Research on the Cultural Landscape Features and Regional Variations of Traditional Villages and Dwellings in Multicultural Blending Areas: A Case Study of the Jiangxi-Anhui Junction Region

Yapeng Duan, Mingxia Chen, Yue Liu et al.

Traditional villages face many difficulties in the era of globalization, especially in light of fast industrialization and urbanization. The breakdown of settlement patterns and the erosion of local characteristics and cultural identities pose critical issues for the sustainable development of these communities. While research on traditional villages and dwellings in core cultural areas is relatively advanced, there remains a significant gap in studies focusing on traditional villages and dwellings in multicultural intermingling regions. By clarifying the characteristics of traditional villages and the cultural landscapes of dwellings under the influence of multiple cultures, as well as their differentiation and underlying mechanisms, this research aims to provide theoretical support for the protective planning of world cultural heritage, which is increasingly characterized by clustering and regionalization. Taking the traditional villages and dwellings in the Jiangxi and Anhui junction area as a case study, we developed a cultural landscape factor system for traditional villages and dwellings across four dimensions: natural environment, spatial configuration, dwelling typology, and historical and cultural context. Using geographic information systems (GIS) zoning methods and statistical spatial analysis, we divided the area into three distinct cultural landscape zones. The findings indicate that the cultural landscapes within each zone exhibit unique regional characteristics at both the village and dwelling levels, particularly in site selection, settlement patterns, and architectural aesthetics. Differentiation across zones is shaped by natural factors, such as topography and water systems, as well as by regional culture, historical migration, the chronological sequence of regional development, commerce and trade growth, and the evolution of administrative systems, alongside broader cultural, economic, and social factors, showing consistent patterns. This study demonstrates that utilizing a scientific and objective zoning approach to accurately identify the cultural landscape characteristics and differentiation patterns across various cultural zones, while clarifying the historical evolution of villages and the transformation of dwelling forms, provides practical insights for cultural landscape zoning in other multicultural regions. Furthermore, it provides scientific guidance to advance China’s rural revitalization strategy and supports the regional protection and sustainable development of world cultural heritage.

Evaluating the influence of modern construction methods on sustainable construction success

Ahsan Waqar, Fadia Al Hajj, Muhammad Danish et al.

Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) have emerged as transformative strategies for enhancing sustainability, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness in the construction sector. This study investigates the influence of MMC on the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainable construction performance. A quantitative research approach was employed, collecting data through structured questionnaires distributed to industry professionals. Statistical analyses, including reliability testing, descriptive statistics, and regression modeling, were conducted to evaluate stakeholder perceptions and the interrelationships among key variables such as cost reduction, stakeholder satisfaction, innovation, and environmental impact. The results indicate that MMC significantly contributes to cost efficiency and social performance, while its influence on environmental outcomes and technology implementation is more nuanced. The findings support the integration of MMC within sustainability-driven construction frameworks and highlight the importance of organizational readiness, innovation capacity, and procurement adaptation. This study contributes empirical evidence to the ongoing discourse on construction modernization and offers strategic insights for enhancing sustainable outcomes through MMC adoption.

Unleashing the Synergy between Human Values and Digital Innovation: A Holistic Framework for Sustainable Future Management Education

Kanimozhi Ganesan

In an age marked by digital transformation and global uncertainty, traditional management education remains helpful but no longer sufficient to prepare leaders for the challenges ahead. This paper proposes a holistic framework that integrates human values with digital innovation to create a future-ready paradigm for business education. Built on a strong foundation of ethics, compassion, environmental care, and technological proficiency, our framework introduces Seven Transformative Educational Pillars and Five Engines of Sustainable Business Development. These elements serve as a blueprint for cultivating conscious, adaptive, and impact-driven leaders. By drawing on ideas from systems thinking, emotional intelligence, and stakeholder theory, as well as lessons learned from hands-on, real-world experiences, the paper highlights real-world applications through global case studies from organizations like Google, Unilever, Patagonia, Amazon, and Zappos. It not only presents these cases as sources of knowledge but also reveals the hidden values these companies uphold during pivotal decision-making moments. By uniting humanistic principles with emerging innovations, the paper offers a visionary yet actionable roadmap for reimagining management education in a rapidly changing world.

