Stronger at Every Age: Together Against Non-Communicable Diseases

Olufunke Ajeigbe, Hawawu Hussein, Phidelia Theresa Doegah et al.

Lifelong health is profoundly shaped by our earliest environments. The Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) framework demonstrates how health, nutrition and nurture from preconception through adolescence determine the trajectory of wellbeing and the risk of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in adulthood. Africa offers a unique lens for examining how nations can intervene early to curb the future burden of NCDs. Across Africa, this understanding arrives at a critical juncture. As the continent faces a rising tide of NCDs, its children, adolescents, and families still hold the power to reshape their lifelong health destinies. Amid rapidly changing social and nutritional landscapes, schools emerge as pivotal platforms for prevention amongst other strategies involving health systems and innovative technologies. Embedding DOHaD principles into school-based health education, by emphasizing optimal nutrition, informed parenting, and the life-long benefits of breastfeeding can equip young people with the knowledge and agency to protect their own health and that of future generations. By translating scientific evidence into culturally grounded, community-driven action, we can cultivate health-literate, resilient societies that thrive free from preventable diseases. Investing in early-life interventions and multisectoral partnerships transforms the fight against NCDs from a reactive struggle to a collective opportunity for health, equity, and sustainable development to ensure that every generation grows stronger at every age united against the lifelong shadow of NCDs.

“Soft Stone” Carving in the USSR: Research Practice and Artistic Criticism of the 1950s–1960s

Sergey Yevgenyevich Vinokurov

This article examines the foundations of the flourishing and almost simultaneous transformation of the art industry in the USSR in the first postwar decades. It focuses on the artistic processing of the so-called “soft stone” (mainly gypsum rocks). Among the main factors of these processes, the author refers to research practice and art criticism, whose activity significantly increased during the period in question and played an important role in changing the status of this branch of the art industry and a noticeable evolution of stylistic trends. The analysis draws upon the first publications devoted to the history of “soft stone” carving. These publications are the only sources in this industry that secured the status of folk art crafts for enterprises. The enterprises include both historical ones, such as factories and cooperatives in Perm and Gorky regions, and those created in the 1930s–1940s, such as factories and plants in Arkhangelsk and Krasnodar regions. Special attention is paid to critical articles published in the magazine Dekorativnoye iskusstvo SSSR at the turn of the 1960s. The article analyses the critics’ perspectives, the scope of the issues they addressed, and their contributions to the advancement of the industry under investigation. Thus, the main topics covered in critical materials include the absence of artistic management at enterprises, the absence or small number of models that corresponded to the time and changing demand. It is concluded that the 1950s–1960s were a period of peak research and creative interest in “soft stone” carving. This era played a significant role in preparing the groundwork for the subsequent flourishing of this branch of the art industry and, as a result, authorial professional trajectories.

Research on the recommendation framework of foreign enterprises from the perspective of multidimensional proximity

Guoqiang Liang, Jiarui Xie, Mengxuan Li et al.

As global economic integration progresses, foreign-funded enterprises play an increasingly crucial role in fostering local economic growth and enhancing industrial development. However, there are not many researches to deal with this aspect in recent years. This study utilizes the multidimensional proximity theory to thoroughly examine the criteria for selecting high-quality foreign-funded companies that are likely to invest in and establish factories in accordance with local conditions during the investment attraction process.First, this study leverages databases such as Wind and Osiris, along with government policy documents, to investigate foreign-funded enterprises and establish a high-quality database. Second, using a two-step method, enterprises aligned with local industrial strategies are identified. Third, a detailed analysis is conducted on key metrics, including industry revenue, concentration (measured by the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index), and geographical distance (calculated using the Haversine formula). Finally, a multi-criteria decision analysis ranks the top five companies as the most suitable candidates for local investment, with the methodology validated through a case study in a district of Beijing. The example results show that the established framework helps local governments identify high-quality foreign-funded enterprises.

