Methodology for Business Intelligence Solutions in Internet Banking Companies

Alex Escalante Viteri, Javier Gamboa Cruzado, Leonidas Asto Huaman

Business intelligence in the banking industry has been studied extensively in the last decade; however, business executives still do not perceive efficiency in the decision-making process since the management and treatment of information are very timeconsuming for the deliverer, generating costs in the process. On the other hand, there is no formal methodology for developing business intelligence solutions in this sector. This work aims to optimize decision-making in a business unit that works with internet banking companies, reducing the time, the number of people, and the costs involved in decision-making. To meet the objective, basic and applied research was conducted. The basic research allowed the construction of a new methodology from a study of critical success factors and approaches from the business intelligence literature. The applied research involved the implementation of a business intelligence solution applying the new methodology in a pre-experimental study. Thirty decision-making processes were analyzed using pre-test and post-test data. Tools such as a stopwatch and observation were used to collect and record data on time spent, the number of people, and the decision-making costs. This information was processed in the specialized Minitab18 statistical software, which allowed the observation and confirmation of relevant results regarding time reduction, the number of people, and the costs generated. Therefore, it was concluded that the business intelligence solution, applying the new methodology, optimized decision making in the business unit that works with internet banking for companies.

Measuring the Association between Emotional and Financial Employee Well-Being and Work Satisfaction

Nicoleta Valentina FLOREA, Gabriel CROITORU, Alina Stefania STROE

The article provides a concise yet significant overview of the emotional and financial well-being of employees at work, categorized as soft and hard aspects. Well-being is a multidisciplinary topic, now seen at the workplace as a factor in performance. Employee well-being is crucial not only for the individuals but also for the organizations, with a correlation between emotional and financial well-being and job satisfaction being assessed. Additionally, the study examined the impact of three variables - gender, age, and organization - on job satisfaction. The analysis, utilizing SPAS and R square, revealed that there is no significant association between gender (2.3%), age (0.9%), and organization (0.5%) and job satisfaction. Only a small percentage, ranging from 0.5% to 2.3%, of the variance in job satisfaction can be explained by these three variables. Furthermore, it was found that the emotional and financial well-being of employees significantly influences job satisfaction. A substantial 99.5% of the variance in these two types of well-being is linked to job satisfaction, making them strong predictors. This leads to increased job satisfaction among employees, resulting in enhanced performance at work. This mutually beneficial scenario is achieved through the use of simulation and forecasting, two methods that are both simple and complex. Organizations and their managers can use this as a starting point to comprehend the soft and hard aspects of achieving well-being and satisfaction at work to enhance performance.

Taxonomy of the business models of successful pharmaceutical products in Iran with a focus on competitive drugs in the growth phase

