Modern Moral Philosophy

G. Anscombe

I will begin by stating three theses which I present in this paper. The first is that it is not profitable for us at present to do moral philosophy; that should be laid aside at any rate until we have an adequate philosophy of psychology, in which we are conspicuously lacking. The second is that the concepts of obligation, and duty—moral obligation and moral duty, that is to say—and of what is morally right and wrong, and of the moral sense of “ought,” ought to be jettisoned if this is psychologically possible; because they are survivals, or derivatives from survivals, from an earlier conception of ethics which no longer generally survives, and are only harmful without it. My third thesis is that the differences between the wellknown English writers on moral philosophy from Sidgwick to the present day are of little importance.

“En el principio fue la acción”

Jaime Ramos Arenas

The algorithmic muse and the public domain: Why copyrights legal philosophy precludes protection for generative AI outputs

Ezieddin Elmahjub

Generative AI (GenAI) outputs are not copyrightable. This article argues why. We bypass conventional doctrinal analysis that focuses on black letter law notions of originality and authorship to re-evaluate copyright's foundational philosophy. GenAI fundamentally severs the direct human creative link to expressive form. Traditional theories utilitarian incentive, labor desert and personality fail to provide coherent justification for protection. The public domain constitutes the default baseline for intellectual creations. Those seeking copyright coverage for GenAI outputs bear the burden of proof. Granting copyright to raw GenAI outputs would not only be philosophically unsound but would also trigger an unprecedented enclosure of the digital commons, creating a legal quagmire and stifling future innovation. The paper advocates for a clear distinction: human creative contributions to AI-generated works may warrant protection, but the raw algorithmic output should remain in the public domain.

On an Unnoticed Geometrical Paradox in Plato's Timaeus' Cosmology

Salomon Ofman, Luc Brisson

In a previous article, we discussed a paradox in Timaeus' cosmology: that there is no void inside the universe, even though it is entirely filled with polyhedra-a mathematical impossibility (Brisson-Ofman 2025). In the present article, we examine another paradox. While the first paradox is well known and was already highlighted by Aristotle as a fundamental mathematical contradiction undermining Plato's cosmology, this new paradox has gone almost entirely unnoticed by commentators, both ancient and modern. This oversight may surprise scholars, given the extensive body of work on Timaeus' universe, much of which emphasizes discrepancies with astronomical observations or points out supposed internal contradictions. Like the first paradox, this one arises from the premise of a universe entirely filled with polyhedra. However, in this case, the contradiction stems from the absence of void outside it. In the first section, we demonstrate that the shape of the universe cannot be a perfect mathematical sphere: that is, its boundary is not smooth but exhibits bumps and hollows. Next, we present conceptual arguments from Plato's text that support the necessity of such 'defects' in the universe's shape compared to a perfect mathematical sphere. In the third section, we argue that such a universe cannot move at all. Finally, we propose a solution to this mathematical contradiction in Timaeus' construction, drawing on the same ideas used to address the earlier apparent contradiction: the unique feature of Timaeus' universe as a living being, whose parts are continuously moving, changing, decomposing, and reforming. While this problem does not depend on the various schools of interpretation of the Timaeus, it is related to some important issues concerning Plato's philosophy. These issues include the importance of observations in science-particularly in astronomy-the relationship between intelligible models and their sensible copies, the mythos/ logos approach of Plato's cosmology, and the debate over 'metaphorical' vs 'literal' interpretation. Of course, all these questions fall outside the scope of this article and will not be addressed here.

The Application of Virtual Environments and Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education: Experimental Findings in Philosophy Teaching

Adel Vehrer, Zsolt Palfalusi

This study explores how virtual environments and artificial intelligence can enhance university students' learning experiences, with particular attention to the digital preferences of Generation Z. An experiment was conducted at the Faculty of Pedagogy, Humanities, and Social Sciences at University of Gyor, where Walter's Cube technology and a trained AI mediator were integrated into the instruction of ten philosophical topics. The curriculum was aligned with the official syllabus and enriched with visual content, quotations, and explanatory texts related to iconic figures in philosophy. A total of 77 first-year undergraduate students from full-time humanities and social sciences programs participated in the study. Following their end-of-semester offline written examination, students voluntarily completed a paper-based, anonymous ten-question test and provided feedback on the method's effectiveness. No sensitive personal data were collected, and the research was conducted with formal approval from the Faculty Dean. Descriptive statistics and inferential tests were applied to evaluate the impact of the virtual environment and AI mediation on learning outcomes. Results indicate that 80 percent of participants achieved good or excellent final exam grades, and the majority rated the virtual material as highly effective. Qualitative feedback emphasized increased motivation and deeper engagement, attributed to the immersive 3D presentation and interactive AI support. This research contributes to the advancement of digital pedagogy and suggests new directions for applying virtual and AI-based methods in higher education, particularly in disciplines where abstract reasoning and conceptual understanding are central.

