Transformation of Expressive and Stylistic Means of the Landscape Genre in the Japanese Photography of the 1900s–1920s

Pavlo Zaitsev, Liudmyla Lytvyniuk

The aim of the article is to define tendencies in the transformation of expressive and stylistic means in the Japanese landscape photography of the specified period, based on the analysis of archives of the Japanese landscape photography of the 1900s–1920s. Results. A stylistic transformation of the landscape genre, as well as a passing from the documentary fixation to expressive artistic solutions during the 1900s, are revealed on the example of Kurokawa Suizan’s works. A stylistic stabilisation of the landscape genre which started acquiring moderate expressiveness in the 1910s is grounded. Implementing small-format cameras in the 1910s is analysed using the example of Makoto Yoshino’s creativity, which has contributed to the compositional means’ expansion. The onset of stylistic shifts in the landscape genre during the 1920s under the influence of Constructivist tendencies is revealed on the example of Okubo Koroku’s practice. Scientific novelty. For the first time in the Ukrainian art history, an analysis of the transformation of expressive and stylistic means in the Japanese landscape photography of the 1900s–1920s is conducted. The European pictorialism assimilation and its synthesis with traditional Japanese painting is traced in the aspect of Kurokawa Suizan’s creativity in the 1900s. Materials concerning the influence of Constructivism on the landscape photography development in the 1920s are applied in the scientific circulation. Conclusions. The transformation of expressive and stylistic means in the Japanese landscape photography during the 1900s–1920s highlights a complex interplay between traditional aesthetics, European artistic influences and technical innovations. The 1900s were marked by the adaptation of the European pictorialist principles and their synthesis with the aesthetic basis of monochrome suiboku-ga painting, which led to the formation of a specific arsenal of expressive means. In the second half of the 1920s, under the influence of the Constructivist movement, active experiments with the compositional organisation of the frame and figurative expression means are observed. So, over the course of the 1900s–1920s, the Japanese landscape photography evolved from documentary fixing into an autonomous artistic direction that synthesised Western and national traditions, gradually securing its place in the Japanese cultural discourse.

Leading Question as a Category of Forensic Linguistic Examination

A. Baranov

The article discusses the phenomenon of a leading question as an object of forensic linguistic examination. It shows that the leading question (i) contains semantic information in the form of a proposition (propositional criterion), (ii) brings information within the field of a respondent’s view (relevance criterion), and (iii) reflects the version of the described events that is desirable for an inquirer (engagement criterion). Linguistic examination allows to conclude on the fulfillment of the propositional criterion and the criterion of relevance. The criterion of engagement refers to extralinguistic knowledge and can rarely be proven as the result of the corresponding discourse analysis by linguistic instruments only. The paper analyses the examples of leading questions’ functioning in real discourse including their use in interrogations at the investigative stage and in court hearings. It highlights those segments of the semantics of ‘yes/no-’ and ‘wh-questions’ that are most often used by experienced communicators toconvey their ideas on the most likely answer to the interlocutor. Related phenomena of investigative and judicial discourse are also discussed: tips and “augmented reality” situations. The phenomenon of the leading question should be considered as the interdisciplinary one, having not only linguistic, but also psychological and legal aspects. From the methodological point of view, linguistic examination allows to identify only the linguistic features of leading questions proper – presence of a proposition and relevance (introduction of information into the view field of an addressee). Engagement as a feature of the leading question lies beyond the scope of linguistic knowledge.

Interpretation of Hadith in K-Pop Rejection Narratives within Digital Da‘wah on Social Media

