The AfD: Finally a Successful Right-Wing Populist Eurosceptic Party for Germany?

Kai Arzheimer

Within less than two years of being founded by disgruntled members of the governing CDU, the newly formed Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has already performed extraordinarily well in the 2013 general election, the 2014 EP election, and a string of state elections. Highly unusually by German standards, it campaigned for an end to all efforts to save the euro and argued for a reconfiguration of Germany’s foreign policy. This seems to chime with the recent surge in far-right voting in Western Europe, and the AfD was subsequently described as right-wing populist and Europhobe.

How the Alternative for Germany (AfD) and their voters veered to the radical right, 2013–2017

Kai Arzheimer, Carl C. Berning

Abstract Until 2017, Germany was an exception to the success of radical right parties in postwar Europe. We provide new evidence for the transformation of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) to a radical right party drawing upon social media data. Further, we demonstrate that the AfD's electorate now matches the radical right template of other countries and that its trajectory mirrors the ideological shift of the party. Using data from the 2013 to 2017 series of German Longitudinal Elections Study (GLES) tracking polls, we employ multilevel modelling to test our argument on support for the AfD. We find the AfD's support now resembles the image of European radical right voters. Specifically, general right-wing views and negative attitudes towards immigration have become the main motivation to vote for the AfD. This, together with the increased salience of immigration and the AfD's new ideological profile, explains the party's rise.

Associations Between Serum 25(OH)D Concentrations and Clinical Characteristics in Pediatric Patients

Maria Nicolae, Sorin Deacu, Cristina Maria Mihai et al.

Background/Objectives: Vitamin D has an essential role in immune modulation and inflammatory control, particularly in respiratory infections. Despite widespread supplementation policies, hypovitaminosis D remains common in children and data linking vitamin D status to hospitalization outcomes in pediatric upper respiratory tract infections are limited, especially in Eastern Europe. Methods: We included 400 pediatric patients hospitalized between October 2020 and December 2024 for acute respiratory tract infections (ARTI), and we stratified them into a Normal Vitamin D group (NVD) with sufficient serum 25(OH)D concentrations and a Low Vitamin D group (LVD) with insufficient or deficient levels. Between-group comparisons for continuous variables were performed using non-parametric methods. Results: Children with insufficient or deficient 25(OH)D had a significantly longer duration of hospitalization compared with those with sufficient levels (mean 4.68 ± 2.59 days vs. 2.89 ± 1.81 days). The LVD group showed markedly lower serum vitamin D concentrations (mean 21.63 ± 5.56 ng/mL; median 22.29 ng/mL) compared with the NVD group (mean 47.60 ± 19.59 ng/mL; median 43.70 ng/mL). Markers of disease severity were consistently higher in vitamin D-deficient patients, including higher clinical scores (mean 3.77 ± 2.29 vs. 1.62 ± 1.89), elevated CRP levels (mean 3.50 ± 3.02 mg/L vs. 1.64 ± 1.59 mg/L), and increased O2 therapy requirement (69.5% vs. 21.0%). Fever was more frequent in the LVD group (61.0% vs. 32.0%). An inverse correlation was observed between serum 25(OH)D concentrations and hospitalization duration, clinical score, and disease severity, with deficiency present across all age strata in the LVD group, while no cases of deficiency were observed in the NVD group. Conclusions: Low serum 25(OH)D concentrations are associated with increased disease severity and prolonged hospitalization.

Družba sestara milosrdnica sv. Vinka Paulskog – povijesno naslijeđe sestrinstva u Karlovcu

Vinka Paulskog i priučeno osoblje. Svrha je ovoga rada istražiti doprinos i djelokrug rada Družbe sestara milosrdnica sv. Vinka Paulskog u Gradskoj javnoj bolnici u Karlovcu u razdoblju od 1. travnja 1888. do 12. listopada 1978. godine.

Sogni e visioni nella Vita nova

Donato Pirovano

Stratigrafsko najstarejši zgodnjesrednjeveški grobovi in začetek pokopavanja na grobišču Župna cerkev v Kranju

Jernej Rihter

Solar spectra datasets at optimum and vertical installation angles in central Europe (Berlin) during 2020, 2021 and 2022

Guillermo A. Farias-Basulto, Maximilian Riedel, Mark Khenkin et al.

This article provides datasets containing three years worth of solar spectra for the optimum installation angle of 35° and the building-integrated-photovoltaics relevant vertical angle of 90°. These datasets were obtained by measuring the spectrally resolved solar spectra using a five minute interval, where two sets of spectrometers, which measure different ranges of the solar spectrum, were employed. In addition, a merged dataset of these two spectral measurements, related to every specific five minute interval measurement, is provided. An analysis and interpretation of the data using only year the 2020 is provided in “Measurement and analysis of annual solar spectra at different installation angles in central Europe” [1].

What radiologists need to know about patients’ expectations: P.A.T.I.E.N.T.S C.A.R.E.R.S A.I.M.S

European Society of Radiology (ESR)

Abstract The Patient Advisory Group (PAG) of the European Society of Radiology aims to highlight, in this short paper, patients’ expectations from the radiological community and support workers, throughout the patient’s medical imaging journey for completion of diagnostic or interventional examinations. In order to maintain constant awareness of patients’ expectations, key expectations have been summarised in an easy-to-remember mnemonic: PATIENTS CARERS AIMS. Due to disparate healthcare systems and medical imaging services in Europe, not all patient expectations can be systematically met, but healthcare providers should be mindful, when setting up new operational procedures, of the need to focus on patient-centred needs and care. At times when new or improved technology is being introduced, such as artificial intelligence applications, telemedicine, robotisation of interventional procedures and digitised records, the impact on radiologist–patient communication and interactions should be considered.

Pesticides Contamination of Cereals and Legumes: Monitoring of Samples Marketed in Italy as a Contribution to Risk Assessment

Valeria Nardelli, Valeria D’Amico, Mariateresa Ingegno et al.

The evaluation of cereal-based product contamination by pesticide residues is a topic of worldwide importance, and reliable analytical methods for official check analyses and monitoring studies are required for multi-residue analysis at trace levels. In this work, a validated multi-residual analytical method by gas-chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry coupled with a rapid QuEChERS procedure was used for the determination of 37 pesticides (pyrethroids, organophosphorus and organochlorine compounds) in 209 commercially available samples of cereals and 11 legumes, placed on the Italian market in 2018 and 2019, coming from different regions of Italy, eastern Europe, and some non-European countries. No pesticide traces were observed in the analyzed legume samples. A total of 18 cereal samples were found to be contaminated by at least one pesticide, with a concentration level higher than the corresponding quantification limit, but never exceeding the maximum level fixed in the European Regulations. This work is the first part of a surveillance study for pesticide control in food samples.
