Features of the functioning of the altmetric methodology Research Interest Score (using the example of the profiles of professors of National Aerospace University "Kharkiv Aviation Institute")

Kysliuk Kostiantyn

The purpose of the article is to clarify the peculiarities of the functioning of the altmetric methodology Research Interest Score from the world’s most popular academic social network ResearchGate.net in library and information science. Research methodology. Using statistical calculations and the citation analysis method it had been compared the scientometric indicators from an arbitrary stratified sample of profiles of professors of the National Aerospace University "Kharkiv Aviation Institute" in ResearchGate and Google Scholar. Scientific novelty. For the first time, the profiles with three different levels of altmetric indicators were simultaneously studied (RI Score > 1000; RI Score = 100-1000; RI Score, <100). For professors individually, for groups with different levels of RI Score and the sample as a whole, a statistical calculation of the coincidence coefficient of citation indices (Kh) was carried out. The index coincidence coefficient was the percentage of the RG citation index to the GS citation index (typically, the Hirsch index). Specific citations to five publications in the upper part of the scientist profiles, generated by RG and GS, respectively, were compared. The citation coincidence coefficient (Kc) was established as the percentage of the sum of common citations in GS and RG to the largest number - the sum of citations of scientific works in the sample found by GS algorithms. Conclusions. The analysis showed the presence of a moderate correlation between the classical and alternative metrics. In particular, the final arithmetic mean coincidence coefficient of citation indices from RG and GS was 66.1%. However, with an increase in the level of bibliometric indicators, this connection became increasingly stronger and for the group of professors with high bibliometric indicators (RI Score > 1000) was already 81.9%. The citation coincidence coefficient, which had an average value of 51.7% and was approximately the same for all groups with different altmetric markers, proved the real alternativeness of the GS and RG search algorithms. The possibility of manipulating altmetrics by artificially increasing the number of recommendations is confirmed. Their main advantage is emphasized - demonstrating the knowing of scientific work through a significant impact on their value of the number of views and full readings of the texts of publications.

Study on ICT Proficiency among Working Librarians in Academic Libraries

prangyasini Nayak, M. Mishra

Information Communication Technology (ICT) has dramatically altered all human activities, including the library and information science fields, in order to assess the level of ICT literacy among library professionals and the need for training and orientation in ICT-based resources and services for library professionals working in Academic Libraries. This research gives an overview of how library professionals use information and communication technology-based resources and services. There is optimism that the majority of library professionals are ICT literate and have the foundational ICT skills. As ICT applications have evolved, libraries now provide print, electronic, and ICT-based information services, altering our perception of how LIS specialists serve users. Individuals may now get information without wasting time thanks to technological advancements. Information distribution and access patterns are shifting away from traditional technologies and toward digital ones. Due to the digital transformation, LIS professionals must learn how to use a variety of ICT tools, such as automation, bibliographic standards, ICT-based library services, web 2.0 skills, mobile information services, ILMS, Citation, IR, and others, in order to perform their duties effectively. The current study aims to identify critical ICT abilities among LIS workers, particularly in Academic Libraries. ICT expertise is now required, not optional, for library personnel. Librarians must continue to successfully manage digital resources, improve user experiences, safeguard data privacy and security, and adapt to the rapidly changing information ecosystem. Individuals may now get information without wasting time thanks to technological advancements

Assessing Comparative Effectiveness of Metadata Creation with Specialized and General Standards for Representing Artworks

Vyacheslav Zavalin, Oksana L. Zavalina

Abstract This paper reports the results of the exploratory study of metadata quality, measured against major criteria of accuracy, completeness, and consistency and 18 categories based on them, in bibliographic records that represent artworks: paintings in their original analog form. The study relied on in-depth qualitative and quantitative content analysis methods in examination of the Visual Resources Association (VRA) Core 4.0 metadata that follows a standard developed specifically for representing works of art and the Dublin Core (DCTERMS) metadata that follows a standard widely used for representing various kinds of resources, including artworks. The metadata was created by the students in the digital library metadata course taught in one of the United States graduate programs of Library and Information Science. Our analysis identified metadata fields in which novice metadata creators tend to make mistakes (including representation of paintings’ aboutness and relations to other resources) and indicated the need to place more emphasis on addressing these issues in designing and implementing metadata training. Examples of the commonly occurring kinds of metadata errors for each of the three quality criteria (accuracy, completeness, and consistency) are discussed and compared for two datasets, as well as to results of previous relevant research, and in the context of information user tasks. The paper concludes with a summary of the findings, discussion of implications, and ideas for future research in this area.

AriAplBud: An Aerial Multi-Growth Stage Apple Flower Bud Dataset for Agricultural Object Detection Benchmarking

Wenan Yuan

As one of the most important topics in contemporary computer vision research, object detection has received wide attention from the precision agriculture community for diverse applications. While state-of-the-art object detection frameworks are usually evaluated against large-scale public datasets containing mostly non-agricultural objects, a specialized dataset that reflects unique properties of plants would aid researchers in investigating the utility of newly developed object detectors within agricultural contexts. This article presents AriAplBud: a close-up apple flower bud image dataset created using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based red–green–blue (RGB) camera. AriAplBud contains 3600 images of apple flower buds at six growth stages, with 110,467 manual bounding box annotations as positive samples and 2520 additional empty orchard images containing no apple flower bud as negative samples. AriAplBud can be directly deployed for developing object detection models that accept Darknet annotation format without additional preprocessing steps, serving as a potential benchmark for future agricultural object detection research. A demonstration of developing YOLOv8-based apple flower bud detectors is also presented in this article.