Noor Wahidatul Muyasaroh, Zulham Qudsi Farizal Alam

Background and Objectives: Popular culture has become a major arena for identity construction and value negotiation among youth worldwide. In Indonesia, the global rise of Korean Pop (K-Pop) has sparked tension with religious values, particularly as some Muslim preachers on social media reject K-Pop by citing specific hadith. This study investigates how hadith are represented in online preaching discourses against K-Pop and explores their role in shaping Muslim youth identity within the digital public sphere. Methods: A qualitative approach was employed using Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis. Data were collected from Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok content where hadith were invoked to criticize K-Pop. To deepen interpretation, the analysis combined Abou El-Fadl’s hermeneutics of moral reading with a socio-historical contextual approach, enabling the distinction between literal and contextual uses of hadith in digital da‘wah narratives. Main Findings: The findings demonstrate that hadith such as man tasyabbaha biqawmin fahuwa minhum and al-mar’ ma‘a man ahabba are often interpreted literally to portray K-Pop admiration as a threat to Islamic faith. However, moderate preachers adopt contextual readings that integrate ethical and historical considerations, offering more inclusive approaches to engaging youth. Contribution: This article contributes by filling a gap in existing literature that rarely foregrounds hadith as the core analytical object in the study of religion and popular culture. It provides a critical framework for understanding how sacred texts function in digital identity negotiation. Conclusion: The study concludes that contextual and ethically grounded interpretations of hadith are essential for developing communicative, relevant, and non-authoritarian da‘wah strategies, empowering Muslim youth to engage critically with global cultural flows while retaining strong religious identity.

CSTrack dashboard: A social network data visualization platform for interactive and integrative analysis of discourse

Fernando Martinez-Martinez, David Roldán-Álvarez, Estefanía Martín-Barroso

The discussion in social networks is of general interest, but the extraction, curation and visualization of this information turns difficult for those without programming knowledge. In the framework of the project CSTrack, which studies the activities in Citizen Science, we present an easily accessible dashboard aimed to provide a platform for people of different levels of expertise and professionals. They can retrieve valuable information about the trends and topics inside Twitter with a standardized pipeline for analysis that provides a complete understanding of the state of the conversation in social networks. With this platform, we present an alternative to the lack of standardization in social networking analysis and also, we aim to palliate the insufficiency of replication of social network research.

Certainty Stance Adverbs in Chinese Linguistic Academic Writing: A Corpus-based Study

Natalia M. Dugalich, Hao Han

This study delves into the intricate usage of certainty stance adverbs in the academic writings of the Chinese. The object of this study is to conduct a contrastive analysis of certainty stance adverbs between Chinese linguistic MA novices and linguistic experts. The subject of this study is to explore the similarities and differences in the use of these adverbs within the academic discourse of the two groups mentioned. In addressing these disparities, the study seeks to analyze them from the perspective of interlanguage and interpersonal function, with the ultimate goal of enhancing the production of high-quality academic papers by the Chinese. The study employs two key methods: the contrastive analysis method and the corpus-based method. The novelty of the study lies in its contrastive examination of certainty stance adverbs between Chinese linguistic MA novices and experts. Through an in-depth analysis of theoretical frameworks and linguistic data extracted from the MA theses of Chinese linguistic novices and research articles of linguistic experts, the study underscores the importance of considering the similarities and differences in the use of certainty stance adverbs within the realm of second language acquisition and pragmatic studies. This consideration aims to refine learners’ syntactical and pragmatic command of certainty stance adverbs to align with expert academic discourse, ultimately fostering effective interpersonal communication in academic writing. The findings of this research offer valuable insights into the specific linguistic challenges encountered by the Chinese, thereby laying a solid groundwork for the development of targeted pedagogical strategies to bolster their academic writing skills.

The Power of Language

Lindsay Woodbridge

While human service professionals are trained to listen carefully to our clients, we receive little training on how to listen to and analyze the professional discourse that surrounds us. In this article, I introduce critical discourse analysis (CDA) as a set of tools for unpacking how power works in forms of discourse such as policy, legislation, and communication between individuals with unequal amounts of power. To illustrate the process and purpose of CDA, I analyze policy text from the counseling profession. Specifically, I analyze the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) Board of Director’s charge to the 2024 CACREP Standards Revision Committee. I examine active versus passive sentence construction, imperative and declarative sentence mode, and speech act values to explore what the language in the charge reveals about how power works in the CACREP standards revision process. The analysis reveals three differing yet co-existing depictions of power. I claim that the Board of Directors used these varying depictions of power to make a claim about the legitimacy of the standards revision process. I conclude with implications for critical discourse analysis as a method for research and as a tool for training and advocacy.

