High-Density Multi-Depth Human Recordings Using 45 mm Long Neuropixels Probes

Daril E. Brown, Elizaveta Okorokova, Carrina Iacobacci et al.

Neuropixels probes, initially developed for use in small animal models, have transformed basic neuroscience by enabling high-density, single-cell resolution recordings across multiple brain regions simultaneously. The recent development of Neuropixels 1.0 NHP Long, a longer probe designed for non-human primates, has expanded this capability, enabling unprecedented simultaneous access to multiple cortical layers and deep brain structures of large-brained animals. Here, we report the first use of these probes in humans, aiming to establish safe intraoperative use and assess feasibility for clinical and research applications. Nine patients undergoing neurosurgical procedures, including epilepsy or tumor resection and deep brain stimulation (DBS) implantation, were enrolled. Successful intraoperative recordings were obtained from surface and deep cortical structures without probe breakage or adverse events. Compared with conventional electrodes, the Neuropixels probe enabled dense sampling across multiple parenchymal depths with submillisecond temporal resolution. Recordings were obtained from deep targets including the hippocampus and cingulate cortex, as well as from regions that are challenging to access with single-unit precision, such as the superior frontal sulcus. Custom tools and refined workflows lowered technical barriers for operative use and improved recording stability. Neural activity was observed across all recordings. Neuropixels 1.0-NHP Long probes can be deployed in the human operating room, enabling simultaneous recordings from multiple brain structures at single-neuron resolution. These methods expand opportunities for studying human brain function and pathology in vivo, and may ultimately support the development of more precise neurosurgical interventions.

Business models for the simulation hypothesis

Evangelos Katsamakas

The simulation hypothesis suggests that we live in a computer simulation. That notion has attracted significant scholarly and popular interest. This article explores the simulation hypothesis from a business perspective. Due to the lack of a name for a universe consistent with the simulation hypothesis, we propose the term simuverse. We argue that if we live in a simulation, there must be a business justification. Therefore, we ask: If we live in a simuverse, what is its business model? We identify and explore business model scenarios, such as simuverse as a project, service, or platform. We also explore business model pathways and risk management issues. The article contributes to the simulation hypothesis literature and is the first to provide a business model perspective on the simulation hypothesis. The article discusses theoretical and practical implications and identifies opportunities for future research related to sustainability, digital transformation, and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Вибір стратегії розвитку підприємства на стадії бізнес проєктування

Olena Kitchenko

A Blockchain Technique for Trade Credit Maintainability Using the Role of Information and Communication Technology

Faiza Shah, Yumin Liu, Yasir Shah et al.

Recent advances in data analysis and processing methods can improve the ability of computational applications to perform complex steps of different tasks. With the progress of information and communication technologies (ICT), Blockchain-based complex data processing for transaction analysis and smart contract agreement has become a new research area in the fields of mathematics and computation. Stability of financial sector based on the ICT is a core component for growing the economics of medium and small enterprises. This stability brings the innovation to businesses productivity, while the management of information takes more prospective for improving the efficiency and more ways for innovating the business of products. In this study, we use the autoregressive distribution lag (ARDL) model with Blockchain-based complex data processing approach to emphasize the role of ICT in the field of trade credit maintainability. Actually, the ICT connects the industries in the entire world and makes business sectors that use its technologies be more advanced. Based on the ARDL model conducted on the records gathered from 2000 to 2019, the analysis concludes that the ICT-based complex data processing is a critical component of trade credit. The statistics of ICT are chosen based on the economy penetrations through the Internet and mobile phones. The causality exposed between the trade credit and ICT is bidirectional in nature. Also, it is found that the usage of mobile phones has a substantial influence on the business sectors, as a substantial amount of trading and business transactions are conducted over the phone. Therefore, the primary concern is the association between the Blockchain and trade credit, which is thoroughly discussed in this work. The trade credit improves the stability of financial sector and the Blockchain supports its maintainability by the role of ICT. The results of the study can help the business stakeholders and investors to estimate the marketing for future useful execution.

an intelligent security centered resource-efficient resource management model for cloud computing environments

Deepika Saxena, Ashutosh Kumar Singh

This paper proposes a conceptual model for a secure and performance-efficient workload management model in cloud environments. In this model, a resource management unit is employed for energy and performance proficient allocation of virtual machines while ensuring the secure processing of users' applications by defending against data breaches due to unauthorized access to virtual machines in real-time. The resource management unit is guided by a secure virtual machine management unit which is designed to generate information regarding unauthorized access or inter-communication links among active virtual machines. Also, a workload analyzer unit operates concurrently to estimate resource utilization information to assist the resource management unit in the performance-efficient allocation of virtual machines. Contrary to prior works which engage access control mechanisms, encryption, and decryption of data before the transfer and the use of tunneling for prevention of unauthorized access to virtual machines which raises excess computational cost overhead, the proposed model operates diversely for efficiently serving the same purpose.

