Because psychological data are dominated by samples drawn from Western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic (WEIRD) nations, and overwhelmingly, the United States, we focused on distance from the United States. We also present distance from China, the country with the largest population and second largest economy, which is a common cultural comparison. We applied the fixation index (FST), a meaningful statistic in evolutionary theory, to the World Values Survey of cultural beliefs and behaviors. As the extreme WEIRDness of the literature begins to dissolve, our tool will become more useful for designing, planning, and justifying a wide range of comparative psychological projects. Our code and accompanying online application allow for comparisons between any two countries. Analyses of regional diversity reveal the relative homogeneity of the United States. Cultural distance predicts various psychological outcomes.","source":"Semantic Scholar","year":2020,"language":"en","subjects":["Medicine","Psychology"],"doi":"10.1177/0956797620916782","url":"https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/e69d62b4ab9a8f6cba38b9db1a279173bf6cacd7","pdf_url":"https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/0956797620916782","is_open_access":true,"citations":513,"published_at":"","score":79.39},{"id":"ss_d8309ee10961976ca90abdd7e28f7ed169069296","title":"Pandemics: Implications for research and practice in industrial and organizational psychology","authors":[{"name":"C. With COVID-19 presenting as a global pandemic, there is much speculation about the implications of this crisis for the future of work and for people working in organizations. In this article, we discuss 10 of the most relevant research and practice topics in the field of industrial and organizational psychology that will likely be strongly influenced by COVID-19. For each of these topics, the pandemic crisis is creating new work-related challenges, but it is also presenting various opportunities. The topics discussed herein include occupational health and safety, work–family issues, telecommuting, virtual teamwork, job insecurity, precarious work, leadership, human resources policy, the aging workforce, and careers. This article sets the stage for further discussion of various ways in which I-O psychology research and practice can address the issues that COVID-19 creates for work and organizational processes that are affecting workers now and will shape the future of work and organizations in both the short and long term. This article concludes by inviting I-O psychology researchers and practitioners to address the challenges and opportunities of COVID-19 head-on by proactively adapting the work that we do in support of workers, organizations, and society as a whole.","source":"Semantic Scholar","year":2020,"language":"en","subjects":["Sociology"],"doi":"10.1017/iop.2020.48","url":"https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/d8309ee10961976ca90abdd7e28f7ed169069296","pdf_url":"https://kops.uni-konstanz.de/bitstreams/531f6616-3953-42fc-804a-25b6dc668d91/download","is_open_access":true,"citations":438,"published_at":"","score":77.14},{"id":"ss_6f74c10e92ae8434b48c1e24a346d75cfd6801ab","title":"Environmental sustainability at work: It’s time to unleash the full potential of industrial and organizational psychology","authors":[{"name":"Clara Kühner"},{"name":"J. This includes the behavior of individuals at work and within organizations. Industrial and organizational (I-O) psychology is uniquely positioned to provide evidence-based recommendations for changing organizational decision-making and behavior toward greater environmental sustainability. Although a substantial body of research on this topic has emerged over the past decade, the discipline has yet to realize its full potential because the topic is currently not prioritized and the practical and societal impact of previous research is limited. This article aims to propel research on environmental sustainability at work forward. To do so, it (a) outlines the interconnections between organizations and environmental sustainability; (b) portrays previous research efforts on environmental sustainability at work, resulting in an integrative conceptual framework across micro, meso, macro, and magno levels; and (c) provides actionable recommendations for high-impact future I-O psychology research and practice related to environmental sustainability. Following an “impact-first” rationale, we identified 10 areas for future research across the four levels of the conceptual framework. For each area, we present relevant theoretical perspectives, methodological approaches, and connections to related disciplines. Finally, we provide suggestions for effective science–practice transfer. Overall, the article seeks to spark discussion on this crucial topic within the community and to inspire I-O psychology researchers and practitioners to contribute to environmental sustainability.","source":"Semantic Scholar","year":2025,"language":"en","subjects":null,"doi":"10.1017/iop.2025.10015","url":"https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/6f74c10e92ae8434b48c1e24a346d75cfd6801ab","is_open_access":true,"citations":15,"published_at":"","score":69.45},{"id":"doaj_10.4103/ipj.ipj_155_24","title":"Health