Zoofolkloristics: Imagination as a Critical Component

Teya Brooks Pribac, Marjetka Golež Kaučič

Nonhuman animal protagonists of folklore texts in the European space have tended to be perceived primarily as performing a symbolic and metaphoric function. But behind the symbols and the metaphors hide real flesh-and-blood nonhuman animals, and flesh-and-blood humans interacting with them, mostly from a position of power. The emerging discipline of zoofolkloristics considers nonhuman animals in their own right. Through critical analysis of folklore material, zoofolkloristics examines the role of animals and power relations within the interspecies entanglement with the aim of deconstructing the oppressive system and establishing multispecies justice. We begin this paper with a brief reflection on the ‘historical animal’ as an embodied being and a human construct. We then perform a critical re-reading of three animal-related folklore texts from the Slovenian tradition and, applying Hubert Zapf’s concept of imaginative counter-discourse, consider the potential of imagination as a methodological tool in the transformative program of zoofolkloristics. Implications for animal ethics, liberation, and conservation are also discussed.

Prishvin on Stalin’s Collectivization: Observations of a Contemporary

A. M. Podoksenov

This article examines the perspectives of M. M. Prishvin on the collectivization of agriculture, utilizing materials from his “Diary”, which have only recently entered scholarly discourse in the post-Soviet years. The choice of this topic is motivated by the ongoing relevance and intensity of discussions surrounding the Stalin era in Soviet society. The focus of this study is a previously unexamined aspect within Prishvin studies: the writer’s attitude toward the radical transformation of traditional Russian peasant life. It is demonstrated that Prishvin, on one hand, critiques the ruthless methods employed in implementing collectivization, while on the other hand, acknowledges the positive aspects of the economic reforms occurring in rural areas. The significance of Prishvin’s insights regarding the origins and causes of collectivization is further underscored by the fact that his conclusions often predate those of several later researchers of the Soviet period. Prishvin’s analysis of both subjective and objective factors influencing Stalin’s collectivization reveals him not only as a gifted writer but also as an exceptional thinker with a distinct perspective on the pressing ideological, political, economic, and sociocultural issues of his time.

Text analysis of billboards and infographic graphics advertising COVID-19 on promoting preventive behaviors and taking vaccination against the coronavirus pandemic and investigating the opinions of the Iranian adult population

Fereshteh Mohamadpour, Gary Groot, Ardalan Askarian et al.

Abstract Background Advertising is one of the most important solutions that health centers and medical services around the world use to try to encourage public opinion to create a positive attitude towards preventive measures and vaccination. This study has been done with the aim of text analysis of billboards and infographics related to promoting preventive behaviors and vaccination against the coronavirus pandemic and providing solutions and models for preventive information and advertising in the field of health. Methods The study method in this research is a combination of qualitative and content analysis. Data collection was done in a targeted manner. The sample size includes 33 advertising billboards and infographics. Data collection has been done through searching the sites and websites of health networks and medical education centers in Iran, taking pictures of infographics and billboards in public places, and also receiving archive files of pictures from the public relations of health networks and medical services. The data was collected from February 19, 2020 to December 30, 2022 (the time frame of the pandemic and public vaccination program in Iran). The data was analyzed based on the three-dimensional discourse analysis theory of Fairclough. Then, an online survey about promoting preventive behaviors and vaccination against the coronavirus pandemic in the format of billboards and infographics was designed in SurveyMonkey and its link was provided to the audience through virtual networks and other platforms. The age group of people was selected from 18 to 70 years. Considering that the number of participants should be representative of the entire community under investigation, therefore, based on Cochran’s formula, the sample size was equal to 350 people. Finally, users’ opinions were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The assessment of validity involved experts in infection control and linguistics. The reliability of the measurement, determined through the Cronbach’s alpha internal consistency coefficient, yielded a coefficient of 0.968. Results The results show that among the four linguistic components of words, syntax, coherence and text structure; “live metaphors”, “pronoun “we”, “collocation and reference”, and “attitude markers” have the most impact on the audience. The frequency percentage of the data shows that these language elements have tremendous power in attracting the audience to perform preventive behaviors. The results show that the language reflects the culture, opinions and needs of people in the society. Also, the results show that encouraging people to perform preventive behaviors should be through the integration of medical information with motivational linguistic factors in order to attract the audience more. Conclusions It can be concluded that the use of the appropriate pattern of medical advertising discourse and correct communication strategies, will help public participation in the field of epidemic control. The language of effective health education and health communication during an epidemic must be related to the ways of thinking and speaking of ordinary people. Also, words with metaphorical and ironic meanings have a high potential to influence the health performance of people in society and increase public awareness of health communication. Therefore, using them to create a new value system with the aim of controlling and overcoming the consequences of the epidemic is very effective.

