In this perspective, it focuses specifically on African countries and enriches the results with a comparative approach. Indeed, using a gravity model for 49 African countries and all their trading partners from 1990 to 2019, the paper proposes a comparative analysis of the effects of uncertainty on global trade in value chains and on trade in value chains within Africa. The robustness of the results shows that domestic uncertainty can drive the expansion of intra-African trade in value chains, while uncertainty in the partner country hinders the flourishing of trade relationships within a value chain.","source":"DOAJ","year":2025,"language":"","subjects":["Cities. While most of the research on conviviality focuses on (inter-)cultural differences, this article argues that considering other kinds of differences (e.g., socio-economic status, gender, age, stage of the life course, etc.) may increase our understanding of conviviality. In addition, to help us measure the convivial use of public space, the article looks at participation in “optional activities” (e.g., enjoying the sun, playing), which contribute to a convivial atmosphere by encouraging people to be co-present, thus offering the potential for “thicker sociability.” Based on fieldwork consisting of behavioural mapping (n = 1,448) and an intercept survey (n = 1,474), this study explores key factors that increase the likelihood of people using three small public squares in Zurich, Switzerland, in a convivial way. A logistic regression model based on survey data shows that, even when controlling for individual factors, the squares and their affordances contribute substantially to convivial use, e.g., by providing ample seating. The model furthermore suggests that gender, people’s relationship to the neighbourhood, their occupation, and the time of day, are more significant factors in shaping convivial use of the squares than the cultural background, socio-economic status, age, or having children.","source":"DOAJ","year":2023,"language":"","subjects":["City planning"],"doi":"10.17645/up.v8i4.6237","url":"https://www.cogitatiopress.com/urbanplanning/article/view/6237","is_open_access":true,"published_at":"","score":67},{"id":"doaj_Dise%C3%B1o+del+paisaje%2C+salud+y+sustentabilidad++en+el+ambiente+hospitalario","title":"Diseño del paisaje, salud y sustentabilidad en el ambiente hospitalario","authors":[{"name":"Eduardo Ottaviani"}],"abstract":"\nEl presente artículo desarrolla conceptos relacionados con la función que cumplen los espacios verdes en la salud y las influencias históricas de propuestas higienistas en edificios hospitalarios. Soundscape has been considered as a part of the intangible heritage, and it refers to the perceptual quality. In the realm of built environment, perceptual qualities become important concerns, since cultural heritage cannot be described and appreciated using mono-sensorial analysis fundamentally based on vision. As perceptual construct, soundscape has been considered as a new approach in understanding the formation and design of sensitive urban environment. It is argued that perceptual quality, besides visual aesthetics, geographic, psychological and socio-cultural aspects, must be part of the considerations in architecture and urban design. Bandung is well-known for its urban heritage, and as former well-designed colonial town, the historic buildings and areas have morphologically constituted the structure of the inner city. However, the modernization and globalization have led to inevitable transformations, including the destruction of historic places and fabric/district of cultural significance. With the latest urban dynamics, urban environment has also experienced an inescapable process of “sound globalization”, which led to the losing of specific sound-marks in the respective area. This paper is based upon an ongoing research project on strategy for conservation of historic urban areas using soundscape approach. Methodologically, through sound walks, surveys and interviews, several notions relating to urban spatial and formal quality have been collected, assessed and interpreted. The result stands for the understanding of perceptual aspects and quality of urban space in historic urban areas that may contribute to the heritage conservation strategy.","source":"DOAJ","year":2019,"language":"","subjects":["Regional planning","City planning"],"doi":"10.14710/tataloka.21.2.371-380","url":"https://ejournal2.undip.ac.id/index.php/tataloka/article/view/4457","is_open_access":true,"published_at":"","score":63},{"id":"doaj_10.3389/fbuil.2019.00093","title":"Experimental Testing of a Small-Scale Truss Beam That Adapts to Loads Through Large Shape Changes","authors":[{"name":"Arka P. Previous studies have shown that substantial whole-life energy savings with respect to traditional passive designs can be achieved through well-conceived adaptive design strategies. The whole-life energy comprises an embodied part in the material and an operational part for structural adaptation. Structural adaptation through controlled large shape changes allows a significant stress redistribution so that the design is not governed by extreme loads with long return