The Effect of Capital Intensity, Audit Quality, Thin Capitalization, and Gender Diversity on Tax Aggressiveness

Yoga Adi Pratama, Muhammad Abdul Aris

This study aims to analyze the effects of capital intensity, audit quality, thin capitalization, and gender diversity on tax aggressiveness in state-owned enterprises (SOEs) listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) from 2020 to 2023. This research adopts a quantitative approach with an associative method, and the sample is selected using purposive sampling based on criteria such as SOEs listed on IDX, financial reports expressed in Indonesian Rupiah, and excluding the banking sector. The dependent variable is tax aggressiveness, measured using the Effective Tax Rate (ETR), while the independent variables are capital intensity, audit quality, thin capitalization, and gender diversity. Data analysis is performed using multiple linear regression and classical assumption tests to ensure the validity of the regression model. The findings indicate that capital intensity, audit quality, thin capitalization, and gender diversity significantly affect tax aggressiveness. This research has limitations, such as the restriction to SOEs and a three-year observation period. Future research is suggested to expand the scope by using the IDX-IC classification and extending the study period, as well as considering additional variables such as firm size and ownership structure.

How Does Parental Early Maladaptive Schema Affect Adolescents’ Social Adaptation? Based on the Perspective of Intergenerational Transmission

Ying Shi, I-Jun Chen, Mengping Yang et al.

An individual’s social adaptation is affected by their early maladaptive schemas. Previous studies have shown that early maladaptive schemas may be intergenerationally transmitted in families. It is important to explore the intergenerational effect of early maladaptive schemas on adolescents’ social adaptation, as they are in a critical period of growth and development. In this study, a cross-sectional design and questionnaire survey were used to collect data to explore the intergenerational influence of early maladaptive schemas in families and their relationship with adolescents’ social adaptation. The participants were 201 adolescents aged 12 to 16 years and their primary caregivers (father or mother), of whom 125 (62.2%) were boys and 76 (37.8%) were girls. There were 70 fathers (34.8%) and 131 mothers (65.2%). Chinese adolescents and their primary caregivers were surveyed using paired questionnaires, and the Young Schema Questionnaire (short form) and Adolescent Social Adaptation Scale were completed. The results show that adolescents’ early maladaptive schema plays an intermediary role between parents’ early maladaptive schema and adolescents’ social adaptation. Parental mistrust/abuse and insufficient self-control schemas affected adolescents’ social adaptation through the mediating effect of their corresponding schemas. Our results reveal the negative impact path of parents’ early maladaptive schemas on adolescents’ social adaptation and provide a new direction for the clinical practice of adolescent family therapy.

Mastering Digital Media Literacy of Muslim Woman's Activists in Preventing Online Gender-Based Violence

Prima Ayu Rizqy Mahanani, Fatma Dian Pratiwi, Fartika Ifriqia et al.

This article tends to analyze how Muslim women's activists, who are the members of Nasyiatul Aisyiyah and Fatayat NU in Kediri and Yogyakarta, build their digital literacy to prevent violence in social media. Mainly due to the digital divide between men and women, which causes imbalance and injustice when they access digital media. The method used in data collection was semi-ethnographic, in which the researcher participated in observing research objects when carrying out activities using digital technology, interviews, and documentation on 3 members of Nasyiatul Aisyiyah and Fatayat NU, both in Jogja and Kediri. The research findings show that what has been stigmatized to women so far is that they are powerless to master information and communication technology, which does not apply to members of Fatayat NU and Nasyiatul Aisyiyah. This research shows that women are also reliable in accessing the internet for the benefit of empowering women, especially KBGO issues. This research has provided a different understanding of the phenomenon of the massive use of internet-based technology by female activists