The parallel development-type growth planning of socially institutional infrastructure and the transcendency of optimal growth planning

Shungo Sakaki

Abstract To what extent do infrastructure, public capital, and social institutions contribute to economic growth? Unlike private business capitals, these socially institutional infrastructures do not directly generate economic growth. However, liberal economic activity is not completely alone; it depends on wide-ranging external conditions. In other words, private business capitals can be more productive through the externalities produced by the socially institutional infrastructures. When planning for the problem of sustainable allocation of finite and scarce resources, how much should we spend on the socially institutional infrastructures, and to what extent will it be effective? This paper attempts to answer this question with a simulation model that uses Ramsey-type optimal growth planning as a benchmark and performs practical and sequentially adaptive decision-making. As a result, it is possible to draw the following conclusions regarding a growth plan that develops private business capital and socially institutional infrastructure in parallel. First, even in an economy with a low level of capital at the initial stage of planning, it is possible to reach a level of social welfare that exceeds the optimal growth planning in the steady state without developing Keynesian public utilities projects or relying on the introduction of foreign capital as a closed economy system model. In addition, the steady-state levels of capital and consumption are below the modified golden rule level, a long-term growth plan that achieves a more economical resource allocation plan for socially finite scarce resources. It is possible to confirm the sustainable growth process with the parallel development-type planning from the time-series transition of this development-type ratio and the savings rate, which shifts consistently from the beginning of the plan to the steady state. The capital turnover rate continues to improve over the optimal plan toward the stationary state. This fact indicates that the parallel development-type planning achieves an efficient economy. Implications of urban expansion: land, planning and housing in Lagos

Basirat Oyalowo

With an over 20-fold increase in population between 1963 and today, Lagos has expanded significantly both within and outside its city administrative boundaries. Some paradoxes are identified using mixed methodologies from a qualitative research design. Lagos’s northwards expansion has exerted several externalities on a neighbouring state. Expansion within Lagos, on its coastal south-eastern axis, is defined by real estate activities of a different nature. In both cases, new settlements have emerged with differing social and economic characteristics that have far-reaching impact for housing accessibility and affordability. These differences are explored by establishing pull-factors responsible for attracting specific income groups to each axis, the impact of government action (and inaction), and the implications of these for city growth and management. Formal mechanisms of planning lead to a proliferation of higher end real estate development. This has created unequal access to land and housing for lower income families. The subsequent exclusion of lower income families from planned areas represents a failure of the market system. Lagos presents compelling complexities of the management of urban expansion that spread beyond administrative boundaries, as well as the influence of planning to achieve economic development. 'Policy relevance' City managers and policymakers need to plan for expansion in fast growing cities. Urban expansion will flow with the demand for (and availability of) space and will not respect administrative boundaries. Urban containment policies are not known to have a high level of success in African cities, especially in contexts where planning enforcement is weak. Thus, city managers and policymakers must recognise the positive externalities of urban expansion on their cities and provide resources towards optimising this for the common good. They must also take actions towards monitoring and addressing negative externalities from the expansion of neighbouring cities, especially where planning jurisdictions differ. In both cases, government action is required to ensure that resulting housing and real estate markets work for all income classes.

Differences in street-scale built environment preferences towards biking: a latent class analysis of stated choice data

Yanan Liu, Dujuan Yang, Harry J.P. Timmermans et al.