Algorithmic Evaluation and the Marginalization of Single Authorship in Management Science

Wei Meng

The decline of single authorship in peer-reviewed journals within the current collaboration-oriented knowledge production framework has prompted deeper reflection on the shifting power structures in academic systems. This paper aims to explore the underlying institutional logic and evaluation mechanisms contributing to the marginalization of single-author research in the management field. It further investigates how the discourse of collaborative advantage conceals structural power redistribution and ideological disembedding. Through an analysis of authorship data from top-tier journals, a critical reading of institutional incentive texts, and an empirical review of authorial configurations, the study building on the work of Harzing, Wuchty, and Lariviere constructs a three-dimensional causal chain: collaboration incentives, responsibility dilution, and originality weakening. Findings suggest that single authorship is not explicitly excluded but is gradually sidelined from central publication channels by funding policies, review practices, and performance metrics. Independent thought is thus structurally marginalized within institutionalized collaboration. The paper advocates for a paradigm shift from instrumental rationality to value-based rationality and calls for the restoration of legitimacy and public value for independent research through reforms in evaluation frameworks, journal governance, and research ethics, aiming to safeguard academic diversity and intellectual autonomy.

Introducing the PIT-plot -- a new tool in the portfolio manager's toolkit

Stig-Johan Wiklund, Magnus Ytterstad

Project portfolio management is an essential process for organizations aiming to optimize the value of their R&D investments. In this article, we introduce a new tool designed to support the prioritization of projects within project portfolio management. We label this tool the PIT-plot, an acronym for Project Impact Tornado plot, with reference to the similarity to the Tornado plot often used for sensitivity analyses. Many traditional practices in portfolio management focus on the properties of the projects available to the portfolio. We are with the PIT-plot changing the perspective and focus not on the properties of the projects themselves, but on the impact that the projects may have on the portfolio. This enables the strategic portfolio management to identify and focus on the projects of largest impact to the portfolio, either for the purpose of risk mitigation or for the purpose of value-adding efforts.

The Impacts of COVID-19 Pandemic on the sustainability of sports tourism destinations: Evidence from Isfahan province in Iran

Marjan Amini, Hassan Bahrololoum, Reza Andam et al.

Purpose: Following the pandemic of Covid-19, many sports tourism destinations rendered stagnant. The ambiguity of the disease and its unanticipated outbreak came as a surprise to policymakers in tourism centers. Many uncertainties about the dimensions and how this disease affects tourism destinations, arise the need to scrutinize it prospectively. Therefore, present study attempts to focus on the "sustainability" component of tourism destinations along with the situation of sports tourism in Isfahan province in the next 10 years (2031). Methods: By adopting a quantitative-qualitative approach and using the futuristic method, data was collected from a number of sources including experts’ interviews, questioning citizens of Isfahan province and documentary studies. Data analysis was performed by open and axial coding, cross-impact analysis and scenario planning. Results: In total, 40 drivers for the future of sports tourism in Isfahan province were identified. Based on four critical uncertainties with two assumptions for each, a total of 16 plausible scenarios were obtained and it was found that the second, seventh and fourteenth scenarios are more likely to occur. In these scenarios, a gradual increase in social responsibility is expected along with the development of technology. However, economic investment and institutional policy making are at their worst, and so we will see the current trend in pandemic control maintains. This issue threatens the sustainability of sports tourism destinations in Isfahan province. Conclusion: The most significant presupposition for achieving sustainability in sports tourism destinations is a review of crisis management policy at national and state levels.

Enterprise Use Cases Combining Knowledge Graphs and Natural Language Processing

Phillip Schneider, Tim Schopf, Juraj Vladika et al.

Knowledge management is a critical challenge for enterprises in today's digital world, as the volume and complexity of data being generated and collected continue to grow incessantly. Knowledge graphs (KG) emerged as a promising solution to this problem by providing a flexible, scalable, and semantically rich way to organize and make sense of data. This paper builds upon a recent survey of the research literature on combining KGs and Natural Language Processing (NLP). Based on selected application scenarios from enterprise context, we discuss synergies that result from such a combination. We cover various approaches from the three core areas of KG construction, reasoning as well as KG-based NLP tasks. In addition to explaining innovative enterprise use cases, we assess their maturity in terms of practical applicability and conclude with an outlook on emergent application areas for the future.

Special Joyce structures and hyperkähler metrics

Iván Tulli

Joyce structures were introduced by T. Bridgeland in the context of the space of stability conditions of a three-dimensional Calabi-Yau category and its associated Donaldson-Thomas invariants. In subsequent work, T. Bridgeland and I. Strachan showed that Joyce structures satisfying a certain non-degeneracy condition encode a complex hyperkähler structure on the tangent bundle of the base of the Joyce structure. In this work we give a definition of an analogous structure over an affine special Kähler (ASK) manifold, which we call a special Joyce structure. Furthermore, we show that it encodes a real hyperkähler (HK) structure on the tangent bundle of the ASK manifold, possibly of indefinite signature. Particular examples include the semi-flat HK metric associated to an ASK manifold (also known as the rigid c-map metric) and the HK metrics associated to certain uncoupled variations of BPS structures over the ASK manifold. Finally, we relate the HK metrics coming from special Joyce structures to HK metrics on the total space of algebraic integrable systems.

