After reviewing scholarship on dark patterns and synthesizing fragmented empirical research on children’s encounters with manipulative design, the article applies Mathur, Mayer, and Kshirsagar’s (2021) normative framework to assess harms across individual welfare, collective welfare, regulatory objectives, and autonomy in children’s contexts. Drawing on vulnerability theory, children’s rights instruments, and childhood studies, it situates children within this taxonomy to clarify how developmental characteristics and relational dependencies shape exposure to manipulation in digital environments. Children constitute a particularly revealing analytical lens for understanding digital vulnerability: while developmental characteristics heighten their exposure to manipulation, dark patterns exploit cognitive features universally shared. By engaging both particularist and universalist accounts, the article argues that protective measures developed with children in mind may establish baseline standards addressing digital vulnerability more broadly.","source":"DOAJ","year":2026,"language":"","subjects":["Social legislation"],"doi":"10.35295/osls.iisl.2351","url":"https://opo.iisj.net/index.php/osls/article/view/2351","is_open_access":true,"published_at":"","score":70},{"id":"arxiv_2601.04579","title":"Towards a Sociology of Sociology: Inequality, Elitism, and Prestige in the Sociological Enterprise From 1970 to the Present","authors":[{"name":"Gavin Cook"}],"abstract":"There is a science of science and an informal economics of economics, but there is not a cohesive sociology of sociology. Networks of multiple interdependent and interacting humans and intelligent machines constitute complex social systems for which the collective outcomes cannot be deduced from either human or machine behaviour alone. Under this paradigm, we review recent research and identify general dynamics and patterns in situations of competition, coordination, cooperation, contagion and collective decision-making, with context-rich examples from high-frequency trading markets, a social media platform, an open collaboration community and a discussion forum. To ensure more robust and resilient human–machine communities, we require a new sociology of humans and machines. Researchers should study these communities using complex system methods; engineers should explicitly design artificial intelligence for human–machine and machine–machine interactions; and regulators should govern the ecological diversity and social co-development of humans and machines. This Perspective calls for a new sociology of humans and machines to study groups and networks comprising multiple interacting humans and algorithms, bots or robots. A deeper understanding of human–machine social systems can contribute new and valued insights for AI research, design and policy.","source":"Semantic Scholar","year":2024,"language":"en","subjects":["Medicine","Computer Science","Physics"],"doi":"10.1038/s41562-024-02001-8","url":"https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/2e5efaa8356a0afd27bc0dafe33492f7afeee3e2","is_open_access":true,"citations":63,"published_at":"","score":69.89},{"id":"ss_3387e1fd08932c186c80f1ebc0da1966b26a01e0","title":"The sociology of emotions: Four decades of progress","authors":[{"name":"Eduardo Bericat"}],"abstract":"","source":"Semantic Scholar","year":2016,"language":"en","subjects":["Sociology"],"doi":"10.1177/0011392115588355","url":"https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/3387e1fd08932c186c80f1ebc0da1966b26a01e0","is_open_access":true,"citations":328,"published_at":"","score":69.84},{"id":"doaj_10.21685/2072-3016-2025-2-7","title":"The significance of the Second Hague Peace conference in the development of the institution of peaceful settlement of international disputes","authors":[{"name":"B.V. Domestic diplomacy and international legal science played a leading role in the formation of the institution of peaceful resolution of international disputes. It was Russia that initiated two Hague Peace Conferences in 1899 and 1907. However, this issue has not received sufficient attention from domestic and foreign researchers, the latter, however, actively studied the role of the United States, Great Britain, France and other countries in terms of the development of the institution of peaceful resolution of international disputes. In this regard, the study of the content and results of the Second Peace Conference and its historical significance seems relevant and scientifically significant. The purpose of the work is to identify the main directions and achievements of the Hague Peace Conference of 1907 in the context of the development of the institution of peaceful resolution of international disputes. Materials and methods. These objectives are achieved by analyzing the official materials of the 1907 Hague Peace Conference, official acts of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, assessments of the conference's achievements given by its participants themselves, as well as international treaties and scientific literature. Results. The work analyzes the work and results of the 1907 forum from the point of view of the development of the institution of peaceful resolution of international disputes. Conclu-sions. The study allows us to draw a conclusion about the special role of Russian diplomacy and international legal science in the codification of the institution of peaceful resolution of international disputes and the progressive development of international law in general.","source":"DOAJ","year":2025,"language":"","subjects":["Law","Sociology (General)"],"doi":"10.21685/2072-3016-2025-2-7","url":"","is_open_access":true,"published_at":"","score":69},{"id":"doaj_10.18778/2300-1690.29.12","title":"Zbliżenia. A growing body of work in sociology and related fields demonstrates both the potential advantages and risks of GenAI, but these studies are largely proof-of-concept or specific audits of models and products. We know comparatively little about how sociologists actually use GenAI in their research practices and how they view its present and future role in the discipline. In this paper, we describe the current landscape of GenAI use in sociological research based on a survey of authors in 50 sociology journals. Our sample includes both computational sociologists and non-computational sociologists and their collaborators. We find that sociologists primarily use GenAI to assist with writing tasks: revising, summarizing, editing, and translating their own work. Respondents report that GenAI saves time and that they are curious about its capabilities, but they do not currently feel strong institutional or field-level pressure to adopt it. Overall, respondents are wary of GenAI's social and environmental impacts and express low levels of trust in its outputs, but many believe that GenAI tools will improve over the next several years. We do not find large differences between computational and non-computational scholars in terms of GenAI use, attitudes, and concern; nor do we find strong patterns by familiarity or frequency of use. We discuss what these findings suggest about the future of GenAI in sociology and highlight challenges for developing shared norms around its use in research practice.","source":"arXiv","year":2025,"language":"en","subjects":["cs.CY","cs.AI"],"url":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2511.16884","pdf_url":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2511.16884","is_open_access":true,"published_at":"2025-11-21T01:34:28Z","score":69},{"id":"arxiv_2503.17843","title":"Measuring Vogue in American Sociology (2011-2020)","authors":[{"name":"Alex Xiaoqin Yan"},{"name":"Honglin Bao"},{"name":"Tom R. Departing from traditional approaches focused on citations, co-authorship, and faculty hiring, we introduce a method capturing the dynamics of networks inferred from text to explore which ideas gain traction (a.k.a vogue). Drawing on sociology doctoral dissertations and journal abstracts, we trace the movement of word pairs between peripheral and core semantic networks to uncover dominant themes and methodological trajectories. Our findings demonstrate that regional location and institutional prestige play critical roles in shaping the production and adoption of research trends across 114 sociology PhD-granting institutions in the United States. We show that applied research topics, such as crime and health, despite being perceived as less prestigious than theoretically oriented subjects, serve as the primary driving force behind the emergence and diffusion of trends within the discipline. This work sheds light on the institutional mechanisms that govern knowledge production, demonstrating that sociology's intellectual landscape is not dictated by simple top-down diffusion from elite institutions but is instead structured by the contextual and institutional factors that facilitate specialization and segmentation.","source":"arXiv","year":2025,"language":"en","subjects":["cs.SI","cs.CY"],"url":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2503.17843","pdf_url":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2503.17843","is_open_access":true,"published_at":"2025-03-22T19:29:12Z","score":69},{"id":"ss_61535bb1e8f3de2b000085a622b95161c1a132c6","title":"New directions in the sociology of tourism","authors":[{"name":"S. Due to their small scale, their importance is often overlooked by experts and investors. The paper describes the concept of canopies at public transport stops in Belgrade, which were created in the period from 2007 to the present day. By multiplying the basic type of canopy and its variations, a recognizable element of the city image is built. By upgrading the basic project and introducing additional elements from the repertoire of modern design, such as \"green\" constructions, \"smart\" technologies, energy efficiency, etc., this form of urban space would be additionally affirmed and contribute not only to the comfort of users, the creation of the identity of the city and public city transport, but also to general interests such as safety, health and environmental protection","source":"DOAJ","year":2023,"language":"","subjects":["Architecture","Urban groups. This paper proposes a sensitivity analysis framework to systematically evaluate how unmeasured confounders influence statistical inference in sociology. Given these sensitivity analysis methods, we introduce a five-step workflow that integrates sensitivity analysis into research design rather than treating it as a post-hoc robustness check. Using the Blau and Duncan (1967) study as an empirical example, we demonstrate how different sensitivity methods provide complementary insights. By extending existing frameworks, we show how sensitivity analysis enhances causal transparency, offering a practical tool for assessing uncertainty in observational research. In contrast to the earliest days of research in this subfield, much recent work has moved beyond preoccupations with whiteness as a seemingly invisible, default racial category to instead consider whiteness as a complex identity and basis of structural privilege and neocolonial dominance. Predominantly autobiographical and strictly theoretical work has been augmented by sophisticated empirical studies from a variety of methodological traditions.