technology assessment in mental health services","authors":[{"name":"Narendra Javadekar"},{"name":"Archana Javadekar"},{"name":"Deepa Thakur"}],"abstract":"Mental illnesses have a significant impact on the lives of people not only because of their morbidity but also because of their noticeable impact on economic wellbeing. Out-of-pocket expenditure for mental healthcare services is significant in India and may even lead to impoverishment of the families. The present paper states that Health Technology Assessment (HTA) is necessary for mental healthcare primarily because of its rising cost and competing interests in government decisions and prioritization. HTA does a systematic evaluation of the consequences of using health technology. HTA will provide information to decision makers to develop and implement safer, cost-effective, and efficient policies at the individual and government levels. Appropriate guidance regarding the cost-effectiveness of mental health interventions will help to serve the purpose of providing transparent reports in the context of limited budgets.","source":"DOAJ","year":2024,"language":"","subjects":["Psychiatry","Industrial psychology"],"doi":"10.4103/ipj.ipj_155_24","url":"https://journals.lww.com/10.4103/ipj.ipj_155_24","is_open_access":true,"published_at":"","score":68},{"id":"doaj_10.3390/bs14100928","title":"How Does Parental Early Maladaptive Schema Affect Adolescents’ Social Adaptation? Previous studies have shown that early maladaptive schemas may be intergenerationally transmitted in families. It is important to explore the intergenerational effect of early maladaptive schemas on adolescents’ social adaptation, as they are in a critical period of growth and development. In this study, a cross-sectional design and questionnaire survey were used to collect data to explore the intergenerational influence of early maladaptive schemas in families and their relationship with adolescents’ social adaptation. The participants were 201 adolescents aged 12 to 16 years and their primary caregivers (father or mother), of whom 125 (62.2%) were boys and 76 (37.8%) were girls. There were 70 fathers (34.8%) and 131 mothers (65.2%). Chinese adolescents and their primary caregivers were surveyed using paired questionnaires, and the Young Schema Questionnaire (short form) and Adolescent Social Adaptation Scale were completed. The results show that adolescents’ early maladaptive schema plays an intermediary role between parents’ early maladaptive schema and adolescents’ social adaptation. Parental mistrust/abuse and insufficient self-control schemas affected adolescents’ social adaptation through the mediating effect of their corresponding schemas. Our results reveal the negative impact path of parents’ early maladaptive schemas on adolescents’ social adaptation and provide a new direction for the clinical practice of adolescent family therapy.","source":"DOAJ","year":2024,"language":"","subjects":["Psychology"],"doi":"10.3390/bs14100928","url":"https://www.mdpi.com/2076-328X/14/10/928","is_open_access":true,"published_at":"","score":68},{"id":"doaj_Impact+of+Environmental+Uncertainty+on+Depression+and+Anxiety+Among+Chinese+Workers%3A+A+Moderated+Mediation+Model","title":"Impact of Environmental Uncertainty on Depression and Anxiety Among Chinese Workers: A Moderated Mediation Model","authors":[{"name":"Ma C"},{"name":"Zhang W"},{"name":"Da S"},{"name":"Zhang H"},{"name":"Zhang X"}],"abstract":"Chenlu Ma,1 Wen Zhang,1 Shu Da,2 Huan Zhang,3 Xichao Zhang1 1Faculty of Psychology, Beijing Normal University, Beijing, 100875, People’s Republic of China; 2School of Psychology, Nanjing Normal University, Nanjing, 210024, People’s Republic of China; 3Academy of Global Innovation \u0026 Governance, University of International Business and Economics, Beijing, 100029, People’s Republic of ChinaCorrespondence: Xichao Zhang, Faculty of Psychology, Beijing Normal University, No. 19 XinJieKouWai Street, HaiDian District, Beijing, 100875, People’s Republic of China, Email xchzhang@bnu.edu.cnPurpose: Environmental uncertainty has reached unprecedented levels in recent years. While there is substantial knowledge about the connection between environmental uncertainty and organizational outcomes, limited attention has been devoted to investigating its impact on employees’ depression and anxiety symptoms. Grounded in job demands-resources theory, this study aims to explore the relationship between environmental uncertainty and employees’ depression and anxiety symptoms, and it further investigates the mediating role of work pressure and the moderating role of union practices.Methods: In September 2022, we undertook a cross-sectional survey study, gathering data from 1081 employees across various enterprises situated in Liaoning, China. Throughout this timeframe, notable global occurrences heightened the awareness of environmental uncertainty. Following the exclusion of participants who did not provide information on the main variables, the final valid sample comprised 940 employees. To test all hypotheses, a series of confirmatory factor analyses and path-analytic procedures were conducted