An extended scheme of classical special functions

Vyacheslav P. Spiridonov

A unifying scheme of classical special functions of hypergeometric type obeying orthogonality or biorthogonality relations is described. It expands the Askey scheme of classical orthogonal polynomials and its $q$-analogue based on the Askey--Wilson polynomials. On the top, it has two-index biorthogonal functions formed from elliptic hypergeometric series with the absolutely continuous measure determined by the elliptic beta integral. A new result is an inclusion of complex hypergeometric functions into the scheme. Its further potential generalizations are discussed as well.

After the Breach: Incident Response within Enterprises

Sumanth Rao

Enterprises are constantly under attack from sophisticated adversaries. These adversaries use a variety of techniques to first gain access to the enterprise, then spread laterally inside its networks, establish persistence, and finally exfiltrate sensitive data, or hold it for ransom. While historically, enterprises have used different Incident Response systems that monitor hosts, servers, or network devices to detect and report threats, these systems often need many analysts to triage and respond to alerts. However, the immense quantity of alerts to sift through, combined with the potential risk of missing a valid threat makes the task of the analyst challenging. To ease this manual and laborious process, researchers have proposed a variety of systems that perform automated attack investigations. These systems collect data, track causally related events, and present the analyst with an interpretable summary of the attack. In this paper, we present a survey of systems that perform automated attack investigation, and compare them based on their designs, goals, and heuristics. We discuss the challenges faced by these systems, and present a comparison in terms of their effectiveness, practicality, and ability to address these challenges. We conclude by discussing the future of these systems, and the open problems in this area.

Technological capabilities and global value chains: insights from Spanish SMEs in the hotel industry

Isidoro Romero, J. Fernández-Serrano, Rafael Cáceres-Carrasco

PurposeThis study explores the role of international tour operators as the agents assuming the governance and the upgrading of the tourism global value chains (TGVCs), with a special focus on their influence on the development of technological capabilities (TCs) in the hotel industry.Design/methodology/approachThe data used in this article originates from a survey carried out in 2016 on Spanish small and medium-sized hotel companies. An ordinal regression analysis is employed to test the hypotheses proposed in this research.FindingsThis study finds that tour operators exert a positive effect on the technological upgrading process in the hotel industry by stimulating small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to invest in TCs. The causal mechanisms through which these effects take place differ across the various stages of the relationship between hotel companies and tour operators.Practical implicationsThe results have implications both for hotel management in terms of how hotels take advantage of technological upgrading to become more competitive, and for public administrations in terms of what measures can boost the development of hotel TCs in order to increase their added value.Originality/valueTo date, very few studies have analysed the tourism sector based on the influence on the development of TCs of SME hotels by combining GVC concepts and the resource-based view. It is also the first time that the causal mechanisms are shown to explain such influences.

Analytics and machine learning in scheduling and routing research

Ruibin Bai, Zhi-Long Chen, G. Kendall

This special issue largely originated from various discussions during several cross-domain, multi-disciplinary conferences and workshops, especially the 9th Multidisciplinary International Scheduling Conference: Theory and Applications (MISTA2019), which attracted scientists, researchers and practitioners from Computer Science, Operations Research as well as Business and Management. It became increasingly clear that the next stage of digitisation and enterprises digital transformations must call for advanced modelling and computing methodologies that can handle the scale, non-linearity, and uncertainties widely present in complex systems. This special issue was made available to promote the multi-disciplinary studies and focuses on research efforts in hybridising analytical optimisation with machine learning methods when solving difficult scheduling and vehicle routing problems. In the past several years, there has been a growing research effort that attempts to bridge the gap between analyticalmodels and learning-based optimisations. This special issue aims to promote the use of this type of modelling and solution methods in production scheduling and vehicle routing. Specifically, we attract high-quality scheduling and routing research papers that develop or apply integrated analytics and optimisationmethods that are not only flexible and robust under uncertainty but can also generatemodels and solutions that are insightful and (relatively) easy to interpret.

Analyzing components of community-based tourism development in rural areas; case of Marivan and Sarvabad counties

Hojjat Varmazyari, Marzye Fathi, khalil kalantari et al.

