Although the scientific and cultural dimensions of this \"Mars excitement\" have been well studied in metropolitan contexts, far less attention has been paid to how planetary astronomy circulated through colonial press systems. This paper examines the Australian press as a case study in the global mediation of nineteenth-century astronomical knowledge. Drawing on a structured compilation of 1040 digitised newspaper articles accessed via the National Library of Australia, the study analyses patterns of first appearance, reprinting, attribution and temporal persistence in Australian Mars reporting. Mars-related news entered Australia primarily through international telegraphic networks and overseas syndication before circulating widely through metropolitan, regional and provincial newspapers. Distinguishing between novel reports and subsequent reprints reveals that apparent abundance often masked a small number of originating items that achieved extensive colonial reach. Attribution practices evolved over time, shifting from anonymous or institutional authority towards increasing reliance on named overseas figures such as Asaph Hall, William H. Pickering and, most notably, Percival Lowell. This shift reshaped both the form and longevity of Mars reporting, allowing interpretive and personality-driven material to persist independently of specific observational events. By emphasising circulation, attribution and temporal rhythm, this study situates Australian newspapers within international systems of scientific communication. Colonial journalism actively mediated astronomical knowledge rather than merely transmitting it, shaping how Mars became a durable object of public scientific attention in the late nineteenth century.","source":"arXiv","year":2026,"language":"en","subjects":["physics.hist-ph"],"url":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2603.22905","pdf_url":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2603.22905","is_open_access":true,"published_at":"2026-03-24T07:52:17Z","score":70},{"id":"arxiv_2603.23563","title":"Mars in the Australian Press, 1875-1899. 1. I examine how Mars was interpreted in Australian newspapers between the 1870s and 1899, focusing on the ways in which astronomical knowledge was framed, contextualised and debated within a colonial media environment. Drawing on a large collection of digitised newspaper articles, I analyse how observational authority, instrumental credibility and individual expertise were harnessed in press reporting. The paper situates Australian Mars coverage within a global network of scientific communication dominated by metropolitan centres in Europe and North America, while highlighting the distinctive role played by southern-hemisphere visibility. Australian observatories and observers were frequently positioned as contributors of confirmatory observation rather than interpretive leadership, reinforcing a pattern of locally grounded but internationally oriented scientific engagement. The analysis traces a shift from early emphasis on disciplined observation and measurement to later periods characterised by contested interpretations, particularly surrounding the so-called Martian \"canals\" and the speculative claims advanced by personalities such as Percival Lowell in the USA. By examining how newspapers mediated between observational astronomy, engineering analogies and popular imagination, this study contributes to a broader understanding of how planetary science entered public discourse beyond metropolitan centres. In doing so, it underscores the active role of colonial newspapers in shaping scientific meaning and situates Australian Mars reporting within the wider history of nineteenth-century astronomical culture.","source":"arXiv","year":2026,"language":"en","subjects":["physics.hist-ph","astro-ph.EP"],"url":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2603.23563","pdf_url":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2603.23563","is_open_access":true,"published_at":"2026-03-24T07:52:12Z","score":70},{"id":"doaj_10.4467/22996362PZ.25.040.22223","title":"\n Sprawozdanie z XVI ogólnopolskiej konferencji naukowej z cyklu „Współczesne Media”. Four explanatory factors, news app users’ demographics, news media usage, perceptions, and motivations, are proposed to predict adoption intention. By surveying 698 mobile news app users in the US, this study’s findings indicate that user perceptions of news apps (i.e., perceived ease of use, compatibility, relative content advantage, and observability) and instrumental motivations of news consumption (i.e., information-seeking and opinion needs) best predict news consumers’ willingness to continue using mobile news apps. Although the algorithmic technologies associated with automated journalism remain in the initial stage of development, early adopters have already praised the usefulness of automated journalism for generating routine news based on clean, structured data. Most noticeably, the Associated Press and The New York Times have been automating news content to cover financial and sports issues for over a decade. Nevertheless, research on automated journalism is also alerting to the dangers of using algorithms for news creation and distribution, including the possible bias behind AI systems or the human bias of those who develop computer programs. The popularization of automated news content also has important implications for the infrastructure of the newsroom, the role performance of journalists and other non-journalistic professionals, and the distribution of news content to a datafied audience.","source":"arXiv","year":2024,"language":"en","subjects":["cs.CY"],"url":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2409.03462","pdf_url":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2409.03462","is_open_access":true,"published_at":"2024-09-05T12:19:03Z","score":68},{"id":"arxiv_2408.04386","title":"Reflections on Teaching Data Storytelling at the Journalism School","authors":[{"name":"Xingyu Lan"}],"abstract":"The integration of data visualization in journalism has catalyzed the growth of data storytelling in recent years. Today, it is increasingly common for journalism schools to incorporate data visualization into their curricula. However, the approach to teaching data visualization in journalism schools can diverge significantly from that in computer science or design schools, influenced by the varied backgrounds of students and the distinct value systems inherent to these disciplines. This paper reviews my experience and reflections on teaching data-driven storytelling in a journalism school in Shanghai, China. To begin with, I discuss three prominent characteristics of journalism education (i.e., students' lack of quantitative literacy, the tension between humanism and technocentrism, and the high requirements for content professionalism) that pose challenges for course design and teaching. Then, for each challenge, I share firsthand teaching experiences and discuss corresponding approaches for teaching, such as trying to put visualization into a news context and finding commonality between