Politički manevri dijadoha Leonata

Patrik Smolak

Aleksandrova iznenadna smrt u Babilonu 323. g. pr. Kr.

Ovidian intertextuality and metamorphosis in Prudentius

Philip Hardie

Richard Bentley famously called Prudentius ‘Christianorum Maro et Flaccus’. Recent work has explored the extent and detail of Prudentius’ Virgilian intertextuality, most notably in the allegorical epic the Psychomachia, but also in many others of his works. Horatian lyric is laid under contribution not just in the lyric metres of the hymns in the Cathemerinon. The personal Praefatio and Epilogus allude mostly to Horace, and hardly at all to Virgil (not surprising, given Horace’s use of first-person genres in autobiographical mode). In this paper I focus on allusion to a poet arguably almost as important for Prudentius as Virgil and Horace, Ovid. In particular, I look at Prudentius’ allusion to the themes and language of Ovidian metamorphosis.

Titulus Crucis

Joseph Geiger

According to the Gospel of John, and also some MSS of Luke, the titulus crucis was written in three languages: Έβραιστί (probably meaning Aramaic), Ῥωμαιστἰ, Έλληνιστἰ.. Only John ascribes the inscription to Pilate. With one notable exception (whose irrelevance is explained) the author is not aware of any inscription set up — or, indeed, any sort of document being composed — by a Roman in an official capacity in any language other than Latin and Greek. However, one should bear in mind the wide discretionary powers of Roman governors. Pilate might have used the local vernacular, if he so wished, without consulting models. One detail in John’s narrative seems to suggest that exactly this might have been the case. John alone refers to the inscription by the Latin loan-word titlos, the very word applied to the placard carried before the criminal. This seems to be the first occurrence of the term in both Greek literature and epigraphy; occurrences in later literature are almost exclusively Christian texts, often using the term in the context of the titulus crucis. We cannot separate John’s statements as to the nature of the inscription from his referring to it as a titlos: the two come together from the same source. The employment of the (in Greek) unprecedented Roman term for the inscription lends it credibility: Pilate could have ignored (or have been ignorant of) the lack of precedent and used Aramaic, perhaps for the very reason stated by John. If this conclusion is correct, it further strengthens the claims for the historicity of John’s account of the trial and death of Jesus as against the Synoptic tradition.

Indigenous Languages of Scotland: Poverty Culture and the Classroom

D. Matheson, C. Matheson-Monnet

Scotland ’ s indigenous languages were, for very many years, under attack. The Gaelic of the Highlands and Western Isles, arguably one of the earliest written European languages, after Greek and Latin, brie fl y fl ourished around 1000CE as the language of the Scottish Royal Court. Scots, spoken by the mass of the people, was the language of the Makars, renowned medieval poets. Gaelic was effectively ignored but for attempts by the Scottish Society for the Propagation of Christian of all recognition in the space of remarkably few years. Gaelic-medium schools continue to expand, even in the face, sometimes, of dif fi culties in recruiting teachers suf fi ciently fl uent to be able to teach in the language. Scottish literature, including literature actually written in Scots, features prominently in school examination syllabuses.

Nabataean

D. Graf

Located on the eastern periphery of the Roman Empire, the Nabataean client-kingdom played an important role in regional politics and international trade, but it is primarily known from Greek and Latin writers, of whom Josephus is of primary importance. What can be postulated about any native literature has to be culled from a variety of sources, including treatises on Arabika that survive only in fragments, a rather large corpus of Nabataean Aramaic inscriptions, and papyri. They provide glimpses at least of possible ethnographical, mythological, legal, and religious works. In particular, inscriptions and papyri refer to archives, and are saturated with Arabic loanwords implying this was the private or native Nabataean language. Nabataean religious festivals and activities were organized around a lunar calendar, preserved in a few zodiac representations, with well-regulated pilgrimages and related activities, suggesting records and texts were preserved in temple archives.

Phraseological Units and Their Transformations

Galina Rabosh

The peculiarity of French phraseologisms is that they are frequently used in the language of scientific, business and journalistic style. These are expressions from ancient literature, Greek and Latin phraseologies without translation. The construction of phrases assumes certain types and means of syntax, semantics and grammatical features of components, lexical and stylistic differentiation of components. The main role in the formation of the utterance is given to the verb, since it expresses the mode of action (punitive, conditional ...), its completeness or incompleteness, conditionality or unconditionality. In addition to grammatical meanings, the verb assumes its own semantics i.e. compatibility of the verb with nouns, adverbs or prepositions. An important role is played by the phenomenon of the propagation of the value of components or components of phraseology, when additional components enhance or actualize the fundamental value of phraseology and add more expressiveness to the given phraseological unit. Particular attention is given to phrases in which the internal form is conditioned by the use of prepositions, conjunctions, which serve to convey various circumstantial meanings. That is, additional components actualize the fundamental importance of phraseologism. Key words: phraseologies; literal meaning; idioms; images.