Rural tourism as a global industry has been considered an effective solution for rural development. One of the most important issues in rural tourism is that it is community-based. Community-based tourism aims to create economic benefits and improve the quality of life for the local communities. The first and most important principle in community-based tourism is the participation of all stakeholders in the planning and development process. However, in developing countries, its realization has been faced with problems. This research was conducted to analyze the components of community-based rural tourism development in Marivan and Sarvabad cities.Materials and Methods The statistical population was the villagers over 15 years old (women and men, marginal strata, and local elites) in the villages with high potential for tourism in Marivan and Sarvabad Counties of Kurdistan province. A survey method was used to collect information. The data collection tool was a researcher-made questionnaire. In addition to dispersion and centrality statistics, inferential tests of mean comparison and exploratory factor analysis were used to analyze the data.Discussion and ResultsFrom the point of view of different strata of rural society, the most important component of community-based rural tourism development is "inclusiveness and horizontal networking. " In this regard, facilitators and governmental and non-governmental agents of rural tourism should consider a suitable mechanism to strengthen the dialogue and exchange of opinions between the representatives of different sections of the villagers, the participation of the poor sections in the decision-making and planning process, and the division of social responsibilities among the villagers. "Empowerment and strengthening of infrastructures" are the second component that can be effective in developing community-based tourism, especially by creating a sense of collective identity among villagers and education and raising awareness. "Open and demand-oriented innovation" has been the third effective component in developing community-based tourism. In this regard, it is emphasized to use the advice and help of external experts and produce local products based on market needs. The fourth component, "preserving local authenticity," is another important component in developing community-based rural tourism. Strengthening the sense of belonging and employing villagers will preserve and strengthen cultural authenticity and realize the community-based approach. The last extracted component emphasizes profit and fair participation as a condition for realizing the community-based approach in rural tourism development.ConclusionThis study can play a major role in providing correct insight to the authorities on promoting local communities’ participation in the tourism industry and their benefits. Among the solutions that are suggested concerning the topic of the present study is the emphasis on the development of low-cost rural tourism projects, which by providing the gradual and successful entry of marginalized groups into the process of planning and development of rural tourism at the end, lead to the empowerment of the people experiencing poverty and the use of the high potential of rural women.

Digitalization peculiarities of organizations: a case study

V. Vasilev, A. Gapsalamov, E. Akhmetshin et al.

The relevance of this study is caused by the growing role of digital technology in the organization and functioning of socio-economic relations. Universities and enterprises are actively using digital technology to realize their traditional functions. Digital transformation requires the adoption of an adequate government policy for the effective management of modern digital processes. The objective is to conduct a study of the digital transformation of universities and enterprises at the micro and macro levels of the socio-economic system and to formulate some recommendations on improving the efficiency and safety of using digital technologies. As special methods, the authors used the methods of sociological survey and statistical information processing. An institutional approach was used to analyze digitalization processes in the national socio-economic system. The most favorable institutions for the development of digital technologies were identified. A multilevel approach to the analysis of digitalization processes at the personal, organizational and institutional levels was also used. The study revealed a discrepancy in the level of development of the necessary digital competencies between universities and the real sector of the economy. The reason for this was the absence or insufficient development of relevant institutions: trust, competition, entrepreneurship, property rights. Some recommendations were formulated to improve the institutions that promote digitalization, depending on the level of socio-economic activity: personal, organizational, routine.

Purwatiningsih Lisdiono, Jamaliah Said, Haslinda Yusoff et al.

In the era of high uncertainties, all businesses, including state-owned enterprises, are trying to be resilient, be able to absorb the negative impacts caused by the changes, adjust, rebound, and then thrive and success after the disruptions. This study aims to examine to what extent risk management and alliance management capabilities promote enterprise resilience among Indonesian state-owned enterprises using dynamic capability theory. Analysis was done using SPSS and Structural Equation Model – Partially Least Squares on 322 valid questionnaires that were received via an online survey from the boards of directors and senior management of state-owned enterprises and their subsidiaries. The study discovered that alliance management capabilities have a significant positive effect on enterprise resilience and risk management practice. Furthermore, the findings show that risk management contributes significantly to the formation of enterprise resilience and act as a mediator between alliance management capabilities and enterprise resilience. Thus, enterprise resilience can be developed by having the ability to form and manage alliances effectively and efficiently, as well as practicing risk management, which allows a firm to anticipate and plan mitigation actions in the face of an uncertain and disruptive situation.
