The monograph offers a new, distinctive and innovative way of looking at both nineteenth century’s vernacular photography and American religious practices. Its position in the field is a strong and incisive one, although influenced by the theoretical approaches of scholars such as Julie Byrne, Leonard Primiano and Marion Bowman. The chapters follow an order which is both chronological and conceptual, and the precise introduction helps the readers to better grasp the following complex content. This is most definitely an academic work, accessible to scholars from other disciplines, but probably not so immediately straightforward for a non-academic readership.