Hic et nunc: Amy Richlin's Iran Man and the ethics of translating Plautus

C. Daniel

Willing to challenge the classical tradition, Richlin (2005) adapted the Latin play Persa by Plautus to a contemporary context using American slang and pop culture. Richlin aims at making Roman comedy performable, popular and funny again whether onstage or in the classroom. Is her radical modernisation a form of domestication that is often criticized in translation studies for being unfaithful and unethical? Based upon a comparison between the original Latin text and Richlin’s version, this paper questions the ethics of faithfulness which play a major role in translation terminology, a system determined by the traditional polarity between domestication and foreignization. By highlighting the ludic nature of Plautus’ comedy (especially the ongoing joke with Greek culture and language), this paper argues that using modern transposition is a heavily Plautine strategy suitable for recovering the immediacy of comedy. a performance ( ludicrum ) of Clara She is working on a thesis in Comparative Literature on the subjects of translating classical texts today and using translation as a tool for teaching Classics. Based on an interdisciplinary approach between classical phi-lology and reception studies, she works on translating Roman comedy for a mainstream audience with the example of her own French adaptation of Miles gloriosus by Plautus. She is also interested in the reception of the Antiquity in pop culture. She currently teaches Latin courses at the Classics Department of Aix-Marseille University.

English and European Languages are Arabic Dialects on the Loose: The Evidence: "The Emperor Marries Mary Merrily on a Mare by the Mere": A Consonantal Radical Theory Approach

Zaidan Ali Jassem

Thus far, 58 papers have firmly established the close genetic relationship between Arabic and the socalled Indo-European languages, covering all aspects of language analysis phonetically, morphologically, grammatically, and lexically or semantically (Jassem 2012-2018). In all those papers, words have been classified into (a) broad semantic fields or areas such as family terms, animal terms, colour terms, religious/divine terms or (b) grammatical functions and categories like pronouns, question words, verb to be, and the like. The purpose of all these papers is to reject traditional thinking and practice as well as long-held views in the field which classifies Arabic and IndoEuropean languages like English, German, French, Latin, Greek, and so on as members of different families (Bergs and Brinton 2012; Algeo 2010; Crystal 2010: 302; Campbell 2013; Yule 2006; Crowley 1997: 22-25, 110-111; Pyles and Algeo 1993: 61-94).

Od prevoza do politike

Bernarda Županek, Alenka Miškec

Novembra 2015 so pri arheoloških raziskavah ob prenovi Slovenske ceste na prostoru emonske insule XIII med drugim odkrili železen prstan z vdelano gemo. Na njej je upodobljena bojna galeja. Razločno so vidna vesla, krma, kljun in oven (rostrum). Na ladji oziroma nad njo sta upodobljena signa militaria, vojaška znaka centurij. Prstan glede na obliko datiramo v 1. stoletje, gemo pa glede na stil izvedbe postavljamo v 1.–2. stoletje. Gema je bila izdelana v različici kalcedona, imenovanega nikolo. Prstani z gemami so služili za pečatenje različnih dokumentov, motivi na njih pa so odražali okus in identiteto lastnika. Geme z upodobitvami ladje so redke.

Linguistic Naturalism and Natural Style

De Jonge

TheGreek rhetorician and historianDionysius ofHalicarnassus was active in Rome at the end of the first century BC.His extant works include a history of early Rome, critical letters, and rhetorical treatises with a focus on style:On Composition, On Imitation, On Thucydides, and On the Ancient Orators, including separate essays on Lysias, Isocrates, Isaeus, and Demosthenes. Engaged as he was in the oratory, history, and poetry of the classical Greek past, Dionysius himself lived in the Golden Age of Latin Literature. Born before BC, he was a contemporary of Virgil andHorace.WhenDionysius arrived in Rome in  BC, Marcus Tullius Cicero (– BC) had been dead for more than a decade, but Marcus Terentius Varro (– BC) was still alive. Dionysius used Varro’s Antiquities as one of the principal sources for his own Roman Antiquities, as he indicates in several references. He admired Varro as ‘the most learned man of his age’ (Ant. Rom. .. ἀνὴρ τῶν κατὰ τὴν αὐτὴν ἡλικίαν ἀκμασάντων πολυπειρότατος). The concept of ‘natural style’ is very prominent in Dionysius’ rhetorical works. He frequently praises the orator Lysias for his natural diction and