periods. This way, material utilization is maximized and embodied energy is reduced. A design process based on shape optimization has been formulated to obtain shapes that are optimal for each load case. A geometrically non-linear force method is employed to control the structure into required shapes. This paper presents the experimental testing of a small-scale prototype adaptive structure produced by this design process. The structure is a simply supported planar truss. Shape adaptation is achieved through controlled length changes of turnbuckles that strategically replace some of the structural elements. The stress is monitored by strain sensors fitted on some of the truss elements. The nodal coordinates are monitored by an optical tracking system. Numerical predictions and measurements have a minimum Pearson correlation of 0.86 which indicates good accordance. Although scaling effects have to be further investigated, experimental testing on a small-scale prototype has been useful to assess the feasibility of the design and control methods outlined in this work. Results show that stress homogenization through controlled large shape changes is feasible.","source":"DOAJ","year":2019,"language":"","subjects":["Engineering (General). It is largely viewed as a potential strategy for societal development, aimed to increase prosperity while reducing dependence on raw materials and energy. Many businesses regard circular economy as a way to enhance economic growth and increase profits. Governments across the world actively engage in the discussion about the benefits of a transition to a circular economy and about its impact on employment, economic growth, and the environment. This paper aims to study the major issues of circular economy, to identify its advantages, and to offer an insight into the transition stage the Baltic States are undergoing today on their way to circular economy. It is stressed that the Baltic countries are not fully using the opportunities offered by a circular economy. For example, Latvia’s, Lithuania’s, and Estonia’s recycling rates are significantly below those of other European countries. The Baltics depend heavily on EU financial support. An increase in funding will contribute to the implementation of circular economy technologies.","source":"DOAJ","year":2017,"language":"","subjects":["Regional economics. This means that structures, and their parts, need to undergo change in terms of space and function to adapt to different functionalities and conditions. One understanding of preservation is based on the idea that with a change in function, historical structures which have outlived their original purpose are given new life and once again are made part of the urban landscape. Instances of functional change are most often seen in monumental and historical industrial structures, and in the examples of civil architecture remaining in areas set aside for housing settlements as a result of rapid urbanization. It is important, however, that any functional change made to a historical structure serves to protect the architectural value, meaning and memory of the structure. Alsancak is home to a large number of historical Levantine houses, many of which, following rapid urbanization in the 1970s, have had to change their function to that of bar or café. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the re-functioning on these houses in Alsancak, and to make some recommendations on both the processes involved in re-functioning, and on the current legal regulations governing these processes with a view to ameliorating the negative effects of re-functioning on such structures.","source":"DOAJ","year":2015,"language":"","subjects":["Architecture","City planning"],"doi":"10.5505/MEGARON.2015.86570","url":"http://www.journalagent.com/megaron/pdfs/MEGARON_10_1_57_69.pdf","is_open_access":true,"published_at":"","score":59},{"id":"doaj_10.6092/1970-9870/2511","title":"Mapping Smart Regions. In the procedure a relational dimension is mainly subsumed in the system oriented perspective adopted in selecting the indicators which would best represent the system determinants depending on the goals of the analysis (step a).  In order to get deeper insights into the smartness profile of the European regions, this study makes an effort to account of the relational dimension also in steps b and c of the procedure. The novelties of the proposed approach are twofold. First, by computing region-to-region distances associated with the selected indicators it extends the conventional ranking procedure (step c). Second, it uses a relational database (step b), dealing with the regional participation to the FP7-ICT project, to modify the distances and investigate its impact on the interpretation of the regional positioning.  The main results of this exercise seem to suggest that regional collaborations would have a positive role in regional convergence process. By providing an opportunity to get contacts with the areas endowed with a comparatively more robust smartness profile, regions may have a chance to enhance their own smartness profile.","source":"DOAJ","year":2014,"language":"","subjects":["Transportation engineering","Urbanization.