A Sociotechnical Transition to an Electric Autonomous Vehicle System

Seyedamirreza Enjavi, Shaban Elahi, Ali Shayan et al.

Abstract Modern economic growth has been based on mass industrial production and consumption, which have heavily relied on fossil fuels and energy waste since the 18th century. Hence, current socio-technical systems are unsustainable in meeting humans’ basic needs, such as energy and mobility. Fossil energy resources are non-renewable and, on the one hand, contribute to emissions that cause unreliable harm to the environment. In this research, the prime theory of Transformational Change illuminates how to use science and technology policy to meet social needs sustainably and inclusively in societies. This article answers questions regarding the essential policies and governance measures that states need to implement for the transition to electric autonomous vehicles (AVs) in the socio-technical system. Using meta-synthesis, followed by a case study and interviews with experts in the electric AV field, the article identifies state policies and governance measures to facilitate the transition of the sociotechnical system into electric AVs. The conceptualization of these roles determines that the state’s role is influenced by policy, governance, and legal decisions, which are ultimately implemented through specific combinations of policies.

Linking digital literacy and online information searching strategies of Philippine university students: The moderating role of mindfulness

Manny B. Atoy, F. García, Rayanne R. Cadungog et al.

The extent to which students are able to maximize the potential benefits of information from the online world depends, in great measure, on the development of a set of skills that would make them effective users and decision-makers. While previous studies have revealed the role of prior knowledge, availability of ICT resources and infrastructure in the development of information-type skills, the identification of other unexplored variables remains important in information science. This paper seeks to ascertain the moderating role of mindfulness on digital literacy and online information searching strategies on a select group of university students in the Philippines. Structural equation modeling was used to test a hypothesized model and explore the factors affecting the information-seeking behavior of 321 students from the largest comprehensive university in the Philippines. A multi-aspect instrument, consisting of a robotfoto, and three scales such as the Langer Mindfulness Scale (LMS), Internet Skills Scale (ISS), and Online Information Searching Strategies Inventory (OISSI), was used in this study. Results revealed that digital literacy had a direct positive relationship with the online information searching strategies of students. Surprisingly, mindfulness did not moderate the relationship between digital literacy and online information searching strategies. Further, digital literacy was found to be a mediating factor to university students’ information searching strategies. Implications of these for library practice and policy are discussed in this paper.

Tomás Marín Velásquez, Dany Day Josefina Arriojas Tocuyo

Wikipedia (and his brothers) to network and improve services

Silvia Bruni, Benedetta Calonaci, Susanna Giaccai et al.

Only five years ago, the Italian librarians, archivists and museologists where both curious about and skeptical in order to collaborate, as knowledge organization professionals, with Wikipedia. However, nowadays there are many initiatives and projects in this area, so it is possible to find a common ground. Professionals are involved directly in Wikipedia as editors, making more visible their collections through digitization in Commons and Wikisource, and as mediators helping their users to become Wikipedians. Recently, some experiences have been implemented with the purpose of integrating traditional services (catalogues, reference service, etc.) and Wikimedia projects. Linked open data technology increases this possibility. The free encyclopedia organization is very different from institutional functioning and background. The monitoring of mutual influences is necessary. MAB coordination was created to integrate the services and professional skills of museums, archives and libraries. MAB is the proper place for different types of professionals to share their experiences. The article presents the projects developed in Tuscany in the last two years, mainly in libraries and museums.

Knowledge acquisition process as an issue in information sciences

Boris Bosančić

The paper presents an overview of some problems of information science which are explicitly portrayed in literature. It covers the following issues: information explosion, information flood and data deluge, information retrieval and relevance of information, and finally, the problem of scientific communication. The purpose of this paper is to explain why knowledge acquisition, can be considered as an issue in information sciences. The existing theoretical foundation within the information sciences, i.e. the DIKW hierarchy and its key concepts - data, information, knowledge and wisdom, is recognized as a symbolic representation as well as the theoretical foundation of the knowledge acquisition process. Moreover, it seems that the relationship between the DIKW hierarchy and the knowledge acquisition process is essential for a stronger foundation of information sciences in the 'body' of the overall human knowledge. In addition, the history of both the human and machine knowledge acquisition has been considered, as well as a proposal that the DIKW hierarchy take place as a symbol of general knowledge acquisition process, which could equally relate to both human and machine knowledge acquisition. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to modify the existing concept of the DIKW hierarchy. The appropriate modification of the DIKW hierarchy (one of which is presented in this paper) could result in a much more solid theoretical foundation of the knowledge acquisition process and information sciences as a whole. The theoretical assumptions on which the knowledge acquisition process may be established as a problem of information science are presented at the end of the paper. The knowledge acquisition process does not necessarily have to be the subject of epistemology. It may establish a stronger link between the concepts of data and knowledge; furthermore, it can be used in the context of scientific research, but on the more primitive level than conducting of scientific methods. Moreover, the description of this process, as opposed to other problems of information sciences, necessarily involves all four DIKW concepts. Finally, the solution of this problem may result in a more complete theory of information.