Ali Asgar Halvaei, Mahdi Ebrahimi

Introduction: Today, one of the best tools available for value chain engineering is applying the practical lessons of business models. By analyzing a business model, the processes of development, presentation and receipt of value by a company can be improved. Although many companies operating in different industries of the country have increasingly turned to the analysis of their business models, the issue is moving forward at a lower speed in the pharmaceutical industry. Numerous new business models have been developed or renovated in today’s changing business environment. The development and renovation of new business models are not a matter of choice but a necessity in order to survive in an environment whose rules of the game are constantly changing. In such a situation, the greatest challenge posed to organizations is developing a framework through which an accurate understanding of the dimensions and components of their business models can be achieved and a point of reference can be offered to compare their business models with those of the competing companies to enable innovation and outperformance. The main focus of this study is to find a practical framework for pharmaceutical companies so as to identify and compare the key features of their business models with those of active competitors, hence to understand the strengths and positive qualities of other models and overcoming their weaknesses. In this study, the latest scientific findings about the business models of pharmaceutical companies are presented, and the common types of these business models are identified using taxonomy (experimental typology) to achieve a more comprehensive and accurate view of the dynamics of this business model in companies.Methodology: The statistical population of this study included all the Iranian companies producing human drugs that have had a competitive product in the growth stage. The study was conducted in two phases, content analysis and quantitative phase. Initially, semi-structured interviews during the content analysis phase revealed a comprehensive framework for the dimensions and components of the business model of Iranian pharmaceutical companies, and then, through quantitative surveys and in-person questionnaires, the business model of each pharmaceutical company was identified. The sampling method in the qualitative part of the research was judged after 19 theoretical saturation interviews, and the quantitative research became available. By using the PASS software, an optimal sample of 40 companies was adopted. In this study, the empirical classification (taxonomy) approach, rather than the ideal classification (typology), was used to identify various business models. In clustering methods, since the data are classified irrespective of any presupposition or predetermined framework, the fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering algorithm serves as the most appropriate tool to attain the typological objective of this study. Results and Discussion: Finally, by fuzzy clustering with the MATLAB software, four distinct variants of the business model were identified for the pharmaceutical companies, each having significant differences in the key features of the business models with the other types. These four types included Diverse Effectiveness, Concentrated Effectiveness, Diverse Effectiveness, Concentrated Effectiveness. The identified types have specific similarities and differences in each business model dimension and component which can be concisely compared as follows based on their key features including concentration on quality rather than on efficiency, extent of relationships in various areas such as sales, marketing, and raw material supply. Conclusion: The competitive pharmaceutical products in Iran can be categorized in four distinct types in terms of the characteristics of their business model. These models have different characteristics in terms of the amount of value proposition, the processes of shaping the value architecture, the mechanisms for interaction with different groups of customers and value acquisition methods. Finally, these types of business models were named based on their proprietary features as: diversified effective, focused effective, diversified efficient and focused efficient. The first business model type was labeled “diversified effective” as it is greatly focused on quality and extensive relationships with various stakeholders of the value chain. Companies such as CinnaGen, Exir, SobhanDarou, DarouPakhsh, Osvah, and Samisaz had the greatest degree of membership in this business model type. The second type was labeled “diversified efficient” as it is highly concentrated on cost control and extensive relationship maintenance with the value chain stakeholders. Companies such as ParsDarou, TehranShimi, AlborzDarou, TehranDarou, and Actoverco had the greatest degree of membership in this business model type. The third type was labeled “focused efficient” and included such pharmaceutical companies as Hakim, CaspianTamin, Sepidaj, Loghman, and Jalinous which had the greatest degree of membership in this business model type. Finally, the fourth type was labeled “focused effective” and involved companies such as Shafa, Ronak, DinehIran, and Modava with the greatest degree of membership therein.

Secure Healthcare Record Sharing Mechanism with Blockchain

Ghulam Qadar Butt, Toqeer Ali Sayed, Rabia Riaz et al.

The transfer of information is a demanding issue, particularly due to the presence of a large number of eavesdroppers on communication channels. Sharing medical service records between different clinical jobs is a basic and testing research topic. The particular characteristics of blockchains have attracted a large amount of attention and resulted in revolutionary changes to various business applications, including medical care. A blockchain is based on a distributed ledger, which tends to improve cyber security. A number of proposals have been made with respect to the sharing of basic medical records using a blockchain without needing earlier information or the trust of patients. Specialist service providers and insurance agencies are not secure against data breaches. The safe sharing of clinical records between different countries, to ensure an incorporated and universal medical service, is also a significant issue for patients who travel. The medical data of patients normally reside on different healthcare units around the world, thus raising many concerns. Firstly, a patient’s history of treatment by different physicians is not accessible to the doctor in a single location. Secondly, it is very difficult to secure widespread data residing in different locations. This study proposed record sharing in a chain-like structure, in which every record is globally connected to the others, based on a blockchain under the suggestions and recommendations of the HL7 standards. This study focused on making medical data available, especially of patients who travel in different countries, for a specific period of time after validating the required authentication. Authorization and authentication are performed on the Shibboleth identity management system with the involvement of patient in the sanction process, thereby revealing the patient data for the specific period of time. The proposed approach improves the performance with respect to other record sharing systems, e.g., it reduces the time to read, write, delete, and revoke a record by a noticeable margin. The proposed system takes around three seconds to upload and 7.5 s to download 250 Mb of data, which can contain up to sixteen documents, over a stable network connection. The system has a latency of 413.76 ms when retrieving 100 records, compared to 447.9 and 459.3 ms in previous systems. Thus, the proposed system improved the performance and ensured seclusion by using a blockchain.

A Fault Tolerant Elastic Resource Management Framework Towards High Availability of Cloud Services

Deepika Saxena, Ishu Gupta, Ashutosh Kumar Singh et al.

