{"results":[{"id":"arxiv_2511.04211","title":"From data to corpus: semiotic and documentary issues in audiovisual archives","authors":[{"name":"Peter Stockinger"}],"abstract":"The article examines the theoretical, methodological, and technical foundations of research on audiovisual corpora within the field of digital humanities. It outlines the main transversal issues underlying the processes of constructing, exploiting, and interpreting such corpora, which are conceived as specific forms of textual data in the broad sense - that is, as sets of semiotic traces (written, visual, sound, or multimodal) that make it possible to document, analyze, and transmit domains of knowledge. The analysis is organized around five complementary themes. The first concerns the status and structure of textual data lato sensu: any data, regardless of its medium, participates in a meaningful representation of a domain and therefore requires a unified theoretical and methodological framework based on a transdisciplinary semiotic approach. The second theme addresses the documentary value of data and corpora, understood as the relevance of materials for documenting a research object in relation to the goals and perspectives of the projects in which they are used. This value depends both on provenance and reasoned selection, and on the pragmatic context of their use. The third theme distinguishes between data collections, corpora, and archives. A data collection constitutes a potential reservoir of materials, whereas a corpus results from a reasoned and contextualized selection from this collection, elaborated in relation to a specific project. Archives, in turn, refer both to open data repositories and to research resources that support experimentation, editorialization, and valorization. This distinction highlights the dynamic nature of the processes of constituting and reusing digital resources. The fourth theme explores the semantic enrichment of data, understood as the set of semiotic and technical operations that give meaning to data, establish relationships among them, and make them usable by social actors. This approach raises issues related to the description, classification, and interconnection of data, notably through the use of ontologies, metadata, and models for knowledge representation. Semantic enrichment thus forms part of a broader reflection on value creation and data reuse in diverse contexts. Finally, the fifth theme addresses the instrumentation of research, that is, the digital environments, tools, and infrastructures that support the production, management, and dissemination of corpora. These technical systems - collaborative platforms, annotation, analysis, and publication tools - form an essential component of the digital humanities ecosystem and condition new forms of archiving, circulation, and knowledge transmission. In conclusion, the article emphasizes three central questions: how to construct meaning from data; how to model strategies of appropriation, reuse, and re-publication; and how to organize new semiotic and cultural ecosystems of research. The overall challenge lies in understanding how audiovisual data can be transformed into genuine objects of knowledge and value within contemporary scientific, technical, and cultural frameworks.","source":"arXiv","year":2025,"language":"en","subjects":["cs.DL"],"url":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2511.04211","pdf_url":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2511.04211","is_open_access":true,"published_at":"2025-11-06T09:16:08Z","score":69},{"id":"arxiv_2503.21645","title":"Mapping the Digital Diplomatic Infrastructure: A Comparative Evaluation of Global Online Directories for Diplomatic Missions","authors":[{"name":"Sinisa Grgic"}],"abstract":"This study provides a comparative evaluation of global diplomatic mission directories. DiplomaticMonitor.org, EmbassyPages.com, and WikiData.org are strategically selected among the top ten global services. After analyzing nearly all available online global diplomatic directory services, these three platforms are selected as they represent fundamentally different approaches to creating worldwide diplomatic mission databases. Using official diplomatic lists from over 150 countries as benchmarks, we assessed data coverage, accuracy, and update frequency across these platforms. DiplomaticMonitor consistently outperforms its counterparts in structure, completeness, and timeliness, accurately reflecting ambassadorial appointment cycles and maintaining high precision across contact and personnel records. EmbassyPages, despite strong search engine visibility and widespread usage, exhibits significant data currency issues, with markedly diminished ambassadorial accuracy attributable to delayed refresh cycles. WikiData offers valuable historical documentation and open-source accessibility but lacks the consistency and verification protocols necessary for reliable real-time diplomatic information. Our findings highlight the critical challenge posed by the absence of a standardized global diplomatic mission registry. In this fragmented landscape, methodologically rigorous third-party platforms can occasionally surpass government-published records in quality and utility. The research demonstrates that in contemporary digital diplomacy, data reliability correlates less with institutional provenance than with disciplined, transparent, and consistent data stewardship practices.","source":"arXiv","year":2025,"language":"en","subjects":["cs.DL"],"url":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2503.21645","pdf_url":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2503.21645","is_open_access":true,"published_at":"2025-03-27T16:08:15Z","score":69},{"id":"doaj_10.64729/an.acervo.v38i3.2607","title":"Centro de memória escolar","authors":[{"name":"Guilherme Santos Gomes"},{"name":"Priscila Ribeiro Gomes"},{"name":"Leticia de Luna Freire"}],"abstract":"Este