For much of this century, respected social theorists predicted the death of religion as inevitable consequence of science, education, and modern economics. But they were wrong. Stark and Bainbridge set out to explain the survival of religion. Using information derived from numerous surveys, censuses, historical case studies, and ethnographic field expeditions, they chart the full sweep of contemporary religion from the traditional denominations to the most fervent cults. This wealth of information is located within a coherent theoretical framework that examines religion as a social response to human needs, both the general needs shared by all and the desires specific to those who are denied the economic rewards or prestige enjoyed by the privileged. By explaining the forms taken by religions today, Stark and Bainbridge allow us to understand its persistence in a secular age and its prospects for the future.","source":"Semantic Scholar","year":2023,"language":"en","subjects":["Sociology"],"doi":"10.1525/9780520341340","url":"https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/770ebc30430d94883ec16bc66bcfdd1044ca715e","is_open_access":true,"citations":783,"published_at":"","score":90.49000000000001},{"id":"doaj_https://doi.org/10.57027/eikasia.134.1286","title":"Epistemic artifacts and changing patterns of observation","authors":[{"name":"Heriberto Ramírez Luján"}],"abstract":"This paper explores how epistemic artifacts have transformed our understanding of scientific observation. It examines the historical evolution from basic instruments such as Mayan quadrants and Galileo’s telescope to today’s sophisticated electron microscopes. The study focuses on how these devices have reshaped the traditional concept of observation in the philosophy of science, particularly within the field of nanotechnology. Against the backdrop of historical figures such as Descartes, Hooke, Newton, and Leeuwenhoek, it highlights how each contributed to the development of the «microscopic artifactual tradition». The paper introduces the concept of nanoepistemology to describe how knowledge of the nano-world fundamentally depends on instrument-processed images rather than traditional direct observation. It concludes that these technological transformations have weakened the role of classical theories and have shifted the philosophy of science toward a philosophy of technology.","source":"DOAJ","year":2026,"language":"","subjects":["Philosophy (General)"],"doi":"https://doi.org/10.57027/eikasia.134.1286","url":"https://www.revistadefilosofia.org/index.php/ERF/article/view/1286","is_open_access":true,"published_at":"","score":70},{"id":"doaj_10.24158/fik.2026.2.28","title":"Флорентийская мозаика в современной исламской архитектуре ХХI в. Заключается, что применение данной дорогостоящей техники в исламской архитектуре стало средством подчеркнуть статус Объединенных Арабских Эмиратов в исламском мире, а также подчеркнуть открытость страны для культурного диалога.","source":"DOAJ","year":2026,"language":"","subjects":["Philosophy (General)","History (General)"],"doi":"10.24158/fik.2026.2.28","url":"https://dom-hors.ru/nauchniy-zhurnal-obschestvo-filosofiya-istoriya-kultura/2026/2/28","is_open_access":true,"published_at":"","score":70},{"id":"arxiv_2601.11436","title":"An Epidemiological Modeling Take on Religion Dynamics","authors":[{"name":"Bilge Taskin"},{"name":"Teddy Lazebnik"}],"abstract":"Religions are among the most consequential social institutions, shaping collective identities, moral norms, and political organization across societies and historical periods. Nevertheless, despite extensive scholarship describing conversion, competition, and secularization, there is still no widely adopted formal model that captures religious dynamics over time within a unified, mechanistic framework. In this study, we propose an epidemiologically grounded model of religious change in which religions spread and compete analogously to co-circulating strains. The model extends multi-strain compartmental dynamics by distinguishing passive believers, active missionaries, and religious elites, and by incorporating demographic turnover and mutation-like splitting that endogenously generates new denominations. Using computer simulations, we show that the same mechanism reproduces canonical qualitative regimes, including emergence from rarity, rapid expansion, long-run coexistence, and transient rise-and-fall movements. A reduced calibration variant fits historical affiliation trajectories with parsimonious regime shifts in effective recruitment and disaffiliation, yielding interpretable signatures of changing social conditions. Finally, sensitivity analyses map sharp regime boundaries in parameter space, indicating that modest shifts in recruitment efficacy or retention among active spreaders can qualitatively alter long-run religious landscapes. These results establish a general, interpretable framework for studying religion as a dynamical diffusion process and provide a tool for comparative inference and counterfactual analysis in sociological