Building the Bonds: A Comparison of Diaspora Engagement Policies in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan

Amina Urpekova

Diaspora are thought to have political, economic, and social potential in both home and host countries. They are a source of economic investments and remittances for home countries, which can account for a significant portion of a country’s GDP in some cases. The diaspora’s expertise, knowledge, and skills can help social and cultural development in the country of origin. To gain access to these economic, social, and political resources, countries of origin develop diaspora engagement policies and incorporate the diaspora into national political discourse. Central Asian countries are developing relationships with diasporas and compatriot communities, as well as implementing state diaspora engagement policies, while taking diaspora capacity and migration outflow into account. However, the historical, political, economic, and social characteristics of the region’s countries have an impact on policy content and implementation. This paper investigates and compares the main characteristics of Central Asian countries’ diaspora policies, as well as seeks to comprehend and reveal the nature of the state governance system’s impact on diaspora relations. Two Central Asian countries, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, have been chosen as case studies to examine with document analysis methodology from 2016 to the present, as this period coincides with policy activation in both countries.

COVID-19 and persons with disabilities in the Philippines: A policy analysis

Jacqueline Veronica Velasco, Joseph Christian Obnial, Adriel Pastrana et al.

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic warrants an immediate response. Persons with disabilities (PWDs) are one of the most vulnerable populations susceptible to marginalization. While there are existing guidelines in the Philippines that aim to assist their basic needs, a call for inclusivity in policymaking for the COVID-19 response is highly advocated. This paper aims to analyze existing policy guidelines concerning the welfare of PWDs in the country based on several policy domains. Methods: Relevant documents were acquired through extensive search of government and nongovernment websites and news agencies. Literature included memorandums, circulars, and news bulletins in the period between January 2020 to May 2021. This study conducted a framework analysis on policies enacted by the Philippine government during the COVID-19 pandemic concerning PWDs. The framework was divided into eight areas: access to (1) information, (2)healthcare, (3) education, and (4) financial support, (5) protection from infection in residential settings, (6) reasonable accommodation, (7) consideration for disabled people facing multiple exclusions, and (8) inclusion to decision-making process. Results: Fifteen PWD related COVID-19 response documents from the Philippines were reviewed and analyzed. Most policies corresponded to themes related to financial support and reasonable accommodations. Most documents were limited to proposals and suggestions with only a few documents including specific details on how the program will be implemented and monitored. Conclusion: The state has proven its cognizance for PWDs; however, implementation and its impact remain to be seen. The government needs to evaluate these efforts to identify gaps and barriers. A comprehensive national database should be implemented to centralize registration of PWDs, and efforts should be made to inform and educate PWDs of their rights and of existing programs. Most importantly, PWDs should be included in the discourse and decision-making process to ensure programs are acceptable and accessible.

MANIPULATIVE DISCOURSE IN GEORGE ORWEL’S ANIMAL FARM

Edi Pujo Basuki, Nailul Authar

Animal Farm has been called George Orwell’s most ferocious propaganda (Voorhees, 1961 quoted in Jasim, M. H. and Aziz, Fatimah H). This novel is a satire referring to a communist regime persistently utilizing the kind of hypocritical propaganda merely for the purpose of keeping its totalitarian regime in power.. Animal Farm demonstrates more of such manipulative discourse, and this will be the focus of the study. The contribution of this study is that understanding manipulative discourse and its strategies gives a view of manipulative mechanism and thereby help people recognizing any hegemony form by those in power. The framework of the study applied Cognitive Pragmatics for Manipulative Discourse and Relevance Theory. The result of the study describes the characters that represent manipulative discourse as well as the types of the employed strategies (both global and local, both linguistic and non-linguistic ones). Manipulative discourses employed in the novel are produced or reproduced for two main general purposes. Firstly, the political discourses produced by Old Major is to convince all the animals of the necessity to fight against the human being for the freedom of the animals. The ideology exercised by the animals is anti-human ideology. Secondly, the manipulative discourses produced and reproduced by the pigs are to exercise their domination over the rest of the animals. The ideology of the pigs’ racism is exercised to gain more power, more privilege, and more access to the farm resources.