artigo analisa o impacto do Centro de Memória da Escola Municipal Friedenreich na prática pedagógica da instituição, destacando sua contribuição à educação patrimonial. Content-driven solutions, including anonymization and pseudonymization as well many automated solutions, have delivered unsatisfactory results, with many records being broadly restricted. In this paper, we lay out the theoretical framework for a context-based AI privacy solution for archival records, combining three approaches to “context” (contextual integrity, archival diplomatics, and knowledge graphs). This framework lays the groundwork for a GraphRAG workflow that identifies critical contextual information about privacy in records collections. By centering context and making it machine-legible, this solution operationalizes contextual integrity, allowing archivists and other records professionals to make informed decisions about privacy in a resource-efficient manner.","source":"Semantic Scholar","year":2025,"language":"en","subjects":["Computer Science"],"doi":"10.1109/BigData66926.2025.11401061","url":"https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/c9e6afce25c5a44954f59a806ed441d46bc61869","is_open_access":true,"published_at":"","score":69},{"id":"ss_aa6166c206c3bcb7afd937a3181a69613afb3538","title":"Lessons from the masses: a comparison of three major conservation and rehousing projects for three Oxford College archives","authors":[{"name":"Jane Hyslop"},{"name":"E. This paper compares three large-scale projects undertaken by the OCC to conserve and rehouse College archival collections, detailing the lessons learned from each and how these shaped decision-making throughout. The first, and largest, of the three projects focuses on the conservation and rehousing of the St John’s Estates collection, primarily paper and parchment documents dating from the twelfth to the twentieth century housed in poor quality acidic envelopes. The second presents the Queen’s Deeds project which involved the cleaning, repair, and rehousing of approximately 2500 medieval parchment deeds, many with pendant seals. The final project discussed is the ongoing rehousing of Lincoln Archive’s Estates and Livings collection, comprising a range of material and formats. Each project presented challenges such as managing storage limitations, working to tight budgets, maintaining consistency of approach, item tracking, and surveying large and diverse collections. Effective planning and management has been key to success, ensuring that the approach remains streamlined and economical while adapting to changing circumstances and priorities. The key lessons learned are shared for the advisement of others embarking on similar large-scale rehousing projects.","source":"Semantic Scholar","year":2025,"language":"en","subjects":null,"doi":"10.1080/23257962.2025.2600280","url":"https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/aa6166c206c3bcb7afd937a3181a69613afb3538","is_open_access":true,"published_at":"","score":69},{"id":"ss_d4fd62c5cd01067665bf3827a33395ec5fbb3be7","title":"Removed archives: the case of the royal palace of Mari (ca 1810–1760 BCE)","authors":[{"name":"Philippe Abrahami"}],"abstract":"","source":"Semantic Scholar","year":2025,"language":"en","subjects":null,"doi":"10.1007/s10502-025-09500-1","url":"https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/d4fd62c5cd01067665bf3827a33395ec5fbb3be7","is_open_access":true,"published_at":"","score":69},{"id":"ss_735d34f1787c3879c3a107e57079ba539bc8319e","title":"The diplomatic archives of Russia in the pre-revolutionary period","authors":[{"name":"Oleg Sanin"}],"abstract":"The textbook is a systematic and systematic presentation of the emergence, formation and development of archives of the diplomatic departments of Russia in the pre—revolutionary period (Embassy Order — Board of Foreign Affairs - Ministry of Foreign Affairs). An archival diplomatics perspective is adopted. It focuses, among other things, on authentication by means of assessment of the form of records rather than simply their content. First, we focus on a study examining whether citizen journalists can ascertain if a news video is fake. The results of that study informed an approach to automate the assessment of a news video’s authenticity, building on archival diplomatics’ principles and methods of formal analysis. The study data and a set of authenticity criteria are then modeled into a knowledge graph. We suggest that graph analytics techniques may complement archival diplomatics in helping to assess the authenticity of videos. They can produce relative authenticity scores that may help computational archivists and others appraise the veracity and authenticity, of multi-media records with precision.","source":"Semantic Scholar","year":2024,"language":"en","subjects":null,"doi":"10.1109/DPSH60098.2024.10775182","url":"https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/f1976375ccc0c30fcb3c3e309983441ff38d5191","is_open_access":true,"citations":1,"published_at":"","score":68.03},{"id":"arxiv_2401.10741","title":"Character Recognition in Byzantine Seals with Deep Neural Networks","authors":[{"name":"Théophile Rageau"},{"name":"Laurence Likforman-Sulem"},{"name":"Attilio Fiandrotti"},{"name":"Victoria Eyharabide"},{"name":"Béatrice Caseau"},{"name":"Jean-Claude Cheynet"}],"abstract":"Seals are small coin-shaped artifacts, mostly made of lead, held with strings to seal letters. In the early post-war period, the Japanese government established diplomatic relations with the Taiwanese authorities, and Sino-Japanese relations were in a state of “political and economic separation.” In 1969, the Japanese government insisted on the “two Chinas” line, but due to the easing of SinoAmerican relations, Sato Eisaku’s cabinet began to consider official-level contacts with the Chinese government. In 1971, influenced by the “Nixon Shock” and the restoration of China’s legal seat