using Mplus 7.0.Results: Our results confirm that environmental uncertainty, as a high job demand, increases employees’ work pressure, thereby elevating rates of anxiety and depression; the indirect relationship between environmental uncertainty and employees’ anxiety and depression through work pressure is stronger when union practices are lower.Conclusion: Our findings indicate the detrimental impact of environmental uncertainty on employees’ mental health, and highlight the roles of work pressure and union practices. In light of this, organizations should take steps to mitigate employees’ perceptions of environmental uncertainty and establish mental health programs, in cooperation with union practices, to protect employees’ mental well-being.Keywords: environmental uncertainty, anxiety, depression, union practices, work pressure","source":"DOAJ","year":2024,"language":"","subjects":["Psychology","Industrial psychology"],"url":"https://www.dovepress.com/impact-of-environmental-uncertainty-on-depression-and-anxiety-among-ch-peer-reviewed-fulltext-article-PRBM","is_open_access":true,"published_at":"","score":68},{"id":"doaj_10.4103/ipj.ipj_157_23","title":"Machine minds: Artificial intelligence in psychiatry","authors":[{"name":"Markanday Sharma"},{"name":"Prateek Yadav"},{"name":"Srikrishna P. However, these opinions have crystallized without the benefit of any appreciable empirical data, until now. This study investigates the applicability of the ethical principles and standards of the code to 398 first-person narratives of ethical incidents reported by industrial-organizational (I-O) psychologists. On average, 2.8 (of the 5) principles enumerated in the code were deemed applicable to each incident, and each principle was applicable to more than half the incidents provided. Of the code’s 89 ethical standards, 75 (84.3%) were applicable to at least one incident. Among the 10 categories of standards, resolving ethical issues and human relations were the most frequently applicable, whereas therapy standards were virtually never applicable. However, for 42.7% of the incidents, trained judges identified a substantive deficiency or ambiguity for I-O psychologists in the code. These deficiencies were subsequently grouped into seven higher order categories (assessments in organizations; research practices; data management; professional interactions; business practices; student ethics; and proactive ethical behavior). Recommendations are offered for improving those putative deficiencies, and implications are discussed for I-O psychologists, the APA’s Ethics Code Task Force (ECTF), and other nonclinical domains of psychology.","source":"Semantic Scholar","year":2023,"language":"en","subjects":null,"doi":"10.1017/iop.2022.112","url":"https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/068007eefe2be951a1dd98075cd0746c674648af","pdf_url":"https://www.cambridge.org/core/services/aop-cambridge-core/content/view/B752A8D093D927F70BDDA34D9220EA56/S1754942622001122a.pdf/div-class-title-how-relevant-is-the-apa-ethics-code-to-industrial-organizational-psychology-applicability-deficiencies-and-recommendations-div.pdf","is_open_access":true,"citations":10,"published_at":"","score":67.3},{"id":"doaj_10.24260/aktiva.v1i1.1025","title":"Pengaruh Etika Profesi dan Fee Audit Terhadap Kualitas Audit","authors":[{"name":"Sabirin Sabirin"},{"name":"Aulia Azimi"},{"name":"Harry Wahyudi"}],"abstract":"Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh etika profesi auditor dan fee audit terhadap kualitas audit.\nDesain / metodologi / pendekatan: dalam penelitian ini dilakukan analisis statistik deskriptif dengan pendekatan kuantitatif yang menggunakan teknik analisis regresi linear berganda dengan alat analisis SPSS 24.\nTemuan Penelitian: Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa etika profesi dan fee audit memiliki pengaruh terhadap kualitas audit.\nKontribusi Teoretis / Orisinalitas: Perbedaan penelitian ini dengan penelitian sebelumnya adalah pada teknik analisis yang digunakan, selain itu objek penelitian juga berbeda, pada penelitian ini yang menjadi objek penelitian adalah Kantor Akuntan Publik yang berada di Kota Pontianak dan Bandung dan struktur bisnis yang kompleks sehingga menjadikan penelitian layak untuk diteruskan. The quality of the treatment environment demonstrated a negative correlation between religious coping (p \u003c 0.02) and behavioral disengagement (p \u003c 0.01), whereas it showed a positive correlation with active coping (p \u003c 0.03) and planning (p \u003c 0.02). The linear regression analysis demonstrated that treatment tolerability significantly increased with positive reframing (R2 = 0.118, F(304) = 2.22, p \u003c 0.03). Behavioral disengagement significantly decreased with better treatment environment (R2 = 0.111, F(304) = 2.09, p \u003c 0.02).Discussion: We discussed the findings keeping in view the role of social, cultural, and economic factors related to infertility care in the context South-Asian culture, and recommendations are made to promote women’s mental health and coping by improving some specific aspects of infertility treatment quality.Conclusions: High treatment tolerability may associate with some useful aspects of