Cloud computing has become inevitable for every digital service which has exponentially increased its usage. However, a tremendous surge in cloud resource demand stave off service availability resulting into outages, performance degradation, load imbalance, and excessive power-consumption. The existing approaches mainly attempt to address the problem by using multi-cloud and running multiple replicas of a virtual machine (VM) which accounts for high operational-cost. This paper proposes a Fault Tolerant Elastic Resource Management (FT-ERM) framework that addresses aforementioned problem from a different perspective by inducing high-availability in servers and VMs. Specifically, (1) an online failure predictor is developed to anticipate failure-prone VMs based on predicted resource contention; (2) the operational status of server is monitored with the help of power analyser, resource estimator and thermal analyser to identify any failure due to overloading and overheating of servers proactively; and (3) failure-prone VMs are assigned to proposed fault-tolerance unit composed of decision matrix and safe box to trigger VM migration and handle any outage beforehand while maintaining desired level of availability for cloud users. The proposed framework is evaluated and compared against state-of-the-arts by executing experiments using two real-world datasets. FT-ERM improved the availability of the services up to 34.47% and scales down VM-migration and power-consumption up to 88.6% and 62.4%, respectively over without FT-ERM approach.

Optimal Lockdown Management using Short Term COVID-19 Prediction Model

Shuvrangshu Jana, Debasish Ghose

This paper proposes optimal lockdown management policies based on short-term prediction of active COVID-19 confirmed cases to ensure the availability of critical medical resources. The optimal time to start the lockdown from the current time is obtained after maximizing a cost function considering economic value subject to constraints of availability of medical resources, and maximum allowable value of daily growth rate and Test Positive Ratio. The estimated value of required medical resources is calculated as a function of total active cases. The predicted value of active cases is calculated using an adaptive short-term prediction model. The proposed approach can be easily implementable by a local authority. An optimal lockdown case study for Delhi during the second wave in the month of April 2021 is presented using the proposed formulation.

Why it takes a village to manage and share data

Christine L. Borgman, Philip E. Bourne

Implementation plans for the National Institutes of Health policy for data management and sharing, which takes effect in 2023, provide an opportunity to reflect on the stakeholders, infrastructures, practice, economics, and sustainability of data sharing. Responsibility for fulfilling data sharing requirements tends to fall on principal investigators, whereas it takes a village of stakeholders to construct, manage, and sustain the necessary knowledge infrastructure for disseminating data products. Individual scientists have mixed incentives, and many disincentives to share data, all of which vary by research domain, methods, resources, and other factors. Motivations and investments for data sharing also vary widely among academic institutional stakeholders such as university leadership, research computing, libraries, and individual schools and departments. Stakeholder concerns are interdependent along many dimensions, seven of which are explored: what data to share; context and credit; discovery; methods and training; intellectual property; data science programs; and international tensions. Data sharing is not a simple matter of individual practice, but one of infrastructure, institutions, and economics. Governments, funding agencies, and international science organizations all will need to invest in commons approaches for data sharing to develop into a sustainable international ecosystem.

Insurance Business and Sustainable Development

Dietmar Pfeifer, Vivien Langen

In this study, we will discuss recent developments in risk management of the global financial and insurance business with respect to sustainable development. So far climate change aspects have been the dominant aspect in managing sustainability risks and opportunities, accompanied by the development of several legislative initiatives triggered by supervisory authorities. However, a sole concentration on these aspects misses out other important economic and social facets of sustainable development goals formulated by the UN. Such aspects have very recently come into the focus of the European Committee concerning the Solvency II project for the European insurance industry. Clearly the new legislative expectations can be better handled by larger insurance companies and holdings than by small- and medium-sized mutual insurance companies which are numerous in central Europe, due to their historic development starting in the late medieval ages and early modern times. We therefore also concentrate on strategies within the risk management of such small- and medium-sized enterprises that can be achieved without much effort, in particular those that are not directly related to climate change.

Action Set Based Policy Optimization for Safe Power Grid Management

Bo Zhou, Hongsheng Zeng, Yuecheng Liu et al.

