Ultrafast non-equilibrium magnon generation and collapse of spin-orbit hybridization gaps in iron

Xinwei Zheng, Shabnam Haque, Christian Strüber et al.

We distinguish between longitudinal and transverse spin excitations in the ultrafast response of iron by probing exchange splitting ΔEex and magnetic linear dichroism (MLD) in time- and angleresolved photoemission. Comparing spin-split partner bands at the Fermi level shows that ΔEex remains constant upon optical excitation. In contrast, the different MLD response of spin-orbitsplit valence bands reveals non-equilibrium, transverse spin dynamics. Magnon generation in Fe is ultrafast, electronic band specific, and drives the collapse of spin-orbit hybridization gaps.

Revisiting the Lindemann's criterion from a minimal viscosity perspective

Pablo G. Tello, Sauro Succi

A revisiting of the Lindemann criterion under the recently established minimal viscosity formulation is proposed which uncovers intriguing insights into the melting process. The approach suggests that melting involves competition between the electron rest energy and the thermal one caused by temperature increase when considering a defect-free crystal structure. However, when accounting for the role of vacancies in the melting process, the analysis suggests that the key competing factors are the thermal energy and the one needed for vacancy migration. The estimated value of the Lindemann constant, in this case, is close to the reported values and with recent simulations studying the correlation between Born and Lindemann melting criteria.

Periodization and Block Periodization in Sports: Emphasis on Strength-Power Training-A Provocative and Challenging Narrative.

M. Stone, W. Hornsby, G. G. Haff et al.

ABSTRACT Stone, MH, Hornsby, WG, Haff, GG, Fry, AC, Suarez, DG, Liu, J, Gonzalez-Rave, JM, and Pierce, KC. Periodization and block periodization in sports: emphasis on strength-power training-a provocative and challenging narrative. J Strength Cond Res XX(X): 000-000, 2021-Periodization can be defined as a logical sequential, phasic method of manipulating fitness and recovery phases to increase the potential for achieving specific performance goals while minimizing the potential for nonfunctional over-reaching, overtraining, and injury. Periodization deals with the micromanagement of timelines and fitness phases and is cyclic in nature. On the other hand, programming deals with the micromanagement of the training process and deals with exercise selection, volume, intensity, etc. Evidence indicates that a periodized training process coupled with appropriate programming can produce superior athletic enhancement compared with nonperiodized process. There are 2 models of periodization, traditional and block. Traditional can take different forms (i.e., reverse). Block periodization has 2 subtypes, single goal or factor (individual sports) and multiple goals or factors (team sports). Both models have strengths and weaknesses but can be "tailored" through creative programming to produce excellent results for specific sports.

Effects of High-Intensity Interval Training on Olympic Combat Sports Athletes' Performance and Physiological Adaptation: A Systematic Review

E. Franchini, Stuart J. Cormack, M. Takito

Abstract Franchini, E, Cormack, S, and Takito, MY. Effects of high-intensity interval training on Olympic combat sports athletes' performance and physiological adaptation: A systematic review. J Strength Cond Res 33(1): 242–252, 2019—Combat sports represent around 25% of all Olympic medals disputed, and the success in these sports are determined by technical-tactical excellence and supported by physiological and psychological development. Although the training in combat sports is intermittent training by nature, some researchers have started to focus their attention on the effects of complementary high-intensity interval training (HIIT)-coupled standard combat sports-specific training on morphological, physiological, and performance adaptations. Thus, in this systematic review, we aimed to verify the effects of this type of training on these variables. A total of 117 articles in the electronic databases Pubmed, Scopus, and Web of Science were retrieved, and 9 studies remained in the present systematic review. A total of 228 athletes (138 judo athletes, 40 taekwondo athletes, 18 boxers, 17 karate athletes, and 15 wrestlers) were investigated in these 9 studies (5 with judo athletes, 1 with boxers, 1 with karate athletes, 1 with wrestlers, and 1 with taekwondo athletes). The HIIT protocols investigated did not generate any change in body fat percentage or body mass but generally resulted in increases in max or peak, varying from 4.4 to 23.0%. However, the most observed benefit of HIIT protocols was an increase in anaerobic fitness, represented by improvements in anaerobic power and capacity.

Bound state of a He-3 atom at the interface of crystal and superfluid He-4

Massimo Boninsegni

The bound state of a He-3 atom at the interface between coexisting crystalline and superfluid phases of He-4 is studied theoretically by means of first principle Quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We consider both the case of a solid/superfluid He-4 interface, as well as that of a few solid layers of He-4 forming on an attractive substrate. It is observed that the He-3 bound state is sharply localized in a well-defined, quasi-2D layer of He-4 in the region intermediate between the solid and the liquid. The layer in which the He-3 atom resides displays an intriguing interplay of atomic localization and quantum-mechanical exchanges; is not necessarily the first "non-solid" layer, as suggested in previous studies, and it is affected by the attractive strength of the substrate.
