Lessons from a Pioneering Software Engineering Environment: Design Principles of Software through Pictures

Anthony I., Wasserman

This paper describes the historical background that led to the development of the innovative Software through Pictures multi-user development environment, and the principles for its integration with other software products to create a software engineering environment covering multiple tasks in the software development lifecycle.

Do the Defect Prediction Models Really Work?

Umamaheswara Sharma B, Ravichandra Sadam

You may develop a potential prediction model, but how can I trust your model that it will benefit my software?. Using a software defect prediction (SDP) model as a tool, we address this fundamental problem in machine learning research. This is a preliminary work targeted at providing an analysis of the developed binary SDP model in real-time working environments.

Technical Report: Unresolved Challenges and Potential Features in EATXT

Weixing Zhang, Jörg Holtmann

We developed a textual concrete syntax and a textual editor that supports it for the domain-specific language EAST-ADL, which we named EATXT. This document is a technical report that describes potential advanced features that could be added to EATXT that have not yet been implemented. The purpose of this report is to share our understanding of the relevant technical challenges and to assist potentially interested peers.

Are Software Updates Useless Against Advanced Persistent Threats?

Fabio Massacci, Giorgio Di Tizio

A dilemma worth Shakespeare's Hamlet is increasingly haunting companies and security researchers: ``to update or not to update, this is the question``. From the perspective of recommended common practices by software vendors the answer is unambiguous: you should keep your software up-to-date. But is common sense always good sense? We argue it is not.

Release as a Contract: A Concept of Meta-Maintenance for the Entire FLOSS Ecosystem

Hideaki Hata

We advocate for a paradigm shift in supporting free/libre and open source software (FLOSS) ecosystem maintenance, from focusing on individual projects to monitoring a whole organic system of the entire FLOSS ecosystem, which we call software meta-maintenance. We discuss challenges of building a global source code management system, a global issue management system, and FLOSS human capital index, based on the blockchain technologies.

Aspects of Sustainable Test Processes

Armin Beer, Michael Felderer, Tobias Lorey et al.

Testing is a core software development activity that has huge potential to make software development more sustainable. In this paper, we discuss how environmental, social, economic, and technical sustainability map onto the activities of test planning, design, execution, and evaluation.

Characteristics of Spreadsheets Developed with the SSMI Methodology

Paul Mireault

The SSMI methodology was developed using concepts from Computer Science, Software Engineering and Information Systems and has been taught to undergraduate and MBA students and in Executive training seminars. In this paper, we describe the major characteristics of the spreadsheets developed using the methodology and show how they contribute to reduce many error causing factors.

Why a Testing Career Is Not the First Choice of Engineers

Pradeep Kashinath Waychal, Luiz Fernando Capretz

As software systems are becoming larger, more complex, and dependent on many third-party software components, the chances of their failure are increasing further. This calls for intense efforts to improve the quality of testing in the software development process.

Towards a Pattern-based Automatic Generation of Logical Specifications for Software Models

Radoslaw Klimek

The work relates to the automatic generation of logical specifications, considered as sets of temporal logic formulas, extracted directly from developed software models. The extraction process is based on the assumption that the whole developed model is structured using only predefined workflow patterns. A method of automatic transformation of workflow patterns to logical specifications is proposed. Applying the presented concepts enables bridging the gap between the benefits of deductive reasoning for the correctness verification process and the difficulties in obtaining complete logical specifications for this process.

PLOS/Mozilla Scientific Code Review Pilot: Summary of Findings

Marian Petre, Greg Wilson

PLOS and Mozilla conducted a month-long pilot study in which professional developers performed code reviews on software associated with papers published in PLOS Computational Biology. While the developers felt the reviews were limited by (a) lack of familiarity with the domain and (b) lack of two-way contact with authors, the scientists appreciated the reviews, and both sides were enthusiastic about repeating the experiment.

Decision Taking as a Service

Jan A. Bergstra

Decision taking can be performed as a service to other parties and it is amenable to outtasking rather than to outsourcing. Outtasking decision taking is compatible with selfsourcing of decision making activities carried out in preparation of decision taking. Decision taking as a service (DTaaS) is viewed as an instance of so-called decision casting. Preconditions for service casting are examined, and compliance of decision taking with these preconditions is confirmed. Potential advantages and disadvantages of using decision taking as a service are considered.

A New Proposed Technique to Improve Software Regression Testing Cost

Seifedine Kadry

In this article, we describe the regression test process to test and verify the changes made on software. A developed technique use the automation test based on decision tree and test selection process in order to reduce the testing cost is given. The developed technique is applied to a practical case and the result show its improvement.