Maintaining the stability of the modern power grid is becoming increasingly difficult due to fluctuating power consumption, unstable power supply coming from renewable energies, and unpredictable accidents such as man-made and natural disasters. As the operation on the power grid must consider its impact on future stability, reinforcement learning (RL) has been employed to provide sequential decision-making in power grid management. However, existing methods have not considered the environmental constraints. As a result, the learned policy has risk of selecting actions that violate the constraints in emergencies, which will escalate the issue of overloaded power lines and lead to large-scale blackouts. In this work, we propose a novel method for this problem, which builds on top of the search-based planning algorithm. At the planning stage, the search space is limited to the action set produced by the policy. The selected action strictly follows the constraints by testing its outcome with the simulation function provided by the system. At the learning stage, to address the problem that gradients cannot be propagated to the policy, we introduce Evolutionary Strategies (ES) with black-box policy optimization to improve the policy directly, maximizing the returns of the long run. In NeurIPS 2020 Learning to Run Power Network (L2RPN) competition, our solution safely managed the power grid and ranked first in both tracks.

Stormwater on the Margins: Influence of Race, Gender, and Education on Willingness to Participate in Stormwater Management

Rachel D. Scarlett, Mangala Subramaniam, Sara K. McMillan et al.

Stormwater has immense impacts on urban flooding and water quality, leaving the marginalized and the impoverished disproportionately impacted by and vulnerable to stormwater hazards. However, the environmental health concerns of socially and economically marginalized individuals are largely underestimated. Through regression analysis of data from three longitudinal surveys, this article examines if and how an individual's race, gender, and education level help predict one's concern about and willingness to participate in stormwater management. We found that people of color, women, and less-educated respondents had a greater willingness to participate in stormwater management than White, male, and more-educated respondents, and their concern about local stormwater hazards drove their willingness to participate. Our analysis suggests that physical exposure and high vulnerability to stormwater hazards may shape an individual's concern about and willingness to participate in stormwater management.

Next Generation Models for Portfolio Risk Management: An Approach Using Financial Big Data

Kwangmin Jung, Donggyu Kim, Seunghyeon Yu

This paper proposes a dynamic process of portfolio risk measurement to address potential information loss. The proposed model takes advantage of financial big data to incorporate out-of-target-portfolio information that may be missed when one considers the Value at Risk (VaR) measures only from certain assets of the portfolio. We investigate how the curse of dimensionality can be overcome in the use of financial big data and discuss where and when benefits occur from a large number of assets. In this regard, the proposed approach is the first to suggest the use of financial big data to improve the accuracy of risk analysis. We compare the proposed model with benchmark approaches and empirically show that the use of financial big data improves small portfolio risk analysis. Our findings are useful for portfolio managers and financial regulators, who may seek for an innovation to improve the accuracy of portfolio risk estimation.

Promoting Trustless Computation Through Blockchain Technology

Prateek Pandey, Ratnesh Litoriya

Records, irrespective of their nature (whether electronic or paper-based), are vulnerable to fraud. People's hard-earned money, their personal information, identity, and health are at a higher risk than ever due to the misuse of technology in doing forgery. However, the technology can also be used as an answer to counteracting against fraudulence prevalent in affairs from every walk of life. This short paper attempts to present the blockchain technology as a solution to overcome the menace of forgery by promoting trustless computing in business transactions. The paper explains the blockchain technology and a variety of its implementation through five different use cases in the field of drug supply chain, health insurance, land record management, courier services, and immigration records. The immigration blockchain is also proposed as a solution to check pandemic like the coronavirus (COVID-19) effectively. The implementation of the Blockchain is performed using a locally built IBM’s hyper-ledger fabric-based platform, and Ethereum public platform. The results are encouraging enough to substitute existing business operations using Blockchain-based solutions.

State-Owned Enterprises in the Context of Contemporary Transformations

Ioana-Andreea CIOLOMIC, Ioana Natalia BELEIU

The importance of decentralised entities strongly increased in the recent period of time due to a stringent need for effective, efficient and high quality public services (Papenfuss and Schmidt, 2015). The aim of the paper is to investigate the difficulties and challenging of self-regulating techniques faced by state-owned enterprises in the context of contemporary transformations. The research presented in this article is mainly qualitative. By conducting this literature review, our work has achieved a twofold objective of contributing to the current body of knowledge from two perspectives: the debate on the difficulty of including these types of companies in the public or private sector, the governments’ challenges to demonstrate their accountability in the context of state-owned enterprises appearance