in the United Nations, Japan adjusted its policy toward China and accelerated the process of normalization of diplomatic relations. Chicherin) and the Central Archives (headed by M.N. Pokrovsky) on the issue of using the archival documents of the imperial diplomatic institutions. Based on the previously unpublished Central Archives materials of the years 1926–1927 stored in the special depository of the Russian Civil Aviation, Chicherin’s general position on the use of the documentary heritage of the Imperial Foreign Ministry is revealed; the paper also describes the essence of the contradictions concerning the procedure for the collecting, systematizing and using the documents. There is a detailed study of Chicherin’s attempts to build business relations with the representatives of the Soviet archival department and of Pokrovsky’s opposition to that. The arguments of both sides in defense of their own position are discussed separately. Particular attention is paid to the “revolutionary” ideological component of Chicherin’s argumentation, to the assumption that the archives are a tool for Soviet Russia to realize its own global historic mission. A conclusion is drawn about the nature of the established cultural practices of the new bureaucracy. The study of the emerging access mechanisms of various government departments to the process of extracting historical facts broadens our understanding of the Soviet experience of the political-ideological “conveyor” and leads the authors to the conclusion that the resource approach to archival, documentary heritage is a typical element of the political culture of the Soviet period, and it has effectively migrated to the modern era.","source":"Semantic Scholar","year":2024,"language":"en","subjects":null,"doi":"10.28995/2658-6541-2024-6-2-32-44","url":"https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/882dbe2fcde70e908972ad617065535cfe63674f","is_open_access":true,"published_at":"","score":68},{"id":"ss_d1b96522d690a0c169a1f7a983831a584d9d0ba1","title":"Heartworm and seal louse: Trends in prevalence, characterisation of impact and transmission pathways in a unique parasite assembly on seals in the North and Baltic Sea","authors":[{"name":"Insa Herzog"},{"name":"P. The endoparasitic heartworm Acanthocheilonema spirocauda parasitizes the right heart and blood vessels of harbour seals. The complete lifecycle of the heartworm is not entirely understood although the seal louse is assumed to serve as vector for its transmission. Knowledge about the impact of both parasite species on host health are scarce. In this study, necropsy data and archived parasites of harbour and grey seals in German waters were analysed to determine long-term seal louse (SLP) and heartworm prevalence (HWP) from 2014 to 2021. Histology, microbiology and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were applied on seal louse infected and uninfected skin to investigate associated lesions and the health impact. During the study period, HWP in harbour seals was 13%, the SLP in harbour seals was 4% and in grey seals 10%. HWP of harbour seals was significantly higher during the winter months compared to the summer. SLP in adults was significantly higher in comparison to juvenile harbour seals. SLP varied significantly between grey seals from the North and Baltic Sea. Filarial nematodes were detected in the haemocoel, pharynx, and intestine of E. horridus highlighting the seal louse as vector for heartworms. On the one hand, archival assets are evolving to encompass digitized documents and increasing quantities of born-digital information in diverse formats. On the other hand, the audience is changing along with how it wishes to access archival material. Moreover, the interoperability requirements of cultural heritage repositories are growing. In this context, the Portuguese Archives started an ambitious program aiming to evolve its data model, migrate existing records, and build a new archival management system appropriate to both archival tasks and public access. The overall goal is to have a fine-grained and flexible description, more machine-actionable than the current one. This work describes ArchOnto, a linked open data model for archives, and rules for its automatic population from existing records. ArchOnto adopts a semantic web approach and encompasses the CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model and additional ontologies, envisioning interoperability with datasets curated by multiple communities of practice. Existing ISAD(G)-conforming descriptions are being migrated to the new model using the direct mappings provided here. We used a sample of 25 records associated with different description levels to validate the completeness and conformity of ArchOnto to existing data. This work is in progress and is original in several respects: (1) it is one of the first approaches to use CIDOC CRM in the context of archives, identifying problems and questions that emerged during the process and pinpointing possible solutions; (2) it addresses the balance in the model between the migration of existing records and the construction of new ones by archive professionals; and (3) it adopts an open world view on linking archival data to global information sources.","source":"arXiv","year":2023,"language":"en","subjects":["cs.DL"],"doi":"10.1145/3605910","url":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2310.11140","pdf_url":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2310.11140","is_open_access":true,"published_at":"2023-10-17T10:43:08Z","score":67},{"id":"doaj_A+literatura+como+arquivo+da+Guerra+do+Contestado","title":"A literatura como arquivo da Guerra do Contestado","authors":[{"name":"Sérgio Roberto Massagli"}],"abstract":"Abordar a produção literária sobre o Contestado pressupõe discutir categorias como testemunho, memória e arquivo, bem como considerar o papel dos autores com relação ao passado e à história.
