virtual Personas (IVPs): multimodal, LLM-driven, conversational user simulations that designers can interview, brainstorm with, and gather feedback from in real time via voice interface. We conducted a qualitative study with eight professional UX designers, employing an IVP named "Alice" across three design activities: user research, ideation, and prototype evaluation. Our findings demonstrate the potential of IVPs to expedite information gathering, inspire design solutions, and provide rapid user-like feedback. However, designers raised concerns about biases, over-optimism, the challenge of ensuring authenticity without real stakeholder input, and the inability of the IVP to fully replicate the nuances of human interaction. Our participants emphasised that IVPs should be viewed as a complement to, not a replacement for, real user engagement. We discuss strategies for prompt engineering, human-in-the-loop integration, and ethical considerations for effective and responsible IVP use in design. Finally, our work contributes to the growing body of research on generative AI in the design process by providing insights into UX designers' experiences of LLM-powered interactive personas.

This chapter explores human creativity in AI-assisted learning environments through the lens of student agency. We begin by examining four theoretical perspectives on agency, including instrumental, effortful, dynamically emergent, and authorial agency, and analyze how each frames the relationship between agency and creativity. Under each theoretical perspective, we discuss how the integration of generative AI (GenAI) tools reshapes these dynamics by altering students' roles in cognitive, social, and creative processes. In the second part, we introduce a theoretical framework for AI agentic engagement, contextualizing agency within specific cognitive, relational, and ethical dynamics introduced by GenAI tools. This framework is linked to the concept of Mini-c creativity, emphasizing personal relevance and self-directed learning. Together, these perspectives support a shift from viewing creativity as product-oriented to understanding it as a process of agentive participation and meaning-making. We conclude with two directions for future research focused on the creative process and performance in AI-assisted learning.

''Fruitless Lycium barbarum leaf (FLBL) are the leaves of a new variety of Lycium barbarum in Ningxia, which exhibit higher content of various nutrients, trace elements, and bioactive substances compared to Lycium barbarum fruits and leaves. However, the health and medicinal value as well as the by-products derived from FLBL have not received sufficient attention, and the contents of main components vary at different harvesting periods. Therefore, for the first time this study aimed to establish high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) fingerprints and determine the contents of four phenolic acid bioactive substances during different harvesting periods in order to provide an experimental basis for cultivation, collection, and research on FLBL. The results revealed 17 common peaks among 10 batches samples with a similarity ranging from 0.71 to 0.976. The linear relationships R2 for catechin, epicatechin-catechin, chlorogenic acid, and rutin were determined as 0.9999 each; meanwhile, the average recovery rate ranged from 93.92 % to 120.11 %, with an RSD between 0.91 % and 2.82 %. The precision, repeatability stability (24 h), and recovery rate met the requirements outlined in ''Chinese Pharmacopoeia''. Catechin, epicatechin, and rutin exhibited higher levels from June to August, while chlorogenic acid showed increased levels from July to September. The findings serve as a foundation for quality control measures such as identifying optimal harvest periods or facilitating development and production processes related to Ningxia FLBL.''

Abstract Background Mercury chloride (HgCl2) damages tissues it comes in contact with in sufficient concentration. This study evaluated the protective effects of n-butanol fraction of Phoenix dactylifera (BFPD) on mercury-triggered liver toxicity in Wistar rats. 25 male rats were divided into 5 groups of 5 rats each. Group I was administered 2 ml/kg of distilled water; group II was administered 5 mg/kg of HgCl2; group III was administered 500 mg/kg of BFPD + 5 mg/kg of HgCl2; group IV was administered 1000 mg/kg of BFPD + 5 mg/kg of HgCl2, while group V was administered 100 mg/kg of silymarin + 5 mg/kg of HgCl2. orally for 2 weeks. The rats were euthanized and liver tissue blood samples were collected for histological, histochemical, stereological, immunohistochemical, molecular, and biochemical studies. Results The results revealed that HgCl2 induced oxidative stress in the rats evident by histoarchitectural distortions and altered levels of liver enzymes, proteins, and oxidative stress biomarkers when compared to the control. However, BFPD treatment restored these changes. Glutathione peroxidase levels decreased (p < 0.05) in the HgCl2−treated group when compared to the control and BFPD-treated groups. HgCl2 group revealed reduced reactivity with histochemical and immunohistochemical stains (Masson’s Trichrome and B cell Lymphoma 2) when compared to the control, with a significant decrease in quantified liver Bcl-2 stain intensity when compared to the silymarin-treated group. BFPD administration revealed normal staining intensity comparable to the control. HgCl2 administration revealed a remarked decrease in the number of hepatocytes when compared to the control, BFPD, and silymarin groups. BFPD preserved (p < 0.05) the stereological features when compared to the HgCl2-treated group. GPx activity in the liver decreased (p < 0.05) with HgCl2 administration when compared to the control and silymarin-treated groups. BFPD attenuated GPx gene activity to levels similar to the control indicating some level of amelioration against HgCl2-induced toxicity. Conclusions The ability of BFPD to mitigate HgCl2 triggered liver alterations could be attributed to the antioxidant property of its flavonoid content. Therefore, BFPD may be a potential candidate for treating and managing liver-induced mercury intoxication.

Evidence shows that tropomodulin 1 (TMOD1) is a powerful diagnostic marker in the progression of several cancer types. However, the regulatory mechanism of TMOD1 in tumor progression is still unclear. Here, we showed that TMOD1 was highly expressed in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) specimens, and TMOD1-silencing inhibited cell proliferation by inducing autophagy in AML THP-1 and MOLM-13 cells. Mechanistically, the C-terminal region of TMOD1 directly bound to KPNA2, and TMOD1-overexpression promoted KPNA2 ubiquitylation and reduced KPNA2 levels. In contrast, TMOD1-silencing increased KPNA2 levels and facilitated the nuclear transfer of KPNA2, then subsequently induced autophagy and inhibited cell proliferation by increasing the nucleocytoplasmic transport of p53 and AMPK activation. KPNA2/p53 inhibitors attenuated autophagy induced by silencing TMOD1 in AML cells. Silencing TMOD1 also inhibited tumor growth by elevating KPNA2-mediated autophagy in nude mice bearing MOLM-13 xenografts. Collectively, our data demonstrated that TMOD1 could be a novel therapeutic target for AML treatment.