Biking contributes to a better environment by reducing short car trips and improving public health. The street-scale built environment affects the appeal of streets to cyclists, and thus influences route choice behaviour. This study develops a stated choice experiment that systematically varies eight attributes of the built environment to examine preference structure differences pertaining to the street-scale built environment among cyclists in the context of access/egress trip to a metro station. The environment is systematically varied in terms of road length, average number of building floors, retail frontage, cycling facilities at intersections, bike lane width, greenery, lamp density, and crowdedness. Eight hundred and three respondents completed the choice task using face to face interviews in Tianjin, China. Results suggest the existence of two latent classes of cyclists that differ in their preference for the street-scale built environment.

Sentiment Analysis and Topic Modeling of Indonesian Public Conversation about COVID-19 Epidemics on Twitter

Muhammad Habibi, Adri Priadana, Muhammad Rifqi Ma’arif

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 outbreak has resulted in more than six million confirmed cases and more than 371,000 deaths globally on June 1, 2020. The incident sparked a flood of scientific research to help society deal with the virus, both inside and outside the medical domain. Research related to public health analysis and public conversations about the spread of COVID-19 on social media is one of the highlights of researchers in the world. People can analyze information from social media as supporting data about public health. Analyzing public conversations will help the relevant authorities understand public opinion and information gaps between them and the public, helping them develop appropriate emergency response strategies to address existing problems in the community during the pandemic and provide information on the population's emotions in different contexts. However, research related to the analysis of public health and public conversations was so far conducted only through supervised analysis of textual data. In this study, we aim to analyze specifically the sentiment and topic modeling of Indonesian public conversations about the COVID-19 on Twitter using the NLP technique. We applied some methods to analyze the sentiment to obtain the best classification method. In this study, the topic modeling was carried out unsupervised using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA). The results of this study reveal that the most frequently discussed topic related to the COVID-19 pandemic is economic issues.

INFLUENCE OF CORRUPTION ON THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF UKRAINE IN TERMS OF REFORMATION: A RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS

Lesia Savchenko, Anatolii Subbot, Yurii Demianchuk

The subject of the study is to investigate the causes of the influence of corruption on the economic development of Ukraine in the context of reform. Corruption occurs at all levels of society and in some way interferes in all elements of society, and thus negatively affects democracy and economic development of the country. The research methodology involves a retrospective analysis of the problem of inveteracy of corruption associated with the study of its impact on the economy. It is precisely endemic corruption that threatens the formation of Ukraine’s stability and its transition to a market economy. Corruption as one of the most ancient phenomena in society exists in every modern country. The general understanding of corruption is that corruption is detrimental to economic growth. There are also many causes of corruption, namely, a cultural factor, a psychological factor and, therefore, factors associated with the system can cause corruption in every society. The methodological basis for the research was the works of Tylchyk O.V., Bilous V.T., Subbot A.I., Lytvynenko V.I., Hvozdetskyi V.D., Popovych V.M., Bodnarchuk O.H. in the field of administrative law and issues of counteracting and combating corruption, which indicate that there are some factors, such as monopoly power, discretionary power, and low civil servants’ liability, that may provide opportunities for the development of corruption. The purpose of the article was to analyse the causes of the impact of corruption on the country’s economic and political development. Today, corruption has a wide range of activities that undermine the country’s development. Researchers argue that corruption affects the country’s economic growth. However, contradictory evidence was found that corruption can have a positive effect on the country’s economic development or have no significant impact on economic performance. On the basis of analysis of these works, it was established that corruption is the result of institutional weakness, with a potential adverse effect on the country’s economic efficiency. Corruption negatively affects the efficiency of public spending, reduces budget revenues and increases its deficit, impedes foreign direct investment, reduces the effectiveness of international assistance, and hinders economic development. As a result of the analysis, ways to reduce corruption are identified, which suggest a policy of reducing corruption in Ukraine. The result of the study was conclusions on the need to develop and form a coherent system of scientific and legal views on identifying effective anticorruption measures, optimizing and improving the effectiveness of anticorruption activities, with the involvement of international experience in coordinating and minimizing information leakage and engaging civic initiatives among the non-public sector.

Ernesto Zepeda, Juan Antonio Leos, Félix Carvallo