A Meta-Method for Portfolio Management Using Machine Learning for Adaptive Strategy Selection

Damian Kisiel, Denise Gorse

This work proposes a novel portfolio management technique, the Meta Portfolio Method (MPM), inspired by the successes of meta approaches in the field of bioinformatics and elsewhere. The MPM uses XGBoost to learn how to switch between two risk-based portfolio allocation strategies, the Hierarchical Risk Parity (HRP) and more classical Naïve Risk Parity (NRP). It is demonstrated that the MPM is able to successfully take advantage of the best characteristics of each strategy (the NRP's fast growth during market uptrends, and the HRP's protection against drawdowns during market turmoil). As a result, the MPM is shown to possess an excellent out-of-sample risk-reward profile, as measured by the Sharpe ratio, and in addition offers a high degree of interpretability of its asset allocation decisions.

Deploying Crowdsourcing for Workflow Driven Business Process

Rafał Masłyk, Kinga Skorupska, Piotr Gago et al.

The main goal of this paper is to discuss how to integrate the possibilities of crowdsourcing platforms with systems supporting workflow to enable the engagement and interaction with business tasks of a wider group of people. Thus, this work is an attempt to expand the functional capabilities of typical business systems by allowing selected process tasks to be performed by unlimited human resources. Opening business tasks to crowdsourcing, within established Business Process Management Systems (BPMS) will improve the flexibility of company processes and allow for lower work-load and greater specialization among the staff employed on-site. The presented conceptual work is based on the current international standards in this field, promoted by Workflows Management Coalition. To this end, the functioning of business platforms was analysed and their functionality was presented visually, followed by a proposal and a discussion of how to implement crowdsourcing into workflow systems.

Score-Based Explanations in Data Management and Machine Learning

Leopoldo Bertossi

We describe some approaches to explanations for observed outcomes in data management and machine learning. They are based on the assignment of numerical scores to predefined and potentially relevant inputs. More specifically, we consider explanations for query answers in databases, and for results from classification models. The described approaches are mostly of a causal and counterfactual nature. We argue for the need to bring domain and semantic knowledge into score computations; and suggest some ways to do this.

Measuring and Managing Carbon Risk in Investment Portfolios

Théo Roncalli, Théo Le Guenedal, Frédéric Lepetit et al.

This article studies the impact of carbon risk on stock pricing. To address this, we consider the seminal approach of Görgen \textsl{et al.} (2019), who proposed estimating the carbon financial risk of equities by their carbon beta. To achieve this, the primary task is to develop a brown-minus-green (or BMG) risk factor, similar to Fama and French (1992). Secondly, we must estimate the carbon beta using a multi-factor model. While Görgen \textsl{et al.} (2019) considered that the carbon beta is constant, we propose a time-varying estimation model to assess the dynamics of the carbon risk. Moreover, we test several specifications of the BMG factor to understand which climate change-related dimensions are priced in by the stock market. In the second part of the article, we focus on the carbon risk management of investment portfolios. First, we analyze how carbon risk impacts the construction of a minimum variance portfolio. As the goal of this portfolio is to reduce unrewarded financial risks of an investment, incorporating the carbon risk into this approach fulfils this objective. Second, we propose a new framework for building enhanced index portfolios with a lower exposure to carbon risk than capitalization-weighted stock indices. Finally, we explore how carbon sensitivities can improve the robustness of factor investing portfolios.

On the application of transfer learning in prognostics and health management

Ramin Moradi, Katrina M. Groth

Advancements in sensing and computing technologies, the development of human and computer interaction frameworks, big data storage capabilities, and the emergence of cloud storage and could computing have resulted in an abundance of data in the modern industry. This data availability has encouraged researchers and industry practitioners to rely on data-based machine learning, especially deep learning, models for fault diagnostics and prognostics more than ever. These models provide unique advantages, however, their performance is heavily dependent on the training data and how well that data represents the test data. This issue mandates fine-tuning and even training the models from scratch when there is a slight change in operating conditions or equipment. Transfer learning is an approach that can remedy this issue by keeping portions of what is learned from previous training and transferring them to the new application. In this paper, a unified definition for transfer learning and its different types is provided, Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) studies that have used transfer learning are reviewed in detail, and finally, a discussion on transfer learning application considerations and gaps is provided for improving the applicability of transfer learning in PHM.

Joint Resource and Admission Management for Slice-enabled Networks

Sina Ebrahimi, Abulfazl Zakeri, Behzad Akbari et al.

Network slicing is a crucial part of the 5G networks that communication service providers (CSPs) seek to deploy. By exploiting three main enabling technologies, namely, software-defined networking (SDN), network function virtualization (NFV), and network slicing, communication services can be served to the end-users in an efficient, scalable, and flexible manner. To adopt these technologies, what is highly important is how to allocate the resources and admit the customers of the CSPs based on the predefined criteria and available resources. In this regard, we propose a novel joint resource and admission management algorithm for slice-enabled networks. In the proposed algorithm, our target is to minimize the network cost of the CSP subject to the slice requests received from the tenants corresponding to the virtual machines and virtual links constraints. Our performance evaluation of the proposed method shows its efficiency in managing CSP's resources.

Stochastic model of business process decomposition

Grigory Tsiperman

Decomposition is the basis of works dedicated to business process modelling at the stage of information and management systems analysis and design. The article shows that the business process decomposition can be represented as a Galton Watson branching stochastic process. This representation allows estimating the decomposition tree depth and the total amount of its elements, as well as explaining the empirical requirement for the business function decomposition (not more than 7 elements). The problem is deemed relevant as the obtained results allow objectively estimating the labor input in business process modelling.