emotion-focus coping, such as positive reframing, whereas low treatment tolerability may associate with avoidance coping, such as behavioral disengagement and venting. Consequently, we know very little about ethical situations actually faced by I-O psychologists. This article presents and tests a structural perspective on understanding the nature of ethical dilemmas that can facilitate such study. A taxonomy of five paradigmatic forms of ethical dilemmas is defined and placed in a theoretical context. Narrative descriptions of 292 ethical situations were obtained from a sample of 228 professional members of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) in the United States and were used to empirically test the taxonomy. The narratives were content analyzed for form of dilemma, work domain of occurrence, relevance to human resource administration concerns, and favorability of the situation’s resolution. The work domains that were most problematic were academic research/publication activities, individual assessment/assessment centers, consulting issues regarding the client, and academic supervising/mentoring. There were no significant differences as a function of respondents’ sex, seniority, or professional membership status (member/fellow). This relatively “content free” structural aspect of ethical dilemmas enables comparisons across different domains (of professions, organizations, demographic groups, age cohorts, etc.) in which the overt idiosyncratic ethical problems experienced are not commensurable. Similarly, it can yield interpretable longitudinal comparisons despite changes in the manifestations of ethical problems encountered over time.","source":"Semantic Scholar","year":2021,"language":"en","subjects":null,"doi":"10.1017/iop.2021.65","url":"https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/f9a48d7f1e15876b5081cb22752223e595e2d3c6","is_open_access":true,"citations":23,"published_at":"","score":65.69},{"id":"ss_14ab773978f2255605adfe9b3c13dca78236afed","title":"Activity: A Fruitful Concept in Industrial Psychology","authors":[{"name":"W. Nurses often face huge psychological pressure as a result of workload, long hours, and working in a high-risk environment. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and associated factors of anxiety, depression, and stress among nurses working in northwest Amhara referral hospitals.Methods: Institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted from 25th September to 20th October 2020. A total of 302 nurses were selected using a simple random sampling technique. A structured pretested self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data. The data were entered into EpiData version 3 and analyzed using SPSS version 21. A binary logistic regression model was used to compute bivariable and multivariable analyses.Results: The prevalence of anxiety, depression, and stress among nurses was 69.6%, 55.3%, and 20.5%, respectively. Unavailability of a guideline, fear of infecting family, and having chronic diseases increase the risk of developing anxiety. Nurses who did not have a guideline, received negative feedback from families, had a history of mental disorders, and chronic diseases have a higher odds of depression. Working in the night shift, lack of training, fear of infecting family, negative feedback from families, presence of confirmed/suspected cases in the family, and having chronic diseases increase the risk of developing stress.Conclusion: More than two-thirds, more than half, and nearly one-fifth of the nurses had anxiety, depression, and stress, respectively. It is better to create awareness for the community, avail a guideline, train nurses, and give special attention to nurses with chronic disease and a history of mental disorders to minimize the psychological impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on nurses and protect their mental health. We developed an app that offers SCT by asking users to use their non-dominant hand for daily tasks, and aimed to examine whether participants that received SCT via app or e-mail, and received either one daily task or five tasks at once, improved more in self-control and decreased in aggression compared to each other and a control group. Methods: The design of this study was based on a pilot study in which a first version of the SCT app was developed and tested with students via a pretest-posttest design. Based on the outcomes of the pilot study, a 2 × 2 full factorial design (N = 204) with control group (n = 69) was used, with delivery via e-mail versus app and receiving one daily task versus five at once as factors. During four measuring points, self-control was assessed via the Brief Self-Control Scale (BSCS) and the Go/No-Go task, aggression was assessed using the Brief Aggression Questionnaire (BAQ). In the final questionnaire, open-ended questions were asked to gain insight into the app's points of improvement. Quantitative data were analysed using repeated measures linear mixed models, qualitative data were analysed via inductive coding. Results: While no interaction effects were found, analyses showed that only the BSCS-scores of participants that used the app significantly improved over time (F[3, 196.315] = 