data-driven storytelling and traditional storytelling. Overall, this paper aims to provide reference and inspiration for instructors who are teaching data visualization and data-driven storytelling to students with non-technical backgrounds.","source":"arXiv","year":2024,"language":"en","subjects":["cs.HC"],"url":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2408.04386","pdf_url":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2408.04386","is_open_access":true,"published_at":"2024-08-08T11:43:00Z","score":68},{"id":"arxiv_2401.14816","title":"Unleashing Data Journalism's Potential: COVID-19 as Catalyst for Newsroom Transformation","authors":[{"name":"Benedict Witzenberger"},{"name":"Jürgen Pfeffer"}],"abstract":"In the context of journalism, the COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented challenges, necessitating rapid adaptations in newsrooms. Data journalism emerged as a pivotal approach for effectively conveying complex information to the public. Here, we show the profound impact of COVID-19 on data journalism, revealing a surge in data-driven publications and heightened collaboration between data and science journalists. Employing a quantitative methodology, including negative binomial regression and Relational hyperevent models (RHEM), on byline data of articles co-authored by data journalists, we comprehensively analyze data journalism outputs, authorship trends, and collaboration networks to address five key research questions. The findings reveal a significant increase in data journalistic pieces during and after the pandemic, in particular with a rise in publications within scientific departments. Collaborative efforts among data and science journalists intensified, evident through increased authorship and co-authorship trends. Prior common authorship experiences somewhat influenced the likelihood of future co-authorships, underscoring the importance of building collaborative communities of practice. The existence of centralized platforms such as EurekAlert! allows press releases to be disseminated online as independent news articles. Press releases can include additional material (e.g., interviews, commentaries, explanatory tables, figures, media, recommended readings), which turn them into online objects with analytical value of their own. The objective of this work is to illustrate how press releases can be quantitatively analyzed applying similar tools and approaches as those applied in scientometric research (SCI). To achieve this goal, a scientometric inspired analytical framework is proposed based on the formulation of spaces of interaction of objects, actors, and impacts. As such, the framework proposed considers press releases as science communication (SCO) objects, produced by different SCO actors (e.g., journalists), and the subject of receiving impact (e.g., tweets, links). To carry out this analysis, all press releases published by EurekAlert! from 1996 until 2021 (455,703 press releases), all tweets including at least one URL referring to a EurekAlert! press release (1,364,563 tweets), and all webpages with at least one URL referring to a EurekAlert! press release (54,089,233 webpages) have been studied. Given these points, this paper evaluates eight cross-country instruments on press freedom in 146 countries between 2001 and 2020, replicating an earlier study with a comparable research setup. However, the evidence revealing the crisis is often anecdotal or limited in scope. In this unprecedented longitudinal research, we draw on data from the Australian journalism jobs market from January 2012 until March 2020. Using Data Science and Machine Learning techniques, we analyse two distinct data sets: job advertisements (ads) data comprising 3,698 journalist job ads from a corpus of over 8 million Australian job ads; and official employment data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Having matched and analysed both sources, we address both the demand for and supply of journalists in Australia over this critical period. The data show that the crisis is real, but there are also surprises. Counter-intuitively, the number of journalism job ads in Australia rose from 2012 until 2016, before falling into decline. Less surprisingly, for the entire period studied the figures reveal extreme volatility, characterised by large and erratic fluctuations. The data also clearly show that COVID-19 has significantly worsened the crisis. We then tease out more granular findings, including: that there are now more women than men journalists in Australia, but that gender inequity is worsening, with women journalists getting younger and worse-paid just as men journalists are, on average, getting older and better-paid; that, despite the crisis besetting the industry, the demand for journalism skills has increased; and that, perhaps concerningly, the skills sought by journalism job ads increasingly include social media and generalist communications.","source":"arXiv","year":2020,"language":"en","subjects":["econ.GN"],"doi":"10.1177/1464884921996286","url":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2008.12459","pdf_url":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2008.12459","is_open_access":true,"published_at":"2020-08-28T03:20:48Z","score":64},{"id":"arxiv_1907.03518","title":"Publication modalities 'article in press' and 'open access' in relation to journal average citation","authors":[{"name":"Sara M. 'article in press' or early view, which allows access to the accepted paper before its formal publication in an issue; 2. 'open access', which allows readers to obtain it freely and free of charge. This paper studies the influence of both publication modalities on the average impact of the journal and its evolution over time. It tries to identify the separate effect of access on citation into two major parts: early view and selection effect, managing to provide some evidence of the positive effect of both. Scopus is used as the database and CiteScore as the measure of journal impact. The prevalence of both publication modalities is quantified. Differences in the average impact factor of group of journals, according to their publication modalities, are tested. The evolution over time of the citation influence, from 2011 to 2016, is also analysed. Finally, a linear regression to explain the correlation of these publication practices with the CiteScore in 2016, in a ceteris paribus context, is estimated. Our main findings show evidence of a positive correlation between average journal impact and advancing the publication of accepted articles, moreover this correlation increases over time. The open access modality, in a ceteris paribus context, also correlates positively with average journal impact.","source":"arXiv","year":2019,"language":"en","subjects":["cs.DL","stat.AP"],"doi":"10.1007/s11192-019-03156-2","url":"https://arxiv.org/abs/1907.03518","pdf_url":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/1907.03518","is_open_access":true,"published_at":"2019-07-08T11:19:53Z","score":63}],"total":802088,"page":1,"page_size":20,"sources":["CrossRef","DOAJ","arXiv"],"query":"Journalism.