research.","source":"arXiv","year":2026,"language":"en","subjects":["physics.soc-ph"],"url":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2601.11436","pdf_url":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2601.11436","is_open_access":true,"published_at":"2026-01-16T16:55:56Z","score":70},{"id":"doaj_10.3998/ergo.8584","title":"Paths to Diversity: A Simulation of Conformity in Environments with Different Geometries","authors":[{"name":"Matteo Colombo"},{"name":"Michael Cohen"}],"abstract":"The geometry of the environment can affect numerous psychological, social, and ecological processes. Here we use agent-based modeling to explore how environments with different geometric shapes can influence social learning to produce variations in the extent of universally shared descriptive norms. Previous work has shown that LLMs display biases in emotion attribution along gender lines. However, unlike gender, which says little about our values, religion, as a socio-cultural system, prescribes a set of beliefs and values for its followers. Religions, therefore, cultivate certain emotions. Moreover, these rules are explicitly laid out and interpreted by religious leaders. Using emotion attribution, we explore how different religions are represented in LLMs. We find that: Major religions in the US and European countries are represented with more nuance, displaying a more shaded model of their beliefs. Eastern religions like Hinduism and Buddhism are strongly stereotyped. Judaism and Islam are stigmatized -- the models' refusal skyrocket. We ascribe these to cultural bias in LLMs and the scarcity of NLP literature on religion. In the rare instances where religion is discussed, it is often in the context of toxic language, perpetuating the perception of these religions as inherently toxic. This finding underscores the urgent need to address and rectify these biases. Our research underscores the crucial role emotions play in our lives and how our values influence them.","source":"arXiv","year":2024,"language":"en","subjects":["cs.CL","cs.CY"],"url":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2407.06908","pdf_url":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2407.06908","is_open_access":true,"published_at":"2024-07-09T14:45:15Z","score":68},{"id":"ss_06e364f5ec46b04bae97992f512814364bdd6f95","title":"Religion and Advanced Industrial Society","authors":[{"name":"J. This is a glaring omission in the business and society and business ethics literatures. As a source of moral norms and beliefs, religion has historically played a significant role in the vast majority of societies and continues to remain relevant in almost every society. More broadly, expectations for responsible business behavior are informed by regional, national, or indigenous cultures, which in many parts of the world are heavily influenced by religious belief systems and religious institutions. In this essay, we discuss examples of how religion has functioned as a macro social force affecting business and society, discuss some of the key questions and issues related to research in this domain, offer some observations about why religion may be problematic with regard to its effects on business, and conclude by summarizing the articles contained in the special issue.","source":"Semantic Scholar","year":2020,"language":"en","subjects":["Sociology"],"doi":"10.1177/0007650319845097","url":"https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/1b06a16d4776995267758f4372d523b7647a9735","pdf_url":"https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/0007650319845097","is_open_access":true,"citations":118,"published_at":"","score":67.53999999999999},{"id":"ss_ea38a2a0b91a9171c9c7b92e5f5f196b8b6d6048","title":"The Thing about Religion: An Introduction to the Material Study of Religions","authors":[{"name":"Anna B. METHOD Searches were conducted in PsycINFO, PsycARTICLES, Medline databases, and through personal communication with study authors covering a period from 1975 (from the earliest identified study meeting our criteria) to 2015. Studies that took an empirical approach to studying the impact of disasters on R/S phenomena, as well as the relationship between R/S phenomena, cognition, behavior, and well-being in disaster contexts were included. RESULTS A total of 51 articles met the inclusion criteria. We organized the empirical findings under five main categories, which emerged from sorting studies by their primary R/S focus: (a) general religiousness, (b) God representations, (c) religious appraisals, (d) R/S meaning making, and (e) religious coping. On the whole, R/S appears to generally lead to positive outcomes among disaster survivors. Results suggest positive benefits of R/S comes more from how one engages faith and access to resources via R/S communities. This study aimed to investigate the following: (1) whether healthcare workers in general hospitals experience higher mental distress than those in psychiatric hospitals; (2) the role played by religion and alexithymic trait in influencing the mental health condition and perceived level of happiness of healthcare workers amidst the stress of the COVID-19 pandemic; and (3) factors that influence the resilience of healthcare