Discrimination and Reactive Transnationalism Among Recent Italian, Polish, Turkish, and Syrian Immigrants in Germany

Daniel Herda

Reactive transnationalism involves immigrants responding to hostility in the receiving society by increasing their connection and interaction with their origin country. The current study builds upon previous examinations of this phenomenon by considering whether direct experience is the only form of discrimination that matters. It examines whether the mere perception of unfairness—no first‑hand experience required—is also associated with transnational behaviors. Data from the 2019 Recent Immigration Processes and Early Integration Trajectories in Germany survey are used to analyze remittance and political transnationalism patterns among Turkish, Syrian, Polish, and Italian immigrants. Results confirm the reactive transnationalism association in the German context and also introduce greater nuance into our understanding. For one, while direct exposure to hostility matters, it is not required. Transnationalism is also linked to the general perception that one’s group is treated unfairly. Further, the results indicate that a reactive political transnationalism association is strongest among Turkish respondents, demonstrating significant variation across groups. The implications of these results for future research are discussed.

Off-street Parking in 15 US Cities

Shirin Qiam, Lewis J. Lehe

This study introduces a novel dataset of parking lot boundaries covering fifteen US cities. We generate this dataset using a deep learning segmentation model described in Qiam et al. (2025), and a subsequent post-processing workflow. The dataset, publicly available in shapefile format, enables spatial analysis of parking land use at both inter- and intra-city levels. To estimate the share of off-street land used for off-street parking, we link these polygons with tax parcel datasets, in order to exclude streets and public sidewalks. Off-street surface parking accounts for as little as 3.4% of parcel land in Oakland and as much as 10.7% in Anaheim, with central business districts ranging from 2.3% in Boston to 31.7% in Tulsa.

Visualising Sustainable Development Goals progress of China’s coastal cities using circular-kaleidoscope charts

Mingbao Chen, Zhibin Xu

Cities are the frontiers of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted in the United Nations 2030 Agenda. Although quantitative methods have been applied to assess cities’ sustainability progress, knowledge gaps exist in the differences between inland and coastal cities’ performance and their internal variations against common standards. Using the Voronoi-based kaleidoscope diagram embedded in two circular plots, the article visualises the overall sustainability progress of China’s inland and coastal cities in economy, society, biosphere and partnership. By measuring overall progress with circular length and individual scores with kaleidoscope area size, triple inland-coastal gaps and trifold intracoastal inequalities were highlighted, as well as city types characterised by economy-society balance and land–sea relation. References for implementing sustainable development transformations for coastal cities were derived, along with the circular-kaleidoscope diagram’s potential for checking the pulse of cities’ performances in further uses and finishing the circle.

Nearshoring to Mexico and US Supply Chain Resilience as a Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic

Thomas Stringer, Monserrat Ramírez-Melgarejo

The COVID-19 pandemic prompted global supply chain upheavals, triggering shortages and delays. Governments and companies sought resilient strategies for future crises. A US response was "nearshoring," shifting manufacturing from China to Mexico. Analyzing trade data from 2019 to 2023, this study examines if this shift occurred and its sectoral impact. Both countries initially rebounded post-Q1 2020 disruptions. However, China's exports waned, while Mexico's surged, surpassing China by March 2023. Sectors like machinery and electrical components showed similar trends. Mexico excelled in US supply, while China's dominance eroded, affirming the nearshoring hypothesis. Proximity significantly bolstered long-term supply chain resilience.

Regional Specificity of Tourism Potential Development: Sociological Analysis

Olga V. Rogach, Elena V. Frolova

Introduction. The development of the tourist potential of Russian territories is one of the priority state tasks in modern conditions. The purpose of the article is to study the regional specifics of the development of tourism potential in the Russian Federation, a sociological analysis of its key elements in the assessments of municipal leaders. Materials and Methods. The key research method was a questionnaire survey of heads of local self-government bodies of the Russian Federation (n = 306). At the first stage, questionnaires were sent out by e-mail with representation from all federal districts of the Russian Federation. At the second stage, the analysis of linear distributions and correlation analysis of empirically significant variables (grouping of answers by regions and federal districts of the Russian Federation) were carried out. The use of a set of analytical procedures has made it possible to identify the regional specifics of the development of the tourism potential of the territories. The results were processed using SPSS. Results. The results of the study have made it possible to identify problems in the development of the tourist potential of Russian territories, both in terms of basic and additional resources. The hypothesis about the predominance of tourist resources aimed at satisfying the “average” consumer demands of the tourist is confirmed. The results of the study have shown a decrease in ratings for economy class catering facilities (average rating 3.02 out of 5), the presence of hostels (1.87 out of 5), as well as the lack of conditions to meet the interests of high-income tourists (in terms of “luxury class restaurants” the average score is 2.21 out of 5). The study revealed an insufficient level of development of additional tourist resources that ensure the realization of the differentiated needs of various social groups. Discussion and Conclusion. It is concluded that it is expedient to support entrepreneurial initiatives aimed at creating tourism products and services, both in the “economy” and “luxury” segments, the formation of a recognizable image of the territories as part of the promotion of their social resources. The results obtained can be used in the activities of the authorities in the development of strategies for the development of regional tourism.