4.090, p = .008), no improvements were observed in the e-mail and control condition. No meaningful differences in aggression, the Go/No-Go task, and between the one- and five-task conditions and control groups were found. Qualitative data showed that while the opinions on SCT-tasks differed, participants were overall satisfied with the intervention, but wanted more reminders. Conclusions: The results of this study showed that an SCT app has the potential to bolster self-control. No convincing effects on aggression were found in this student sample, which might be explained by the relatively low levels of aggression in this target group. Consequently, the app should also be investigated in populations with aggression regulation problems. Future research might also focus on the use of SCT to improve other types of behaviour driven by self-control, such as physical activity or smoking. Finally, a more personalized version of the app, in which users can select the number and types of SCT-tasks, should be developed and evaluated.","source":"DOAJ","year":2021,"language":"","subjects":["Information technology","Psychology"],"doi":"10.1016/j.invent.2021.100392","url":"http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2214782921000324","is_open_access":true,"published_at":"","score":65},{"id":"ss_214830629490ea484cc65756f6a69b86364aeffd","title":"On reproducibility and replicability: Arguing for open science practices and methodological improvements at the South African Journal of Industrial Psychology","authors":[{"name":"Emir Efendić"},{"name":"L. Research methods and practices have come under increased scrutiny, with many issues identified as negatively contributing to low replicability and reproducibility of psychological research.Implications: As a consequence, researchers are increasingly called upon to overhaul and improve their research process. Various stakeholders within the scientific community are arguing for more openness and rigor within industrial and organisational (I-O) psychological research. A lack of transparency and openness further fuels criticisms as to the credibility and trustworthiness of I-O psychology which negatively affects the evidence-based practices which it supports. Furthermore, traditional gate-keepers such as grant agencies, professional societies and journals, are adapting their policies, reflecting an effort to curtail these trends.Purpose: The purpose of this opinion paper is, therefore, to stimulate an open dialogue with the South African Journal of Industrial Psychology (SAJIP) contributing authors, its editorial board and readership about the challenges associated with the replication crisis in psychology. Furthermore, it attempts to discuss how the identified issues affect I-O psychology and how these could be managed through open science practices and other structural improvements within the SAJIP.Recommendations: We enumerate several easily implementable open science practices, methodological improvements and editorial policy enhancements to enhance credibility and transparency within the SAJIP. Relying on these, we recommend changes to the current practices that can be taken up by researchers and the SAJIP to improve reproducibility and replicability in I-O psychological science.","source":"Semantic Scholar","year":2019,"language":"en","subjects":["Psychology"],"doi":"10.4102/SAJIP.V45I0.1607","url":"https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/214830629490ea484cc65756f6a69b86364aeffd","pdf_url":"https://sajip.co.za/index.php/sajip/article/download/1607/2424","is_open_access":true,"citations":22,"published_at":"","score":63.66},{"id":"ss_6f9ed4779bf3dac7c27b397641660d1f4a9a4177","title":"Inspiring Growth: A Counselling Framework for Industrial Psychology Practitioners","authors":[{"name":"L. Participants consisted of the project team who participated in a training institution’s CSR initiative in the North West province. Data gathering took place in the form of semi-structured in-depth interviews, which were transcribed verbatim and analysed using thematic analysis.Main findings: The results showed that typical IOP topics that could be formulated into a CSR programme included life skills and topics related to personal growth and self-worth. The results also showed that universities are able to play a vital part in community engagement, and an inter-relationship of benefits can be established.Practical/managerial implications: The research indicates that industrial and organisational psychologists could also contribute to organisations when they operate in the CSR scope.Contribution/value-add: On an individual level, this study contributed to clarify the understanding whether IOP has a place in social investment and contributions.","source":"Semantic Scholar","year":2019,"language":"en","subjects":["Sociology"],"doi":"10.4102/sajip.v45i0.1665","url":"https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/94403a3fb5c63a16017e4b7f70d7a34737751521","pdf_url":"https://sajip.co.za/index.php/sajip/article/download/1665/2544","is_open_access":true,"citations":4,"published_at":"","score":63.12}],"total":4856691,"page":1,"page_size":20,"sources":["DOAJ","CrossRef","Semantic Scholar"],"query":"Industrial psychology"}