workers at 6 weeks' follow-up. Methods: Four-hundred and fifty-eight healthcare workers were recruited from general and psychiatric hospitals, and 419 were followed-up after 6 weeks. All participants filled out the 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale, five-item Brief-Symptom Rating Scale, and the Chinese Oxford Happiness Questionnaire. Results: Under the stress of the COVID-19 pandemic, 12.3% of frontline healthcare workers in general hospitals reported having mental distress and perceived lower social adaptation status compared with those working in psychiatric hospitals. Christians/Catholics perceived better psychological well-being, and Buddhists/Taoists were less likely to experience mental distress. The results at 6 weeks of follow-up showed that the perceived lower social adaptation status of general hospital healthcare workers was temporary and improved with time. Christian/Catholic religion and time had independent positive effects on psychological well-being; however, the interaction of Christian/Catholic religion and time had a negative effect. Conclusions: Collectivism and individualism in the cultural context are discussed with regard to alexithymic trait and Buddhist/Taoist and Christian/Catholic religious faiths. Impacting the developed and developing world including Indonesia. It has transformed social, economic and political practices social life, everyday habits and government policies, with multi-dimensional consequences on human life. The present study endeavours to explore the relationship between religiosity, social capital, and psychological well-being of the general public, particularly in terms of coping with the pandemic. In addition to this, the study aims to highlight the importance of public awareness regarding social distancing, use of religion as a coping mechanism, and living a healthy lifestyle during pandemic. For knowing the perception of the masses, an online survey by using a self-administered questionnaire was carried out among coronavirus patients, the general public, social media activists, students, and professionals across Indonesia. The findings indicate that the pandemic has altered the lifestyle of the masses in different ways and that people have varied perceptions towards this virus regarding its spread and preventive measures. The study also reveals that, social capital (β = .418, p \u003c .001), psychological well-being (β = .343, p \u003c .001), and religious coping (β = .145, p \u003c. 01) have a significant amount of the variance of coronavirus situational stress (F = 69.77, p \u003c .001, R2 = 0.485). The conducted research is aimed at identifying the methodological foundations, content, methods and mechanisms for organizing the patriotic education in adolescents and \"Z generation\" youth. The article defines the essential characteristics of the education processes and creation of juvenile media, and substantiates the possibility and potential of integrating these processes. Theoretical analysis. The scientific novelty lies in the development and theoretical justification of the Model of organizing the patriotic education in the “Generation Z” youth with the involvement of the juvnile media resource, which includes methodological, target-oriented, activity and result blocks, and which is based on a combination of humanistic, personal, activity, and integrative approaches to the process of educating adolescents, allowing to ensure the integrity and functionality of the Model. The mechanism of education is the pedagogical support of the value-semantic self-determination of a young person at each stage of a young media journalist work on media material. In the process of creating media material, a chain of upbringing methods is used (according to Z. I. Vasilyeva): goal-setting – informational and educational – evaluative. Conclusion. As a result of the study, the possibility of using the potential of juvenile media in the process of patriotic education in generation Z teenagers is substantiated: the purpose, the main mechanism, the content and methods of the upbringing process, the structure and indicators of the result of the patriotic upbringing of adolescents and the \"Generation Z\" youth with the involvement of the juvenile media resource.","source":"DOAJ","year":2022,"language":"","subjects":["Philosophy (General)"],"doi":"10.18500/1819-7671-2022-22-3-339-344","url":"https://phpp.sgu.ru/sites/phpp.sgu.ru/files/2022/09/filosofiya_2022_3_339-344.pdf","pdf_url":"https://phpp.sgu.ru/sites/phpp.sgu.ru/files/2022/09/filosofiya_2022_3_339-344.pdf","is_open_access":true,"published_at":"","score":66},{"id":"doaj_10.3390/philosophies7010019","title":"Voice Syncretism Crosslinguistically: The View from Minimalism","authors":[{"name":"Despina Oikonomou"},{"name":"Artemis Alexiadou"}],"abstract":"Voice syncretism is widely attested crosslinguistically. We show that, in all cases under investigation, allosemy is closely associated with the existence of idiosyncratic patterns. By contrast, we notice that allosemy and idiosyncrasy are not present in analytic passive and causative constructions across different languages.