History and Memory of Dissident Sexualities from Latin America

Benito Bisso Schmidt, Rubens Mascarenhas Neto

This article focuses on Red Latinoamericana de Archivos, Museos, Acervos y Investigadores LGBTQIA+ (AMAI LGBTQIA+), a network composed of researchers and institutions related to LGBTQIA+ memory in Latin America, founded in 2019. First, the authors analyse the network’s creation arising from the discontent of some participants of the June 2019 Archives, Libraries, Museums and Special Collections (ALMS) Conference, in Berlin, who felt bothered by the lack of attention given to subaltern perspectives on LGBTQIA+ history and memory. Next, the authors describe and analyse the network’s first year of activities communicated through its Facebook group. Multiple challenges arose from creating a network with members from different national origins, languages, and identities, especially considering the conservative political contexts of several Latin American countries and the social distancing measures imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Next, the authors present a general profile of the network’s members and a map of partner institutions. Finally, the article points out some challenges to the network’s continuity and its desire to render Latin America more visible in the broader panorama of global LGBTQIA+ history. The authors conclude by highlighting the importance of AMAI LGBTQIA+ in stimulating further discussions about the participation of global-south researchers and perspectives on global queer history initiatives.

Teaching Pro-Environmental Behavior: A Challenge in Indonesian Schools

Ratna Djuwita, Aditya Benyamin

Although most researchers agree that environmental education is very important to develop pro-environmental behavior (PEB) in children, it is uncertain whether environmental education has positive outcomes, especially in Indonesian schools. This study tried to get some insight into whether green school students will have a higher nature relatedness and thus will behave more environmentally friendly, compared with students from schools with a regular national curriculum. In this study, 304 elementary public schools’ students and 229 green schools’ students participated. Data were collected through self-report scale, behavioral observation and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). The result shows that green school student’s, as well as children from public school, do not differ in their appreciation and understanding of their interconnectedness with all other living things on the earth. In other words, their nature relatedness (NR) are relatively similar. As hypothesized, if faced with the choice to act environmentally friendly, the PEB of green school students were significantly higher than public school students. But interestingly, information from FGD reveals that green school children PEB is not based on knowledge or concern for the environment, but rather a result of habituation and social modelling of their friends. On the other hand, public schools students have the knowledge, but they do not implement it in daily lives because they are not used to do it. It is concluded that environmental education curriculum does have a role in shaping students PEB, but to develop a sustainable PEB in young children, schools should focus on environmental knowledge, to develop and internalized pro-environmental value, and they should also develop ways to habituate PEB.

Sorgende Gemeinschaften?

Mike Laufenberg

Green Infrastructure and German Landscape Planning: A Comparison of Approaches

Catalina VIEIRA MEJÍA, Liubov SHIROTOVA, Igor Fernando MARQUES DE ALMEIDA

A variety of similarities between green infrastructure and the German landscape planning can be found in comparing the approaches of the two planning instruments. Principles of green infrastructure such as multifunctionality, the multi-scale approach and connectivity show correspondences with landscape planning elements. However, some differences are apparent. The objective of this paper is to determine whether the main aims of these two frameworks overlap. It also seeks to deduce what benefits from ecosystem services could be provided by integrating the green infrastructure approach into the German landscape planning system. The results show that the green infrastructure concept is not well-known in German planning practice, although its principles are generally implemented through traditional landscape planning. Nevertheless, green infrastructure could act as a supplementary approach to current landscape planning practices by improving public acceptance and strengthening the social focus of the current landscape planning system.

Risk Factors Determining the Occurrence of Obesity among Women in the Zamość County

Tomasz Derewiecki, Krzysztof Mroczek, Małgorzata Mroczek et al.

The progress of civilization in Europe and many countries throughout the world has contributed to changing the way of life for entire societies. It has caused a dramatic increase in the rate of obesity. Overweight and obesity make a timeless problem. The twenty-first-century man, apart from deriving a hedonistic pleasure from eating, avoids any physical effort, which causes decreasing physical fitness and increasing of body mass. The goal of the present paper is the analysis of risk factors determining occurrence of obesity among women. An author’s survey was conducted on a sample of 604 women in Zamość county, Poland. The results were statistically analyzed, on the level of significance of p < 0,05. 22,52% of the studied group distinguished themselves with a BMI index from 25 to 30 (overweight ), whereas 7,95% had a BMI > 30, indicating obesity. The analysis of results showed that the most exposed to being overweight and obesity are women over 65 years old, with primary education or vocational training and a sedentary nature of work. Their place of dwelling had no effect on their body weight. Promoting an active way of life would be appropriate, oriented for maintaining a proper body mass. Society should be made aware of the importance of this problem and consequences of lack of knowledge on it.

THE IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGICAL GROWTH ON ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE IN INDONESIA

Hery Ferdinan

Abstract Technology in the globalization era is difficult to be avoided in daily life. This study aims to estimate the impact of technological growth on economic performance in Indonesia using a Total Factor Productivity (TFP) method. The results indicate that technological growth in Indonesia during 1981-2012 is 0.87 percent, contributes up to 30.48 percent to economic growth. The results of econometric analysis suggest that technological growth will increase not only economic growth but also the unemployment rate, implying that technological growth in Indonesia creates jobs destruction than jobs creation. Keywords: Technological growth, TFP, economic growth, unemployment rate JEL classification number: O11, O47 Abstrak Teknologi di era globalisasi sulit untuk dihindarkan dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Stigmatisation of Cities. The Vulnerability of Local Identities

Thomas Bürk, Manfred Kühn, Hanna Sommer

The vulnerability of cities is often discussed in terms of physical hazards and disasters such as earthquakes, floods or terrorist attacks. In contrast, this paper opens up a social-constructivist perspective, describing the vulnerability of cities as a result of discursive based communications. The article looks at the extent to which collective identities in cities are vulnerable to stigmatisation in the media and the ways in which local actors find to cope with this. Key terms of stigma and identity research are presented and the transferability of stigma and identity concepts of social groups to cities is discussed. Taking the examples of Sangerhausen and Pirmasens, which have for several decades been affected by peripheralisation, the article describes stigma processes in the national media, how this is addressed in the city and what coping strategies the actors have developed. Finally the key findings are summarised and conclusions with regard to the vulnerability of collective identities are interpreted.
